- Опубліковано 28 лис 2024
- Resident Evil 4 went through 4 cancelled builds before startubg from scratch again with director Shinji Mikami taking the lead in developing what was to revolutionize the series. But at the same time, the game changed throughout the stage a ton and even went through much drama in a GameCube exclusivity deal that was about to give out and go multiplatform. Today we explore its cut content and complete history
Note that this is a compilation of two RE4 Cut Content videos

Fix notes:
Code Veronica as RE3 discrepancy: Unfortunately early in the video there is an error that Code Veronica was being penned as RE3 but not given that number due to it being on the Dreamcast. While my source was IGN (back when it was more credible), there has been a several sources from various interviews that seem to refute this belief that many have held for years. I plan to make a video that explains this much better but for now, you may read further about that here (sources at the bottom of that page) bioredqueeneffect.wordpress.com/2023/02/14/why-codeveronica-is-still-mistaken-as-having-been-resident-evil-3/
Good stuff dude. I’ll delete my comment so that there’s no misconceptions about the truthfulness of the rest of the video. I thoroughly enjoyed it was very well made.
@@SD_Stef Thank you very much! and thank you and others who brought that to my attention :)
I was one of the first people to buy the game on opening sales on the GameCube and I played the two disk set and I actually back in the day had a record of 2 hours 14 minutes and only one save because you had to save on the GameCube to get the disc do no deaths know anything you just play the game as it is and this was before that one glitch apparently that you could skip the minecart ride and everything else I played the game 100% and got 2 hours and 14 minutes
Shinji “I will cut my head off!“ proceeds to port it to literally everything ever made
Its why in the game godhand one of the racing dogs you can bet on is named "mikamis head" after shini mikarmis quote
Well Capcom did. Shinji didn't want it ported.
Thank god it was ported
even to the zeebo
"Get in the fucking Playstation Shinji"
Fun Fact: there was supposed to be an RE game set in Feudal Japan for the N64 DD that later became the Onimusha series
Onimusha would be a fun series to make a video on. This kinda has inspired me.
@TheObsessiveGamer awesome! If you need the reference look at Ultra Game Players issue 100 for a section that says "Resident Evil 64" about a Ninja Version
I do not recall that at all.
@@edward18517 Sphere Hunter even said it in her Onimusha video, plus it's in a magazine
@@guardianbeardizer6361 huh...I'm not sure how i never heard of Sengoku Biohazard before, but it feels like it was meant to be more of a side-thing so that might be why. The whole scenario of a ninja biohazard in feudal Japan is just...kind of weird sounding if it's to be taken as a serious entry in the timeline.
As a little extra: When one of the prototypes got datamined on TCRF they discovered 3 congratulatory images from the "hookman" build of RE 3.5. All of these presumably come from an internal demo and they feature (an infected) Leon, the umbrella girl and her dog in Christmas costumes, and a close-up of the hookman enemy.
It's pretty interesting to see character visuals from this part of Resi4 development.
Oh? Is this recent? I gotta check it out!
@@TheObsessiveGamer Yeah, it's at the very end of the "Proto:Resident Evil 4 (GameCube)" page on TCRF, under "Miscellaneous".
@@sabo-vf3xj ooooh new stuff. Much appreciate this
I hope they put new emimes they missing
The umbrella girl and her dog was actually conpleted as the ps2 game "haunting ground" and infact the dog model from that game was used in re4 for the dog you rescue from the bear trap and it helps you fight el gigante later, that was in reference to how haunting ground started out as a build of re4.
The game itself was actually more like a cross between classic resident evil and the horror series clocktower.
I didn’t know the Ruins were originally meant to be in RE 3.5 Castle Build, that’s so cool. I hope Capcom has the original notes from RE5 for the remake, so they can use some of their original ideas, like they did with RE2make and RE4make. I’d love to see the origins of Umbrella and Spencer rediscovered in RE5make.
Yeah this. I really would love to see that expanded upon further. I feel it was a missed boat in RE5
I don't remember them doing much with concepts from the originals for the remakes (other than putting a hat on the T-103 (which I'm surprised they didn't go with a gas mask since that's what they drew it with more)).
