What are your opinions on Beach Bum Sunscreen. According to them is doesn't harm the environment, but i'd like someone's opinion who actually takes sunscreen/ block serious.
Got into fishing about a decade ago here in Ft. Lauderdale when my friend and his pop started doing charters. The one thing that stuck with me was when they said the lure market is more catered to catching fishermen than fish.

Dude I had no idea about the sunscreen vs sun block, I thought they were the same! I did know about the coral reef stuff but I didnt know about not chemical based sun block. Thank you for that segment, I will 100% be changing that and start buying sun block from now on!
I’ve been looking for an experience based answer to the leader question. Thanks guys. I just bought a giant spool of 20’ and 40’ mono that I’ve put onto old, empty leader spools in shorter lengths. Glad to hear I’m doing the right thing. Love being able to retie without worrying about wasting a bunch of money.
You guys are quite a team. Great content and great delivery. From the time I was twelve as a deckhand on Commercial boats fishing for mackerel squid Bonita as I got older and bigger I went to work on albacore boats fishing Oregon. I'm now-retired at 73 I would love to learn how to fish the Oregon surf along with bottom fish Jetties rocks. Have zero experience with and reel but I'm going for it for it. By the way my most exciting fishery was working bait boats in Mexico for bluefin. What an absolute blast. I was the luckiest kid on the Block
Sounds like you had an exciting time out there! Lots of great memories. Enjoy learning the Oregon coast...always fun to try something new and different!
Knots - I agree, and I've spent years figuring out the "easy way" that's also really good. I generally use 4 knots. Uni, Kreh loop, FG, and dropper loop. I have little to no use for any other knots in a fishing line.
One thing that I never buy anymore is any lead weights; I go for alternatives like tungsten or bismuth. If it’s a known toxic material, then I don’t think it should be used for fishing because jig heads and weights get hung up so much that the ecological impact is pretty huge. They’re known to kill birds, and who knows what they do to fish that a lead jig head is left in. TLDR, I try to use as little lead as possible for that reason, and I’d encourage others to try that too
For sun protection wear long sleeve shirts, pants, hat, sunglasses and a neck gaiter.it’s expensive than a bottle of sun screen but in the long run it’s totally worth it.it’s chemical free and it’s reusable just by washing after a week of use, keeps you cool and free of chemicals
Chemicals are in everything. Unless they’re PFAS, you’re probably fine to wear the clothing unless you have some kind of allergic reaction to the polyester fibers. But that’s a waterproofing material…shirts made for fishing tend to not be waterproof so they’ll dry out quicker.
All these haters. No way wearing a piece of clothing has a comparable affect to rubbing something into your skin. I’ll take full body coverage with fabric over covering my body with multiple liquids that are toxic to not only me but the reefs we love and the wildlife we want to preserve.
Right there with you on the Gulp. I still have them on my boat and they work, but they are a "10-cast" bait at this point. If you get more than 10 casts out of one of them in current, you're lucky. The newer ones just don't hold up at all.
Thanks for your perspective on modern fishing and I'm staying old school when it's effective. I love my old Abu Garcia Ambassador reels over spin casters and don't see many people using conventional reels on the beach or pier anymore. Got talked into using 80 lb braid for big fish in heavy current before figuring out if I hang up I can't pull the line hard enough to break it from shore or especially from a kayak. Also learned the heaviest reels I have can only put 20 lbs worth of drag on the line. Now I'm considering 30 lb mono on my heavy rods and a maximum of 20 lb leaders. I appreciate suggesting lighter spin casters for inshore which I'll try in the 4000 range. Hard for me to go with smaller reels just in case I hang a 15 lb Jack Crevalle wade fishing which happens occasionally. As for cast nets I love live mullet when I can get them. Again, for wading I put a 4 foot cast net in a shotgun shell pouch on my belt I've had since the 1980s. I dragged my bait bucket on a 12' fish stringer because occasionally sharks check my catch out. I definitely use a variety of plugs, but the fun of relaxing while the bait does the work is great. Besides I may net some bigger mullet for smoking. Kale hooks with their peculiar bend were common for flounder and not sure if circle hooks out perform them inshore. One note on sunblock, I've gotten sunburned and when I got back to my truck used a good sunblock that stopped the burn. Doesn't make sense to me that it works later, just better than using Solarcaine after the red sets in.
Aloe from a plant is best for sunburn and burns in general. I have a big plant that puts out babies I give people so they have their own too. On the 5th I gave one to a friend who's son was sunburned. The kid went from crying to playing, outside.
I still like using swivels when joining wire leader to braid. It’s easy to join that wire with a haywire knot to a swivel, but it’s much trickier to join wire straight to braid.
