If I had a nickel for every Dragonbarrow boss you can cheese by making them fall off a bridge, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that one of those bosses is a dragon with wings.
one time i was fighting this dragon, it flew 50 feet in the air, landed on absolutely nothing, hung there, after a while it started "falling" (in place) and it died 20 seconds later...
For anyone curious about that Greyll cheese, the game has a failsafe where entities that are considered falling for 12 seconds (players included) are killed. That cheese seems to work by getting Greyll stuck in a position where it's technically "in a falling state" because it can't make contact with the ground, but isn't truly falling, leading to it just hanging there T-posing for a hot second before randomly keeling over.

The one annoying part about the spinning chain skill is that you can't get it as an Ash of War, and therefore can't put affinities on flails without changing the skill.
Yeah, I always wondered why they never put it in the game. Unsheathe goes only on katanas but you can find it in the overworld. Maybe it has to do with the fact that all non somber flails already start with it. I don't know...
It’s because they knew the almighty and powerful bleed infused flail would be far too much for any boss to handle, as the chain spins and metal strikes flesh, the bosses bleed through thy ugly skin, Thunder strikes and wars come to a halt, as a single tarnished spin the chain of his flail with utmost conviction, absolute unadulterated power, the sheer force of such a legendary weapon would force the demigods into the eternal slumber dubbed “death” so that, is why spinning chain is not a discoverable ash of war, hope that helps.

I actually really feel like they nailed the "spectacle gimmick boss" design with Rykard. The boss fight is super cool, the Serpent Hunter feels awesome to use, and once you've seen it you can simply decide to never fight him again because he's competely optional. Yes, he's more annoying to fight in "unintended ways" than Yhorm, but that's because the fight is entirely designed around you using the Serpent Hunter, and when you do, it's glorious (and much cooler than Yhorm).

@@AaronCorr this so much, divine dragon is not as terrible since there is atleast a 0% chance of dying but rykard just bullshits u from time to time and both just waste time
I think the souls/ring series really shines in it's replayability. What makes the games so replayable is the diverse ways to play each fight. Restricting that fight to one weapon design is the antithesis of this idea, which I think makes the 1 weapon bosses a poor design gimmick. I think with a slight pivot in design choice (making other weapons more viable) the fight could have been more enjoyable instead of choosing the 1 weapon gimmick as a thematic thing necessary to the game. An enemy can have a weakness, without being strong against literally everything else in the game.
I feel like the main issue is just how easy it would have been to make it much more playable with other weapons. Like, obviously they needed to put more work into the phase 2 hitbox, but also, they could have just doubled or tripled the damage he takes from non-Serpent Hunter weapons and it would have been exactly as good a fight with the Serpent Hunter and also much better with every other weapon.
As someone who's first run of Elden ring involved clinging to my flail for dear life I feel a lot of vindication as you play around with the flail 's spin
Fun fact though you won't see this: you can nearly infinitely frostbite Rykard because every time it procs, the lava takes away the effect (though graphically it might still show). Did that with a cold Giant Crusher and whatever freezing mist is called.
I used the flail throughout the majority of my first playthrough. They're good. Strike damage, bleed proc, decent poise damage, and just kinda rad looking.
I wish games that had input buffer windows gave the player the option to change it. Like a slider from say, 60 frames to 0 (latest input occurs, no queue). Can’t count the amount of times I threw out a backstep, roll, or extra swing because of it. Especially common with charge attacks in my Elden Ring experience.
Honestly, if they let you cancel the queued action, it would be a non-problem. This sort of stuff simply does not happen in Devil May Cry for instance. I like the smoothness it brings, but yeah, especially in ds3 and Elden Ring, it becomes frustrating. A tangenial idea is having a talisman that allows you to animation cancel at any time for additional stamina cost - I would like to see a Soulslike that's a bit faster paced and allows for a bit less rigid play.
@@NoNono-o3h the player shouldn't be responsible for fixing something the game does poorly. You can, I have and a lot of people did, but we slip up eventually.
Used Family Heads as a joke at first cause my friends thought it was such a funny weapon (buncha moaning heads on a stick), but I eventually used it for almost half my NG playthrough cause it ended up being such a good weapon. Happy to see it (and flails in general) getting more love.
