Wonderful content as always. I do have a question for you regarding plug-ins instruments like Komplete 13 and Omnisphere. Would you recommend a larger memory like 2 Terabytes to host them in this computer or can you run these type of plug-ins from an external?

    • @Jason75913
      @Jason75913 2 роки тому +2

if you go external, go external SSD for best results, this will most impact Kontakt and Maschine
2 teras is likely a must if you will be getting a bunch of sample libraries, otherwise, it will be overkill. How many gigs do you need for Omnisphere? 1 TB is far more than enough for Komplete 13 alone. Plus the operating system, and then you'll get plenty of space for saved projects that should last a while, depending on how much you produce and what you produce. If you will be doing a lot of audio recording as well, consider less internal memory to save money and get more external memory, it's up to you if that works. You'll eventually hit the internal limit (don't let the internal memory go past 80% full) and will have to use external memory.

Im still waiting for an m1 pro mac mini. I want one for both music and design so faster will be better and i will need GPU power as well as CPU power. Im currently using a tricked out 2009 5,1 mac pro tower. Its starting to groan under cpu heavy plugins but most of the time it works well for my needs and everything is fairly stable at the moment.

Using M1 Max 32GB 4TB MacBook here, ( medium sized projects: around 150 tracks of vsti plugins and kontakt instances )
Cubase 10.5 runs very smoothly, Logic on the other hand is a little buggy.
Also all the VST plugins work in cubase but some AU plugins don’t work in Logic. I’m running everything thru Rosetta.
Only thing I miss is Virtual Guitarist 2 which is a 32bit plugin and Slate VSX that doesn’t work on Monterey at all. Everything else runs smoothly.

My 2021 Apple MacBook Pro (16-inch, Apple M1 Pro chip with 10‑core CPU and 16‑core GPU, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD) arrives Monday. is it wrong that I am most excited about the SD Slot? (and the other long missed connectivity, dual monitors here I come!) I use a Zoom HD recorder all the time (that uses an SD) for sound design, and also I DJ on a Denon GO that Records to an SD, this is great, no more swapping files onto USB on my PC, or using the cloud storage, it works and it's nice, I occasionally use it to DJ from my Dropbox, or Tidal, but I prefer physical medium. I currently have a 2019 MBP, out of space already, after a year and a half in School for AP, (I have had multiple issues with Logic X and Pro Tools, on Monterey as well) So I have had to ingrate yet another USB device, a 4TB HD, in my massive dongle chain of USB 3.0, which is now going into my office for Sound Editing, basic Video Editing, Graphic Design, Uploading files and projects, etc... It's perhaps a little overkill, I keep thinking, but why not? if given the opportunity to have more sustainable computer for the future of Audio Production. I am going for it.
    I can't wait.

For some reason I am thinking a 4 TB drive is the only way to go because just using Ableton, Komplete, Arturia collection, Omnisphere etc we are getting close to 1.6 TB. My question is do you think it's ok to use a single 4 TB drive to store everything ( Ableton, VSTs, samples, music, videos etc) and using an external drive or the cloud to backup projects. I buy a new laptop every 7 to 10 years which is only reason I am thinking 4 TB makes the most sense. It's such a difficult & expensive decision deciding what upgrades are really needed. Max chip with 64 GB and 2 TB drive or the pro with 32GB and 4 TB drive? .

Hi! I'm looking forward to buy a Macbook Pro M1 (16") but I am torn between 16 and 32 GB. Some people mentionned 16 GB is plenty enough whereas others suggest to invest into 32 GB for future proofing and also to reduce the necessity of buffering onto the SSD "all the time". What is your take on this please? 🤔 Should one invest into the additional RAM to be on the safe side instead of buying twice or is it worthless for most of us? (I would use the machine for music production with plenty of plugins, some photo editing and maybe a little bit of video editing here and there). Thanks

Do you use Konakt heavily? If so, extra ram is nice, but otherwise, wouldn’t be as important past 16gb to be honest. If what you want is future-proofing, depending on how long you’d plan on keeping that for, then maybe, but otherwise it’s “usually” excessive.

