- PRO GUITARIST REACTS; NUNO & EXTREME (RISE) REACTION
I'm a former LA live session guitarist...recording artist and music teacher.
So cool to see Nuno Bettencourt rocking with some new sounds..
#extreme #rise #nunobettencourt
All I have to say is that if this is Nuno's tribute to Eddie - Eddie is looking down with one big damn smile on his face!!!!! Nuno is 56 years young and still kicking ass - period.
Indeed
Hi from Portugal! Nuno is a portuguese hero!
He’s Portuguese? I didn’t know. Cool. And yes you’re right!!
@@michaelgoyettemusic yes he is. He was born in the portuguese islands of Azores. His brother Luís was a musical producer in Portugal. Nuno has received a condecoration from the Portuguese government
You know it's a great solo when it makes even an accomplished pro guitarist go full Keanu.... "Whoa." Awesome reaction!
Lmao…….exactly!!!!
Nuno was like it's been awhile, here are five guitar solos in one song.
Yeah pretty much!! Hahaha
Best comment ever!!!!
That solo is a breath of fresh air, wow!!🎸😶😶🤘🤘 Best thing I've heard in over a decade! ❤️🔥
Yeah it’s intense…..I was expecting all 80s riffs but it sounds modern.
absofecknlutely
I am so glad they are back. Such an underrated band.
It’s been a minute!
Rick Beato said that no other than Steve Lukather messaged him to say "have you heard the Nuno solo?"
Not totally surprising!!!
Luke!!!!!!!
I believe he said Phil X messaged him.......Phil is a monster as well so if he's jazzed you know it's good!
@@davesandberg Yes Rick got a lot of calls about this solo. It's one of the reasons it went viral. Once Rick talked about it everyone went to watch the video and download the album.
I know this video is mostly about Nuno and Gary. But don't sleep on Pat and Figg! Pat is a MONSTER on bass.
Fair enough. ;)
Nuno is such a badass. He's not nearly talked about enough as one of the greats. I'm glad he's finally getting the love he deserves. Great song and Extreme is awesome. Rock is not dead, folks.
All true. ❤️
Nuno's been doing stuff like this for nearly 40yrs, listen to the first 2 Extreme Albums and there's some Amazing guitar work even that early in his Career that sounded unique to Nuno, and his technique has always been on a level with all the greats, yet he only seems to be recognised by fellow guitar players as one of the best Musicians ever on the instrument, Nuno will always be in my Top 3 guitar players ever and don't ask me to name the other 2 because i keep changing my mind, but i never change my mind about Nuno.
Long live the king!! :)
I agree. I have a top 5 where the 1st four are Vai, Satriani, Petrucci and Nuno. #5 depends on what day of the week it is.
Yep. He's been overlooked for decades. If you ask guitarists they'll tell you Nuno is one of the all time greats, plus he's a humble guy. People are finally noticing.
80s hair rock is the best. Glad to see they are still rockin and nuno is still shredding
Indeed!!
Theres good...and then theres Nuno! He hits it out of the park! Two unique styles...Satch and Nuno. Long live guitar solos!
“Rock on and prosper”seems like the right thing to say. :).
Rise is a song birthed when Stone Temple Pilots (Silvergun Superman) and Blue October (Daylight) had a baby that was delivered by Eddie Van Halen. Nuno is simply amazing - that tremolo picking is demonic.
Good analogy!!!
The tremolo picking is the only part I can do at tempo!! 😂 that 2nd part is stupid cool.
Nuno raising the bar since 1989!
Truth
So Nuno did a few tributes in that solo and his rhythm playing. That ending little riff was Dimebag. During the solo his bends and tremolo was Eddie all the way including playing rock on drop D. If you look at his guitar, the Floyd Rose even has Eddie's D-tuna on it.I believe there was a little Brian May in there also. Notice Gary had the tribute to Freddie Mercury with the microphone stand with no legs. I bet this album will be like a love letter to those musicians past.
Well said……I didn’t know dimebag that well but I agree with the other references. Cheers bro.
I bet you’re right.