They weren’t the progenitor virus at this point was suppose to be discovered from an ancient corpse in the basement of Oswald e Spencer
@@TheObsessiveGamerThe Lost In Nightmares DLC’s entire map is actually from the resident evil 3.5 hookman demo, theres three versions of it in RE5’s files, i only know one version is the original 3.5 version, and the reworked LiN version, dont remember if theres anything different with the 3rd version.
@@czahnnunh2263 ohhh that is interesting
Well something to look into for when I do an RE5 video
The most interesting thing about these demos is that a LOT of elements actually made it to the final game. Like a fully explorable Castle, living armours, Ashley and Leon working together...
It was a Interative development process.
man i would be the happiest man alive if capcom revisited the castle or hookman builds of the game, or released them as demos to preserve history. these games look too good to be gamecube games

Thanks for the video, greetings from Belgium in Europe.
Thank you! And yeah as one of my fav games I just had to make it
Very complete, informative and professional video, thank you.
Btw I'll never surpass the "exclusive" being the most ported game ever lmao.
Thank you! Took alot of research to properly compile
And yeah hella ironic lol
Greatest game ever made, no questions asked.
Thank you for making a video analysis on my 2nd fav game!!! I actually didn’t know that the development of RE4 basically created two different games, I knew about DMC tho
0:54 "Code: Veronica" was never meant to be RE3, it was always going to be a non-numbered entry for the Dreamcast: it was born after Capcom told Sega they couldn't do a satisfactory port of RE2 for the Saturn. Quite interestingly, it was originally going to feature Jill as the lead. The real RE3 was a game that was never publicly unveiled about Hunk on a cruise ship: it wasn't an "alternative sequel to RE2". Capcom has actually denied the whole "Sony limited exclusivity deal".
5:00 Tony Redgrave didn't use "demonic weapons": when DMC was RE4, combat was still going to be centered around firearms and Tony had more guns than Dante ended up having. One such weapon was a laser gun that was actually found in DMC's code, though it doesn't work. Another gun was a shoulder-mounted cannon Tony was going to use at the end against the final boss, essentially replacing the rocket launcher from RE1 and RE2's Tyrant fight. The mystical melee weapons were introduced once the game stopped being a Resident Evil entry.
13:43 The "Castle Build" was going to be a regular RE game with BOWs and zombies. You can actually glimpse a zombie in the "Hookman" trailer from 2003 (Hookman was never a real build, more like the devs messing around with the assets from "Castle"). The "Zombie build" was actually all about the dabamen (the proto-ganados): the original idea was for the game to feel like John Carpenter's "The Thing", where at first you couldn't tell wether or not a NPC was human. Things evolved from there.
I love anything related to Resident Evil 4 .. this channel is like a goldmine for me , I MUST SUBSCRIBE immediately ❤
Thank you very much! :)
8:10 ahhh, I see how Haunting Ground was made
Actually. The original Resident Evil 3 (the one the was later called Code Veronica) was going to have Jill as protagonist from the beginning, not Claire, there is even artwork of Jill's appearance for that game.
It was when (as you say) Capcom was "forced" to make RE3 for the PlayStation that they decided to keep Jill for the sequel, and then use Claire for the now spin off Code Veronica. But Jill was destined from the very beginning to become RE3 protagonist.
The Jill one was RE1.9, that was a different game all together. The Hunk game by Kamiya was always designated as the original RE3
Actually, from what i recall from an interview with Kazuhiro Aoyama, 1.9 (the game that became 3) originally was about the three mercenaries before Jill was put into the game (back then NIcholai and Mikhail were brothers).
@@edward18517 Interesting. Well it's what i'll need to look into once I get to covering the history for those games
@@TheObsessiveGamertbh i strongly believe resident evil revelations was based on that hunk on a ship plan, since in the first trailer hunk is featured and hes the only other character outside if jill, chris and fake chris. Plus the setting and how its the bsaa instead of whoever hunk is working for
@@AquaFan1998 ohh that's a good theory. Won't surprise me if they decided to reuse that storyline later
Resident evil 4 whether it has divide the fandom, the game itself is truly special.
