    The MacBook Air exists because...students. It’s still the same productivity machine in 2018 as when it was released. It’s relatively affordable, and has those qualities that people want when buying a Mac. It’s light, powerful enough, has great build quality, great battery life, and as always, the ecosystem. Sure it’s not as powerful as the competition. Sure the display (according to you) is wack. But you know what? It’s a great budget Mac. College students everywhere have MacBook Airs. They have no need for something as powerful as a Pro, and plus, it’s too expensive. The regular MacBook? They are still students. They need all day battery life that the Air offers. They need the USB ports for the flash drives. They don’t want to have to buy extra dongles to carry around and loose. And lastly, it’s cheap. When you’re a student, you are trying to just make ends meet. The Air is the perfect blend of affordability and productivity. And that’s why the Air still exists. For students. Who agrees?

      bleh bleh When Apple releases a new product, chances are that it contains mostly old hardware, with 1 or 2 updated components. Thus, the change compared to the old version is hardly noticeable. The joke is that Apple could sell MacBook Air as "new" and no-one would know it's actually old.

      I agree with you. I just bought one rather then the upgraded 2018 one with the Retina upgraded screen. Reason? I used my brothers older Macbook Air and felt the screen posed no issues. Looks just fine to me. So, when Black Friday/Cyber Monday came along and Apple discounted the older 2017 model by 200 bucks I jumped on it. Even bought it with an upgraded processor . :) Very happy.

      I bet also Apple finds Core M cpus limitations (slower than a ULV CPU, not TB support) a reason to dont kill the Macbook Air.
      If those rumors are true we could see a new macbook with thunderbolt 3 and a dual core Ryzen APU with more performance than that Core M crap.
      Then the Macbook Air could rest in peace.

    My Acer Chromebook 14 at 300 dollars came with a 1080p IPS display. Granted it's not the best one, but colour gamut is similar and IPS has those viewing angle benefits, though the MBA screen is still brighter. If they just put an IPS panel in here, it would be an appealing package still even with no other changes (though a processor update would of course also be nice). I'm NOT saying the CB14 is comparable overall to the MBA, since I keep getting upset responses for some reason, the MBA is obviously more capable, just wish it got IPS.

    When I bought a new PC this year, this video made me move away from the air. For the same money I bought a supposedly more powerful Windows machine. After 5 months of bugs and problems (curiously mainly with MS apps like Office, OneDrive and Skype that I use daily to run my business), I bought a good old Air thats getting the job done.
    I'm not hating on the video - I actually agree with most of it, specially about the screen resolution. But I personally prefer battery life over screen resolution. And, at this price point, I think a Macbook Air is still a killer machine.
    Maybe Windows is catching up, but in my experience the Air combo (great industrial design, great battery life and trustworthy OS) is superior even after all these years.

    • @kipa_chu
      @kipa_chu 6 років тому +10

      Julio Bonetti don't over exaggerate it. 5 months of bugs? Are you kidding me ! Is this the first time you are using a computer? I mean who in the world faces 5 months of bugs in MS office. My dad uses a 2012 windows laptop and only thing he uses is MS office suite and Google chrome. He never had a single problem and he didn't even formated his lappy since 2012.
      Apple fanboys like to present windows and Android as "laggy and buggy" then what they actually are! Infact softwares like adobe photoshop lags in macbook air. But hey, its you who are a victim of successful marketing campaign so i got no problems. Enjoy your outdated apple products.

    Love mine for college. Had the choice of looking at the macbook and the macbook air. I do wish it had a 1080p screen that was a little better. But I use mine for video editing and school work. I find the keyboard much more comfortable. I got the i7 version, and video editing even in 4k, even though I am not a professional at editing, still keeps up with final cut pro x. It also does amazing when I hook it up to my 1080p monitor. So, yes for someone who edits videos for their main job like you, it does not make sense. But for people starting off and not knowing all these special editing things, it does not make sense and falls behind. I cannot see myself editing 4k on the macbook with the, as i call it "cell phone processor" because it will eventually thermal throttle and loose performance. to each their own opinion, but i love my macbook air.

    Two years ago I learned how to 3D model using Blender on a MacBook Air. Now I have a job as a 3D modeler for a game development team. On that same laptop I frequently edited videos using Final Cut with Logic running simultaneously. On occasion, I'd even play both the Final Cut project and the Logic project together to see the video against the music I was writing. It held up. The display wasn't great, but it was manageable. Did I mention I was a student? Yeah, the screen's good enough for writing and reading a ton of text.
    Yes, it's a shame they didn't update the processor to a 7th gen chip. And the screen still isn't optimal. But the computer's got a hell of a lot going for it:
    - reasonable, though not great price
    - reasonable performance (enough for people to do occasional serious content creation, though I wouldn't recommend this if you make content on a regular basis and have the money for something more powerful)
    - STELLAR battery life. I miss the battery life on that thing so badly.
    - PORTS. MOTHER FUCKING PORTS. This alone makes it Apple's best laptop. Seriously, MagSafe, 2x USB 3.0, and a FREAKING SD CARD READER. 1 Thunderbolt/mini displayport is the only drawback, ports-wise. And that's not a huge drawback if you ask me.
    - Looks-it's not Apple's sleekest or thinnest laptop anymore, but it's still an all-aluminum unibody build with nice curves and edges
    Honestly, the three things that are most important for it are (1) battery life, (2) convenient set of ports, and (3) aluminum build. It's not that bad of a laptop, really. Try using one every day for 4 years, it'll change your perspective. I only got a new computer 10 months ago, so it's not like I last used it in 2012.

