I really appreciate all the thoughtful feedback everyone! A couple corrections & clarifications from homies in the comments / additional testing: - GCD is 1.5 seconds - In general, only spells that cost mana activate the 5 second rule. - Most instant cast shaman spells (shocks, totems, weapon imbuements) don't seem to reset the swing timer the way it does on mage and other cloth casters. Paladin may be similar. Thanks for watching! Stream: www.twitch.tv/zik0rik UI: ua-cam.com/video/Tt-XZ5q5MMA/v-deo.html Rune Swapping: ua-cam.com/video/75aqFXXbaFI/v-deo.html
Something else you missed that doesn't come up for every caster, is that spells that don't cost mana because of a buff, but that normally do cost mana will still activate the 5 second rule, but not exactly every spell that works this way. Examples are clearcasting from mages and omen of clarity.
Regarding chugging, i think the reason you find it harder now than before, is because classic changed the spellbatch window from 200ms to 10ms. The spellbatch window was very generous with chugging mechanic, as long as you were chugging in the same batch as the tick, you get the chug. You didnt even need to stop moving back then
To be honest. I've played this game for 15 years, and I never really spent the time to get nuances down for casting. This was extremely insightful and well spoken. I learned a lot, and will subconsciously consider how the tick system works. If i had to manually focus on it, I'd lose my shit.
To be fair. some of these mechanics have been deprecated for a while. So if you're playing retail you'd be forgiven not knowing them. the 5 second rule isn't a thing since... Wrath I think? same with the 2 second tick. Not to mention this one is kind of "whatever" since it's only really important to track if you mess up the tick on full hp and mana. Otherwise, you're still net neutral in almost every scenario, because you get your tick BEFORE the cast, rather than after. you don't really miss out on any ticks. Chugging also is not a thing anymore together with the 2 second tick in retail, since... Wrath? Cata? somewhere thereabout. There's also snaps-hotting for dots which also has been removed or changed if I recall around Cata. Basically. if you played during vanilla or BC (not classic but back in the day), don't worry, 99% of the people didn't know this stuff either beyond surface level, and by the time people kind of figured these things out, they started getting removed/changed.
This is seriously a fantastic guide. Incredibly in depth but you explain things thoroughly and provide examples where it makes sense. Hope you share some more!
Tips on using arcane missile (or any channeled spells). First, it resets mp5 when you start channeling, not when you stop. Use it like fireblast, to finish off mobs quicker to start mp5 earlier, or to cap off casting batch of spells to start wanding. Using AM in this way, it really slaps with good mana cost, just like fireblast. Tip #2, wand shoots instantly (precisely 0.5s) after channel (assuming you've channeled longer than 1.5 sec, gcd), which is 1 second (maybe 1.5s? not sure) faster than when you are wanding after any other non-channeled spell. So basically they do more dps than on paper, as long as it is used right before wanding.
Dude! That was a very well put together and articulated piece of Classic knowledge right there! Over the years i’ve learned/noticed these concepts from pure playing and studying PvP vids etc, but never quite managed to sum it all up as well you’ve done for us here! Thank you for this masterclass 👨🎓📖👍
As a 22 yo when i played classic in 2020 , i spent like 4 months to discover most of this detailed mechanics during leveling except the chuging one , nice video sir u will save time for new caster players
Specifically, five second rule can be said to be broken precisely when you spend mana. So yes, priests can use inner will to avoid breaking FSR, and you can also precast heals, cancel them if they're not needed (e.g. tank dodges, boss doesn't use burst skill yet) and not break FSR, but prepare a big efficient slow heal if it's needed. And you can do things like append an arcane missiles cast at the end of your spell batch if you know you will be trying to FSR after - because channeled mana consumption is at start of cast. A lot of mana inefficient instant spells become substantially more efficient when used this way, and give you advance time to move. These mana mechanics are hugely important for being a truly great healer, it was something I always tried to hammer into my guilds' healers. So many healers don't think about stuff like batching, inefficiency of HoTs, boss swings, etc... but I don't edit videos and this is a great format for it. Good job handling some of the more obscure mechanics in WoW!
Playing 14 years or so, I've been aware of half of these, namely the more visible ones not concerning the tick and swing timer. This video is super interesting as it gives me something new to work into how I play the game. It was well explained. I look forward to Classic+ theorycrafting videos!
