I think the video is a bit misleading because I do not believe what the chief engineer states in the beginning that jlr designed their own engines because customers demand lower emissions due to carbon footprint. The truth is that the EU is forcing manufacturers to reduce their emissions to almost zero. Which is pushing the engines to their limit which is just madness.

Do you think more frequent oil changes can extend the life of Ingenium CAM chain or it is stretched anyway due to bad material/high tension?

This has not aged well. Timing chain failures, egr failures, turbocharger problems along with replacements are a nightmare as any warranty requires the removal and cleaning of the sump which itself is a soul destroying job. The result of all this are vehicles which we advise our customers not to buy. The number that we diagnose the faults on , then costed up that then head off to We buy any car is amazing. Customers take the hit just to be rid off. The so called extensive testing of this engine must have been a fantasy.

I have one of these in an evoque and I change oil every 10,000 kms. the oil degrades quickly due to the cleaning of the particulate filter

Considering all things now in 2022 would you consider this engine to be reliable long term. It seems there a few failures of cam chains etc.

Hello, thank you for making such a great video. I have just bought a 2017 2l xf diesel. I've noticed that the engine never really warms up properly. The electronic thermostat dial on the dash hovers around the quarter mark. It rarely goes above this position unless the car is left idling, at such time is goes almost to the half way line but when you drive off it goes back to the quarter mark. I plugged in a scan tool. No codes. The engine coolant temp varies between 65 degrees celcius and 72 degrees celcius. Do you think that the thermostat is faulty, stuck in the open position? I've never had a jaguar before but it's the only car I have driven where the temp never goes to 95 degrees celcius or half way on the dial when warmed up.
I mentioned it to the garage I bought the car from and got a fob off reply " not to worry about it" . I'm nearly convinced that it is either the thermostat or solinoid on the water pump that is faulty. I would appreciate your response. Thank you.

I had that issue and changing the thermostat fixed it. The part itself was around £100 but fitting it... I wish I payed someone to do it for me. It took around 6 hours.

Good thinking on the coolant pump but shame about the chocolate timing chains and tensioners.

Unbelievable that after all these years Land rover can't build a reliable engine. Timing chain failure is a joke on a low mileage, dealer serviced vehicle. And then they just offer 80% if you are lucky. Good bye Evoque!

The petrol engines are the best can't kill them

The problem isn't the reliability, the problem is that they thought they made a reliable engine and gave it a 25k or 2 year service interval. This isn't enough and they issued a statement saying 10k or 12 months. Which is much more within the service intervals of other manufacturers vehicles in its class.

Does the Ingenium 6 (e.g. D300 as fitted to the Defender) have timing chain rattle issues too?

There was a recall on engines stopping and not starting again. It may be worth calling JLR and asking if yours has has the recall done.