Yep. Extreme has always put their influences in their songs while managing to make their songs their own. They're one of the best to ever do it.
Loved your genuine surprise "whoa!" reaction! As a drummer, Nuno's rhythm-first percussive patterns approach makes me smile!
Thanks bud. Glad you enjoyed it. Nuno is a monster!! :).
6:30 "it's a song in itself....ok, we're doing this solo twice" Hell yeah!
It’s definitely the selling feature!! :)
Great video, Michael! Really enjoyed your reaction. I am a 60 year old guitarist in PA and been listening to Nuno since their first release almost 35 years ago. Wow I’m old!! This solo is mind blowing. I appreciate your appreciation being a pro and all. I have always felt Nuno didn’t get all the recognition he deserves. Looking forward to more of your Nuno reaction videos!
Rock on!
I do not play guitar, I fronted a cover band many years ago and all I can say is thank god in heaven and I pray we get more like this...
It’s refreshing.
Y?
It's just a poem. I have better
@@michaelgoyettemusic I want to assist u
Gary n Nuno complementing each other. Great
It’s a clever way to segue into the solo.
EVH loved Nuno so much he used to play parts of the He-Man Woman Hater solo during soundcheck with VH.
He had no love for Gary Charone though….I was friends with EVH for a few months….he turned red talking about Gary….they fired their manager for being the one to set that collaboration up.
I don't think Rihanna would have approved of that solo during the Super Bowl half time show. But I would have. Nuno has kicked the bar way up with this new song. F'in A!
I think it would have perked a few ears though!!
Awesome tune, great vocal and the way Nuno starts the solo just drifting in and out of time is what really woke me up
The tremolo picking……it’s a nod to EVH…..I noticed a lot of things since the first listen.
Remember seeing EXTREME on their (3 Sides to Every Story) tour and a mate of mine who was a guitarist came with me. As we walked out I said to him " Bet your gonna go home and practice your guitar now". He responded " What!! Im gonna go home and throw it out the window". LOLOL!!
It’s one or the other!! Lol
Nuno revitalizing solo shredding 👍
I watched an interview with Nuno and Herman Li. Nuno loves the Rihanna gig. He said the live show is not what you think. He described the gig as challenging. I couldn't believe anything would be a challenge to him at this point. Great interview BTW -- check it out. I am so curious about the rest of the album which I believe comes out June 9.
I like Herman li…..he seems like a nice dude when I watch him on twitch.
If I would see those legs in real, I would became her guitarist as well.
New album? More Nuno? Yes please, just went from six to noon!
Nuno for prez!!!!!
Shades of Stone Temple Pilots... Silvergun Superman. That being said, it's a damn fine solo!
That was the first thing I heard when I listened to it.
ua-cam.com/video/bmVZDopspPU/v-deo.html
We wouldn’t all be talking about the song if not for the solo if we’re being real……thanks for the comment!
Nuno has stated that he is to carry Eddie Van Halen’s guitar fire. 🔥 and he does.
Yeah I’ve heard. He’s doing good so far!!!!
I wish I recorded my own first reaction to this song. I rember I couldn't help grinding ear to ear. I was very tense and excited. Very very cool. Thanks for making staring yours.
I knew it was gonna be good but I didn’t expect something I never heard before!! Ya know?
What separates bands like Extreme, Metallica and Van Halen from the rest - aside from the pure musicianship and ability of every member of the group - is the attention to detail in every aspect of both the song itself and the production. The drums, bass, lead guitar, keys and singing are all impeccable, and how they blend together in the arrangement is first class.
Like Van Halen were with Eddie, Extreme are also blessed with one of the most talented virtuoso musicians and songwriters on the planet in Nuno Bettencourt. Some of the music he has written - particularly on III Sides - is breathtakingly beautiful, and his guitar playing on both acoustic and electric is unparalleled.
I cannot wait for the new album.
💯
Volcanic Shredding even stuns and astounds pro shredders...
I don’t consider myself a shredder anymore but I used to. Nuno makes me wish I’d stayed in the shred game!!
