    I did this on one of my baitcasters. I left 1/4" of spacing after the mono backing. I used the entire 150 yd spool of 10lb braid and it ended up perfect on the spool. Thanks for the tip.

    This one of the few spinning reel spooling videos that shows how to do it right. Most tell you to take it off the filler spool from the end. Amazing how many professionals (term used loosely) have it wrong. Tight lines!

    Bravo Luke 👏👏👏 I joined Salt Strong in 2018 and I have so many of your products from scissors, lures, terminal tackle and TFO rods, and I first found you on a tutorial for knots, I’ve spooled spinning reels for years and I remember the troubles of line twists way back before I started using braid, but this is the best yet. I have a small cardboard box that I put my spool in so my line comes off the bottom and I think I got that tip from you guys😎 Love your channel, Salt Strong Insiders Club and all of your success is well deserved. Thanks for the video. You got it right with spooling the reel. I am amazed how many videos out there do it coming off the top. As an engineer, to test out the correct spooling method I spooled a test section of line say 5 yards and then opened the bail to let out the the line to see if there would be line twist. The line came out exactly straight just as it was pulled off the reel. The line twists as it goes on the reel and untwists as it leaves the reel.

      I completely agree. It seemed going from the top or bottom I would often get line twist on my mono. Braid not so much because it doesn't have any memory which is the real problem imo. (If only wives had that feature)
      I bought a cheap spring tension spool holder and it's really made spooling a breeze.

    Hey Luke, great information on the backing. I use to use the pencil has well, but if you notice the holes on side of the J-braid box that's what I use now. Just guide the line through the hole put the spool back in box and close it, it will spin in the box. give it a try it will save the toes holding the pencil.

    I use a small strip of electrical tape directly on the spool evenly once around. Then apply the braid then your leader line. You can skip the mono.

    I prefer spooling my braid first then the backing. Then I attach a empty spool to a cordless drill, remove all the line, transfer the line to another empty spool so that the backing is at the top of the spool and respool all my line back onto the reel. It's a bit more time consuming but I always get my line spooled perfectly to the exact point on the spool.

    Hey Luke, really appreciated the informative video on spooling the reel. I have a question and hope you can help with. I had my reel spooled and I do not know the lb. test that was used for backup. I do know it took 300 yards of power pro 20 lb. test to complete. It cost me $40 to have it done. So my question is, what's the lb. test used for backup, and how would I determine the spacing for when to start the braid? I have an old Penn 712 for salt water that's been a great reel. Any advice would help. Also, I want to express how much I love the slam shady an Alabama Leprechaun soft plastics I purchased from salt strong. Thanks, Steve

    This method works well for similar line weight and reel size, but have you ever considered reeling the braid on first and finishing with the mono backing, then use the extra spooll that comes with most reels nowadays to take that line off the first spool in reverse order so the mono backing ends up at the beginning and the braid on top on the spare spool. This way you use all the braid that you want such as on a 300 yard spool and you end up with all of it on the reel. If you count the number of turns as you're putting on the mono backing you then know the exact amount of mono to put on your second spool and follow up with hundreds of yards of braid, or whatever the capacity for your particular real is. I've never done it this way, and it might cause twist taking it off and reeling on to the second spool, but 300 yards is imperative when fishing say a 6000 series at inlets for big tarpon. Thoughts?

    • @redsky8509

      I am having trouble finding extra spools for my reels. I used to keep two or three spools for each real.

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  2 роки тому +2

      Yes, the loading it all backwards is how I got the 1/4 inch gap stat for this lesson. I don't think that counting the revolutions will work though because the inches per turn is different based on how much line is on the spool (starts low and gets bigger as the spool is filled).

      Thanks for making time to post the nice comment! I go with Ande mono since it's inexpensive and has proven to hold up well. As for size, there isn't a hard rule on it... I typically just match to the strength rating of the mainline. But you can go heavier if you'd like as long as you use a thin knot like the FG to make the connection so you don't end up with a bug bulge in the spool from the knot.

    Do you think we can use fluoro as backing, because I can get the Yo Zuri hybrid line(600yrds), for almost nothing.

      The Fuego 3000 spool is slightly wider than the 2500, so I'd go with 3/16th inch for it.

    New to salt water fishing and spin reels, out of curiosity, why the mono backing? Couldn't you just spool your entire main line out of braid?

    • @ericw9655
      @ericw9655 3 місяці тому +1

      You definitely can. It’s a little harder to get the braid started without slipping on the spool, but a little bit of double sided or electrical tape first will let it grip. I think Salt Strong also promotes this way as a way to save braid. I usually just go all braid and not bother saving the extra $5-10. That braid lasts forever.

    Great tutorial, Luke. The only problem I had was over spooling my reel. I ordered the Ultimate Inshore Spinning Combo. You guys sent me a 300 yard line of braid instead of 150 yards. While I was filling my reel with braid, I kept watching the spool of braid to see when it was getting close to running out and ended up putting on WAY too much on my reel! I looked down at my reel and it was to the lip. I just wrapped in back on the the unused braid spool. Should have enough for a complete refill!

    I know this comment isn't related to the video per say, but the members concept you offer would be amazing if I could purchase it for a smaller period of time. I have a trip to Virginia in October and would love to get on some red and the info from the members section would be amazing info to have but since I live in California and don't fish saltwater ever, I can't justify purchasing this for a year.

    I'm pretty sure I saw a video of yours where you use a narrow box to hold the line with a pencil pushed through, and the line was coming off the top. So, I'm really confused. Anyway, I tried the box method, and still got a lot of twist. Regardless, on the whole twist issue, doesn't twist naturally disappear after a few long casts? Not sure I get the issue. Thanks!

      @@Saltstrong I do understand the reasons for it. I just don't think 150 yards is enough to fight any decent fish.

    • @c.shoresfishing
      @c.shoresfishing 2 роки тому

      I think my complaint had more to do with reel design than anything. I surf fish and can easily cast 150 yards. That be all my line out the door. No small reel holds enough, so I tend to half the line weight. to compensate. If I switch to conventional, there is no rod.

    1. I've never been spooled.
    2. It's been proven that backing is no longer necessary if reel is properly lined from the start. You only really use the first 200 yards. The rest of it tightens as a sleeve.
    3.. If it's a fight I can't win. I'll snap the line to minimize line pollution.

  • @kingoftweaks
    @kingoftweaks 8 місяців тому

    You did it the wrong way. It worked for you because the backing line will never come off the reel and the braid line is not sensitive to twist. The right way is to put the spool on the ground and the line comes off counter clock wise. Another video from Salt Strong explained it well. Well he was wrong saying "put the spool with label facing up", because even the same brand may make a spool in either direction. For example, you must put a Pline CXX spool with label facing down. So, "leaving counter clock wise" is always correct, because all reels I've seen are clock wise while reeling in. Or put it this way, when you look at the spool on the ground, it was wound in clock wise.
    Another detail: many spools have a notch. Tape up the notch with tape.
