Gotta love how RE 4 on paper sounded like it would be the worst thing ever, being a game that would completely upend the formula of the RE series by not featuring zombies, changing up the core gameplay, having a bunch of cheesy dialogue, a nonsensical plot, while also dialling down the horror, yet it ended up being one of the greatest games of all time.
I remember when it was announced… It was like a 50/50 split on who was excited for it and those who felt like it was a betrayal from what RE was “supposed to be” as a survival horror experience. Then it launched, and everyone couldn’t get enough of this game, and here we are nearly 20 years later and people are still gushing about it. I think it’s a cult classic at this point. Cannot wait until the remake comes out.
Dialing down the horror? No, I don't think so. More like homages of the best horrors. From John Carpenter's The Thing to other legends like: Jaws, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Evil Dead 2, 28 Days/Weeks Later, Dracula, hell even The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. There's a bit of Lovecraftian horror too. RE4 is horror to the very last bit, it might not be too much on the surviving part, but horror? Yes, definitely.
I first played this when it released in 2005 and just finished it again recently and I'm astounded at how well it held up even 17 years later. Awesome deep dive into one of the most influential games of all time!

So you mean to tell me Devil May Cry was an RE4 prototype? That's some wild shit! I wound up playing RE4 around 2011, long after it had already been released. It still delivered incredibly well. It felt like the last good resident evil game in some ways, for about a decade.
3.5 was the prototype , no re4 (2005) . dmc1 out on (2001) & exists many re titles between them. code veronica (2000's more similar) , outbreaks ,dead aim, etc.

I can replay re4 every year and it holds up so well, the constant progression of new set pieces, the level design, the upgrade system and inventory management, every aspect of the game is designed to be fun and and satisfying to learn and master. I started with the original re in 1996 and I still love and prefer the classic fixed camera era over the newer style, but RE4 is still my favorite of the series and probably will always be

With horror gaming franchises like Silent Hill and Fatal Frame being left in the dark for some time, it’s surprising how the Resident Evil franchise still lives up, especially with RE4, despite its many ups and downs. And with RE4 remake coming out in a few months, let’s hope it continues on living.

It's not survival horror tho. Mikami said it was designed to be an action game. RE 4, 5 and 6 are all action games. Silent hill 2 and RE1 remake are what survival horror mean.
I love quiet slow and moody atmosphere of a psychological horror and would normally prefer it over action any day, but RE4 is an amazing game and my personal favorite RE. And, to be honest, it didnt really pick between mood and action. Its an amazing achievement of being able to do both extremely well. I can grin with confidence as i mow down the zombies, hold my breath as i soak in the creepy and dark atmosphere of a rainy night in the village, laugh with leon's cheesy lines, and shake in my boots at the regenerator lair. She can do it ALL. Legend.
RE 4 reminds me alot of Blood which came out in 1997 as in that game you also take on a cult as a badass with one liners and one of the main line enemies are hooded cultists with firearms that throw dynamite at you. There's also zombies with axes and your melee weapon is a pitchfork. More recently in Cultic, the spiritual successor to Blood you fight hooded cultists with both firearms and axes, plus the pistol you get is a c96 mauser.
While i may not loved how it changed survival horror , i am thankful cause it continued the franchise I love the game and its unique in its own way My love for the old style etc. will always stay stronger but RE4 has and will always have a place in my heart That been said good video mate !
Didn't expect that you dived this much into the development of this single game, this is another proof that if there was a master's degree in the RE franchise, you would be a straight-A graduate student. But seriously, there is always a tough road for the developers who want their franchise to become the childhood memory of several generations of players. Resident Evil 4 holds a special place in my heart, I got it for my 15th birthday and it was my first rated M game I have ever played and beaten all the way through. I still have my PS2 copy of the game to this day.
RE4 really altered my memories by a large amount, I remember seeing its gameplay while I was in another country with a relative, fell in love with some of the characters, watched YT videos of them and so on.
RE4 didn't invent the 3rd-Person shooter, as there were other games that did that, but what RE4 did accomplish was make the over the shoulder camera angle mainstream, which is itself a major feat. Also, its mind-blowing to me how Mikami was able to build & finish RE4 within 2-years. That is astounding considering how polished the game is. Also, RE4 almost didn't become the powerhouse that it did on the gamecube, as its sales were disappointing to Capcom. RE4 was supposed to be a gamecube exclusive but Capcom ported it over to the PS2 to increase its sales. The gamecube at the time just didn't have a large installed base. Had Capcom not ported the game over to PS2, the series might have ended with 4. BTW, I still have my gamecube & copy of RE4. The game was way ahead of its time. Also, if you haven't played it, then I would recommend the game, "The Evil Within." Its not as good as RE4, but it is also a creation of Mikami. Its essentially very similar, but with a more whacky plot but overall has the same mechanics.

There are 3 types of games that I play. I call it the Bethesda Effect and I'll give examples thusly. 1: Games that I want to play and will enjoy playing for a few hours - Oblivion. 2: Games that I want to play, but find myself getting bored quickly - Skyrim. 3: Games that I don't feel like playing, but find myself enjoying it once I start - Morrowind. RE4 is square in that 3rd category. Mercenaries is still killer and the double chainsaw man still haunts my soul.