I desperately wanna play and know the story behind the the hallucination build and infected Leon’s story honestly sounds way more interesting than what we got
It was way more interesting. 4's final version as a Resident Evil game is just garbage compared to pretty much any of the beta versions. For Hallucination's story though it's just Castle's story pretty much. The Hallucination phase was essentially just them testing how game mechanics would work by a later phase of it.
The Hallucination build looked so cool I love the aesthetic
Enjoyed the video. Good work. It kills me that these earlier builds are likely just lost to time unless capcom magically held onto those dev kits.
I bet they are in the Capcom archives somewhere. Hopefully they one day show us more in some making of doc
Nice man can't wait for your next cut content video
Thank you! Should be next week :)
Mikami was upset with the PS2 hardware being complicated to work and went with the GameCube. Not cause of DVDs on PS2.
Worst decision ever.
It’s interesting how much of RE4’s unused idea made their way into RE5
Yeah honestly. I am glad the secrets of umbrella were explored eventually
Capcom's biggest mistake will always be to cuck Ozwell Spencer (the true antagonist of the series, the Emperor Palpatine of RE) and cowardly evade the final showdown against Umbrella every fan wanted, just to kill him in a pathetic fashion in RE5 by an out of character Wesker turned into Wish version of Liquid Snake.
Well Wesker always was about evolution and destroying the unworthy and all that.
@@edward18517 Yeah, but he was also cold, and very smart, however, his "master plan" was simply stupid and made no sense. I think Capcom screenwriters are some of the worst in the industry since they just follow trends and have no vision for their own series. Look at the zillions of plot holes and retcons of RE, Mega Man, Street Fighter, etc. At that time they thought Metal Gear Solid was cool, so they tried to copy the series, from the "Wesker Children" to Wesker acting like Walmart's Liquid Snake for no other reason than to copy another series. They did it also in Code Veronica, turning Wesker into a Terminator-like guy with Matrix powers because it was trendy. It is a shame, how they disgraced their best villain. Ada suffered a similar less shameful fate, of course, they just can't let her die in peace, that sweet sweet fan service. It reminds me of how Heroes destroyed Sylar because they didn't have the guts to kill him in the first season as was already planned.
@@petitemasque5784 How did his "Master Plan" make no sense? It's what Wesker had always been aiming to do. Enact forced evolution for humanity and mass genocide for those that weren't compatible.
And I'd say Code Veronica is arguably his best appearance. Prior to that he was basically just a lamer Nicholai in terms of what he did and how he acted.
As for Mega Man, what plot holes are you talking about?
I’m still mad that Umbrella gets destroyed offscreen. That was so dumb.
They might remedy some of that with the (rumoured) re5 remake, though I don't have high hopes for a better Spencer sendoff.
One cannot truly understate how incredible this game actually is. It's hard to believe it's a real piece of media. This game actually gives me appreciation for existence no joke. I've been intrigued by this game since I was 4 years old watching my older brothers play it. The affect this game has had on my existence is fucking unreal. I've probably beaten the game over 15 times at this point and I've been watching youtube videos on it since like 2012 and I still cannot get enough of it. I cannot wait to have kids of my own and hand this gem down to them. Showing this game to someone who has never played it is always a treat and never gets old. I have vivid memories of my cousins coming over and us staying up real late into the night playing this game. They cried when they had to leave because they didn't finish the game. Has to be my favorite game of all time. Thank you for this video. You made my night.
imagine ditching sony over a dvd player
How simpler times were before Xbox was all "TV TV TV TV TV TV"
Jarring to think this happened at all in retrospect lol
It came across to me like he didn't actually understand how the hardware functions on consoles. I personally believe that Sony and Microsoft's consoles having more usage than just playing games on gives them more appeal and utility than making it just machines to play video games on. The Nintendo Switch may have portability; however, if you want to play movie disc or stream, you'd be better off using anything else.
I also find it extremely ironic that Resident Evil 4 is one of the most ported games where only niche or minor alterations were made with the Wii and being the "most extreme" change when ported, unless you count the smartphone version, which I don't think was technically even a port.