This is the best video I've seen yet, and I've seen several good videos, on whether I really need to get an M1 Pro/Max machine when the ones with the original M1 will do. And the answer is: my next laptop looks to be the M1 MacBook Air. I bought an M1 Mac mini and I've been extremely satisfied with it. I dare say that you can do pro-level work on it. That said, I am aware that if people do need the extra power, they are going to know it. I do video, music production, and DJing, and I would have never done it back then on a MacBook Air, ever. But I'm all about portability and power, and the M1 MacBook Air IMO will go well with my M1 iPad Pro and be, really, give me what I wish for years to come, without the pricey overhead. Just my thoughts; as usual, really informative video Nick. Thank you!

If it were possible to duel boot between being a Mac with the new M1 processor, and rebooting and working as a PC clone with no restrictions and the ability to run all PC VST synths, I'd be more interested in this. I already have a significant PC collection of VST synths. As a PC clone, these look pretty good for the money. Less interested in the Mac world, but if it could do both equally without Bootcamp restrictions, it could be considered.
Is there much performance improvements for VST synths used for live performance without needing to double as a multi-track recorder or run tracks? Just running as a sound module, or would a decent PC using Intel be just as good at present?

I have yet to see anyone demonstrate a difference with M1 RAM quantity for audio software.
The things that seem to pay off for music production with the M1 family is the multiple CPU cores and high-efficiency unified RAM.
If there was ever something that is parallelizable it's modular synthesis and audio processing. Even apps like VCV Rack that are
multi-threaded but are running Rosetta (i.e. haven't been ported to ARM) seem to benefit from the 8 CPU cores. Audio production
configurations running multiple plugins often use multiple threads and thus multiple cores.
I would like to see someone analyze the difference between the M1, M1 Pro (18,2) and M1 Pro (18,1). (The latter is the $2500 model.)
    - The M1 has 4 performance CPU cores and 4 efficiency cores.
    - The M1 Pro (18,2) has 6 performance cores and 2 efficiency cores.
    - The M1 Pro (18,1) has 8 performance cores and 2 efficiency cores.
    - The M1 Max chips also have 8 performance cores and 2 efficiency cores.
(The M1, M1 Pro and M1 Max also have different RAM speeds.)
I don't know if much music software takes advantage of multiple GPUs for audio processing. I suspect to do that a piece of software can't
be cross-platform. But I am speculating. That limits you to Apple-brand music software and a few odd and ends to tap into the quantity of
GPUs in the M1 Pro and Max chips. For example, I'm guessing the new Dolby Atmos processing in Logic Pro uses the GPUs.

My 64gig MacBook Pro still hasn’t shipped annoyingly, but I have looked into how an Apple Silicon mac handles offloading Ram tasks to storage and yes you are correct for many tasks, but the problem with this is that the read/writes to the internal (non replaceable) SSD increase dramatically which means they will possibly fail much quicker than in a Mac with enough Physical Ram for the task. Also the access speed of the drives is still not as quick as the ram chips in current Macs so when streaming multiple streams of audio at minimum possible latency (as you do when playing back disk streaming Kontakt presets) drive caching in lieu of Ram capacity still is not a good solution.. I do foresee a multitude of eBay auctions for 8gig Ram M1 macs with dead ssd’s hitting the market in a few short years.. Any help?

the base model wont cut it if you want more plugins power, it only has 6 performance cores, the M1 PRO with 10 cores, has 8 high performance cores, thats double of the classic M1 and the maximum vailable atm, even the max 64GB has the same 10 cores. so for performance hungry users the base model with the upgraded 10 core M1 PRO is the best choice.
great review nick! but, the efficiency, while certainly nice for the environment, the Killer feature that this brings to the table for us Audio People is that we wont hear any fans at all even on big projects. we need the performance in real time, we cannot just wait longer for the rendereing like a video editor does.
but a render process goas full load the entire time, while our process always varies, we just need to handle the peaks.