I've played all the classic RE games, ever since I was just a youngin' (kids, amirite?), and I can tell you this much; The issues with people not liking RE4 due to it "ditching the original formula" is that it's assuming that original formula was ever as good as the one introduced in RE4. I hate to say this, but RE1-3 will never be as iconic as RE4 is, simply due to the fact that RE4's design is timeless in itself... The gameplay, the level design, the control, the dialogue, the setting, the music, etc. It's the definitive Resident Evil experience because it's not strictly horror-based, but horror action. The original games had been trying to do that for years prior to RE4's release; They attempted to make a game about horror that also happened to have heart-pounding action sequences, forcing you to not only think about resource management, but also strategizing location. The fixed camera angles definitely hampered this, yes, but wasn't the ONLY issue those games had impeding on their progress to success... It was also the strict ammunition management, existing solely to make it seem as if the games were more in tune to horror than action... But, really, they weren't. The games were holding you back to give the illusion of it being a horror game, without ever actually going all-in on a proper horror approach. One of horror's most iconic traits is how helpless you feel in a terrifying situation. That's a building block of a horror game. RE1-3 didn't have any of this, opting to give you plenty of options to deal with any and all problems that came your way, whilst simultaneously not putting nearly enough of it around to still make it seem like it was somehow "scary". RE1-3 had a serious identity crisis... RE4 did not. It embraced its action horror to the fullest. Dino Crisis was sort of the beginning of this downward slope for the Survival Horror genre; The game had all these extremely powerful enemies to deal with, and almost never enough ammunition to deal with them, forcing you to mix chemicals to create the absolutely OP Poison Darts, that simply auto-kill anything it hits that isn't a boss, breaking the flow of gameplay, as well as the game's internal balance. Dino Crisis 2 would deal away with all of this, still keeping its fixed camera angles, and was a huge success when it came out because it, too, embraced action horror. TL;DR - RE4's an iconic game because it's not afraid to be what it was meant to be... An action horror video game about absolutely destroying entire hordes of horrifying enemies that still give you chills, whilst also allowing you thrills. It's more akin to Michael Jackson's Thriller than it is Night of the Living Dead; It's meant to be fun, not overly dire and serious. P.S.: Shoutouts to Parasite Eve 2 for starting the action horror trend alongside Dino Crisis 2. Seriously, if you're into games like that, give that game a shot. It's absolutely nothing like the first game. Edit: Feel like I need to also mention how Resident Evil Zero effectively murdered the original RE style with a giant axe. Seriously... Wtf were they thinking with that game? "Let's bring back a dated, clearly unconventional inventory method that got scrapped for valid reasons for RE1... For REZero... Get it...? Because it comes before RE1? Aren't we hilarious?!"

Man to think i was a kid when my sisters dad let me play this fkr the first time, he even had the chainsaw remote!! It was the coolest thing ive played at that time and sparked my interest in (what i considered as a kid) horror games im so grateful i got to play this gem
The third build feels like it could've been what we got with the Evil Within series, taking a psychological approach instead. Would've been interesting but at the same time, it would've been too "other worldly," for my taste back then. I'm glad we got the build that we did.
re 4 and 5 where both masterpieces i mean every thing action wise from 5 was taken from 4 and i loved the co op But for kinda wen away from the BOWs and zombies RE 5 brought that back and even had lickers and was suppose to have a tyrant id have to say i like em both the same . wish They remake REzero with co op with New Engine and the Out breaks :

RE1-3 didn't have any of this, opting to give you plenty of options to deal with any and all problems that came your way, whilst simultaneously not putting nearly enough of it around to still make it seem like it was somehow "scary". RE1-3 had a serious identity crisis... RE4 did not. It embraced its action horror to the fullest.
Dino Crisis was sort of the beginning of this downward slope for the Survival Horror genre; The game had all these extremely powerful enemies to deal with, and almost never enough ammunition to deal with them, forcing you to mix chemicals to create the absolutely OP Poison Darts, that simply auto-kill anything it hits that isn't a boss, breaking the flow of gameplay, as well as the game's internal balance. Dino Crisis 2 would deal away with all of this, still keeping its fixed camera angles, and was a huge success when it came out because it, too, embraced action horror.
TL;DR - RE4's an iconic game because it's not afraid to be what it was meant to be... An action horror video game about absolutely destroying entire hordes of horrifying enemies that still give you chills, whilst also allowing you thrills. It's more akin to Michael Jackson's Thriller than it is Night of the Living Dead; It's meant to be fun, not overly dire and serious.
P.S.: Shoutouts to Parasite Eve 2 for starting the action horror trend alongside Dino Crisis 2. Seriously, if you're into games like that, give that game a shot. It's absolutely nothing like the first game.
Edit: Feel like I need to also mention how Resident Evil Zero effectively murdered the original RE style with a giant axe. Seriously... Wtf were they thinking with that game? "Let's bring back a dated, clearly unconventional inventory method that got scrapped for valid reasons for RE1... For REZero... Get it...? Because it comes before RE1? Aren't we hilarious?!"

I liked resident evil 4 but I'd have to say resident evil 5 was my favorite out of them all. The amount of hours and fun I put in just mercenaries alone
Man to think i was a kid when my sisters dad let me play this fkr the first time, he even had the chainsaw remote!! It was the coolest thing ive played at that time and sparked my interest in (what i considered as a kid) horror games im so grateful i got to play this gem
pressure is defo on for the remake.
The third build feels like it could've been what we got with the Evil Within series, taking a psychological approach instead. Would've been interesting but at the same time, it would've been too "other worldly," for my taste back then. I'm glad we got the build that we did.
Compared with other games from it time period it looked stunning and even today it’s aged pretty well

re 4 and 5 where both masterpieces i mean every thing action wise from 5 was taken from 4 and i loved the co op But for kinda wen away from the BOWs and zombies RE 5 brought that back and even had lickers and was suppose to have a tyrant id have to say i like em both the same . wish They remake REzero with co op with New Engine and the Out breaks :

The supernatural build actually looks pretty close to Fatal Frame.
RE4 is timeless. Even the Ps2 version is still a blast to play. As excited as I am for the remake, I'm also very skeptical about it as the game Is still modern enough (!) To not need a remake.