I have a good caster knowledge that was not mentioned here, for anyone interested, read more… Basically, I could call it range closing, and essentially it’s the act of completing a hard cast when your enemy moves out of range. How it works is pretty simple; You hard cast a spell, let’s say Frostbolt. But, by the time you finish the cast, the target is out of range by a few yards. Normally the cast would fail because you are out of ranged. However, I learned that if you jump forward (W + spacebar simultaneously) at the latency cancel threshold, you will be in range of the target and the cast will go off. This is some seriously hidden tech that I discovered and has been under the radar. Hope this helps some aspiring casters ❤
Some good useful tips. There are all kinda of ways to min/max your playstyle. Even the point about position/facing so u won't get dazed is useful..... people forget about how things like posion/facing can make a big difference when fighting an enemy in pve or pvp..... plus daze will really screw u up lol.
This is a really good guide my friend, love it! And interestingly enough, you can apply the same idea to rogue’s energy and swing timers. (Apologies for unnecessary comment if I wrote it to earl, and you actually mention this later in the video)
Dude, i've been playing WoW for a long time, over a decade, and all this stuff flew over my head. I'm actually impressed on how by mastering the in and outs of the game rules you can constantly mob without getting hit once. Just by game knowledge you saved tons of death and it's no rocket science just being patient and being aware of what you're doing all the time. Amazing, i forgot how deep this game stuff can go ! 🖤
Great comment, games with deep niche mechanics like these and like League really give experienced players something to dial in and master which makes them that much more compelling imo
tbh I figured that out making this when I was testing all the swing timer interactions lol, I'm sure someone has discovered it at some point before but I hadn't heard of it either. Appreciate the comment thanks for watching.
There were a few bits about MP5 that even I didn't know about, interesting. Most of the info here is fundamentals so I'm surprised you didn't mention Keybinds and Camera Control with the mouse - undoubtedly the two most important skills in WoW.
Really fantastic guide. I'm glad there are other people who are into maximizing these things. The only one I don't use is chugging, and I need to try your wand macro. Very interesting. 👍
Great vid, might want to consider putting your Twitch at the top of the description for people to easily be able to follow (like I just did) :) looking forward to the SoD streams, good luck!
You should also mention probably the spell queue thing in WoW, and how you can change it with command. It's important in pvp to have the value lower so you dont accidently spell queue something that breaks cc, but for pve bigger/default spell queue window allows u to have 0ms between casting spells
This is such an excellent guide! Well done! There is one thing that you didn't cover and I'm curious as to why. Using the latency of your cast you can cancel and start a new cast "before" your cast bar is completed.
I may have missed you saying it, but 5sr kicks in specifically when Mana is spent. So spells without mana cost don't incur the 5sr. Example: Priest uses Inner Focus (0 mana, instant cast), and it makes the next spell cast cost 0 mana. Neither Inner Focus nor the subsequent spell cast will start the 5sr. This can greatly extend mana recovery time mid-fight, especially if you just cancel-casted two heals in a row.
@@andywest6062 I was really only referring to the actual game mechanic, not what any UI add-ons show. I'm sure you're correct that add-ons can be set to always show mana ticks.
Yes great point I forgot to mention it directly but tried to add it in a probably way-too-quick text blurb at 8:28, Cold Snap is a free insta that doesn't trigger it and I believe clearcasted spells on mage behave exactly like you're saying
To master the 5 second rule and mp5 tips you can watch some arcane mage videos in tbc. :) Also i would love to learn how to get my ui to look like yours
You should do similar video about Balance Druid leveling. Many people ignore this spec, because they don’t know and never tried it - but using some of these mechanics (melee combat instead of wanding in combo with instant spells like moonfire) and some other druids spell interactions - the leveling can be really good and smooth and fun and challenging in a positive meaning
I've actually been chillin on a druid in Hardcore lately, incredibly fun and deep class once you get most of your tools - I hadn't experienced it much in classic before. I also love the balance/resto hybrid specs in tbc/wrath. Solid idea though maybe I'll make one once I get to 60!
