What shanty or folk song should we sing next? :)
Bully in the Alley???
I'd love love LOVE to hear you guys do Joli Rouge!
old chariot
Just run through all the shanties from Assassin's Creed Black Flag
Then I can can enjoy hours of your brilliance in Pirate form
Suil a ruin as an epic Metal cover would be awesome😎🤘
thanks for having me aboard once again lad, always a pleasure!
Your singing has elevated my life higher than the tide.
: )
Somehow YOU have the most "Pirate" voice in these shanties brother! Yo HO and Keep'em comin!!
Y'know, this is the first time I've heard you sing. I knew you were musically inclined, but your singing is goddamn incredible. Though that's not to say I expected anything less. Anyway, great performance as usual. I hope we get to hear you on more tracks moving forward.💜
You all were amazing!!!
John, Anna, Colm, Peyton, and Richaad: Wanna see us do some epic metal sea shanties?
John, Anna, Colm, Peyton, and Richaad: *Wanna see us do it again?*
Why , of corset!
The answer is yes. Always yes.
DAMN YEAAAAS
Oh, what a silly question. As if the answer could be anything other than "yes". 😂
Yar!
History behind this song:
“Santana” is a slang for Santa Anna, a Mexican General/President/Dictator (full name Antonio López de Santa Anna)
This is a folk song, originally in French, turned into sea shanty, and modified throughout the years. (suspected by British, and later American sailors) It dates back to at least 1850 and is a Ahistorical tale about the Battle of ether Monterrey or Molino del Rey(anglicized as ‘Molly del Rey’) depending on who is singing. It’s ahistorical because in the song “Santana gained the day” or “Taylor ran away”(Zachary Taylor, the American general in those battles). In reality the Americans won those battles.
The British are suspected to be the ones to come up with the shanty (though the melody is from the French song) because Anglo-American relations were never good until the late 1800’s.
Also funny enough, the Americans found the song catchy and added to it. “And a boastful Yank for a captain too!”
Except, it's Santiana, not Santana.
Awesome dude, I'm mexican and I didn´t know this info. Thanks for it.
What I'm getting from this is that this song is a collaboration project of nations
Crazy to see the influence Santa Anna has had. I just listened to the ballad of the Alamo by Marty Robbins, crazy to see the same person in both genres.
@@OusqaOuswafWell this was a very polemic war since people saw Santa Anna as a dictator and a traitor to Mexico, but people including Lincoln and U. Grant saw the US not as a liberator to the Mexicans, but rather as a greater evil
I love how Anna sounds absolutely fucking THRILLED to be doing her verse.
This is my favourite verse of the song too! Great voices all around
Favorite part was that little WHOOP! during the "well". Fucking adorable.
@@johnermactavish1162 It sounds like she just threw it in there, comes out so naturally.
Haha, true! They all sound like they're having fun, though. Great song!
Hearing her (for the first time) made me go like : wait, who's singing that?! i wanna hear more of this :)
Im starting to think that sea shantys are meant to be metal, awesome job as always!
There’s no life more metal than the pirate life.
I'd say they were close to the metal of their time so it makes sense
I'm okay with this...also amazing work
@@grischad20 Alestorm!
right? I totally agree
We’re off and AWAY! 🤟🏻😎💪🏻
I was so psyched to see you on this collab! Absolutely adore your voice, been listening to your covers on repeat for weeks!
I love your voice and actually used one of your songs as my wedding song! Keep up the excellent work!
You fit in these songs so seamlessly! When I listen to this, I have no doubt that you are a real pirate.
I've been listening to your music forever and its great to see you
Will y'all do another collaboration?
i love that Peyton is getting more publicity through other content creators, he really deserves it.
I agree. His voice is so good.
I freakin Love Peyton!! such an amazing voice and I hope he gets the recognition he deserves!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I agree!! He has such a good voice for metal music
And he has such a presence too
I love the gruff, pirate-like voices in the metal version that make it still sound very much like a sea shanty. It's such a nice blend while holding faith to the original feel of the song
May I interest pirate metal?
Peyton just makes it better by adding his Viking-esq voice to this. Really adds the diversity of the crew and momentum of the song.
I don't think I've actually ever heard Richaad sing before these sea shanties. He has a good voice, he should sing more.
He has a bit in Caleb Hyles's cover of Bring Me To Life from several years ago.
He also has a piece in sea shanty metal randy dandy ho from around three months prior to this post.
Agreed
@@gavinnoller2655 Drunken Sailor too as well
What would you name each crew member? GO! 🏴☠️🤘
My name is Captain vas Fckboi
Peyton “Purify the Seas” Parrish, Anna “Deadeye Damsel” Pantsuitington, Colm “The Irishman” McGuinness, Richaad “Rum Runnin’” E.B., and Captain Jon The Longhaired
Richard: Metalbeard the Swashbuckler
Anna: Princess Pilfer
Peyton: Strongarm
Colm: Thunderthroat
Jonathan: Captain Rockbeard
Everybody just gets the name Cabbage
Richard I'd probably call the "Shredder" for the amount of guitar shredding he does.