Hmm testing Mac M1 with Mac only software (logic) is ... a simple test. Everybody knows it's optimized. What if I use Ableton Live, Bitwig, some Native Instruments "big" plugins ? What if i load hundreds of VST plugins ?
We all know it's not only about performance, but about stability too. The history shows (ie. release of Catalina, Big Sur) that Mac environment, especially OS, may be a kind of a boomer. A lot of things may not work out of the box - when Big Sur was released, Ableton and NAtive Instruments were NOT recommending updating to latest OS. Is Monterrey supported by all the big DAWs ?
I mean, honestly, choosing Logic to ... "test Mac M1" is not the best. It's similar to tons of videos that show that M1 works nicely with Final Cut Pro. Yea, I would be surprised when Mac M1 + Big Sur / Monterrey wouldn't even work with native Apple software. But what about other software ? Majority of musicians use plenty of different combination of software. How does this work ? I would love to see such video ! :)
I mean - I know that Apple M1 is very nice laptop, if you use Apple only software (there are hundreds videos like this on youTube) BUT what if you prefer other software ??? What if you prefer ie. some older plugins ? That's the real test.

I have this anxiety feeling.. that no computer will be fast enough for my audio production needs... The M1 Pro is supposed to be up to 70% more CPU performance.. and in the atmos video.. the M1 was being stress by Logic + the Dolby Atmos app.
There's this way where, with a little time, as soon is you get more performance you adjust you're work practices to those performance gains.. but before you do that.. you feel like you have more then enough power.
There's yet to be any content, on the new Mac Pros, that has really been able to give me a sense of what performance might look like relative to the way I tend to want to work.. which might be something like VI's + my signal processing chain inclinations.

Am not in audio production, but you are absolutely correct. As someone who’s been using the M1 Pro for a couple weeks, my best advice is to fully understand how the software you use daily is performing on these new chips. What I’ve been finding is some of the applications I use (that are Intel based and running through Rosetta 2) are performing like trash. Basically unusable…. So, I have to basically use my old computer within my workflow to accomplish my tasks. Just because an application my be running through Rosetta 2, don’t assume that it performs well, or to the level you typically use it at…. For software that was built first for Intel, I have a feeling many of the companies are scrambling at this point to get Apple developers to work on their software….

So the Macbook Pro is not pro equipment, not a shocker, it's a laptop which is for travel. Disadvantages:
    - ARM breaks compatibility with dwindling DAWs. Business as usual, hence "only show in town" DAW and video editor quick tests (everyone recognizes this by now.)
    - yet another different charger port (again as usual)
    - dongle for extra storage, and proprietary interface (again as usual)
    - poor connectivity (again as usual)
    - HDMI 2.0 from 2013 in 2021, really? Well at least you can have all of 2 monitors. Hasn't been a problem for anyone else since 2006.
    - pros don't care about laptop speakers. At all. Useless feature and don't know why this is even mentioned.
    - no ASIO audio I/O built in, in 2021. Costs $20, but Apple wants to max out profit.
    - so "Guitar and Mic" bare bones huge dongle audio interface for $170 required. Worth $0 to a(n aspiring) pro, throw it in the trash.
If you're a pro you have a studio, and you put a desktop in it with a digital mixer and save $900. Easy and done! Now you can enjoy it and add to it for a decade without putting yourself at risk of the next 'power move' by a corporation deleting your work. Double win! :)
Apple occasionally makes a desktop computer. But Apple fans don't buy them because they're even more overpriced and limited. The focus is clear: only incompatible iDevices to replace your 2yo iProduct which is for some reason not cutting it, and if it does, they'll break compatibility at next Monday meeting. So for the foreseeable future, you will be stuck with laptop / laptop-on-a-stand / cheapo cable box-alike, all in the same Alu blob 'designer' package. Yay? *Shake of head.*