About that "I will cut my head off" comment. Iirc he instead stated that he would commit harakiri if he went against his words which he clearly hasn't done yet, and I'm still waiting for that to happen to this day.
I think Capcom took inspiration from 2 ps1 games which were RE clones, 1) Countdown vampires, because they took the same idea of a "cool" protagonist, that kills monsters and vampires and can transform into a demon, and 2) The Vampire Hunter D videogame for the ps1, they took the idea of a castle, the melee with swords and the absorbing energy from enemies,... wouldn´t surprise me that Re teams would take from their own clones as those took from them., Code Veronica was very influenced by Alone in the Dark the new nightmare, which was a big project back then., the Twins concept was very alone in the dark
I'm pretty sure Tony is just a continuation of how things were progressing for RE. The entire concept of the series is about experimenting into evolution and Tony's "Devil Trigger" form bears a red eye like Wesker had in Code Veronica.
So sad that mikami doesn’t have a head anymore.
I am so used to playing the Wii Edition version of Resident Evil 4. It is probably my favorite version of RE4 with Resident Evil 4 Remake being tied with it.
As much as I love the PlayStation 2, it was a bit underpowered compared to the GameCube. However, that proprietary disc that the GameCube used really neutered the storage sizes for games, which was appropriately 1.5 GB at most compared to the PS2's that ranged from 4.7 to 8.5 GB.
With DMC being born out of RE4, I kinda wish they could reuse the combat system of RE6 into a DMC spinoff as a human devilhunter.
These Videos are awesome
Thank you! :)
Fun fact, I love Resident Evil
10:47 I wonder if that talking decapitated Killer7 head/Susie Sumner is meant to be a running gag by Suda51 & Shinji Mikami
There have been talks about if that was the intent the whole time lol
I just now realized that you are the obsessive gamer not the observative gamer lol.
I do wonder
If exclusivity for the numbered titles did remain on the GameCube
Would that have allowed for a typical fixed camera resi 2 and 3 remake for the GameCube like they did with resi 1 and 0
Well, no wonder why I also love Devil May Cry haha I love Resident Evil games and knowing that this is how Devil May Cry was born makes me very happy 💜
It's probably the reason why I got so much into Devil May Cry in the first place. The fixed cameras and setting really eased me in lol
For the record, Ganado does NOT translate to livestock, it translates to "gained" or "enlightened"
Ganado does indeed translate to livestock
Greetings from venezuela
TBH I kinda found it sucked how Ashley lost her BOW dog and became kinda cowardly, let alone unusable but oh well XD
I never knew that was a thing. O.O
Awesome things that will never happen:
Allowing players to quick swap between 4 different weapons and items Via the D-Pad. (Just like in RE5)
I feel the 2023 Remake shot down any hopes I had for such an improvement in the Classic RE4.
Still wish we had gotten the castle version instead of RE4.
I've wished that ever since 4 originally came out.
I’m gonna be real
Capcom should make an alternate timeline based on their betas
3.5 has always seemed like a promising survival horror title even if it’s more supernatural than zombie like
But that’s why an alternate timeline would be good for that, you could do anything basically, even kill off the main characters
Well it's not really "supernatural". Leon's hallucinating, that's science-based.
There's a lot of misinformation in this video, like the CV = RE3 nonsense.
Yeah, I'm never sure who to believe when this talk point comes up.
The problem is the way you're interpreting what I said here.
First off, they indeed were making 3 games simultaneously with 2 sequels. CV being one of them. But since it was on the DC, they decided not to give that one the numbered title. It's that simple.
Second, here is a source: www.ign.com/articles/2009/03/11/ign-presents-the-history-of-resident-evil?page=3
Third, even if you don't like that source I would like a direct source trying to refute that and if that does give a clear refutation, I'll make an update in the pinned comments.
@@TheObsessiveGamer I've tried multiple times to post links here but the comments keep disappearing.