My best fishing tool is this dude I know. I have never once been out with this dude, and not caught fish. He's very insistant, and always does the exact same thing for snook - and it works incredibly well for here. He runs rat-l-trap silver with blue back, 3 1/2" 3/4 oz. and just slow chug trolls them behind the boat. Ideally 3 of them, short medium long so they follow each other around curves with lines crossing over each other. He does this on his beat up leaky ass aluminum bass (16 foot V nose jon boat) boat with a raggly little 2 stroke 40hp Johnson outboard. This dude is incredibly hard on gear - he broke 2 of my poles in one trip so I bring gear I don't care about on his boat. Last weekend, we trolled 2 using his broken 8 foot rods with beat up Penn Fierce reels spooled with I think 15 or 20lb mono to a heavy swivel, to about 1 foot of 40 or 60lb leader. Caught 4 snook, stopped at a bridge on the way back in and pitched pilchards at snapper, caught a few of those. I'm 100% guilty of spending a lot of money on gear, but Trey is proof that it's unnecessary. But I think it's also Trey because we took my yaks out with my gear, not using his rat-l-traps, and still caught a few snook. I've skunked that spot several times doing the same things. But its not the method I don't think. We ran offshore (yes on his ancient leaky jon boat) about 5 miles to a reef. No fish finder or GPS to even find it, and pulled out some yellowtail. The dude is my lucky friggin charm, even if he does piss me off every time :D
I totally agree with you guys on most of the things that are manufactured to catch fishermen instead of catching fish. I too started as a Bass fisherman. I moved to TEXAS over 30 years ago and found that our water clarity here let us get away with a lot of things that are different in the Great State of Florida. I’m looking forward to moving to Florida after I retire here Soon. I’ve been visiting and fishing in Florida many times over the years. Well done. Please do more of these. Hate wasting money so always bought on your recommendations and boys it works. Shame you don't cover freshwater although much of what you say does apply.
I fish inshore for Perch. Stripers and Chain pickeral. I mostly use a no 3 mepps inline spinner. 10 pound invisx flouro. A snap swivel is a must. By the end of the day line twist makes my 3000 reels feel like there rusty and dirty. I guess if I wasn't catching alot of fish I would remove them.
I custom paint has d baits and believe me they work. It’s all about the color per day and water. I paint per what people want but whites, blues and greens just work. Pearlized helps too certain times.
When y’all are using the Dr Juice do y’all use the shrimp scent for all soft plastics such as swim baits, jerk Shads, and curly tails or just for the shrimp lures?
@@mxt9945 So I just re-watched this and just caught the gulp thing. I had given up on them and said well I will try some more under my popping cork again last week. I opened a BRAND NEW bag of white and pink tailed shrimp and it actually tore putting the hook in on the trout eye jig! Done with it. Z-man and other brands including yours are way tougher!
On west coast it doesn’t really matter, for me at least and my friends. I do little experiments w different lures all the time when the bite is one and the fish just keep hitting. Tides, feeding habits, weather is what matters I guess. It’s like surfing, if you surf the same spot every day forever you’ll have good days for sure, but the conditions don’t always line up to turn it on. Same applies to fishing, wind shelter, tide pull- the only variable that differs is instead of swell you pay attention to what the fish having been doing and that’s just something for both hobbies you have to be on the water actually putting in time to see it for yourself and make mental notes on patterns you see
Have been born and raised is southeast Louisiana in between lake Maurepas and lake Pontchartrain on north and south pass my dad had a shrimp boat but I worked from 6th grade through high school running my trout lines down there catching catfish to sale we had a camp on north pass win I was born then sold it and me and my dad built a new camp on south pass had it for 3 years sold it and built another one right about 1/3 of a mile up the pass from it so west of it and I have had more than my share of sun blisters and burns and what kills me is the people who think just because the sun isn’t out and it’s cloudy that they are alright and don’t have to worry about it then they end up not being able walk or move for 3 or 4 days because they so burnt and or blistered !! Also I almost got on the Floro bandwagon but the first thing I used it for was white perch and with 4# and 6# pound line see what was really going on and I use PE for the most part to mono with a FG for everything but small fishing I use mono and have never had any problems where floro user’s seam to always be fighting with something a lil nick in the line knots that aren’t just perfect and so on and on so I think I did the best thing I could have ever dun to stay as they put it now days old school 👍👍😎😎😎😎
I got a deal , buy 1 get 1 free, old sweepfire Diawa reels, been lasting for 11 years, I use them gotcha plugging off piers for Spanish&blues. They still work great.
We gave all our clunky offshore stuff to neighbors and use the Daiwa BGMQ and Fuego for inshore kayak fishing you can't beat the price on SS insider tackle. Even the guest price beats our local tackle shops.