My most recent Paladin HC upload shows consistent Swing Timer casting in an area with mobs that are 3-4 levels above me, where I need to heal a lot in combat to stay safe. Always hit with your weapon while you heal. It's way more efficient. 👍 On a Balance Druid, you can do this with your damage spells too. Swing your weapon and cast at the same time. With the right speed weapon, you basically have a metronome for mana management.
Paladin and warlock mount summons are spells that cost mana and so trigger the 5 second rule, so using it at the end of combat to move to the next mob will stop your regen. Its better to just run or buy a normal mount in a combat area
It should be worded "mana spent" rather than "spell cast" (first section discussing the five second rule). There are situations where you get free casts (inner focus, clear casting, etc) these don't put you in non-regen but the spell is cast. You do say it later but it is the trigger for fsr. In the old days (from oceania >200ms) we needed to use a stopcasting macro to recast (while still casting) when the current spell wasn't finished. Has this been changed in modern classic server-client?
Truth good point, I couldn't tell you about the stopcasting thing b/c I never used it back in the day but I did see someone else mention it as well in the comments
@@Zikorik ,you can cast aoe instants while moving along with downgrading ranks of ice barrier in mage case all with click to move ,to get guaranteed novas vs warr/feral/rogue
Turning on the tick timer in ElvUI was not easy. Its not a default setting and its buried deep in the many, many settings (its called something like 'enabling power gain' or something else very non-intuitive). The chug-walking tip is very helpful, but good luck setting up your UI to show you when the 2-second ticks are happening.
Ya agreed there isn't much in ElvUI that is "easy" lol, powerful tools often come with overwhelming amount of options. I'm gonna try to figure out a way to share my profile so people can get this setup without knowing how to mess with all the options
only thing not mentioned here is mp5 from gear, which follows the 2 second regen tick and is always active :) Mp5 is a really niche stat that gets better as fights get longer (naxx) so you shouldn't gear for mp5 on most classes.
I played vanilla through cataclys as a mage and never once i used or knew someone who did this... Poor priest struggling with regen... Now i wanna try the chugging for less downtime while grinding
@@Steevy84 not the jumps, but the spell cool downs.you have to wait for 1.5s between two spells, especially for warlocks with castsequence /gse macros for dots, try not to spam the button or spells will be missed. i replicated his UI as close as i could. I figured out the mana bar and the casting bar. you need the elvui addon. import this string and it will get you close to what he has. im hoping zik will send us his string eventually!
a couple of thing i did out of intuition, the other i always heard about but never understood it. This visual explanation was just what i needed. I never really cared about any of this stuff ,but in my older age im intrigued in mechanics and want to learn. What addon is for the timmer ive tried looking but cant seem to find.
Holy shit never knew about the chugging! Great video man, have you done a video on spell coefficients? And how they affect all spells differently. Playing resto druid in SOD and would like to know
This is all muscle memory for me. And it has been for so long, I forgot the learning curve of ranged play in general in WoW. I remeber back peddling and casting arcane missles then moving to cancel it, complete waste of mana.
Seriously I didn’t hear or see if you said the add ins I’m fairly new to wow well I started in shadowlands expansion and went 1 to max fury warrior now I’m on SOD classic and I’ve been enjoying it but feels like a new game again aside from the wastelands that the barrens is, FOR THE HORDE! Yeah so any suggestions for add ins besides questie and bagon would be truly appreciated! Also you’ve got a new sun I appreciate how well put together this guide is I could actually understand it 😂

Appreciate it mate, ElvUI covers most of it for me - I use ElvUI, Weapon Swing Timers, and Questie as my main ones. Weakaura def great for specific spell alerts / cool UI animations and such but I don't have much experience with it. When I'm into endgame PvE I'll pick up a damage meter like Recount or Details and I also recently started using this one called Voiceover which uses AI to give most NPCs speech and it's actually amazing if you're into the story / immersion. I'm gonna make a vid tomorrow before the season launches to share my ElvUI setup if you want to start there, I really love it now that I've been using it for a while it's hard to go without it
Do you need to add a stopcasting line to your spells in order to take advantage of the server side finished cast? it seems like, unless you move, your character won't start another spell until your previous spell is complete client side.
Stopcasting line like with a macro? where your next spell stops cast right when it registers server side before casting again? If this is a thing I actually didn't know about it, will def give it a try and see, appreciate the tip.
