Hi everyone! This in-depth painting tutorial was originally filmed for my Art Process Club. I'm closing the art club on 19th Feb in order to concentrate on building my UA-cam community, so I'm making some of the content publicly available for everyone to enjoy.
Wow. This is the first demonstration that makes me understand colored pencil uses. And the depth of mixed media additions. Thank you so much. Clearly you have experimented so much in depth yo discover the nuances of each material in layering effects. I'm so grateful you are willing to share this
Gorgeous! Your films are always so beautiful & calming. 🙏 Very inspiring! Thank you for being so generous with your techniques, it’s lovely to see the picture gradually emerging before us. An excellent choice of music too! 🙌💖👩🏻🎨🎨✍️😘 xxx
I love the music you choose in your videos, and I love watching you create. It makes me smile to see the beautiful creation of art come alive on the page. You have such a beautiful talent, thank you for sharing.
Beautiful, Natasha. I am so impressed how your memory & imagination work together and your use of a variety of pen, paint & pastel create such enchanting landscapes. Wonderful to watch & listen to. 😊
Wow, I found this so very inspiring. I Immediately got out the "toys" to have a play. Thanks Natasha, your channel is just rich in content and good vibes. Happy New year XX
Tremendous work. Really beautiful piece. I love all the texture work you broke down here, & the color scheme, & the whole thing comes together so cohesively.
Another beautiful video, Natasha! I really enjoyed seeing this work come to life, and the voice-over plus the music really set a lovely calm mood. Thank you for sharing this process!💕
Thank you for sharing how you layer to create vibrant color, details and texture in your landscapes. I love the smoke coming from the chimney, it looks so real. I always learn something new when I watch your videos.
So beautiful. Thank you! I love your colors and the overall contrast in both color and values. So cool to watch you layer pencils to create gradations in both tone and color. I'm glad I discovered your channel. I'm sure the video, which looks great, still does not do justice to the vibrance of the actual print itself. I'm curious if you have you ever worked with Lyra Rembrandt color pencils? I've read that they have more oil than wax and blend well. I'd love to see you draw with them one day. Although I see you already have your own favorite tools.
It's really lovely to se the art coming onto being, and to hear your thoughts as you work, your videos really inspire me to experiment more with mixed media in my own work and in my sketchbooks. My Tinted Black Gansai paints arrived along with the Derwent tinted water soluable charcol pencils too and I love working with them already on regular paper and toned papers, and metallics also look amazing layerd on top of them.Thank you for reccommending them,I also got some Posca pens to try after seeing you use them to such great effect in your work. The colours you put together in this piece are really stunning and the finished piece has the look of an engraving.I could imagine your art making amazing engravings or maybe screen prints.Your videos show just how drawing is such a creatively engaging thing to do.
Ah, it's great to hear the the tinted blacks arrived, and the charcoal pencils too! Interesting to hear that metallics look good on top of them - I'm experimenting a little bit with gold metallic paints and inks at the moment too. Enjoy exploring your new materials! Such fun to play around as you never know where it may lead. :)
@@NatashaNewtonArt I use FW metallic and pearlescent acrylic inks,as well as metallic gouache and metallic/pearlescent Gansai Tambi watercolours and metallic gel pens and now metallic posca paint pens
Thank you for this tutorial Natasha! I love my luminance pencils 😊 I want to experiment with different mark making and vary the amount of pressure I use. Currently I draw with a lot of pressure to create block colours and I love how bold and vibrant the pencils are, but I think it would be more interesting if I included some more softer marks too.
Hi Emma! One of the things that helped me to fall in love with coloured pencils last year was the realisation that I could use them in so many different ways. Layering, mixed media, and also using them in a softer way to make interesting textures and marks. They're so much fun to work with!
Absolutely fantastic video. I love the use of different media, again very inspiring. I have been using my coloured pencils a lot more since I started watching your videos. Thank you so much...loved the music as well.
