Depends who your asking 😅 I love my job as a software engineer, but many would never want to sit in a chair for that long of a time. And happens to be a good paying job to pay for my car hobby😅
Probably one of the best skills to have is knowing how to research ie: learn to google. It'll help you when searching through forums or if people have done the same build and what issues they've run into and how they fixed it. Much love to you guys, love all the knowledge yall provide.
Figuring out where the 10mm is hidden is more than a skill. It's a blessing. Found it the other day, and I'm pretty sure the clouds opened in glory as rays of sunshine were casting down on me. Then the 13mm went missing.
1. is simply how to do an oil change 2. How to jack up a car (where are the strong points of the vehicle) 3. Just know how to general check up such as battery life, how much thread left or life of your tires, doing tire rotation etc etc 4. Mod the hell out of it and go full send 🤣
Stubbornness. You may run of out patience, money, tools, friends might tell you to give up on that build, a hundred things will fail and go wrong. If you can find the will to continue after all that and still find love and happiness in this hobby then you are golden and can make pretty much anything you want.
A slept on skill for auto enthusiasts is honestly planning . This could be planning your day & time for friends to all meet and help. Planning by having the tools required for the job out and in direct reach. Also, planning your build! Too often you’ll see things that just don’t match the overall look the owner was trying to achieve. This goes back to having the proper color palette for complimentary looks, aero follows a similar look (aggressive or modest) & definitely building the car for what it’s actually going to be used for! Can’t believe how many times I hear “it’s a track car” and then see extremely stretched all seasons and an alignment that screams pep boys .
Alex came in first and second on your list. Wow. But I do kind of agree. They're all cool, but Alex gives me those, "this guy's been through what I'm going through" vibes. And I like his speech patters.
Lol agreed that was the most ridiculous shit ive ever heard. Im a car guy but 100% know ill never be as cool as a dude that owns a decom fighter from any era. Cars guys dont come close to plane guys.
We all learn from experience. Hindsight is always 20/20 and with my experience I’ve found it’s always super important to 1. Have as much knowledge as possible, and 2. ALWAYS use the right tools; no cutting corners
If you buy a project car that's at least 12 years old or older I personally suggest a good drill and drill bits for all those bolts you about break. That comes even before thinking about re-tapping that hole with the fancy set Alex described. 🤣🍻
Man I really hear what Alex is saying, I always had to take over in the garage for my big brother when I was growing up because I was the one who wouldn't scream at his 25 year old brake lines for being just a little too finickey.
the main skill is knowing how to find answers and to determine if those answers are good. So investigation and logic. Having background knowledge of physics, chemistry, and some material science is extremely helpful to builds or to even making general performance improvements
that comm, that comment about the broken broom handle used for the hood is soooo true, couldn’t afford new hood struts until I found out they were only 22$, and still I only bought one.
Best skill is honestly knowing when to ask for help or alternatively going to beat the hell out of your other project so you can think strait only to come back and have the same issue until you realize your putting the bolt in the WRONG HOLE.. breathe out and takes hammer to rusty piece of metal
As an avation mechanic I couldn't disagree more with what was said at the beginning. Giant flying busses with turbines that suck squeeze burn and blow out 60,000hp seem pretty impressive to me. And then you have cool general avation and experimental aircraft that use the familiar reciporcating engines we've all come to know. But I still like cars better
They should make a vid on when certain tools are out, something probably probably went horribly wrong. Eg tap/die set, 2 1/2 pound hammer, any puller, giant pc of pipe extension on a breaker bar, etc.
So, I work at a parts store. If you are coming in looking for the things that hold up your hood or your tailgate or whatever please do not call them struts. I can't tell you how many times I've looked up struts for people's cars only for them to get pissed off and tell me they weren't looking for suspension... Repeat after me- Lift Support That's what they're called in the computer it will make it faster and easier and a lot less painful for everybody if you just call them that. Thank you for attending my PSA.
1. ALWAYS READ THE DIRECTIONS! 2. Buy a Haynes/Chilton manual 3. Lay out all parts & necessary tools BEFORE starting project 4. Go slow. I wish I had been able to give 16 year old me this same advice.