@@michaelgoyettemusic Same here, friend. Same here. See that made me both want to get back to some level of shred and also burn all my guitars simultaneously. If that's possible. Great review of the solo. Nuno surely rocked the music world with this!
Great uploa-oo-woh-ooh-oh-wo-ad, accurate insightful stuff. Nuff respect
Hahahaha. Clever AF!!!
That wide-eyed open mouth “woah” at 6:25 made me LOL, the genuine astonishment is awesome. I literally had the same reaction.
I hope the whole album kicks like that! Hope the Taylor Swifts of the world take notice.
1000%
I smiled at the solo too. 😀
I think nowadays the portuguese Nuno Bettencourt is the best guitar player in the world.
He is amazing...I'm a fã.
He’s definitely in the conversation. Cheers.
The YT/Internet challenge is on to find the first guitarist that can play Nuno's stunning solo here.
[Edit 2 seconds later] - lol, that was fast!
Hahahaha. Yeah it doesn’t take long!! I won’t be making one! Lol
Been hearing a lot about this song online and getting numerous texts about how mind-blowing the lead is etc...and it is. But if you'd listen to their Saudades to rock album, Nuno's Mourning Widows and Drama Gods albums this isn't as much of a suprise as it is expected at this point. Everyone's acting like the guys been living under a rock since 1996
I think he’s been under the radar for longer than that….I know I haven’t been keeping up with him since way back in the day. But I suppose some people like yourself saw it in previous years….I’m definitely curious now. Thanks
Nuno has been playing like this since the first album. "Play With Me" is siiiiiiiiick! As is "He-man Woman Hater" from the second album.
I went from being on the fence about this song to thinking it may garner a Grammy nomination, considering all the buzz it is getting.
It's great to see Nuno get out there and be the completely unapologetic gunslinger and guitar hero.
I don’t think it’ll win a Grammy…the mix is a little off which I didn’t notice on first listen……but I’ve been wrong before!! ;) cheers.
@@michaelgoyettemusic that is why I said "nomination". :) Also, if I understand the calendar, the cycle just opened for 2024, so this could peak and fade too early, as well.
Still, the more I listen, it is a very strong song with a great hook. And Nuno doing Nuno things is the cherry on top.
Nuno is a beast! 🤘😎🤘
Yep
I saw Extreme about 30y ago...and again last month. It was FLAWLESS! Probably one of the best shows I've ever seen. Gary sang and moved like someone half his age... 🤘🎤🤘
That’s so good to hear. I’m glad they still rock!!
You at 8:00…I KNOW RIGHT?
Blew my mind!
Didn’t think I’d hear stuff like this anymore since Eddie’s passing.
Craziness!! Haha
Finely!! You’re the first that understands the lyrics on the chorus. Up Up Up!
Hahaha……seriously? What do others think they’re saying?
@@michaelgoyettemusic in each comment I read, everyone think that they sing “uo, uo oh oh”…
I’m Italian, but it’s obvious what they sing! My gosh! I’m desperate 😅
That is... dope
I assume you mean the end of the solo? ;)
His tone is amazing!
nuno es de otro mundo ⚡⚡🤘🤘
Si!!!!
Long time... Thought rock n roll was dead... But... Here they are again!! Killers!!
Bettencourt has done a few interviews where Rihanna came up and I think you're impression is mistaken...he loves the gig for the musicality and the theater etc. He also said she's far more understanding of music than people give her credit for. When he talks about the audition/meeting/introductions it's clear he has legit respect for her. Definitely about more than it paying well.
That’s awesome! I’m glad.
@@michaelgoyettemusic Indeed. ua-cam.com/video/WZTVB-lP_Gk/v-deo.html
Wow. That is impressive to say the least. Haven’t heard anything solo-wise that hit that hard in years. The song itself is good… but that solo… Dayumm.
It’s definitely the highlight
Just wow, man. Nuno.
Well said!!! :)
Someone's been listening to Tiny Music, Stone Temple Pilots
Lounge fly... ha ha
& the Yodeling ,, well that's just FUN !!
BUT... that Guitar Solo is .....like WATER in a Rock & Roll drought.