Anna would be the "Widow-maker" for her ability to steal the souls of those who hear her voice.
After listening to Peyton, I'd probably give him the name, "The Stoic."
Jonathan would probably get the simple name of "The Helmsman" because how much he feels like the leader of the group.
And you? I think "McGuinness the Four-Voice" would be appropriate. Your voice always gives me chills with each octave you sing.
(Edit: grammar errors)
Colm's coda in this rendition was incredible. Something about his voice deep as the briney and that instrumental… chills.
He has his own version on his channel and it's dope as hell.
@@Illier1 I know, I've seen it ;)
As a french speaker it's so strange to listen to the english version but i love it !
If you haven't seen/heard it, Skáld and The Longest Johns have an excellent French cover!
As a German I can relate
Hisse et hoOooOoo
Mais tellement
Moi aussi
At first I was like "but I know this melody, it sounds like Santiano (a french song by Hugues Auffray)", and just like that, I learnt that the song I loved since I was a child was in fact just the french version of Santiana. I've never felt so betrayed by my own culture.
And I thought "It sounds like the german sea shanty/rock band Santiano"^^ they are dope by the way
@@Metalhammer1993 Just checked the german version, it's so good too ! Weird how the original was Santiana and both french and german decided it shall be Santiano instead x)
Actually, according to someone esle here:
"History behind this song:
“Santana” is a slang for Santa Anna, a Mexican General/President/Dictator (full name Antonio López de Santa Anna)
This is a folk song, originally in French, turned into sea shanty, and modified throughout the years. (suspected by British, and later American sailors) It dates back to at least 1850 and is a Ahistorical tale about the Battle of ether Monterrey or Molino del Rey(anglicized as ‘Molly del Rey’) depending on who is singing. Also funny enough, the Americans found the song catchy and added to it. “And a boastful Yank for a captain too!”"
Same here. Always knew the rather innocent French version. I must say I much prefer the og version.
YES ANOTHER SEA SHANTY WITH MY FAVORITE PIRATES
I love this cover. Anna’s part was so CRISP tho!! It was a great break from the growling everyone else had, like more a symphonic rock feel and I love that. Everyone did great here, her part just stood out the most to me
I agree.
Big fan of colm’s version. This is soooo gooood!!
I love that we hear more and more of Richaadeb's singing voice spread across all kinds of channels
I don't know where shanty bands find their female vocalists, or if they just naturally attract insanely talented women, but I've never heard a woman in a shanty band who was ever disappointing. They've all been nothing short of amazing.
Annapantsu is very talented i would check her out if you haven't already
It's totally the most banger Sea Shanty Metal Cover that you, Peyton Parrish, annapantsu, Music Colm McGuiness, and RichaadEB really outdone yourselves well man and ma'am but as always man i love it, so far as you're the coolest man that would ever make this
I like how the video literally highlights the vocalists during their parts, and the song itself is amazing!
i love how you can tell the accent on Colm is so diffrent to everyone else, but fits in perfectly with every song!
Yeaaah more metal sea shanties!!
Anna, blows me away every time
Jon, the growl and distortiooon so hot!
Richard, I can't help to smile when he sings
Colm, it's just insane all his different singing voices
And Peyton, I'm going to obsessively listen to him now
Everyone just smashes it every time.
Also... You should really consider selling streaming tickets for your show in Dreamhack for those not in the US ;-;
i think a real life pirate's head would explode if they heard this
Colm never fails to astound me with his range
All these metal shanties should be put in 1 album.
Can't say I'm upset by the recent uptick in people interested in sea shanties over the last year or so lol. This is a good one and a good crew to boot.
I wanna hear more of that women's voice omg it was so good she needs a full Version
Young's voice is awesome, between him and Anna, his is just sounds so overwhelmingly powerful. I enjoyed this bit so much, was happy to find this version in spotify
Pirate Metal is always excellent, and this is truly fantastic! Well done all around!
They recruited a viking into their crew- The greatest crew on the Seven Seas
I have listened to this masterpiece at LEAST 30 times. I'd never heard of the song before and it may have replaced "Drunken Sailor" as my favorite "pirate" ditty. Everything from the vocals to the tempo gives me happy goosebumps.
Oh I just know this one's gonna be another banger. Keep up the good work Jonathan!
I thought the line was "Napoleon of the West they say". Since the original shanty was referring to Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna(Santiana), who was Military Dictator of Mexico for the first quarter of the 1800s. Famous in the U.S. namely for his role in attempting to suppress the Texan War of Independence and his resistance of U.S. Armies under Winfield Scott in the Mexican-American War.