I think it hits twice when the first part of the explosion hits are more spread out from the second hits. (far right portion of the trail hits first then the far left explodes and hits second) E: Wild strikes with bleed works similar to spinning chain. And here is the time stamp showing what I’m explaining above and it hits twice. 1:16:03
the bastards star has those white stars in the nebula explode and depending on how many stars are exploding at the targets hitbox thats how many hits you get
I've always thought that flails got a bad rep. There's very few of them and players and creators never took the time to really invest in becoming an expert with them. They, like scythes, are an underwhelming weapon simply due to choices however I've always felt they could be very viable and versatile as a weapon,
You hit upon why I loved the Bastard Stars so much my 1st playthrough. It's Ash range is deceptive and I'd often use it to time an intercept of an approaching enemy and it'd often get 3 hits in from that Ash of War.
So, immediately after seeing how you killed Greyll 4:40 , I attempted it myself. Only two tries. I only reset due to him getting on the cliff and staying there. Second attempt was perfect. 10/10
Well like the other person said, he upgrades most weapons to that point before that boss fight, so he's comparing +12 flail to other +12 weapons. Also the flails are good for the rest of the run (minus rykard).
Used nightrider for a good chunk of my first playthru, eventually replaced with flamberge. They've always been really good, the art is just bad, replaced with wild strikes first run and that shreds. Notably, before the guard counter buffs they had some of the highest guard counter poise damage in the whole game, and probably still do, while also being very very fast on counter. Good combo with greatshield
Rykard is great on a first playthrough with the Serpent Hunter, the spectacle of it. But when challenge running with different builds (especially melee, and not overlevelled) it is an absolute nightmare
1:12:56 Also keep in mind that Yhorm has a way to fight him without the storm ruler. His arms are weak and hitting them will stagger him easily. Rykard has no mechanic like this
make a video on how to setup runs please :) i've started myself doing runs with specific builds, but i always miss some stuff here and there in properly setting it up
My first Elden Ring playthrough I used the flail found in the first Limgrave camp for over half the game, friends didn't believe I actually used it so I beat their asses in PVP and converted them to flail users.
Elden Ring is fantastic in that all weapons can be viable if you know how to play them. I actually managed to beeline to AND beat the elden beast with only rapiers (arguably the worst weapon archetype in the game) with minimal issue on my second run. Hell, I plan to do bareknuckle only on my next run.
Probably the most beautiful Hoarah Loux fight I’ve seen yet, the way you cloaked him with nebula then perfectly aligned for the follow up was simply magic ❤
I saw another weapon challenge run, he didn't seem to struggle as much with rykhard. But he also went heavy armor, liferegen shield, talisman, lifesteal talismans with more. Pretty sure you'd struggle less if you planned for him 🙂
After watching this video I went for a flail build. Avoided previously as people said I they were rubbish. Double wielded normal flail and knight rider flail. Was absolutely awesome. Possibly my most favourite play through. Hugely underrated weapon. Spinning chain, although not always great, in some circumstances can be really effective due to bleed and number of hits. Particularly against large, slow enemies and bosses you can stun.
If you don't lock on and aim slightly to the left with bastard stars, more of the stars will hit the target as they tend to group up at the start of the arc
You can do the Rykard fight close-quarters (especially useful for dealing with his Rancor spell in phase 2) with the stamina regen and hp regen tears in the physick, bestial vitality, flamedrake and turtle talismans, and the incant version of golden vow. You could add the Turtle shield for even more stamina regen, if you can also wear the royal remains set with it, carry serpent hunter, and not fat roll. Kill Greyoll and the Caelid Night's Cavalry for runes, and make sure you have enough points in Faith to use Golden Vow, because you won't be able to get the points from your talismans or physick, kill Margit for the talisman pouch, grab the talismans, let Rya take you to Volcano Manor, pick up serpent hunter, and upgrade it if you have any trouble with him. You also need a seal, which you can pick up while in Volcano Manor if you didn't start with one. I've done this for an early Rykard kill to get the blasphemous blade, which, if you were smart about how you portioned out your runes, you'll have the stats to use right away. You can then upgrade it all the way to +9 just from doing some running around picking up sombers, then +10 after killing Godrick and doing Varre's quest to go to Mohgwyn palace for the last upgrade. You can basically cruise through the game on easy mode after that.
