6:28 Im getting this book. Thank you for sharing so much with us,Joey. With what I have learned form your free videos here, I feel confident in starting my own tanks. Yet, I feel compelled to help support your endeavors. I was first going to get a full,pre-made co2 setup. Then I decided to piece it out myself and build a pressurized setup. NOW,I feel confident in giving this a try and scrapping the notion to spend $200+ on a pressurized Co2 system. You have helped me and inspired me a great deal,Sir. With what I plan to do,your videos have already saved me thousands.
I can ALWAYS count on you to have a video that solves my tank problem without costing HUNDREDS of dollars!! THANK YOU JOEY!!
You are the man Joey, thanks for all your videos! You explain things so fast and simply, keep up the good work.
Last comment was 4 years ago.. just goes to show, people are still watching and leaning. Got to try that now😄
True bro
I made it today
Yep I'm here... all confused but I'm here lol!

Joey's my go to fish guy 🙏 good information doesn't expire
Thanks again, Joey! I can basically Google any fish problem and you have a great video on it. Awesome. True king of diy! Thanks! I'm also currently following your aquarium gallery build and it's so exciting it's like watching myself building my dream fish room! Can't wait to see it stocked!
Wow thanks man. 6 years later people are still learning from this video. Sharing knowledge for generations of fish keepers to come 💪
As the last guy was saying, people are still watching. That is the best video about how to build your own co2 generator hands down! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with those of us on a bit of a tight budget to have amazing tanks!! You Rock, and I hope that you have an amazing day!!!✌️♥️🤘
P.S. we have 12 tanks with fish, and plants but 17 total. So, you’re saving a life here🤪
Wow oh wow Fired Up!!! DIY co2 setup. Definitely adding to favs.
Slim Tim Thanks Tim!
Wow this is a great idea. Really smart the way it's mixing by itself. U can use timer and a small selenoid valve that will open up in the night and release co2 outside of aquarium.
Awesome advice, managed to get the whole set up off amazon, I've been struggling with plants for ages, hopefully this will make all the difference!
DanAT0486 Hey sorry it’s been a long time since this comment but if u could find it again and link it i would loooove that
I recently purchased this system before I saw your video and it really is a great and easy product! great review!
It would be helpful if you could link the items you bought for this project! Great video thank you.
Using the names he described, you can find it all on ebay really quickly
I just found all of the exact same items he shows here, in the same places. A little more expensive than 5 years ago, but not much. I hope to have it set up and running tomorrow!
@@amyboyd5760 do you have the link? Thanks
@@amyboyd5760 did it work out

I am doing this TODAY! Got all the parts. Your videos are awesome.
That's the best DIY co2 video I've ever seen great job Joey!!!
MrRvbrown Thanks Randy!
Hey joey i did this method but the citric acid only keeps on going in the baking soda bottle the only way to bring to mix it in the citric acid bottle if i decrease the pressure of co2 flow and if i increase the flow it just flowing in the baking soda bottle not going back and forward just only one direction
thanks!! I just set up my own diy co2 following your directions. Hope my plants stay healthy!!
Yes please Bud! i would love to know what wood is safe in an aquarium please do the vid, and thanks for the vid on rock!! learnt alot
Wow, this is amazing! The best d.i.y co2 setup I have ever seen!
Thanks Joey your videos are very helpful and motivating
great vid just picked up my co2 system got mine on amazon. can you use this with yeast and how would it be set up
Thanks Joey! I tried your older method in the past put the foam got into the airline and polluted my tank...... I'm trying this option this time and hopefully it'll be a success!
Ethan Chua *but*
Looks so simple going to have a go setting this up when I've planted My 75 next week thanks joe still a great Go to Guy.
What an awesome video! So well explained! Thank you bunches!!!
I just wanna say how happy I am this video exists. My fiancè went out and forgot to switch it off and I had no idea how! 😂😂 wouldn't have figured it out without this video!
Very cool, I've never seen those DIY Co2 kits before.
thank you for this video. just ordered my stuff.... cant wait.
So how did it go?
