Hi, I’ve done this to one of my sticks for aesthetics and to waterproof it, mine is black all over though. I believe charring wood seals it and prevents water getting in. I have seen videos where lengths of wood or wooden shingles are charred before fixing to a roof or the sides of a timber frame building for protection.
Man got some dowells bc I found your channel. And for the life of me I can't get it to look like that. I have used this technique before on different things and it worked for me. Even did a 15 by 12 mancave room floor one time. And can't do these dowells for some reason. Think the are poplar and they have great looking grain...I don't know I don't know why...
If it's poplar it won't look like that, the ones I'm burning are pine, believe it or not there's still sap present and it helps with the burning. The best way to handle the poplar is to torch the whole thing evenly then go back and sand it as evenly as possibly to your desired look.

I gave up and just oiled the hell out of the to bring out the grain. Wish I could get them to look like yours though. Trying pine and oak next time. They were just more expensive.
I don't know what I did wrong but I could not - for the life of me - get my stick to burn like yours. I did everything you said, even went out and bought the same torch as you. The torch seemed to just create a patchy pattern and would not highlight the grain pattern. Any tips?
@@hanz79wvu it definitely takes practice and a smooth flow! I'll try to do another video in the near future that'll show the process a bit better. If you aren't happy with how it looks, torch it black then go back and sand to your liking, you get a beautiful ebony!
I've never tried maple, but I would think it would have a similar effect, but please use a scrap piece to practice, I don't want to be responsible for ruining a good maple stick! 😊 You're welcome!

That's it, not that you can't do it with other woods, but the pine dowels are just perfect for it. What I'd say is if you have a black torched stick, just sand the fire out of it and see if you can get a good look that way.

Were you using pine dowels?
@@timpevey868 Yup. Sanded them. and then burned them to create a not-so-great patchy pattern.

How long do those canisters last on average. Do you get a few done with one .
Oh they last a good while, I haven't kept count, but many sticks.
