  • In this week's episode we take a look at the topic of cutting/modifying cymbals. This is a pretty easy idea to get a hold of especially when you the right tools. We will talk about cutting/repairing cymbals and also more creatively cutting/modifying cymbals for effects and texturing purposes. I will go over the tools i have found helpful as well as some of the more creative ideas I have played with in making pieces to be added to or compliment my existing cymbals. As mentioned in the video I took some of the creative ideas from Reverie Drum Co. so if you like some of those ideas please give them a visit at their website and check out some of the cool products they have come up with. Good ideas! I've wondered how to repair cracked cymbals, and wish you would have played the ones you repaired. I already have two angle grinders and a dremel type tool, so I will attempt a repair, and destruction of some cheap "trash-can" cymbals, for use as special effect devices. Thanks for the video!

    Really nice sounds! The backing tracks you play on in your videos are amazing. Are they available somewhere?

    • @BeardedDrums
      @BeardedDrums  3 роки тому +1

      I use an online service called Epidemic Sound. Tons of music to select from and you can separate the tracks depending upon what you want to drop out, drums, vocals, instruments, whatever you need. The plan I am on runs about $15 a month and it gives me unlimited downloads and the ability to use them on UA-cam. It is kind of specific, you have to tell them where you were going to be uploading these tracks to which will affect the price as well as the size of the audience that might see them. For example I can really only use these tracks on UA-cam. I cannot upload them to Facebook or Instagram, I would have to pay for a different plan. But in the context that I use them it is a great value and I can choose just about any type of music I want.

      @@BeardedDrums Nice, thanks for the detailed info! I'm gonna check them out. I actually would only want the tracks for personal use (no social media), so perhaps I can find a nice deal. By the way, I think your channel is absurdly underrated. I've been subscribed for a while, but I've now hit the notification bell, I hope this helps with getting more exposure. Looking forward to more videos!

    And have you noticed a specific end result with rounded edges as opposed to straight cuts? Would a rectangular cymbal be any less resoudning?

    • @BeardedDrums
      @BeardedDrums  5 років тому

      I haven’t really done any straight cuts but I have noticed the rounder the edge resembling more of the cymbal’s natural shape yields the best results in the long run. That is mainly regarding repairs, you could definitely cut square or octagonal shapes into cymbals, some companies already do that and get good results.

    What sanding disk or drum did u use on your dremel?
    And why did u use a grinder instead of a cut blade on a grinder?

    • @BeardedDrums
      @BeardedDrums  5 років тому

      It was a cutting blade on the grinder. I do the big cuts with that. I have further refined my process since the video. Instead of goin at the cymbal with the dremel after the big cuts I use a small belt sander to get the edges fairly clean and the get on it with sandpaper. 100, 240, 500, and then 1000. This way when finished I end up with an edge that looks almost identical to the factory finish.

    The one with the jingle on it sounds the best to me.....low and trashy!! on the ride.

      I bought those as pack of three at hobby lobby. Not very expensive, maybe 3 or 4 bucks. Check your local hobby lobby or Michael’s, if not these can be found easily on Amazon.

    Hi, Omg...that ride sounds sooo beautiful! What type? Brand?

    • @BeardedDrums
      @BeardedDrums  3 роки тому

      If I remember correctly that is a Bosphorus Stanton Moore signature Wide Ride. He is not with bosphorus anymore, was with Sabian for a while, and now has moved onto Zildjian.