Thats because is is Napoleon. Dont know where tha Yan nonsense came from.
I thought it was "Napoleon" too, but I looked up the lyrics and I guess I was wrong.
yepp, perhaps they used the lyrics you get from just googling "Santiana lyrics"? Those lyrics aren't very reliable though hence the issue? Idk man but i noticed it aswell and thought i might give input :)
It's also "gained *the* day" as in won victory in battle.
@@jonathanymusic Google's auto generated lyrics do say yan for some reason (Despite that not being a part of a ship or anything, but sure) but the Longest John's actual lyrics that they write themselves say Napoleon of the West.
I never thought i needed to hear metal versions of my favorite sea shanties until these collabs were made!
I'm so glad Richaad has veen singing more, he was hiding one of his best instruments from the world.
Jon you are my favourite heavy metal pirate. You made my day with my favourite sea shanty going to add this to apple music library. Wish i could see you and Caleb preform in Dallas but i’m swamped with work maybe next time matey. You guys did a very glorious job with one as always follow the stars and they shall lead you to treasure. Peace and best of wishes Jonny.
I like to think that the reason Caleb isn’t here is because he’s sailing the ship
This song will always have a special place in my heart. This was the song I sang to my 16 year old cat who was suffering from kidney failure as I gave her iv fluids. Hearing my voice calmed her down enough so that I was able to do this Thus giving her a few more months as we made preparations for the inevitable. Of course I sang the long to the longest John's version of the song but this cover me lads fills my sails with wind and my heart with hope and pride for the sailing ahead ❤️ 💙
I sing sea shanties to my children whenever they are sick.
It was a special moment when my oldest son joined me in singing. Life is good.
It's always hard dealing with the final days of a beloved pets life. I have a 14 year old, blind and deaf Pug, so I hear ya.
I think this is the first time I've heard Santianna all the way through and not just in a medley. Loving it!!!!!
Does anyone else get that feeling of your chest about to explode from pure awesomeness when listening to epic songs like these?
This gives me a whole new appreciation for Shanties, for if weren't for their existence, we wouldn't have this masterpiece 😁👏👏👏👏
Hi, i'm french and i'm a big fan !!! In french this song is " Santiano ". 😁💪🤘
Hissez-hooo !

C'est pas hissez haut, genre hisser le drapeau haut ?

Kind of hard to go slow in a rock truck when listening to this!! All time favorite right here!!!!!!!
Женский вокал в шанти - вот чего нам всегда не хватало! И это потрясающе!!))
We be makin it out the harbor with this one lads!!
THIS IS GLORIOUS!
Also, it’s “Napoleon of the west”.
You guys work so well together. I'd love to see you guys create a band one day
We need a live video of all these legends singing this
Outstanding work.
I believe it's supposed to be "'Napoleon of the West' they say."
Now pull the yan
@@littlewinge I don't wanna pull the Yan, regardless of cardinal direction! It's disgusting!
It's absolutely supposed to be Napoleon of the West. It's about Antonio López de Santa Anna, who was called Napoleon of the West
Definitely supposed to be that, lol. I was reading along and stopped up short when I saw that. A brief bit of googling doesn't show any part of a traditional ship having a part called the yan, and it's in reference to a guy who was literally called Napoleon of the West.
Never clicked on a UA-cam notification so fast!
Same
Dude, what have you guys done to me?! I can't stop coming back to this song! It has been on repeat for two days straight and i'm not getting tired of it!
"Captain, it looks awfully rocky out there!"
"That's the point, me lad!"
As a hiphop head mainly but I can appreciate talent when I hear it. Man, the way you guys added something unique to this song. I mean each member just showed they enjoyed doing this. You guys have a new fan for sure.
The female vocalist has a familiar soulful like voice also.
WOW! I'm blown away. This is amazing, your voices are all so damn good. I feel like this perfectly captures the slightly mournful feel of Santiana while turning it METAL! \m/
I fell in love with this collab, and even more with this music. I've become addicted to that cover the day it was published.
Amazing work, pirates!
Holy cow, now that is some art. Stumbled upon this gem searching for sea shanty medly. Felt like they were all lacking in something; THIS is it 🎉
I'm French and when I was younger, I went trought a vocal test on this song. I always have the French version on some playlist so it have a special spot in my heart. My poor little brain was confused at first (and everytime I have heard SantianA) but I get used to it and I was totaly lost on the song. Great vocal as always and such amazing arrangement. You're all very talented. I love Sea chantries, I love your work and metal, so when you put all the three together it's just a explosion of spark and happiness. Thanks you very much that's awesome!
I would love to hear someone with your voices singing that song in french, the french version sound so good and in a metal vibe QOFIUSBZF it'll be so damn good, great job guys keep going !!
plot twist they all know french and post a French version.
that was what i was thinking about, is Santianna a "rip off" of the original French song or is it the other way around ?