Hey, Joey! How have you been man. Good to see you're doing good. I've been busy with college and etc. Anyway, awesome new video! Great new and improved DIY co2 system, dude. On the older co2 system, I always had a problem with leaks, so this one will definitely help attack that issue. I'm definitely going to see if I can try this soon when I have the time. Thanks!
Busy because of college is a good kind of busy!! Good for you!!
1. I love your vids, you actually inspired me to make my own DIY planted tank from scratch, a few years ago 😊 So a big thank you for that!
2. Approx. how long will it last for 1 refill of acid and base in a 14G tank?
3. What is the name of the track? Its become like a staple for all DIY tutorials.
Seems much easier than the first video. Seriously looking into this. Thanks Joey!
TA Staff The first video was really long and not explained well though, So not a great comparison. Both are about the same in terms of getting running. Pretty simple stuff.
This is Awesome! Thank you Joey!
Thanks Joey, been looking to do this a different way.
You're an absolute beast when it comes to the DIY for fish keeping
REEMIKS Thanks Reemiks
Best set up I have seen so far 👍🏻👍🏻
How can you keep the co2 generation speed ? I have one of those diy co2 system but the air adjustment valve can't hold steady air flow after a period of time.
Hi Joey, thanks for the video it was very helpful. Any uses for the left over liquid when replacing?
thank you for the video. It was really very helpful
Another interesting project joey, keep up the good work!
MIXTURE1001 thanks man i really appreciate it.
great stuff pal! il sub back
Im getting on amazon now! thanks for the video!
thank you..always great info !!
So glad I found this channel!!!
Hi Joey,
Thank you for making this diy! I just set mine up and was wondering if the diffuser location matters. I know you said to keep it at the tank's lowest point but would it also be good to place it under a HOB filter so that the filter pushes the bubbles out?
Excellent video
Great video! Thanks 😊
In conjunction with the previous video you just made my money saving project less stanky.... You are the man thank you! The cheap diy kits on ebay do not include just the pressure gague which is pretty much the major change in this system aside from the chemicals.$19 in usa for that kit...I had to find just the pressure gague and plumbers putty is a flexible alternative to the previous video for added flexibility to the hoses. I'm not sure how plumbers putty lasts over time however but it is aquarium safe imo since its safe for drinking water.. perhaps you would have some insight?
Try 6 now! Just saw this vid and it's helped me a ton!
Wow man I used the old method a year ago didn't wprk that good for me but this looks way better ! Thanks
jefke8345 You might have better luck with this one.
Thanks Joey. Awesome video. I don't know if I missed it but can you please tell me the name of the generator kit and maybe a link?
Hi Joey, I found a very simple solution to help dissolve the CO2, but it's not pretty. I simply placed a cheap 80 gph water internal pump with the suction area right above the diffuser and without any modification, it just shoots the CO2 and water gently into the tank. I guess a circulation pump would work just as well. I'm only doing 1 bubble per 3 seconds, but (I'm only guessing) since it's more efficient, I can use a little less (I use the same DIY CO2 system kit from one of your videos). Sometimes I can observe the bubbles disappearing before reaching the surface. I guess I should buy a drop checker or another tool to measure CO2.
Thanks for the update joey!
darrel stinkmeaner Your welcome!
Thanks for the great video. I just have a question does this system effect my discus in a bad way? Should I use it in discus planted tank or better not?
It would be very helpful if you answer thanks
Wow working well with vinegar thank you! I was sick of my baking powder system. My plants thank you as well!
Thanks for the cool tips.I just have one question.I made one of the mixes with water, suger and yeast 3 days ago, but allready stoppede making co2, and I even made it a little bigger with bigger hotels and mix, for a longer time, so where can I have gone wrong do you think ?
Great video, I wonder how difficult it would be to add a solenoid valve and connect to like one of those WiFi timers or even old school cheapo dial timers. Any thoughts?
Good idea
I've seen this kit but couldn't understand the instructions
You did a great job explaining the system and costs involved
Thanks
Sub'd!
what is the kit called
Hi there, Really helpful set of videos thank you. I purchased the diy co2 system off amazon. I also purchased the electronic solenoid so i can set up a timer with it. One issue i have is that the thumbscrew that comes with the DIY CO2 system is really hit and miss. I'll set it up for a number of bubbles in the bubble counter then ill check it an hour later the number of bubbles will be different. is it that the thumbscrew is broken or do i need some sort of pressure regulator? thanks in advance
Great vid, thanks!
