When I was raising my children, I would stretch a pound of ground beef with a cup or more of oatmeal to make a meatloaf. A dash or two of soy sauce made it taste more savory too.
A dozen eggs is a treasure for those who can eat them, it can be the basis of twelve or more meals.
A boiled egg or two, a couple of boiled potatoes, some celery/ onion/ peas, mayo or whatever dressing - a complete meal potato salad.
If you make a cooked pudding mix, whisk an egg into the cold milk first. If you have graham crackers, crumble some into the bottom of your pudding bowl. You’ll have a more nutritious and satisfying dessert.
Quiche seems like a complicated thing to make, but it’s basically a pie crust, savory custard (eggs and milk), and whatever else you have to put in it - bits of cheese, vegetables, meat. It can be a cheap and wonderful meal.
Many recipes from depression era cookbooks use pie crusts made with flour and lard or tallow. Think pot pies and wrapped meals. Now is a good time to learn from others and be creative.
Thank you so much for this conversation, AG! 🙏❤️

Cornbread stuffing with a can of chili on top. Chicken stuffing with a can of cream of chicken soup, can of chicken, and a can of vegetables mixed together, Makes a lot. Walmart brand makes it all cheap. I'm on SS now, so I get creative. Pancakes for hot dog buns or bread.

A quick, easy, inexpensive dish that I like is a can of chicken, a packet of taco seasoning, a cup of water ( if using fresh chicken, brown until almost done, then add seasoning and water). Add a can of black beans, drained and rinsed, a can of corn, drained, and a can of Rotel (or diced tomatoes). Mix together and bring to a simmer for 15 minutes or until chicken is completely cooked.
If you have rice, serve with it. This is also good rolled up in a tortilla.
A good "rotate your pantry" meal, too.
I think I will fix this tonight for supper. 😊

Good ideas! Buy chicken leg quarters (leg and thigh) in a 5lb bag and you can find them cheap at 60¢ or less per lb and 6-8 quarters per bag. Separate the leg from the thigh and thats a lot of servings for a small cost. I usually buy thighs bone in skin on when they are $1 or less and buy a two pound pkg. One thigh at half a pound is enough to make two quarts of chicken noodle/rice soup so four half pound thigh gets me thru a month and a pot of soup has four two cup servings. I buy celery and carrots on sale and either chop and freeze them or dehydrate them so i always have soup vegetables on hand. Cabbage is easy to dehydrate so i keep plenty dehydrated also to add to casseroles and soups. A pot of soup only costs me about $1 to make and i get four hearty meals from it.

Hi granny. Its a sad state of affairs when things like food have become so expensive that you can't afford to eat anymore. It used to be that if you had a good job that you could afford to eat well and live well. Now even a two income family can barely afford their homes and food. The rich keep getting richer while the poor starve to death. Somethings got to give.i have a couple of poor homeless people that I help and things are getting so expensive that I have a hard time being able to help them at all. Sad ,sad sad

People also have so many new expenses, like cell phones, internet, cable tv, drive through dining, amazon impulse buying, and other crazy things that have become "needs" that didn't exist before. Food is still about 12% of the average American family budget. Something else needs to be cut by many to afford the food they need.

If you are a Veteran, there are Veteran specific pantries. Call either a food bank..of your VA center, the VSO should have the information. Ours is twice a month, and seriously, if it were once a month we would make do. There is NO shame in going to a food pantry. My husbands VA disability just covers the bills (and we are debt free, but homeowners insurance is almost as much as a typical rent now) . We volunteer at the regular one every other week and get the same amount as everyone going...Even if there are items you dont like or wont use, donate it to neighbors, there is always someone in need, or even not really needy, but would love the stuff you dont want. Our favorite cheap meal is tuna casserole, and we ate it even when times were good. Instant mashed potatoes with a can of beef stew over it is belly filling.

I still think the Dollar Tree is the best choice for most of us.
I know this is not for everyone, but dumpster diving is sometimes an answer to a prayer.
I frequently stop under those mulberry trees that grow along the roadside. I get fresh fruit that way - and yes,I always leave enough for the deer. 💗

Gidday Alaska Granny. Not really a meal idea but a cost saving measure.
If you like the instant microwave oats but you realise they are over priced, get a small coffee grinder (I bought mine for $10), then buy the store brand oats. You can cut them to size in seconds in batches.
Store them in a jar or container along with the measurements and cooking time. I use 1/3 cup oats, 2/3 cup water or milk and nuke them for 90 seconds. Personally, I like to add cinnamon and sultanas (raisins) before cooking, then add some peanut butter and maple syrup or honey after they are cooked. Very delicious and filling and much cheaper than the ready serve sachets.