Do you have an essential addon list? I was looking but i may of missed it, never played classic so not sure whats worth (aside from the basics like weak aura, bartender etc)

I appreciate the level of sweat in this. Could you do a similar one for how to be the most efficient & sweaty in 5 man dungeons? The use of assist/targeting macros etc. For melee/caster
That's a cool idea, I'm about to be getting into a ton of Season of Discovery where all this stuff will still apply so I'll def try to make some caster PvE min/max vids for dungeons and the new raid
Ya exactly in combat it's basically cast non-stop until you are going to go oom, then leverage 5s rule with wanding as you regen. The main idea is trying not to cast like a single spell in the middle of your regen window because then you just set your regen back another 5 seconds.
yooo man great video I've been following ya since classic release (I remember some AV vids) Any chance you can share your UI? I am going to jump back into wow and love your setup - had a very similar setup, but yours is way more dialed Thanks!
Yooo that's amazing lol, I was remembering back to how this channel started making pvp vids during my HWL grind (mostly in AV lol) - I'll make a vid sharing the setup tomorrow before the season launches! Appreciate you stickin around homie will be good to have you back in Azeroth.
Do you use a pre-built UI or did you customize it yourself? I'm new to WoW and I'm finding the original UI and the addons recommended by some friends to be extremely overpopulated with little valuable information. I really love yours!
This is so helpful! What's your WeakAura for the mana bar? The only ones I can find only show the 2-second tick after i've cast, but yours is always showing the ticking.
Glad it was useful mate, mine is built into ElvUI - I made a video sharing my profile and setup, just added it to the pinned comment if you're interested. Otherwise I saw another comment saying there is a WA called 5 second rule that does the same thing
I'm gonna make a video sharing the whole setup tmrw but if you want to just enable that for your ElvUI setup its located here: Unitframes > Individual Units tab > Player tab > Power section in the scroll menu > in the upper right of these options you'll see a little box that says Energy/Mana Regen Tick
There's a lot of little stuff like that I've forgotten about over the years, this game is so deep lol. I'll be trying those again now esp for R1 blizz, appreciate the comment!
here I was thinking the Meditation talent from Druids was not that good for hybrid play because it only affected castings like the tooltip says, and we have only got Healing Touch, Regrowth and Wrath pretty much. I feel so dumb

A couple corrections & clarifications from homies in the comments / additional testing:

In the old days (from oceania >200ms) we needed to use a stopcasting macro to recast (while still casting) when the current spell wasn't finished. Has this been changed in modern classic server-client?
Truth good point, I couldn't tell you about the stopcasting thing b/c I never used it back in the day but I did see someone else mention it as well in the comments
Great delivery on some awesome info. Thanks 🤘🏻
This is gold bro thanks for in depth guide, i am playing mostly melees but wanna try tp up my caster gaming ;)
Click to move also is very beneficial for casters if managed well it gives you more freedom while moving to think what to do next...
Actually never tried this I've always moved with wasd and steered camera with mouse but I'll have to try it out
@@Zikorik ,you can cast aoe instants while moving along with downgrading ranks of ice barrier in mage case all with click to move ,to get guaranteed novas vs warr/feral/rogue
The only 5 second rule I know is when you drop food on the ground and have 5 seconds to pick it up before the aids gets on it.
LOL
Turning on the tick timer in ElvUI was not easy. Its not a default setting and its buried deep in the many, many settings (its called something like 'enabling power gain' or something else very non-intuitive). The chug-walking tip is very helpful, but good luck setting up your UI to show you when the 2-second ticks are happening.
Ya agreed there isn't much in ElvUI that is "easy" lol, powerful tools often come with overwhelming amount of options. I'm gonna try to figure out a way to share my profile so people can get this setup without knowing how to mess with all the options
Just ge tthe addon called " 5 second rule"
Leatrix plus also has this built into its settings along with a ton more quality of life.
@@coldsnap_joji3567where is this inside Leatrix Plus? I can’t find it
Holy shit. I'm planning on being a Mage Healer in SoD and chugging is a dream come true.
Amen
thank you that was a lot of good information. is chugging just the same as drinkwalking exactly or is there any difference between the terminology?