Well put my Rock’n’Roll friend!!!
you can see happines slowly appearing on his face when nuno start to play solo 😄
Hahahahaha. Yep!!!
@@michaelgoyettemusic same for me 😆
Nuno is back!
You’re almost at 1k subscribers. 😁🎶
I’m over now!! Thank you!!
It's a strange variation on Al Di Meola pakm muting and an octave pedal. I've never heard that and it was flawless.
Such a strange sound….
@@michaelgoyettemusic I've been a Tonechaser all of my life. I can palm mute. I'm definitely not that fast. I know there is more to thhe effects used but I would have never thought of that although having some studio knowledge I can pick a part a little of what is going on. Hw sefintely pulled a new variation I've never heard before.
@@michaelgoyettemusic Makes me think of Yngwie's arpeggios.
@@robertscharlow I thought more of Bach fugues.
@@bradhardisty1652 Yes! Totally that. 'The Well-Tempered Washburn." 🤣
Nuno, and the whole band, are ON FIRE!!!
Agreed
I love Nuno🤩
That is correct!!! Lol
Great video!
It’s full on.
So happy Nuno is finally getting recognised!! I am not surprised by this solo at all, he has been doing this kinda stuff sine their first album. He has been my guitar hero for as long as I can remember. One of the GOATs for sure!!. The rhythm, speed and melody is just second to none. I could make an amazing greatest solos of al time list with just his solos and people wont disagree!
He’s never done anything else like this section….no one has.
@@michaelgoyettemusic I agree that this is something he invented and is very much to his style (no doubt taking influence from Eddie and Brian) but he has done something very similar in the past, at least it is the same technique 3 notes per string, hammer on, pull-off, palm muting with amazing timing and percussive skills. it is very much his style and signature. He has it in loads of riffs like he man women hater, midnight express and it is very similar in the peacemaker die solo. he has just taken it to a new level, again. If you have been listening to him for a while, the second you hear it, it is instantly recognisable as Nuno's sound, for me. It is mind blowing, brilliant and i am so glad he is finally getting the props he rightfully deserves. Easily one of the best of all time.
@@jacobmusic92 there are no pull offs or hammer ons. Every note is picked.
@@michaelgoyettemusic I am sorry my friend but I have to disagree. The end is definitely all gamer on and pull off with him picking 1 in every 3 notes or so. Watched him do it live, and him talk about it and play it in the Rick Beato interview. He himself talked about the similarity with peacemaker die solo back in 92 at the end of that interview. It is definitely not all picked. Not in the video you reacted to either. Either way it doesn't matter as he is a GOAT no questions asked about that. Man deserves a lot more credit for his talents and songwriting chops. #underated.
"We're doin this solo twice".....YES!!!!!!
The second part of Nuno's Solo has something from Daft Punk's Song Voyager on the Discovery Album (Harpnotes, nearly the end of the song), or also in Daft Punks Face to Face/Short Circuit Song (min. 2.32) on the Alive 2007 Album.
But Nuno plays much faster.
Like this one
After hearing the first three songs from Extreme 6, go back and listen to the 3rd album again.... Nuno has always been spectacular but when you can use your skills without sounding repetitive or stale then you have IT.... and Nuno has IT. Let's be honest, Eddie VH could get in a rut with his tricks, but I loved the final album because it was so fresh. It's a shame that we lost him after that revitalization .
The solo blew me away when I first heard! Soooooooooo good🤟🏼🔥🤟🏼
Craziness!!
All we need is Vito Bratta to come back and release something new too.
I wonder if he kept playing all these years. He was a monster.
God I hope so. Mike tramp is begging him to do anything, not even white lion stuff.
Is Nuno actually ageing? Barely looks older than Extreme II 30 years ago.
Haha. I know right? We’re about the same age but he’s always looked better than me!! 😂
There are some interviews where you can see some slight signs of aging but when he’s rocking out he still has the energy of a kid!! Cheers.
Garys mic flips are epic front man stuff
Sheesh indeed. Agreed
Sounds like Extreme to me. They sounded like this 25 years ago! ANOTHER ‘full tilt’ Extreme song. A new generation has discovered them!