Went into a large super market yesterday for the first time in quite awhile. Due to a family medical emergency I’ve been using pantry foods and doing small home deliveries or running to ALDIs to restock and buying meats from a small local butcher. I was floored by the costs of EVERY item I checked and angered by the obvious shrinkage of products. Not to mention the product varieties are very limited. Needless to say I got only what we absolutely needed and got outta there. So glad I’ve had my prep pantry to sustain us through our situation up to now, but can’t afford to fully restock it. This worries me. 😞 (Glad we’re starting to harvest food from our small garden.)

here in Iowa schools offer free breakfasts and lunches to students not only during the school year but during the summer. some organizations here in my city offer free meals to people in need. I volunteer at my mosque, where I occasionally bring home leftovers from community meals. we also get food brought in by peeople who think they are supplyng the mosque but most of the time the food is neither the rigyt type or size/quantity so I am allowed to bring that home. sometimes people leave unwanted gfood in the laundry room so I rescue that. I have also recieved food as gifts from others. I recently brought home some leftovers from our family trip to the lake, some hot dog buns, sweet corn which is in the freezer and turkey sandwich meat. I was not able to plant this spriing because of the crap that happened to my apartment and had stuff stored out on my deckwhile the living 4room got dried out and repaired but I still added to my compost. a quick meal idea I did a video on a few years ago was a version o chicken biriyani made with instant rice, canned chicken, canned chickpeas and garammasala spice blend, a pinch of curry and saltand pepper

Does anyone have advice for me regarding cooking dry lentils? I wash them well before cooking, but eating them still gives me stomach issues.

    • @dandycat2204
      @dandycat2204 Місяць тому +1

How long have you been eating them??
If it's fairly recent then it may just be that your gut needs some time to acclimate to them.
You may be intolerant of them, but you won't know for sure without a test.
Lentils don't really need soaking, but I find cooking them "low and slow" for best results

@@dandycat2204 thank you. I've been eating them in canned soups for years with no problems, but when I try to cook them myself from a bag, my system can't tolerate them. I will try cooking them low and slow and see if that helps. Thanks again.

      Your welcome.
Perhaps that's something you could try as well...make homemade soup and put the lentils in that.
If that works for you, it may just be a case of more liquid when cooking.
Anyway, good luck to you with it, hope it sorts itself out.

I have High FODMAP issues. And other sensitivities. Sometimes our bodies change. It may be too concentrated to eat them fresh cooked without them being dispersed throughout a recipe. Hope you find the answer! 🇺🇸

AG, in our house when our kids were growing up we had Potpourri Night. We still do that! All the little leftovers, maybe some rice, a couple of chicken wings, some picadillo (a Cuban hamburger dish) that you used for empanadas, fried up spaghetti. It was all different stuff in smaller portions, nothing wasted, and it filled you ❤

Older adults eat a lot less than younger adults. Im older, I know. She'll be fine. There are still affordable foods, canned goods, beans, rice. Local churches, Senior Centers, Food banks.... There's still time to prepare. Nearly everyone has access to food benefits. There shouldn't be excuses.

At the start of the Pandemic it was my husband, me & oldest son. Then, my husband succumbed to Parkinson's & Dementia passing away in 12/2020 in homecare because of the Pandemic. This cut my income to $15K/annually.
Next, Chapter was adjusting to the lower income, my medical issues, food prices increasing and my big mistake thinking the Medicare Advange Plans would help balance the lose of income.
😂 The Medicare Advantage Plans are to save Medicare money by paying less to Doctors plus the patient having a copay expenses for services that use to be covered.
Then, came the credit card debacle, interest rates going from 10% to 23%-29%. Unfortunately, I needed the medical treatment and changing doctors would have meant 8-10 weeks without treatment. Needless to say the interest has put me in debt over my head, it has been 18 months since the shoulder dislocation, I'm still in Physical Therapy and the doctor won't give me permission to work. Even if I could work, there is no one hiring a disabled 65+ person.
My sons help me, but since 45th left office their Bonus Checks are $0 even though they meet their Goals, the $1K dividend per month on stocks have gone the way of the Dodo Bird.
Been trying to work with a Debt Management group, their advice is Free, but they require a Escrow Acct. set-up Fee plus a $10/acct. Fee. The backside is they will get you a lower interest rate but you pay a Fee & the Credit Card company pays them a Free (15%).
I wonder how much kickback the Obama Credit Relief😅😮 program creators had to dish out to Government Elected & Non-elected employees.

Another good video and one done with a lot of thought and sensitivity to the many who are having hard times making ends meet. We have an issue here with the food banks not being able to keep up. The people arriving over the border are being referred to going to food banks for 'free' groceries when they may be also getting gift cards and meals delivered to them so this puts another big strain on keeping up to help those in need. Checking all of the options like you said the bakery outlets is good and use any coupons that are available as well. I load in digital coupons for our grocery store, their sale items are valid only if you use their loyalty card that have those weekly coupons loaded in. We have gone to neighbors with fruit trees and asked if we could get some of their fruit, many times they just don't want to bother to pick it themselves and it goes to waste so we give them some and take the rest, eat it fresh and can it as well.

    Another bullseye Grannny ❤
    So many great ideas.
My mom raised us on pintos and rice, her goulash was any kind of noodles with tomato sauce.
As a kid I always wished for fun food I saw in tv commercials, you know like, Frosted flakes were supposedly GREAT!.
I’m not sure what gas cost back then but when we could get to Malibu we’d fish off the pier and have bass or sand dabs, or perch dinners.
My mom would cook some and freeze the rest .
So we could have fish a special days .
…fishing was better than wishing and G-D always helped us catch dinner.
I pray we can all stay stocked up, because we know the Bible says it’s going to keep getting more expensive, so expensive it’ll take a days wage for a loaf of bread Revelation 6:9.
We need to practice our penny pinching skills now as best we can so we can be masters at it. 👍🏻