What about a boss build run where you are location locked and for every boss with a bottom screen health bar you beat you have to use the armor and weapon build closest to their fight style or use their specific weapons and armor until you beat the next boss, respec is allowed but only if the weapon or armor set is unusable without respec of attributes and can not exceed what’s needed for said weapon or armor set so plan your bosses accordingly(all bosses must be killed in every area, invasions at your discretion),(upon killing dragons -dragon armor and dragon shield ,dragon based spell/mini dragon weapon or dragon lightning lance ) (dragon sentinel their weapons and armor) (crystal bosses -crystal darts)
This one is sooo validating. I finished the game with Bastard's Stars and I loved it and I just saw people say that I needed to change to Astel's Wing, but mannn I'm glad I didn't
i crashed radagon and elden beast also with dual flails, in my case they were the black knight and the regular flail with a quality build at level 120, flails are the blunt damage type weapon for dex builds and also, if they didn't change it, is a weapon inmune to parries
I'm surprises how the nebula from bastard stars has such a hard time hitting multiple times. In this the wing of astel is absolutely the superior weapon. One thing about flails: I think part of their bad reputation is that they are actually kinda bad in pvp, mostly due to the moveset and lack of range. One thing that not many know though, and it can be quite funny, is that they can't be parried.
Dude after watching a bunch of your content i actually scrolled down at the start of the video to see I WASN'T SUBBED!? Unbelievable, the youtube "please like and sub" actually got me for once.
My second character in Elden Ring was a magicless playthrough. I went DEX and had my main be the Great Epee (busted AF) and, sometimes the Guardian Treespear. BUT, really early on, I thought I'd need a striking weapon for stuff like Crystallians, Imps, skellis.... and so I picked up the Nightrider Flail on the way. DANG, that weapon is so stronk. Only issue I had was smithing stone pressure but that was excellent stuff. I used stormcaller a bit to build some bleed, did work really well against some bosses and, later on, I DID default mostly to Lion's Claw for splatting enemies with big bonks. It doesn't have the range of some other stuff but the damage and bleed are super solid. Even without going into the unique flails, these things are so good. Definitely underrated weapon class

Fun fact though you won't see this: you can nearly infinitely frostbite Rykard because every time it procs, the lava takes away the effect (though graphically it might still show).
Did that with a cold Giant Crusher and whatever freezing mist is called.
I love these weapon type only runs, i hope some day we get all the different types, its awesome seeing multiple weapons and strategies in each video
34:03 when you said "i got my own spin " i just cant bro that was so funny for no reason. 😂
I used the flail throughout the majority of my first playthrough. They're good. Strike damage, bleed proc, decent poise damage, and just kinda rad looking.
The checklist and items properties being displayed is genuinly such a good edit
Honestly you can just develop trigger discipline
@@NoNono-o3h right
@@NoNono-o3h the player shouldn't be responsible for fixing something the game does poorly. You can, I have and a lot of people did, but we slip up eventually.
@@foo3268 its not even done poorly, all souls games expect you to be precise with your rolls, especially ER with delayed attacks
An hour and a half video on flails💀 this’ll be fun
I've been dominating PvP with Bastard Stars for a very long time.
People don't understand the power of spinny spin.
this video is bringing me comfort on a day where I really need it. thank you gino.
Nightrider Flail is one of the best weapons you can get early. Love the thing.
1:01:07 Watch the 2nd spin. His head comes back around so quick he pretty much teleports. Just thought that was odd.
Used Family Heads as a joke at first cause my friends thought it was such a funny weapon (buncha moaning heads on a stick), but I eventually used it for almost half my NG playthrough cause it ended up being such a good weapon. Happy to see it (and flails in general) getting more love.
9:01 Dude! That transition was sweet!
That first nights cavalry ain’t having children anymore after that riposte lol 😂
I’ve tried to watch this video in bed but I have fallen asleep to it at like 20-30 minutes in, I’m on my fourth attempt now
I think it hits twice when the first part of the explosion hits are more spread out from the second hits. (far right portion of the trail hits first then the far left explodes and hits second)
E: Wild strikes with bleed works similar to spinning chain. And here is the time stamp showing what I’m explaining above and it hits twice. 1:16:03
Nights cavalry flail with occult scale goes incredibly well wit harcane.
The first time I beat malenia was with bastard's stars and night cavalry's flail in a jump attack build, I love these guys so much ❤❤❤
the bastards star has those white stars in the nebula explode and depending on how many stars are exploding at the targets hitbox thats how many hits you get
It took me roughly 30 - 50 tries to kill Margit and this guy does it without taking damage.