@@Jager_and_son The French version you're thinking of came from the 1960s and tells a completely different story. This song dates to the mid-1800s in one form or another.
And if you're thinking of the one that The Longest Johns and Justine Galmiche did, that's a combination of the French song and Leave Her, Johnny.
@@RealRaynedance k thx for the info
@@Jager_and_son Worth noting the one in French is also more than likely older than the 1960s, but the _popular_ version is from the 1960s. And you're welcome :D
I can't believe you got Colm on this! beautiful collaboration!
Once again, I find a new artist I like from these Sea Shanties, Peyton has a really great voice. Fantastic work again.
All of you are truly talented to turn great songs into something beyond magnificent I can't wait to see you do the same for songs like wellerman, Spanish ladies, off to sea, and old maui
This is TYR's "Ragnar's Kvædi" level of traditional turned metal. This is amazing. Well done, Jonathan!
Everyone here is so incredibly talented. But when Colm sings the last ‘away we’ll go’ at 3:25-3:30, and slides down an entire octave with the word ‘go’…I feel it so viscerally. You know, in that raw place between my heart and stomach.
It’s hard to explain but…anyone out there feel me?
Love these little Sea Shanty songs great vocals by all well done.
To bad Caleb wasn't in this lol
Caleb who? What about Dan vac to tho
He died of scurvy during Randy-Dandy-Oh
@@RevelationsPrimo daymn dawg haha

I looooove hearing annapantsu in these !!
Came for Peyton Parrish...left with a new song which I am sure will hit Top 5 in my Spotify 2024 Top songs and new passion for sea shanty metal songs! What an awesome job from all of you!
I didn't know Colm would sound so good in METAL.
This is EPIC.
One of my favorite Sea Shanties in EPIC Metal.
This was worth watching as soon as i saw the notification.
Was literally singing this to myself when this got posted. The timing and quality are sublime.
This is by far my favourite version of this! Shivers me timbers it does!
Good I would kill for a girl with a voice like Anna- what a gift, and what a turn on. Being able to have so much energy and power, while still having beauty and grace…
It’s my favorite part of the whole song.
A black ship rises from the horizon, sharp metal lines the curves.
Braizers hold flames as they carry to god knows where.
This is the song they hear as they travel faster than most vessels.
Slight nitpick is that the line is "Napoleon of the west they say" not "Now pull the yan up the west they say". It's still a great cover though!
I always thought the lyrics was "Napoleon of the west" speaking of Santiana as a ruthless foe.
Thats because it is Napoleon.
The Flying Dutchman feels like the obvious next step from here, I mean it is so easy to metalize!
Ok so now I have another book idea : a group of bard pretending to be pirates going on adventure because hired for a quest
Yet another song where I’m so mad at myself for taking this long to discover this absolute masterpiece of music. It’s so good!!!!
I really love how you almost grawl on your part Jon ! You all did a fantastic job on this one! :D
Love the music, and the covers. Think you'd ever cover a song from Quest for Camelot?
I would like to second this question
A third
Fourth
OMG QUEST FOR CAMELOT YESSSS!!!!!!!!!!!
yesssss
As a Santiano fan I see this as a win
The English version, sung by a cool crew, is really great !
For the French: "C'est un fameux trois-mâts fin comme un oiseau...!"
Hissez hauuuut! Santianooo!
Must've listened to this song atleast 100 times since it's release now, can't stop getting goosebumps over how amazing this song is.. Amazingly inspiring work, can't thank you enough for making all my days better with this!
Love anna. Her voice makes me feel very epic
"Napoleon of the West, they say. Along the plains of Mexico"
Se me hace rarísimo encontrar un Sea Shanty que se refiera a López de Santa Anna, pero suena perrón. En fin, de todo hay y cuando se hace bien salen cosas como ésta. ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Already loved the version Colm did, this one is equally amazing!
If orcs and dwarves made a band
This was the cover I never knew I needed tysm
Ty for this dude it brought back so many childhood memories it was magic
Never in my life has YT made a better recommendation. I need you to record every shanty ever known in the history of ever.

Oh my... That one... The voices, the rework, the fucking insane mix with so much crystal clear low end...
You made my tears go out of control !
I never felt that in yeaaaars listening to music...
Damn it was good...
YES JON!! I'VE BEEN PATIENTLY WAITING! And such a good group too!
I love the art. I discovered this song today and have listened about 7 times now.
I thought for a moment I was listening Sabaton. Such epic sound, such roaring voice. Your legend becomes greater, Captain Young /../,
Napoleon of the west written as "now pull the yan of the west" gave me a good laugh. Thank you for this great version!
Time to absolutely BLAST this and play sea of thieves with the bois!!!!!
Sea shanty metal…just something that needs to be on the workout playlist.
