There is a type of bee (or well, types) called the 'vulture bee'. It derives its diet from carrion, which is why it was probably named that. Therefore, since bees make honey we can presume that the honey these bees make is derived from meat. Therefore, meat honey exists. A bonus fact is that they use the same gland to produce this meat honey as bees tend to use that gland to create royal jelly (plus, they are stingless!).

I love Virgil’s early work. My favorite is one of his poems titled “Now I’m motivated”. It depicts Virgil atop a massive other-worldly structure, sitting on a lawn chair. Very emotional stuff.

I remember translating the chapters of the Aeneid in Latin class, easily the best way to learn the language.

Virgil is legendary for his writing but what about his MOTIVATION?
Farms apparently
Having translated Virgil in high school and later read the fully translated version of the Aeneid in my freshman year of college, I can safely say that he was easier than a lot of other writers/orators. The only person easier to translate and read is Caesar, but that is kind of the point since he is trying to make it accessible to as many people as possible including farmers. Horace is more difficult for me to translate, and Cicero’s Pro Caelio remains one of the most migraine inducing things to translate.
oh god, cicero. i have some frustrating memories about the guy, i had to read the Phillipicae for class and sometimes you could literally spend fifteen minutes just figuring out all the main and sub clauses. must have been a nightmare to listen to as a roman peasant…
i haven‘t read any Virgil yet, so i might give it a try soon - my high school makes us translate Tacitus for finals and i‘m still looking for something to remind my brain with that nice, enjoyable latin exists while i try to get through the mess of missing words, blatant political agenda and purposefully incomprehensible structure

It should have been added that the Aeneid is one of the first BOOKS ever. Infact the poet Martial commented about the new use of publishing writings in "codex" and not in scrolls, and how even the Aeneid (that was sold with a portrait of Virgil on the cover) was small and portable in that format.
So when books were new, the first thing they thought to put on the cover was the deceased author? That's quite wholesome actually!
Now I want to write a book with MY face on the cover. Not a book about me or anything, I'm just the cover. You can judge with book by ME, muah ha ha.

This Georgics that Virgil is most fascinating! I had never heard of it prior but based on your description, I am immediately stuck by how Virgil combined seemingly unrelated fields of study and art into a consolidated final product! He mixed practical farming with government WITH poetry! That is astounding and polymath in nature!
I feel as though the greatest creators and the smartest thinkers are those who excel not in their separated fields but those who excel in multiple fields and are enlightened enough to bridge all these fields together as a definitive product. These are the true geniuses, the ones who can see beyond specific the separations and relate the seemingly unrelated subjects. Even rarer amongst these geniuses are those can successfully communicate this commonality to the masses so they can see the connectivity as well! And when these geniuses create something, their work is infinitely layered since it can be understood from a multitude of different angles and applied to multiple different fields!
Grasping the commonalities between seemingly unrelated subjects gives credence that there is a higher truth where everything is connected. I have always been partial to idealism, so I personally find this thought of everything (and by proxy everyone) being connected, related, and united _very_ comforting indeed! It's almost as if there is a "Force" that binds all living things and hold the galaxy at large together. Then again, there just might be. 😉

Fun anecdote: In her 70s, Ursula K. Le Guin had the sudden epiphany “You know, I’ve never read The Aeneid in the original Latin. I should do that.” And do she Drummer up her old Latin training, got a dictionary, and went one stanza a day until she’d finished it. Then she wrote Lavinia, her final novel (which, admittedly, I haven’t yet read, but will soon).

Excellent video as always, Blue! One thing I think is really interesting about Vergil is that he is emblematic of one of Rome's defining qualities, the way it absorbs other cultures and populations into itself. A professor that I TAed for talked about how the name Vergilius is not Latin in origin, but Celtic, which makes sense given him and his family were from the formerly Celtic Cisalpine Gaul. So, like, Rome's greatest poet was a Romanized Celt.
This is great! The Aeneid often gets overshadowed by the Iliad and the Odyssey, but it's the one closest to my heart because it was basically what my entire four years of high school Latin built up towards.

In school, I was the only one who studied classical civilisation. It was lonely but I still loved every bit of it, from the myths to the Roman/Greek history. It is also how I found this channel all the way back in 2015! As for the Aeneid, I distinctly remember the many pages dedicated to Aeneas relentlessly chasing Turnus until he killed him. A great piece of work.

For those interested in the Aeneas story, there is a movie duology about him, composed of the 1961 film "The Trojan War" (in which he appears as a supporting character) and its 1962 sequel "The Avenger" (this time as the protagonist). In both installments, he is played by Steve Reeves.

Is it just me or are his history videos picking back up in frequency? I love it
I think the thing that got me to stick with learning Latin for 3 years compared to the 1 year of French in high school was the fact that translating the Aeneid was way more interesting than trying to translate random bits of conversation. Sure, it's a dead language that I don't actually get to use if I travel somewhere, but it was hella fun to do. This was a nice reminder of one of my favorite high school classes.
Despite the two being born so many years apart from one another, we should still analyze Dante and Virgil to see if they share anything in common... Aside from the fact that they both came from some not so chill Italian cities, and wrote epic poems for the masses. It is safe to say that they both had hella lonely lives too right?...
They had pretty different lives. While in Florence Dante had several good friends (Guido Cavalcanti and Lapo Gianni are remembered in his poems), and a brother (that was the one that managed the family's businesses). He had been first a knight (at the battle of Campaldino, and he should have done well, since he was one of the selected knights Florence sent later to the siege of the Castle of Caprona) and then a politician.
During the exile, he was much more bitter, but he had a wife, three sons and a daughter.
Since he was famous, Dante still occasionally acted as a diplomat on behalf of the princes that hosted him. Infact he died, at 54, of malaria, that he contracted during one of those embassies.
@@neutronalchemist3241 I do remember the exile part that Dante went through, but I never caught that he was married and had four kids... I always thought that he was cursed to die alone with his infatuation with Beatrice before and after her death. I'll probably have to rewatch the Dante history video Blue made a while back.

It was yesterday that I needed this man :D Also why does baltic filology make me learn classical literature? We are northern europians that never had anything to do with the greeks and romans.
Also the phonemic vowel length of Classical Latin really makes Latin poetry and prose flow very nicely. It kinda sucks how much Latin literature gets slept on.
Oh and my favourite bee fact, is that sometimes bees will sleep in flowers with others from their hive, and they hold feet. It's adorable.
