I am thinking about my Dad as I listen to this. He is now sadly terminally ill, but used to play this all the time on our piano when I was growing up
god bless you and your family! your father is a great man!
My dad passed on in 1994 and this was the song he played all the time before meeting his Maker.
Imagine Bach playing this melody at Heaven, forever and ever.
Glorious.
He does....
It would get quite boring by like the fifth time
Well he's probably capable of much more amazing music in heaven!
How you gonna play or hear anything without a body? 🤨
He must be playing cause Bach owns heaven, lets face it he is god
That moment when you reject instrumentaility and realize that life is worth living even through all the hardships and sorrow.
Omedetou!
That's what makes it worth living. When you use cheat codes in a video game, it's gets boring very quickly.
Ikari kun....
Ayanami...
Wow I needed to hear that may I ask what prompted you to type that out here?
@@xboxer808 Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring was used in The End Of Evangelion (Anime Movie, 1997).
He's talking about a context within the movie. If you want to watch it, you might start with Neon Genesis Evangelion (Anime Series, 1996).
after 4 years I guess, I finally found the title of this piece so overwhelmed right now!!! I'm so happy right now I can listen to this over and over again
Anna '96 same
Same here!
You're fortunate to have found it at four. Try ten years and you'll find out how insane you can go.
Same I used Shanzam
I heard it first in the 90s from Young Indiana Jones series in the congo episode and now I'm here.
The only thing bad about this song is that it ends.
Well said

The way your hands softly move over the keyboard is amazing.
It inspires me in life, how firstly, from what I understand from some youtube comment which I sadly cannot find anymore, Myra kept playing during the bombing of London, and so helped keep the citizens' spirit up, wonderful thing. And how because of this, a soldier may be found, perhaps unknowingly, whistling a hymn to the glory of Jesus Christ.
And when I had newly come to faith, I found this song the closest match to describing the ever upwards flowing peace and joy of God's Holy Spirit's presence. Of course no music ever can really describe it, just like there are no words that can describe it. There are also no words to properly describe the horror of being about to die in one's sins. Which is why, I guess, so many people don't care about the suffering around us, because they haven't experienced intense pain themselves?
--------------------------------------------------------------
During the Second World War when, with all concert halls blacked out at night to avoid being targeted by German bombers, Myra Hess organised what would turn out to be almost 2,000 lunchtime concerts spanning a period of six years, starting during The Blitz bombing of London. The concerts were held at the National Gallery, in Trafalgar Square. Hess began her lunchtime concerts a few weeks after the start of the war. They were presented on Monday to Friday, for six-and-a-half years without fail. If London was being bombed, the concert was moved to a smaller, safer room. Every artist was paid five guineas, no matter who they were. - Wikipedia.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Myra Hess's (1890-1965) perofrmance of her very famous arrangement of Bach's Chorale "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring".
Her favourite anecdote relating to "Jesu, Joy" concerned a British soldier who whistled it on a train during the war.
"Are you interested in Bach?", the soldier was asked by a journalist.
"No", he answered.
"But you are whistling a Bach composition", the newsman insisted.
"That's no Bach", he replied indignantly. "That's Myra Hess."
(From Marian McKenna's "Myra Hess -- A Portrait")
Amen! This is exactly why I always start this piece first in practicing piano before all other music as a declaration to Jesus that all my piano playing/ practicing/music is for His glory alone as He is the Chief Musician!🙏✝️
Noone can meld joy, hope and pain into one sweet, almost heavenly expression like Bach. To me, he is the pinnacle of western classical music.
Pinnacle of music period.
I sat with my family on the stage during Dame Myra Hess's farewell concert in New York
decades ago: the theatre was completely sold out so they sold tickets for some long-time subscribers to sit on the stage! She played this - of course - her signature piece. Paul Barton here does a superb job with this beautiful music!
A spiritually wonderful piece by Bach that almost makes me want to become religious, a beautiful arrangement by Myra Hess, and a amazing performance by Mr. Barton.
Maybe its a sign. :)
Yeah, maybe it‘s a sign :)
Every time I listen to this piece I get emotional... Beautiful.
I like the way it's mostly a 1 to 3 ratio in terms of bass and melody. Makes it sound like effortless movement. Like a group of angels made it for the sheer joy of it.
In 1954 I bought my first record player together with a record (78 rev.). It was Jesu Joy of Man's Desire, played by Myra Hess. It made such an impression on me that each time I hear this, the same emotions of the first time are again there. Wonderful, with the high notes flying like butterflies around the theme.
What a beautiful description. :)
You might like hearing pianist Alon Goldstein's interpretation. It's my favorite.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful history with the world
@@adelasussman3838 You should also give a listen to Dinu Lipatti's version than again it is Bach so it's all sublime.
@@tomkelly4336 Thank you for your suggestion! I did listen to Dinu Lipatti's version and it is played with great expressiveness!! I do like the slower version of this piece!
I listen to this almost every night to quiet my spirit so I can sleep. Thank you.
I never get tired of hearing this song it’s so glorious - I never get tired of playing it too
This was played at my aunt’s wedding last summer. I didn’t know it was Bach at the time, but I definitely found it beautiful and now I mainly relate this music to sadness and beauty
Holy shit its Ed Dwight
Can't put to words the emotions... Joy ecstasy .. bliss.. melancholy.. all together and all of it at once
Just so peaceful. My favorite piece to play on the piano.
P. Barton you are a true piano teacher. I thank the Lord that I met you !
This is so sweet. Words can't describe it. It is heavenly...
Thanks Paul!!
You just did
You made me miss my dad. Thanks for sharing! Nice playing, didn't just play the notes but got the emotion in there as well! My dad played like you as well. Nice memories.
The best pianist playing the best music...
The Adventures of Ed Dwight.
My all time favorite classical piano music. I've played it on piano since I was a teenager. 🥰
BEAUTIFUL interpretation! Fabulous phrasing! Superb attention to melody v harmony! Splendid sense of time. Clear articulation. EXCELLENT!
It's really awesome you can hear how baroque era music expresses beauty, since they couldn't use dynamics they had to be very creative and that's very unique to baroque
I want this played for my wedding!
The sheer joy of loving what you are doing and the melody portrays this so well.
The most beautiful thing I've ever heard! STUNNING!
Not easy, but soo beautiful.
This music gives me peace.
Splendid performance!
It's not that hard wym
@@AK47_414 I'm 47 and have been playing piano for 4 months (one hour a day, starting from scratch...).
My teacher gave me a simpler version ( in the key of C) of this song, which I'm trying to learn.
Someday I'll be able to play even the version of the video, but for now, I'd be happy if I could play the easier one.
Maybe I'm not very gifted, but I don't care: I play as a hobby and know I'll never become very good at it, as I practice in the evenings, after a whole day of work etc...
@@marcodonati572 Hi. I hope you’ve continued practicing the piano. I was about your age when i decided to tackle the violin, and it’s been the most gratifying life endeavor. I encourage you to stick with it, you’ll be glad you did. Blessings.
@@BA-ue8lh thank you for your encouragement.
I had to stop for almost one year due to various problem, but now I restarted practising.
It's sooo difficult, but also rewarding when you manage to play something.
I hope I will be able to continue practising until I live.
It's my favorite piece from among all the works of J.S. Bach. It's so inspiring and it touches my heart every time I hear it. This particular arrangement even brought tears to my eyes.
I played a simple version of this song when I was young and I love it because to me it reminds me of what my childhood was like in one song.