Same thing
i suspected, thanks monnisti@@Monnisti
Ya it's the same sorry that's just what I've called it since I learned it and that's what my macro is called for it lol
Goated video. Good shit brother. Thanks
brother the GCD is 1.5 sec for any non hasted (pre tbc) casters
Shit you right lol my b
only thing not mentioned here is mp5 from gear, which follows the 2 second regen tick and is always active :) Mp5 is a really niche stat that gets better as fights get longer (naxx) so you shouldn't gear for mp5 on most classes.
Yes I agree I forgot to mention it so I added a quick text blurb at 1:33 most people probably missed it tho lol good call!
As a dad in his 30s, just playing to remember the good old days, i application this video. Im going to be like the kids with my pro level plays /s
The hero I didn't know I needed
Fantastic video!!! I wish all the luck to you.
Extremely Good video thank You 😮
I played vanilla through cataclys as a mage and never once i used or knew someone who did this... Poor priest struggling with regen... Now i wanna try the chugging for less downtime while grinding
i knew all of it, im proud of myself
MASTERCASTER
Thanks for the great video. One thing though, GCD in classic is 1.5 secs not 1 sec. I believe the change comes in TBC.
Came to post the same thing.
hmmm, so jumps take 1.5 sec and not 1 sec?
@@Steevy84 not the jumps, but the spell cool downs.you have to wait for 1.5s between two spells, especially for warlocks with castsequence /gse macros for dots, try not to spam the button or spells will be missed. For gse, there is a variable call /click pause gcd, but it seems not really working, and I don’t find any info or examples of the usage of the command line on internet…..
tbc is still 1.5 by default, and rogue is 1.0 iirc
You are all correct, my b
5s is more important for healers. Casting and canceling a heal in case someone already healed so you keep regenerating.
Such a Great guide. Also that whole UI setup is a beauty.
Thanks homie, a lot of people are asking about it so I'll make a vid tmrw sharing the setup
Phenomenal. Thank you!
Really great video.
Actually very informative video. There is such crap load useless Season Of Dads class speculative videos that add nothing. Thanks alot!

i replicated his UI as close as i could. I figured out the mana bar and the casting bar. you need the elvui addon. import this string and it will get you close to what he has. im hoping zik will send us his string eventually!
I feel like YT pruned the string because of crypto scams or whatever. Or I've been baited.
Respect the effort lol I've been busy with fam and holiday stuff since last week but I'll make a video sharing the setup tomorrow!
@@BillNyeTheBountyGuy lmao ya yt does weird stuff with comments sometimes
wow. Very interesting. TY!
a couple of thing i did out of intuition, the other i always heard about but never understood it.
Playing resto druid in SOD and would like to know
Great video. Love it. New subscriber.
Welcome :D
Thanks for the amazing insight! Could you please share your addons with us? Your UI looks A+
Ya I got you I will make a video sharing the setup tomorrow morning before the season launches
I've been playing a mage all throughout classic and SoM in high-end raiding guilds and I had no idea about the 5 second mana thing xD
Now you can max that pump a lil more :D
Excellent ! 🤩
Also you’ve got a new sun I appreciate how well put together this guide is I could actually understand it 😂
Edit: got lvl 25 hunter
Starting a mage currently at 13 at the crossroads so looking for some tips and tricks which this video has provided some great understanding of spellcasting
hell ya awesome to hear you're pumpin!! I made a video sharing my ElvUI profile and setup if you're interested, it's in the pinned comment now.
kickass guide
Hi, i have a video request: whats your UI and addon you use to be efficient.(im a returning player of few years off)
And top tier content, insta subs!
I'm gonna make a vid tomorrow before the season launches to share my ElvUI setup if you want to start there, I really love it now that I've been using it for a while it's hard to go without it
@@Zikorik thx ill check the video about elvui for sure. And ill switch to it tomorow and ill give à check about the voiceover one for sure.
Please do more!
Planning on it, thanks for the support :D
Very good video
Thanks homie
Do you need to add a stopcasting line to your spells in order to take advantage of the server side finished cast? it seems like, unless you move, your character won't start another spell until your previous spell is complete client side.
Yes, or u move and cast an instant
Stopcasting line like with a macro? where your next spell stops cast right when it registers server side before casting again? If this is a thing I actually didn't know about it, will def give it a try and see, appreciate the tip.
Cool video, learned a lot new stuff - thanks :)
More content like this please. I want to be the best mage I can be.