doesnt matter how light your reel and rod gets if its not balanced it gets heavy. rods bottom part has to be long for the balance. if not, tip part weights on you.
Thanks guys. Imm 67 and on SSI so my funds are limited. I've been fishing all my life. I need to know about rods and reels. I can't afford no $200-300 reel what a good reel that's inexpensive and a rod. Everything change so quick it's hard to keep up. You guys are great I watch your videos all the time. Can you help.
Penn wrath combos are on sale 40$ at my local Walmart, they are some good combos for the price. I have the 7ft rod with I think a 3000 or 4000 reel as a backup setup and it performs well for the price. I also seen a Shimano setup for around the same price. Daiwa is always a good go to as well.
@@justinburgan4184I concurr with Penn. Other brands are great too, but I have had my cheap penn rods and reels far outlast other cheap combos, especially in salt. I have a Penn Fierce combo with power pro braid (costs more upfront but lasts multiple seasons), and bulk rolls of #20, #30, and #50 mono for leaders. For less than $200, I had everything but terminal tackle, and it has lasted me years already

@@Saltstrong thanks.. I predominantly surf fish so I tie my own cannonball rigs for red drum. 50lb mono Shock leader to a 150lb Rosco barrel swivel to a 2-3 ft 100lb mono leader…snelled to a circle hook. I tie uni knots to the barrel swivel.
I absolutely despise aerosol sunscreens... Only really use sunblock on my face and hands as I can't stand wearing gloves or a buff. I do like the hoods on fishing shirts, but kind of pain when facing the wind.

I use Blue Lizard, its free of all the chemicals that are bad for you. Main ingredients are Titanium Oxide and Zinc Oxide. It's Australian but sold in the US.
When picking a leader, yes abrasion resistance is an important factor, but what about visibility? We’ve all been sold on the idea that fluorocarbon “disappears” underwater. Do you have any testing to prove or disprove that idea? I would love to see any results you may have because if I can spend less money on mono leader that would be great.
If there was "truth in advertising" for the fishing biz "Gulp" would be called "Gag". After a day of fishing with it, you come home smelling like you just got off at the morgue. The test results for Flouro versus Mono are all well and good for abrasion and knot strength, but what about visibility? Isn't that the reason for for using Flouro in the first place? Does it make a difference or not?
Guys... What's your view on Daiwa using those MagSeal ... the Issue is that the Mag Seal Oils is not availability and I don't trust the local service ..
I've had quality fluorocarbon line last for years on my spool. Mono has to be changed it out yearly or more often. That should be taken into consideration when comparing costs.
To be honest though, depending on where in the world you live, lures can be pretty expensive. In S.A. for example simple soft plastics sets you back ZAR80 - 200 a piece (USD 4 - 10)!! Let's not even think Rapala!!! Crank baits prices ZAR 200 - 800 (USD 10 to 40)!! Live bait is just so easy to catch and way way way cheaper. If for example (nudge nudge wink wink) Salt Strong start to export cool stuff then HELL YES I will stick with lures.