💯
nuno....rules.....🎸🎸🎸
Yep 👍
The solo was great!
Indeed
2000s era guitarist: I do love me some 80s guitar heroes, but if I'm honest, their technical ability can't foot it with today's crop.
Nuno, years after Extreme, disbanded: Hold my beer partner!
Proceeds to craft best face melting solo since the 90s.
He’s still got it!!
I think you have that backwards. Just my opinion.
i cant remember where i commented on this video but im in agreement with you about the Eddie Van Nuno. Eddie would have loved this solo IMO
Yeah the tremolo picking off the top was very Eddie
Wow indeed
It’s crazy fast.
Y'know that part on Ratatouille when Anton Ego tastes the Ratatouille and has a flashback of his childhood, yeah, you can pinpoint the exact moment at 5:47

Hello thank you for your wonderful review of my 2nd favorite guitarist (can't compete with a dead guy, Tommy Bolin is my #1) anyway, I have been there grooving to Nuno for 40 years, it's about time everybody else caught on.
Hey, I didn't know how else to try to go about this a bit covertly, so I figured I'd bury what I'm about to ask you and hope you read this.
As far as my taste in music goes, for 55 years I've listened to bands nobody's heard of, funk, orog rock . Shit just good rock n roll I stopped listening to the radio because it was all crap to me. So coming across something new and exciting would probably be very difficult and then I heard about Ren.
When somebody hears about him and listens to him and here's the stories they immediately become hardcore fans and I am one of them. It is so unbelievable that one person can contain that much talent. He's supposed to have produced all of his own music made his own beats and play multiple instruments
Anyway, I am fully aware that music videos are lip and instruments synced most of the time and so the playing can be off a little bit and you can tell that they're not really playing it at that moment unless of course you look at someone like Nuno and you know that even if he's syncing he'most definitely played it originally
Look, it's killing me to try to ask someone to check this out, but I played for a few years, maybe just enough to give me stupid ideas but could you do me a favor and go and check out his channel and go to the live streams. That's the best place to see what I'm talking about I want and pray that you come back and say it's just glitches or whatever but something's not right. And I'm hoping it's with my perception, because it looks like people that can't really play guitar very well. Or at all. Nothing matches up or there is a struggle to find the right key to be in, chord to play or how the solo goes. I feel like such a shit. But people who can really play well invest the b s and t and deserve recognition for
their efforts. This guy is blowing up so fast, and maybe everything is as the story goes. That's why fans latch onto him so fast... His talent, story, illness and recovery, and awesome range of talent and know how seems almost too good I've known artists who can do most of these things( Nuno being one of them) and Emitt Rhodes, Prince, Paul McCartney , ect. Ok
I hope I'm wrong and only someone with your type skills should judge . If there is anyway you could email me your thoughts on the matter. I believe my address heads the comment. Thank you
I just need to know if
I'm losing it . I know he's helping everyone's channel . But I need to know for ME
I’m not sure what your question is….if the question is do I think Ren is lip-syncing the answer would be no…..I’ve broken down some Ren songs in detail. His fingers are in the right places and even the little mistakes match up. Is that the question?
@@michaelgoyettemusic thank you for getting back to me so quickly I didn't expect that. What happened was is when I went to the live streams every time it got to a guitar jam fingering would get all off with the stream of start freezing up but it only happened when they bring out the guitar as well one time one of the girls voice got all mixed up. There are a couple other spots that I've seen but they were not represented as being live even though you would have thought that they were.
It's just that this guy Ren has got so much talent and he was bedridden for a very long time. The amount of knowledge he seems to possess about video and audio is pretty in-depth. That plus the skills rapping and singing with a voice made for reggae ( when he did that little bit of singing at the end of hi Ren I said right out loud to the person sitting next to me I bet you he would sound great singing reggae) and multiple instruments and everything he's just I guess the real deal which I couldn't be any happier about. I have spent the last three weeks down the rabbit hole in the Renverse for a much needed infusion of new music.
