At the 2002 basketball wc in Minneapolis Dirk contributed big time for Germanys basketball team to upset New Zealand for third place and took the bronze medal! What a German legend, as a European to be 21 years only playing consistently for one big team in the NBA! The Dallas Mavericks, had a great all time German "Wunderkind 'Legend" he ll be sadly missed! "Detlev Schremp" was the first German in the NBA playing at first for the Seattle Supersonics later on Dallas Mavericks and Indiana Pacers in the past but not as famous and especially as popular as Dirk Nowitzki was playing 21 years for the Dallas Mavericks! If I am wrong here do please fell free to correct me!

Same here. Hated Dirk when he was playing since he was good enough to beat some of the best Spurs teams ever assembled (conversely, no Spurs fan ever really hated Nash for example). But yeah what an amazing player and person who brought the Mavs from an ugly rebuild after losing Kidd, Jackson, and Mashburn to one of the best runs in NBA history from about 2000-2011. I was so happy to see the way he got revenge on Miami and that Game 2 from the 2011 Finals might be my favorite Finals game I have ever seen not involving the Spurs. 2011 Mavs were one of the greatest title runs I have ever seen considering the strength of competition they faced at every round.

Dirk is one of my childhood heroes and to see him honored like this last night made my eyes watery. He changed the game for international players and big men alike. International players were not taken serious at one point in time. No 7 footer shot the ball like him before. But, it's his character and what he did off the court that makes me admire him so much. He stayed loyal to his team and fans, he never gave up and worked hard despite having setbacks early on, helped his community, and did it all while remaining humble and respectful to all. Dirk is not just a legendary ball player - he's a legendary human. He deserves this so much and I'm so happy for him.

My Spurs had a run like no other during the great career of Tim Duncan. Part of what made those years so special was seeing my guys stare down the other greats. And Dirk was on the short list of great opponents that made those victories sweeter. And because Dirk was such a nightmare, those years didn't always end in victory. 2006 was especially painful.

I grew up watching Magic and Kareem as a Lakers fan in SoCal, and Michael Jordan later, and then Kobe and Shaq, but from the time Dirk came into the league, you could see he was something special. The version of Dirk we saw through the 2011 playoffs may be the best basketball player I have ever seen. Ran through the defending champ lakers round two, beat the up and coming thunder with KD and Russ and then beat the Miami heat who everyone for sure thought would beat the Mavericks. Dirk was just playing out of his mind during that stretch. If I remember correctly too I don’t think he missed a single free throw through that playoff run if he did he didn’t miss one til the finals.

*I LOVE HOW THE CEREMONY WAS VERY MUCH LIKE DIRK, just plain and simple ceremony.* Although i wished they let his 2011 championship teammates speak, have a little speech to pay tribute to him u know, id love to hear it from them today, from Tyson, Peja, Shawn.

Agree. I loved Duncan's and Ginobili's ceremonies and I think it was because the fun and love you could feel when their teammates talk about each other. I think that part was missing here. But it was great anyway to pay tribute properly to the legend.

Yeah. i guess i wanted my hero dirk to get that kind of ceremony as well.. his closest teammates having speech about him. im a little surprised that stevie nash and terry wasn't around Bcuz they are the 2 closest sidekicks of him that u can think of when u think about dirk.

@@6bDorotea Nash and Carlisle (If you count him too) couldn’t be there because they have a game, Nets vs. Pacers. Idk about Terry though.

@@timeflies313 i think its because jet is also a coach now... But i mean they could have set the date where Carlisle and nash doesn't have games so they can be there at the ceremony i mean its a special night. They should have really prepared it for my man dirk

@@6bDorotea Hmmm, they could have. But the other guys might have conflicts in other days too so they might have picked the date where most of them could come.
