Terrific. Nice to see Ben Polcer's piano work in close-up. The song is 'I Can't Escape From You' (1936) by Leo Robin & Richard Whiting. It is also known as 'San Jacinto Stomp'.
+John Dixon Tyler is right, John. It's a complicated history, but San Jacinto Stomp was actually "You can't Escape From Me", written by Erskine Hawkins in 1939, his own composition, after he had recorded "I Can't Escape From You", by Richard A. Whiting in 1936. But when George Lewis recorded "You Can't Escape From Me" in 1944, he called it "San Jacinto Stomp". Then Bunk Johnson recorded it in 1946 but mistakenly called it "I Can't Escape From You" and it's been misnamed and popularized as " I Can't Escape From You". When George Lewis and Kid Sheik recorded it in 1961 he named it correctly as "You Can't Escape From Me". So San Jacinto Stomp is actually "You Can't Escape From Me" a totally different song from the famous "I Can't Escape From You" that Marla is singing and which Shotgun Jazz Band does such a great job with !
Was just down in New Orleans over the weekend. Love this Venue! Saw Dana Abbott play as well...damn, she is great. Man, there's some great Music happening down there. And, the audiences were very respectful of the bands too. Pretty rare in Nashville.
+Michael Sammin Shotgun is based in New Orleans, Louisiana. What's interesting is that although they're one of the very best and most exciting traditional New Orleans jazz bands in NOLA, none of the members were born there. Marla Dixon., leader/ trumpet / vocals is originally from Toronto, Canada, John Dixon, ( Marla's husband) was originally from Florida and then Toronto., Haruka Kikuchi, trombone, is from Japan, James Evans is form the UK. and Ben Polcer, sitting in on piano, is from NYC and their regular drummer , Justin Peake, (not in this gig), is from Alabama and also lives in Brooklyn, NYC. Yet they play like they were born in NOLA and are now based there.
One of the best bands around at the moment.
My favorite Shogun Front Line. Haruka, Marla and James and Ben on piano. I can't esscape that's true. 😂👍

+Pops Coffee The 'Can't Escape from You' vs 'San Jacinto Stomp' is a hotly contested debate between Tyler and anyone that wants to debate him.
+John Dixon Far be it from me to argue with Tyler!!