This guy's videos are great.
Brilliant tutorial! waiting for my bits to arrive.... Quick question and sorry if this was already asked... Can you use smaller bottles? or will there be too much pressure?
Do you know if this set up would work for a grow tent and plants? If I run the lines to each plant to supplement CO2 for them to grow?
This is the exact system I am using and I use the same brands for the ingredients. Great minds think alike. Thumbs up from me.
Glen Hawkins The most fun i had was all the testing... trying to blow it up and what not. I will have to confess that me and my kids took some outside and added food colouring to it and made some cool volcanos. haha
I was also looking at ways to make this on a much larger scale, but they were not really worth the hassle.
haha ways to blow it up. At least you cover all the bases. But that is awesome and on larger scale like with culligan 5 gallon water jugs or something ?
Man it is AWESOME!! Thank you very much!!!
This is fucking amazing. I was sitting, pondering ways to make my DiY Co2 setup more effective/convenient last night and you just saved me more toiling and troubling.
Cheers.
The king of DIY Hey i just got done putting this together and I'm curious how long it takes to build up enough c02?
thx for this idea, i will testing it
Amazing job, u read my mind making this vid!:)
Timm Lombardo Thats good then!
For CO2 dispersal I either A. Connect the line directly into a small powerhead that blows the co2 across the tank (with nanos) or B. into a homemade dispersal mixer which is essentially a powerhead attached to a water bottle filled with plastic sponges. The C02 goes into the bottom of the bottle, where it travels throug the water which is being pulled out through the top of the bottle and out through an airhead. This gives the co2 longer to disperce into the water before it is released into the body of the aquarium. I usually hide that behind the plants or hardscape. Now: the night system. I don't bother with the on/off method. I find that causes issues with CO2 imbalances. I use a low powered light (or blue light) to help keep the plants using minimal levels of CO2 without causing algea blooms or stressing the fish. I have the two lights set to timers. I have never had a CO2 die off since I started using the blue lights.
hey I just got one of those also , do I have to shut it down in the night just from the valve or take out all the liquids ??
i made somthing simulair wit gely and sucar dry gist theespoon plantfertilizer and 4 bottle with hoses.
But this is awsome.
It can also be used at crops that live in cabine in home.
thnx for video good work!!
tageted individual wot
This is Best video for this diy method
nice explanation
Great video Joey! can you run this with a solenoid valve on a timer to shut it down at night without the risk of the plastic bottle exploding on you? or any other part of the kit? ive search on ebay and plan to buy one and they are cheap, wich makes me think maybe they are not that strong or well built specially when working with gas at high pressure, any thoughts on this?
You could run the solenoid more frequently on and off so the pressure doesn't get a chance to build up to a significant level that would cause a burst :] 10 minutes on 10 off etc
Cool video :) If you wanted the mix to last longer, could you use a larger can for the first mixture only?
obviously, but remember to keep an eye out for the pressure!
Sorry.... I read lager 🍺
I am going to be building a version of this diffuser this weekend and I had a question. I am not going to be using the tubing and cap kit shown I will be using my own system of tubing and fittings.
My question is, do I need to have a vent hole in the top of the citric acid bottle to allow air to replace the citric acid as it travels over into the other bottle? I am unsure if it will eventually pull a vacuum on the citric acid bottle and keep it from self priming/flowing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Love your channel
I just watched it and it is still useful.🎉
So what about the post reaction that occurs in the bottle b that will develop more pressure slowly
Hi Joey, nice DIY you have here! Just asking if there is a substitute for citric acid we can use? As here in Australia, citric acid at the main supermarkets costs $3 AUD for 75 grams... whilst online wholesale is 1kg for $10 AUD
Mine came with a magnet "rod" attached to the pressure gauge, which I didn't know was a magnet till I read the directions. I think you are suppose to be able to use that to raise the ball on the end of the citric acid side above the water line in order to stop pressure from building too much. I haven't got to that point yet but seems like it would work. Raise the ball w the magnet, lower the pressure a bit then put it back in.