Wonderful rendition! Thanks for posting
So beautiful and moving.
Bravo!!! So beautiful!
Wonderful!!!!!!! So sweet and gentle!
Paul, Thank you so much for sharing your gifts with all of us, your interpretation belongs in the company of Gould and Schiff, and of course Tureck. I find when you are able to hear well-played Bach it is transcendent and opens up being one with our Lord.
Essa música me lembra a nixonverse mas a melodia é simplesmente bela e calma, uma otima música

Such a beast of an arrangement, well done for even attempting it let alone posting it.
Lovely piece and equally lovely playing.

Wonderful arrangement and execution. Congratulations!
Excellent job! Thanks for sharing.
It is absolutely a wonderful performance
Love it !❤
Thank you so much for playing this song. You always play so beautifully I wish I can someday be like you.
This is perfection.
Thank you very much for both your tutorial video and this beautiful performance! This piece made me start playing the piano again. It took me quite some months to be able to "play" this transcription. If it wasn't for your help it would have taken me much longer. Thanks again!
Wonderful performance!
The Knight's world is gone...
RIP deanverse
And when you have no world left, then what course is there is to follow? The Knight is only one here in our existence who has true free will, only he has the ability to change people's lives. Determinism states that the American men sailing toward Omaha Beach were meant to die that day, but the Knight arrived in shining armor and rerouted those lives. The Knight could've acted selfishly, watched as we lived out our lives, but he chose not to. With the Knight, death is no longer a deterministic guarantee. At any time, at any place, the Knight can save us.

Dude, solid performance. Seriously.

I am sorry how a person who plays the piano is a pianist not a pianoest. No big deal but I thought I would let you know
I love this piece so much!! Btw you are playing it so lightly it looks like you aren’t playing it at all wow💕

very well played, thanks.
It's beautiful beyond words, Paul. It makes me want to practice piano again after good ten years or so. (Not that I ever was very good at it.) Thank You!
Of course this is Bach. It's so beautiful.
I love this piece but it doesn't sound very baroque to me! It sounds quite contemporary, but maybe that speaks to the timelessness and genius of Bach.
Wonderful.....you play with wonderful, phrasing, like breathing and meditation.....I can play this piece, but need to practice presentation more. It’s hard to think of how others “hear your playing”.....thank you....senior in 🇨🇦