    removable ssd. 12" has soldered in ssd. 12" can also easily be killed by an eBay charger which when combined with soldered in ssd just sucks. the air will tolerate and rock an ebsu charger just fine. once the 12-inch machine starts to hit that two year mark where most people will have bought a knock-off charger for them the amount of people coming in for data recovery should be staggering in contrast to older laptops

    I’ll say this much about this MacBook in 2022 though. I purchased one of these for less than $300 for school and there’s no question it will run for the 2 years I need it to. The fact this is the last MacBook with the glowy logo on the back. The fact you can run mac os monterey for super cheap is what makes this thing really attractive in 2022.

    I bought one of these a little over a year ago for $600 new on amazon during a Black Friday sale. Gotta say it’s been one of the nicest laptops I’ve had. Upgradeable storage up to 2TB is possible on this plus you can put a 256 flush fit SD card on it.
    With the 8GB or ram and still with the 5th Gen Intel i5 it’s pretty snappy machine.
    I mostly use it for managing music and movies and some light work and UA-cam. But still for $600 I’m very impressed by this.

    I bought a 13' 2015 model and ive had it since then. It works amazingly but the screen is definitely a problem, viewing angles are terrible but it saves up a lot of battery in turn. I got the 4gb ram model and it never slows down on regular use. Only with intensive tasks. Overall a pretty good computer and worth the price for me.

    I used to own a macbook air. It was a fantastic computer while I was in college. The battery life was fantastic, I was able to take it on campus and use it all day doing homework not worrying about keeping it plugged in. Some days I wouldn't even bother bringing the charger with me cause of how long the battery lasted. It was very light and small and didn't even notice a huge weight difference when it was in my backpack. The base configuration was more than enough to do even higher performance things like mid to light video editing and photoshop, I was even able to run a few games like bioshock with mid settings with ease.
    I did have a few gripes about the air that soon lead me to buy a MBP. The screen was terrible. It had a tn panel which had horrible viewing angles and wasn't that bright (good luck using it outside on a sunny day). The thick silver bezel around the screen was an eye sore to look at and was very noticeable, I wouldn't mind if it was that thick but had a black bezel. And I wish it had a force touch trackpad.
    So basically if it had a retina MBP screen and a force touch trackpad on the air I would have had no problem. Then again I know there is the 12 inch macbook now with those features and is small and has a big battery like the air but it has its own issues such as the more expensive price, less ports, keyboard, etc. that also deters me from getting it. So I bought a 2015 15 inch MBP and I love it!

    • @User-cb4jm
      @User-cb4jm 2 роки тому

      The screen is crap, but maybe you haven't tried anything better. Nobody is asking for a 4K display just a 1080p one. The worst part is that its TN so it looked washed out and has terrible viewing angles comapred to IPS. Some people will justify anything and pretend something unacceptable by modern Windows standards is ok bc this has an Apple logo on it. And I use a MacBook Pro and iPhone... but if you buy this old Air you know nothing about laptops and are just buying a 2010 laptop for $1000 because its Apple and looks cool.

    I recently bought one, (this week actually), it was the 8 gig ram and 128 ssd model, and frankly, i dont need any more. It has the connections i need, its compatible with my phone, and works like a charm for my use. Meetings is a breeze when i dont have to consider the battery life, cause i know it can hold the full day and more, and the keyboard is fantastic. The screen dont bother me at all. I rather have the 2 usb ports and the port for external graphics (as i use projectors alot, and have the adapter for all kinds).
    The price was an obvious selling point, BUT, the main reason for just this machine, is that its one of the macs that i have found with less errors than most. ITs buildt for schools etc, and can really hold its own. I also have a 21 inch imac, and they work fantastic together.

    I was drooling over MacBooks today while at the Apple store (getting my niece's iPhone 8 plus repaired; it needed repair because of what she did, but Apple fixed it for free anyway), and gravitated to the Air, as I always do. Then I looked at the Pro ($300 more than the Air) and the differences between the screens sold me on the Pro. Sort of. What I like about the Air is the inputs; one has to climb up the price ladder in MacBooks or Pros to get what the Air can do. Oh, well. Nothing is perfect.