They briefly considered making CV into RE4 during the original RE3's move from PS1 to PS2, before it was automatically renamed RE4. So being on the Dreamcast wasn't really a factor behind whether it would be numbered, all they knew for certain was that 1-3 would be on the PS1, the undisputed dominator in sales that generation. It was just good business. There were no exclusivity contracts.
@@ProjectumbrellaNet send me the link via Twitter then. This place can be weird.
Also I agree on that there, however when both hunk and CV games were planned, neither had the RE3 number to them both just thought as sequels. By putting CV on Dreamcast, that sealed it's fate is the idea. This all being before a single line of code likely was written.
Also I appreciate the civil approach here :)
@@TheObsessiveGamerThe HUNK game was always RE3, it was in pre-production by November 1997, before RE2 even released. It was directed by Masaaki Yamada with Hideki Kamiya as chief planner and newly-hired Atsushi Inaba as producer. When it was moved to the PS2, Kamiya was made director based on RE2's success. It eventually became Devil May Cry.
CV began production in February 1998 right after RE2's release as an apology to SEGA fans for scrapping RE2's Saturn port. Being on the Dreamcast had no impact on whether CV had a number as it was never going to be RE3, so there was no issue. It could've easily been RE4, but circumstances and their own preferences made them keep it as CV since it represented it being new and different.
That all said, CV's director Hiroki Kato did once say that since CV began production before RE3 Last Escape, he regarded CV as 3, because he had no involvement with the Ship RE3 being made at the same time by a different team. CV was 99% outsourced, while Ship RE3 was being made in-house. That RE3 was last mentioned in an August 1998 issue of Weekly Famitsu, where Noboru Sugimura and Yoshiki Okamoto talked about its story still being on their whiteboard. It was moved to the PS2 around that same time, and that unused story about a cruise ship was recycled as Gun Survivor 4/Dead Aim.
8:14 Wait. isn't that idea ended up be Haunting Ground =]]
Keep watching... this comes up lol
9:06 boy that aged like piss lol
Kinda ironic that they were worried about resident evil straying away from survival horror only to end up with making games like RE5 which felt more like a action game than a survival horror

@@Gator159 PS2 first, then GameCube, then PS2 again. I mean the PS2 limitations made it a tough port but worked.
Oh but I did forget the GameCubes limitations were a thing for the fog build
If shinji would have stuck with putting re4 on PS2 we would've gotten The early version of RE4 since GameCube couldn't handle it.
Not likely. The Gamecube was more powerful than the PS2. It's just the technology of the time couldn't handle the stuff they were trying to do at what they deemed an acceptable level alongside wanting to do something else. The Castle Version's what would have happened though if they'd stuck with what they were doing during the later Gamecube stuff. What became Devil May Cry is probably what would have come out as 3/4 if it were finished before 2000.
28:17 i wouldnt agree. Ofc ps2 was slightly weaker than gamecube on paper but ps2 had its own complex architecture and by seeing re4 ps2 super stable fps i am sure they could get more power from ps2, but they didn't because they ported it in hurry.
I'm just glad that RE4 released on PS2 or I won't be able to enjoy this masterpiece (I didn't own a gamecube and I'm kinda not a fan of nintendo)
I am completely sure they could make better ps2 port. Ps2 is only slightly less powerful and ps2 architecture is completely diffrent. Just by looking how stable ps2 fps are you can notice it. I think they didn't make the port better because they were in hurry
Devil May Cry is cool, but I am so glad it never became a RE game!
If RE5MAKE is to happen... I think Capcom should incorporate "Lost In Nightmares," and "Desperate Escape" into the actual game, to make one long game. "Lost In Nightmares" used areas from 3.5 ; They should reimagine this as a prelude to the game, and have it star Leon, instead, as he was after Spencer. If RE5 was completely reimagined, I'm sorry, but I would love it. I got RE5 day one, on March 13th, 2009, and although I beat it many times, I hate RE5 with a passion. It's an over the top ridiculous shit show, with a pathetic forgettable storyline.
Why include it when you can sell it separately?
Of course they will 10 dollars dlc..but I'm all for it
Personally I think Lost in Nightmares should be how an RE5 Remake should start. Make it the prologue to the game. Would be an amazing opening