I like the yeast version so much more, no chance of overpressure, less things to go wrong
Is it possible to link more than one of these systems together in parallel to make it last longer. I have mine on a ph controller and solenoid and it only lasts a few days.
actually to get the most out of your citric acid and baking soda, use 1 part of citric acid with 3 parts of baking soda. The balanced reaction is this: C6H8O7 (citric acid) + 3NaHCO3 (Baking soda) = Na3C6H5O7 + 3H20 + 3CO2. With this you would have no residue left on both sides. I use 60 gram citric acid and 185 grams of baking soda ( 5 grams more to make sure all the citric acid has reacted)
Joris Van Den Bosch in an acid base reaction such as this all the atoms of carbon and hydrogen in the citric acid do not become water and co2. In this reaction 3 hydrogen ions from citric acid is reduced by 3 bicarbonate ions to produce the water and co2. The ratios of each reactant are still 3 moles sodium bicarbonate to 1 mole citric acid but the molecular weights of these compounds differ so by weight the ratio is 2.2 grams citric acid to 1.8 grams sodium bicarbonate to produce 1 gram co2.
The only videos for this I could find were all in Chinese with English subtitles and it was very confusing. Your video helped me get it perfect. Thanks dude.
I am doing this project!!
Hey Joey, i’m a big fan & learned about you from your “biggest fan” contest winner, Chris Gustaves. After running the system for a few months, did you have any issues with adjusting the amount of CO2? After a couple of months I found that the adjustable Airline valve no longer functions very well in terms of stopping the flow of CO2. I was wondering if you discovered any possible solutions or fixes to this problem?
just set this system up today. worked exactly as shown. hoping for excellent results. also diggin this setup not using yeast. had enough yeast related contamination and stink to last a lifetime.
michael minner .
You might consider a magnetic valve between the bubble counter and the diffusor and plug it in on the timer of the light of the aquarium to cut down co2 when lighting shuts down..
Is there a way to extend the life of the mix ? I only get about one week .
Reduce the bubbles per second. These setups aren't designed to last for weeks on end in a realistic scenario. But still really useful and cost-effective! Just refill more often.
Hey, Joey do you think you could make a new DIY CO2 video with this set up but also using a In Line Solenoid Or Solenoid Valve on a timer? or whatever it's called? I'm trying figure out if there is something like that that could be used on a timer???
Can you give me a list what material did you use?
Real good and ideas
Thanks for the vid. It looks like its a very good method for DIY co2 aquarium. I am going to make a DIY co2 system first time. Would you tell me whats the name of every parts you are using from your video, please? I am a newbie and I have no idea what are they and how to find them from ebay. Thanks.
hi, need your help, in between all these components where to fix solenoid ideally ?
I just got this stuff, planning to use sugar and yeast. I dont have a bubble counter with it. If the gauge is green means its running well and just leave it as it is?
Hello! Quick question: When you say 'get a cheap air pump to run at night, on a timer...to diffuse the CO2' - what exactly to you mean? Like an additional bubbler? thanks!
Hi joey...I have a question hope u can help me ...can the citric acid be change to distrilled vineger? ...from where im from citric acid is dificult to find ...pls help. tq
Is it possible to get a longer hose running from the bottles to the aquarium? And what liquid is inside the bubble counter and diffuser? Just water?
THKS!
will using an air pump and air stone work to any extent? i know a lot of air is composed of co2 so even if 60% is not co2, there is still a high percentage which is. so is using an air pump doing anything beneficial to the plants? (micro bubble can be seen in the entirety of the tank )
Anyone looking for how to decrease the Pressure ....First, close the needle valve, detach the ceramic diffuser, now lift the tube in the citric bottle with the help of the magnet provided (if not, just turn the bottle A sideway to get the tube's end out of the solution), & now in this position, open the needle valve & as Stephen Wolff likes to put it, increase the Global Warming. ; )
Caution- try to do this in well ventilated or open area as if you get sudden blast of CO2 in your breathing system...you might feel nauseous & it can harm you in more ways than that. Play it safe.
hi. i have a question. if the bottle is leaking and throughout the night the chain reaction used up all the product to make co2. Can it be danger while i'm still asleep and breathing the co2?
what a great video
