History behind this song: “Santana” is a slang for Santa Anna, a Mexican General/President/Dictator (full name Antonio López de Santa Anna) This is a folk song, originally in French, turned into sea shanty, and modified throughout the years. (suspected by British, and later American sailors) It dates back to at least 1850 and is a Ahistorical tale about the Battle of ether Monterrey or Molino del Rey(anglicized as ‘Molly del Rey’) depending on who is singing. It’s ahistorical because in the song “Santana gained the day” or “Taylor ran away”(Zachary Taylor, the American general in those battles). In reality the Americans won those battles. The British are suspected to be the ones to come up with the shanty (though the melody is from the French song) because Anglo-American relations were never good until the late 1800’s. Also funny enough, the Americans found the song catchy and added to it. “And a boastful Yank for a captain too!”