I just loved watching your second art class! I finished the first one earlier today and this one was so lovely! I really enjoy seeing inside your art making process. It gives me some ideas for My art. I have to deal with being chronically ill and making art can be difficult. I have trouble because Mom has to help me make the art, kind of like a co Collaborator. She has to get all my supplies together and set it up for me, then I make it. Another artist Linda Marcille talked about making an art nest she called it, for when you're not feeling well and keeping all your supplies together in a kind of diaper bag. A very good idea! But my art nest is too heavy for Mom to carry! Oh well, live and learn. I'll just have to let Mom get everything she can. I've had a hard time coming to terms with being ill. I'm no longer independent, I rely on others for everything now, and I'm like a little baby. I can't get up and walk anymore and I hated that. I have to do everything when others want to do it, not when I want to. Ah, life throws you curveballs sometimes...Anyway dear be well! Take care.
That was so lovely, thank-you for taking the time to show your process. It’s fascinating and absolutely stunning. I wondered what paper you use for this mixed media work? Thank you so much.
Thank you so much, Alice! I'm using hot pressed Arches 140lb paper. I originally bought it for watercolour but love it more for pencil drawing and mixed media!
Hi Natasha love this as I always enjoy your videos and supreme art work but I'm a bit confused at the postage lines on the far hills , I thought it spoilt them
I loved everything ❤but I can’t wrap my head around the gray pisco Strikes on the mountain could you help explain to me what should it be ? Great video as always 🥰
I love the way you use coloured pencils. And you've inspired me not to be afraid of allowing the white of the paper to glisten through. My cursory observation is that a lot of cp artist's on yt seek opacity, hence the use of solvents and burnishing. I notice you don't do an initial sketch in graphite, how do you correct cp mistakes?
Thank you! I think it really adds a lightness and texture when you allow the paper to show through. I use a very pale coloured pencil to very loosely draw the initial sketch. Any minor mistakes/alterations are covered when I add the layers, but I do have a very good eraser that can correct some mistakes; the Koh-I-Noor 'Magic' eraser.
Gorgeous work! I think I’ll have to try some of the hot pressed paper for color pencil too. I followed along and made my own little scene (so fun!!) but it was a lot harder than it looks to get deep dark areas of pencil like you do. Might be partly because I’m using a paper with more texture maybe? Anyway, thank you for the “class”!!
Hi Kara! I love that you followed along. :) You'll definitely need smooth paper to achieve the depth of colour in the darker areas. But I also push quite hard!
This is so beautiful. What do you use to seal it? Do you get prints of this and sell the originals? love seeing how you used all these different mediums. Thanks so much!
Hi Gwen! I don't seal them with anything as they will be framed behind glass. :) I sell the originals and occasionally make prints of certain pieces of work!
i love the way this looks when done! A question about the layering of mixed media - I have read that its not a good idea to put acrylic or watercolor/gouache on top of oil (lean over fat principle) because over time as everything dries at different speeds, it can cause problems. Since posca pens are acrylic and gouache is waterbased and the color pencils are oil or wax based, I am wondering if this will be an issue here as well. Pencils are a dry medium so maybe not. Do you have any old art works (at least 5 or 10 years) where you have layered posca or other waterbased paint over oil/wax based pencils? I am curious to know if they are holding up all right or not. I would love to try this but am worried it will fall apart over time. Thanks
That's a good point. I've only recently started layering mixed media like this, so I don't have any older works created in this way. I would think that it would be fine because the pencils are a dry medium, as you say.
a question; although I understand the interpretive aspect of your markings, I wonder about the rust coloured markings in the hills, if you were intending their constant paired design is to signify leaves, trees, or something winged. I find it distracts me and causes the question.
@@NatashaNewtonArt Brilliant! My concentration until now has been watercolor but I'm determined to branch out a bit. So I have plenty of Arches on hand. Thank you for the reply!

Does it matter what paper you use? What paper do you use customarily?
I really like Arches hot pressed paper or Aquarella paper from Choosing Keeping when I'm working in mixed media/coloured pencil.

For me, they're representing little plants - I like to incorporate a more patterned element into my work, which isn't necessarily realistic. :)
Hey Natasha….about what size overall is that painting? Is it on Bristol paper of hot press watercolor?
I think (if I recall correctly) that it was roughly A5 size, possibly a bit larger. And I think I used Arches hot press watercolour paper.