I don't know if you watch any other reaction channels but the things that are being said about him is just unbelievable. People that are deep into the rap game, as well as rock, are saying they've never seen anything like him, and how is it they didn't ever hear of him. It's nuts .
Thank you for clearing that up I knew only someone who was a pro should take a look. My brother was friends and played with Chet Atkins, his hero, a couple times . He lives too far away tho, and he thinks everything is crap since the 60's. Lives too far anyway
Thank you so much. Back down the rabbit hole
I detected a tiny bit of Warren Demartini in that solo it was pretty sick
I haven’t heard that name in years!! It was sick!!
Gary is kiiling it at 61. Also, check out Nuno live with Rihanna. He gets to be himself and the bad is fantastic.
That would be fun to see. I’ll look for some clips
"woah" yeah, same dude
100%
Great song. If you dig nunos stuff check out Mourning Widows, Dramagods and Population1. He's lead vocals and lead everything. Gary has a band with his brother Mark(incredible guitarist) called Hurtsmile. Great bands that I think you would dig. Dramagods album "LOVE" is a great rock album. Solid songs and great production. Smokin solo on the song "Lockdown" He actually was Rhiannas musical director part of him signing on was he was allowed to "fuck with all her songs" it's a cool story how he jumped on board with her. Hope you dig those bands. Enjoyed this video and will definitely check out more of your content. 🤘
Thanks so much for the suggestions! Happy to have you!
Gary also had a band before Hurtsmile called Tribe Of Judah
@@rogerdaly6326 great album.
That was one badazz solo 💥wonder what effects he got those low tone shred notes with lol
I think it’s clean until the very end where there’s an octave maybe.
@@michaelgoyettemusic that’s my impression as well. I’ve heard a lot of people claiming he’s “cheating” with delay in the palm muting section, but I’m certain he’s not. We know he’s more than capable of playing cleanly at that speed from live footage of “Midnight Express” etc.
It's well known nuno doesn't use hardly anything except for a ratt pedal. He's using an octive pedal during the insanity section of the solo. That's about it.
Hi first time viewer of this channel and probably a little late to this, but there's a video on YT with Herman Li (Lead guitar in DragonForce) and Nuno Bettencourt, where they talk about the Rihanna tour in that for a bit along with a lot of other interesting stuff.
Spoiler ahead.
The TLDR on the Rihanna tour is basicly, as it turns out when you're a really successful and rich pop singer you can afford really, really good musicians and you can convert journalists who don't like her, to wtf that was one of the best things I ever saw live?!??
The link if anyone's interested;

Yeah that’s one way to put it!! 😂
Nuno is a Vampire!
It’s the only logical explanation!
Nuno bettencourt made in portugal❤
Be proud!!
Nuno his a Portuguese Guitar GOD.
He. The man
You. R right
Super-amazing guitar!!!!! To me, it was all a tribute to Eddie. Tremolo picking, dive-bombs and.... am I wrong but I think that the muted part is a reference to the tapping intro of "Hot for Teacher" - just Nuno style and on steroids. Man it is good!!! He is definitely the man
I don’t know….Hot For Teacher is outlining arpeggios same as this….the main difference would be lots of guitarists can play Hot For Teacher while I’ve yet to see anyone pull this off.
Tapping vs picking every note at 175 bpms….tapping is much easier between those 2 options. Cheers.
nice
My man said "whoa" 😅
Big words don’t always work!! 😂
Who would win in a guitar battle between Nuno and God? It’s a trick question. Nuno IS God.
😂 Demi-god maybe…… Nunocles!
I love how clean and unproduced his guitar tone is. That is just a guitar plugged directly into a nice tube amp with zero effects and processing, and in 2023 it very much stands out as such.
I almost got a Steve Vai circa Crossroads vibe from Nuno's physicality and certain touches.
The whammy bar stuff had a Vai feel. It’s good stuff.
There are a few songs released from the new album - Banshee, Rebel and Other Side of the Rainbow, if you want check out more of there new stuff.
I’ve already reacted to all of those if you want to check it out! :)
