Tiếng Gọi Công Dân (or 㗂噲公民 in traditional Hán Nôm--yes I am a Chinese character enthusiast) is the more famous of the two official anthems of the Republic of Vietnam (aka South Vietnam), granted the two songs are only slightly different in lyrics. Originally written as a simple patriotic song with the name "March of the Youth" (Thanh Niên Hành Khúc) in 1939 by famous musician Lưu Hữu Phước (who later, ironically, became a communist), it was adopted as the national anthem by the Provisional Central Government of Vietnam (predecessor of the State of Vietnam and later the Republic of Vietnam) in 1948. In 1956, after the formation of the Republic, President Ngô Đình Diệm went ahead and rewrote the anthem's lyrics, and renamed it "Call to the Citizens"--this was sung until 1975 when Saigon fell, and the ROV ceased to exist.
A side note: the author Lưu Hữu Phước was so outraged that his song was used by the anti-communist South that he eventually went to join the Viet Cong and wrote their anthem "Liberate the South" (Giải phóng miền Nam). This was used as the national anthem of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam from 1975 to 76, before it was officially replaced by Socialist Republic of Vietnam and its Tiến Quân Ca.
The story of this song, "Call to the Citizens", however, did not end with South Vietnam. Just like the South's Heritage and Freedom Flag, the legacy of "Call to the Citizens" still remains. Go to any Vietnamese expatriate community in the U.S. today, chances are, you will hear this song.

0:55 the translation is wrong, nước Nam here doesn't mean only the South (of Vietnam) 南方 but the whole Vietnam, we take China as "the nation in the Center or the North" and call ourself the nation in the South

most people in the south vietnamese government were communists before 1945. even the former president of south vietnam was a communist!
the song "Tieng goi thanh nien" was written at that time, where all vietnamese were fighting against the french colony. The song is about independence of vietnam and a dream of a better future for the country and that's why it was chosen to be the national anthem of south vietnam.
the southern government were much tolerant than the northern. they didnt care about the thing that that song was written by a communist writer. they just knew that the song came from a period, where we all had the same goal.
so don't say, that we stole a song from a communist. the writer wrote this song for his people and his country, not for the communist party!
If anything, South Vietnam made the song better in my opinion.

The lyrics of "Call to the Citizens" have been rivised many times by Vietnam Governments (not Viet Minh or Viet cong) and the last revision in 1956. Phuoc (and may be others) composed the 1st version of "Tieng goi thanh nien". "Call to the Citizens" may be influenced by "Tieng goi thanh nien" but it has modified and revised many times. Phuoc did not write the lyrics. At the beginning Viet Minh was not Viet cong. After Ho took over Viet Minh then many people left Viet Minh/Viet cong and went back to Quoc Gia. "Do not believe whatever communists say", including Phuoc. Google is free.

What did the Republic of Vietnam Party do to expel the invaders of Vietnam ? (for example, the American invaders)
I don't know the Vietnamese language but I really love how the music sounds in "Call to the Citizens". I can't comment about the lyrics but the music used for the current national anthem of Vietnam (or formerly North Vietnam) sounds so dull compared to this one.

Not the south, the vietnam actually. "Nước Nam" is one of the ways ancient vietnamese (or Daiviet, Daicoviet) call the country (nước = country, nam = south) and "nước bắc" (north country) or "giặc bắc" (north invaders) is china (our biggest enemy bacm then)

There is no need to be ashamed of any similiarities between Vietnamese and Han cultures.

We now use Latin to express our voice. I am learning Chinese and it is very difficult, especially writing. Our history is tied to fighting Chinese invasion, so we are influenced by Chinese culture. But we still keep own identity.
The chinese new year is on the first day of the lunar calendar which is/was popular in various farming based countries, not only in china-influenced countries. And the linguistic origin of the word tet and the whole language has been a debate, some say like you, some say it has indian roots, heck there's a theory i've read that the southern chinese originated from ancient vn. When you mention that "Communists have been killing Catholics", there were no specific marginilized groups targeted for religious reasons for liberating South Vietnam. Those Catholics were also oppresing Buddhists during the Buddhist Crisis 1969 because Ngo Dinh Diem policies favored Catholicism (since he had a strong Catholic identity in a predominatly Buddhist community). I also currently live in Houston, Texas too. It's sad to see that the Vietnamese American community is only taught from the white washed point of view without mentioning any war crimes from BOTH sides. Never ask a conservative Vietnamese American what happened during March 16, 1968 (My Lai), Agent Orange, Buddhist Crisis 1963. Not realizing thgat South Vietnam was basically a Puppet of government of the US, even though we should have been united as one at first. Sorry, but Vietnam (under other nations in which communism was forced to them) did mostly support the stablishment of a socialist state. At least in the north. I am not communist. Phuoc and others composed the 1st version of "Tieng goi thanh nien" for Viet Minh. "Call to the Citizens" may be influenced by "Tieng goi thanh nien" but it has modified, revised and refined many times. Phuoc did not write the lyrics. At the beginning Viet Minh was not Viet cong (Mao's puppet). After Ho took over Viet Minh then many people left Viet Minh and went back to Quoc Gia. "Do not believe whatever communists say", including Luu Huu Phuoc. Google is free.

Radio Vietnam revised "all of the' the lyrics of Thanh nien hanh khuc and they gave it a name well you know to make it sound difference from the pesky communist in the North "Tieng goi cong dan" (Call to the citizen). If Phuoc was dead in the first Indochina war then they can somehow used it. But Phuoc was still fucking alive and he even lived longer than the ROV, he protested against the illegal usage of his own song (his property). the song "Tieng goi thanh nien" was written at that time, where all vietnamese were fighting against the french colony. The song is about independence of vietnam and a dream of a better future for the country and that's why it was chosen to be the national anthem of south vietnam.
the southern government were much tolerant than the northern. they didnt care about the thing that that song was written by a communist writer. they just knew that the song came from a period, where we all had the same goal.

First, they served in the French army as a pet regime (the State of Vietnam) and helped the French reinvaded Indochina (Vietnam, Lao, Cambodia), they sold the independence of their nation, their own people to the French for their own benefits. They served the French loyalty until the French were defeated by the Vietnamese Communists and Vietnamese people in Dien Bien Phu 1954, American adopted them and made them his pet regime (the Republic of Vietnam- - South Vietnam), they continued to serve American master as American's dogs for the next 21 years until they both got kicked out of Vietnam in 30/4/1975.