Great info!
Do you have an essential addon list? I was looking but i may of missed it, never played classic so not sure whats worth (aside from the basics like weak aura, bartender etc)
ElvUI covers most of it for me - I use ElvUI, Weapon Swing Timers, and Questie as my main ones. Weakaura def great for specific spell alerts / cool UI animations and such but I don't have much experience with it. @@Zikorik how do you show the 5 sec rule and 2 sec tick? Is that a specific WA?
I appreciate the level of sweat in this. Could you do a similar one for how to be the most efficient & sweaty in 5 man dungeons? The use of assist/targeting macros etc. For melee/caster
its insane that youd consider any of this sweat, those are more like the basics
@@Freshomania Youre right, by comparison to other guides i've found on youtube this one is actually competent. I was using the term as a compliment.
That's a cool idea, I'm about to be getting into a ton of Season of Discovery where all this stuff will still apply so I'll def try to make some caster PvE min/max vids for dungeons and the new raid
@@Freshomania
Yup. Mastery of the fundamentals.
Great Video.
When do we use the 5sr in a combat scenario? We basically got to cast non-stop in raid or dungeons and drink/chug while out of combat right?
Ya exactly in combat it's basically cast non-stop until you are going to go oom, then leverage 5s rule with wanding as you regen. The main idea is trying not to cast like a single spell in the middle of your regen window because then you just set your regen back another 5 seconds.
yooo man great video
I've been following ya since classic release (I remember some AV vids)
Any chance you can share your UI? I am going to jump back into wow and love your setup - had a very similar setup, but yours is way more dialed
Thanks!
Yooo that's amazing lol, I was remembering back to how this channel started making pvp vids during my HWL grind (mostly in AV lol) - I'll make a vid sharing the setup tomorrow before the season launches! Appreciate you stickin around homie will be good to have you back in Azeroth.
@@Zikorik amazing Ty
How does spirit work when your shapeshifted? Does your mana regen on each tick even if you're using cat or bear abilities?
Great video! I really like your plater? or elvui nameplates anyway you can share?
Thanks homie - it's most all ElvUI, Weapon Swing Timers and Questie are the main ones I use besides that. I'll make a vid tmrw sharing the setup!
chugging tip has changed the way i play SOD mage (chronically OOM no more)
Share the cast bar with the 2sec and mp5 ticks please and thanks
I'm gonna make a video sharing the whole setup tmrw but if you want to just enable that for your ElvUI setup its located here: Unitframes > Individual Units tab > Player tab > Power section in the scroll menu > in the upper right of these options you'll see a little box that says Energy/Mana Regen Tick
Surprised you don't use @cursor macros for AoE spells. Good video!
There's a lot of little stuff like that I've forgotten about over the years, this game is so deep lol. I'll be trying those again now esp for R1 blizz, appreciate the comment!
Great!
Just in case you didn't know, the technique you're calling "Global Moving" here is more commonly referred to as "Stutter-stepping".
Awesome video, anyone know what addon he is using?
here I was thinking the Meditation talent from Druids was not that good for hybrid play because it only affected castings like the tooltip says, and we have only got Healing Touch, Regrowth and Wrath pretty much. I feel so dumb
Most of this stuff is not intuitive at all, especially some of the tooltip wording, no need to feel dumb :)
What is the addon for the health and mana bar showing the ticks?
ElvUI - I made a video sharing my profile and setup , just added it to the pinned comment if you're interested!
Can you make a guide this for melee ?
Great video, thank you. How do you get ElvUi to show that 2 second timer on your mana bar? Thanks
Unitframes > Individual Units tab > Player tab > Power section in the scroll menu > in the upper right of these options you'll see a little box that says Energy/Mana Regen Tick
what addon can i use for the global tic timer? i couldnt understand what Ui he says at 7:58
I use ElvUI for most everything, the only other addons I'm using in this are Weapon Swing Timers and Questie. I'll make a vid tmrw sharing my setup but if you want to find it on your own, it's located here in ElvUI: Unitframes > Individual Units tab > Player tab > Power section in the scroll menu > in the upper right of these options you'll see a little box that says Energy/Mana Regen Tick
I would love to get a list / config of your UI and mods. I haven't been able to find something like this for mage in SoD.