Lots of people complain about it, but once you actually use the device, it becomes a non issue. Apple is the most profitable company in the world. That means (by definition) that they extract excess money from you, the purchaser of their products, to give to their investors. This is plain to see when you compare the prices to other offerings. Apple rips you off. This transglobal corporation exploits labour in all the countries they operate, far more than other tech companies. They don't even pay the billions of taxes they owe (in places like Ireland), with the effect that local communities are sucked dry of labour and resources with nothing returned.
Apple are the most exploitative company on the planet. A planet that is dying. To consider them as being "greener" is short-sighted in the extreme.
Anyone who cares won't buy a computer you cannot upgrade, cannot service, restricts you from using legacy apps, cannot connect to most things (no ethernet, limited ports etc.) and which will become landfill before its time.
No doubt such a computer will perform excellently for audio, but then again so will any computer from the past decade or so, providing it was not crippled (as previous MacBooks were... thermal throttling, etc. ).
Nick says he's not a fanboy but doesn't point out that other computers have drives just as fast, screens just as good, more ports, more options, and cheaper prices. The one thing the M1 chip does is provide more processing power for the amount of electrical power. That's a fact and a compelling advantage.
But put against all the other factors I've mentioned and it doesn't mean a thing.
A fair review would acknowledge that 9 out of 10 areas in which Apple claims to be innovating are false. As always.

    • @micindir4213

All good points. It is true, that you cannot upgrade their machines and and you pay premium. BUT, we're talking music here, and if you ever had chance to compare asio to coreaudio you'll know who's going to win. If it's your hobby - sure, you can work on Framework laptop no problem: - but if you need to deliver 3 mixes by this evening, you'll be glad you can play back track from youtube, and play your track from daw WITHOUT DISABLING DRIVER (seriously!? wtf?! Are we on Atari ST or something with win10? MS audio and video priority are pure trash) you will see that the difference being overworking every day just to get through driver problems, audio interfaces not connecting and similar problems. Again, you should appreciate revolution, when you see one. This is a revolution in computing, that was unseen for about 10+ years now.
And also I've realized I need 1 hour less soundcheck time with mac! Can you imagine? I no longer need to scan my live set with 300+ tracks and see if I have any greyed out midi in ports (because windows enumerates every usb device in every usb port as separate registry entry). I've had hackintoshed t440p for awhile - awsome machine, that is pre-Framework in concept - socketed CPU, RAM, 3 storage options, but it failed on me on the soundcheck. And that is something you should be able to tolarate if you want a machine with many exchangable parts. Also after restoring its function, I could not boot it from my m.2 drive straight into hackos. That means I've lost compatibility with older project and have to spend extra time extracting my projects and info. The thing is, while I had win10, I had some dropouts popping up randomly. It had top of 4th gen i7 and new audio interface. Then I hacked it and all clicks and pops are gone. Why? No differenece in hardware WHAT-SO-EVER. NONE. Windows for audio is thrash. If you're okay spending 10-30 minutes every day fixing stuff and reading up on how to solve issues that shouldn't exist in the first place its ok (like playing back youtube video and playing back your daw at the same time. If you use ASIO, you should use specific samplerate and itsdifferentforeverymanufactureritmightworkwithrmebutnotscarlettokwithsteinbergthisyearkompleteaudiodoesntwork-yada-yada-yada. It's honestly not what what you should spend your life on). I'm not OK with this.
Considering all this, right now mac is way ahead in terms of ease of use and stuff. Sometimes mainstage have saved me some jam session - just literally plug any midi keyboard and you have perfectly adequate piano or rhodes in your hands. With windows not so much.
The point is, until we have software alternative THAT IS ANY GOOD, we're stuck with bad choice and even worse.

In fact, there is no laptop that can hit the measured 240GB/s memory bandwidth (in CPU-only tests) of the M1 Max, much less the 200GB/s of the Pro, because nothing that Intel or AMD has comes to even half that, including Alder Lake and the 5900X. Only with high core count and massive power draw can anything come close to the performance of these machines in a laptop form factor, but at the cost of crappy battery life, and lots of noise, heat, and weight, slower RAM, and slower SSD.