Y'all are full of good advice. Especially to the novice angler.
Not changing lures is terrible advice though.
Thanks for the feedback!
The only one I'm one fence with is Daiwa reels, don't really feel the quality is there until you go over 200 bucks.
I haven't bought an expensive Daiwa but using friends vs my 100+ dollar reels I can probably confirm this Is true
I got a deal , buy 1 get 1 free, old sweepfire Diawa reels, been lasting for 11 years, I use them gotcha plugging off piers for Spanish&blues. They still work great.
Daiwa BG and Daiwa Fuego LT are my egg beaters. Theyre still silky smooth since day 1. I dont need to baby em like my shimanos.
We gave all our clunky offshore stuff to neighbors and use the Daiwa BGMQ and Fuego for inshore kayak fishing you can't beat the price on SS insider tackle. Even the guest price beats our local tackle shops.
I’m a fan of the pro lure D36 the jackel chubby and the new 2022 shimano bantem range
I buy 2 expensive lures.
Daiwa double clutch 95mm
And the nomad squidtrex.
Both so worthy of the dollars.
The rest are cheap soft plastics.
So true! It's like in many other domains - selling to humans is the number one priority... Keep up the good work brothers!
Thanks Francois! 💪

Do you guys buy top of the price hooks or just generic hooks? Huge difference in price.
We use good quality hooks that will stand up to big fish!
@@Saltstrong Thanks for the reply.
doesnt matter how light your reel and rod gets if its not balanced it gets heavy. rods bottom part has to be long for the balance. if not, tip part weights on you.
Good input!
Great video guys 🔥!
Thanks Ed! 💪
Great discussion !! 👍
Glad that you enjoyed it Pablo! 💪
I second the Penn recommendation. I've been fishing cheap Penn spinning combos hard and they hold up pretty well in my opinion.
What about visibility between floro vs mono?

We have had some solid luck with the Alabama Leprechaun for cobia! 🔥
@@Saltstrong I need to order then👍😎
Do I have to join the insider club every year ?
I joined you last year. Don’t remember all the particulars.
Tight line from Maine.
You do have to renew the membership yearly unless you are a lifetime member. For Insider membership info, go to www.saltstrong.com/pricing for more info! 💪
Oh boy! Don’t I know. I too have mannnnny lures that caught me at the store but yet to catch a fish. They look pretty, just don’t catch fish.
That's true. Many lures are designed to catch fisherman instead of fish. 💪
How about tying mono to barrel swivels ? My guess it’s a better connection than braid to barrel swivel ?
Hey Paul, I think it would definitely depend on the application.
Never use flrocarbon line or braid i have used Stren line for years never had a problem clear for salt water moss green for fresh water
100% agree on DOA shrimp, they don’t cast as far as other brands either..
Thanks for the feedback!
Haha I’ve got a live target review coming soon and when I was buying the baits to film the video I bought 3 or 4 baits and my total was 50$
Thank you so much guys
Our pleasure!
I use the snap swivels and wire leader to make lanyards for random things. That's about it.
Good Info! 💪😂
3in DOA c.a.l are my fav paddle tail and absolutely slay fish... Zman are great also but they don't kick hard and glide through the water like doa
I only use craws for bass
They can be great for bass when they are bedding. 💪
I absolutely despise aerosol sunscreens... Only really use sunblock on my face and hands as I can't stand wearing gloves or a buff. I do like the hoods on fishing shirts, but kind of pain when facing the wind.
Sunblock Question: What are some zinc sunblock products you recommend? I wear clothing but would like to add the sunblock for my face.
Great info and thanks.
We like this one:

I use Blue Lizard, its free of all the chemicals that are bad for you. Main ingredients are Titanium Oxide and Zinc Oxide. It's Australian but sold in the US.
Thank you for the flouro garbage. Copolomyer spelt wrong and Big game. Love it
Thank you Joe on the sunblock info. That’s invaluable sir!!!
The fact that fluoro doesn't disappear in water can be seen in this experiment: www.saltstrong.com/articles/fluorocarbon-monofilament-sink-float-test/
It’s obvious that Luke hates the “like diamonds”. We feel you Luke, we feel you.
He secretly loves it!
Guys... What's your view on Daiwa using those MagSeal ... the Issue is that the Mag Seal Oils is not availability and I don't trust the local service ..
Waiting for the Gulp vs. Power Prawn/Dr Juice battle.
💪💪💪
I've had quality fluorocarbon line last for years on my spool. Mono has to be changed it out yearly or more often. That should be taken into consideration when comparing costs.
Good Info! 💪
The best lure still is a fresh life or dead bite !
Beast hook skin hooked on a DOA shrimp. You won’t change my mind.
great video
Thanks!
Penn 113H Senator.....😁
After watching your abrasion tests I do not touch floro anymore.
👍
To be honest though, depending on where in the world you live, lures can be pretty expensive. In S.A. for example simple soft plastics sets you back ZAR80 - 200 a piece (USD 4 - 10)!! Let's not even think Rapala!!! Crank baits prices ZAR 200 - 800 (USD 10 to 40)!! Live bait is just so easy to catch and way way way cheaper. If for example (nudge nudge wink wink) Salt Strong start to export cool stuff then HELL YES I will stick with lures.
Thanks for the feedback and insight. We are working on getting international shipping set up, so hopefully soon!!
Did you say that toothpaste is really good to put on your artificial lures?

I agree with you kids 100 percent. Love how you dealt with Gulp: they work but a very bad deal overall. Keeping it real!
Good Info! Thanks for watching! ! 💪
Ketchup works great for getting the smell of Dr juice off your hands
Good Info! 💪💪
Ya'll are awesome.
Swivels are good for trolling. That's the only use I can see for them.
Don't hate on my savage gear!
Neck gaiters - hate them! I now wear a sun screening hoodie and pull up the hood and put on my hat with a brim. Then cover my nose and cheeks with sun block. Buffs suffocate me!
Franks hot sauce and Dr Juice - I put that sh*t on everything.
💪😂
You guys are GAME changers, I love these type of videos the honest truth is all most of us are after. I've been here "following" since DAY (one) and all this INFO is SPOT on. #thanks #lovesaltstrong #jesus
Haha you guys need to try west coast buzz bombs
Noted!
I see you guys never musky fished it's not so mush the weight of the reel it's the lures themselves tried lighter reels they did not last I don't go as much as I used to because iam 62 years of age can't last as long throwing them 2 to 10 oz lures
Yeah, that is a different application altogether. Super awesome you are having the solid success with the musky!
Peroxide will get the scent off.
Thanks for the tip!
Guys ... I been flowing your guys for sometime.. Plenty of eye-opening information.. Needed some information about this brand.. **Ocean Born** Lure .. cant seem to find anything about them..
It's a brand started by Patrick Sebile, dude knows his stuff and his lures catch fish!
@@dodgenbuell Just that I thinking twice .. can't seem to find any review on his product by any anglers .. Looking at those long casting lures.. do they cast that far..??
@@rozariofernandes6455 Sold under 'A Band of Anglers' - Patrick Sebile. Not a fan of Ocean Born Pencil Poppers but some of the soft plastics are ok.
the market for catching fishermen is much larger than catching fish the echo chamber is huge here