I’m such a flailure
I learned at the end, that nothing is more powerful than family
I've always thought that flails got a bad rep. There's very few of them and players and creators never took the time to really invest in becoming an expert with them. They, like scythes, are an underwhelming weapon simply due to choices however I've always felt they could be very viable and versatile as a weapon,
Friede... bring my _____
Pats on back to anyone that can fill in the blank.
Cant believe Gino did the "almost beat em first try, then hard stuck for like 2 hours" on Rykard
Gino: gets over upgraded before Margit
Also Gino: what it's actually goood dude?
considering that he does that for every weapon that's a pretty standardised way of comparing them
Well like the other person said, he upgrades most weapons to that point before that boss fight, so he's comparing +12 flail to other +12 weapons. Also the flails are good for the rest of the run (minus rykard).
@@abovewater6918 ah fair fair. I never really caught on that he always upgrades to +12 before Marigt.
Good combo with greatshield
i saw this and instantly thought, "YES ONE HOUR AND TWENTY FOUR MINUTES OF PURE ENTERTAINMENT, THANK GOODNESS
Rykard is great on a first playthrough with the Serpent Hunter, the spectacle of it. But when challenge running with different builds (especially melee, and not overlevelled) it is an absolute nightmare
The transition at 9:03 to 9:06 is beautiful
Putting in my vote for a permanently scarlet rotted run
Flail is my favorite weapon on horseback! Incredible multi-attacks while charging heavies, makes cheesing dragons so easy!
More Convergence mod runs, maybe?
1:12:56
Also keep in mind that Yhorm has a way to fight him without the storm ruler. His arms are weak and hitting them will stagger him easily. Rykard has no mechanic like this
Man, who knew spinning your flail around could probably be considered a cheese method unto itself?
make a video on how to setup runs please :) i've started myself doing runs with specific builds, but i always miss some stuff here and there in properly setting it up
My first Elden Ring playthrough I used the flail found in the first Limgrave camp for over half the game, friends didn't believe I actually used it so I beat their asses in PVP and converted them to flail users.
7:15 - I like the cracks appearing on him as his HP gets lower.
The buffs bar being bigger than the health bar scares me
That Flashback part got me rolling on the floor! 😂
Pls stay like u are forever, u're such a wonderful and considerate human being
I'm still waiting for torch only....
In all seriousness these runs are hype
I checked the poise damage stats, paired jump L1s deal the same poise damage on flails as colossal swords, the poise damage on ashes is also the same.
It doesnt make sense, i feel it does exactly the same as hammers
I'd love to see more of this series and some more unique weapon types. I do hope it doesn't just become a bunch of different bleed builds though
Pretty sure you'd struggle less if you planned for him 🙂
This run was an epic flail
After watching this video I went for a flail build. Avoided previously as people said I they were rubbish. Double wielded normal flail and knight rider flail. Was absolutely awesome. Possibly my most favourite play through. Hugely underrated weapon. Spinning chain, although not always great, in some circumstances can be really effective due to bleed and number of hits. Particularly against large, slow enemies and bosses you can stun.
Just finished the entire video. Insane run.
I love how everything is viable in Elden Ring ❤And a ton of ways to work/buff around weaknesses
flails have insane jump attack poise damage as well
Great intro, great gameplay, great video!
1:09:13 the caption lol
At this point I think I’ve watched every Gino Elden ring video
lmaooo the spin attack destroying bosses is hilarious
My first ever playthrough of a fromsoft game was elden ring, and the flail was the first weapon I used. Unfortunately, I had no idea how they worked
Great video as always. I love watching these kinds of runs!
I just finished watching all of your ER UA-cam videos. You da GoaT
6:03 as a speedcore listener, I enjoyed this
I'm surprises how the nebula from bastard stars has such a hard time hitting multiple times. In this the wing of astel is absolutely the superior weapon.
One thing about flails: I think part of their bad reputation is that they are actually kinda bad in pvp, mostly due to the moveset and lack of range. One thing that not many know though, and it can be quite funny, is that they can't be parried.
Any enemy can only hit by one star.
Your editing skills have improved a lot! Last time i watched one of your videos it was a few cuts and that it congrats man
I might have to give flails a go!
Like most weapon types flails are OP if you use status effects
