Moskwa + Ostankino V2 - Great lead sequencer, cool beatmaker.

  • Version two of the XAOC Moskwa sequencer came out roughly two years ago considering the launch video wave. I think I must have ignored it because of its 8-step appearance and I was looking for something with more channels. Building a live system has always been a challenge for me because after 10 minutes I always get a 'what's next' feeling. And then you just can't repatch, change modules and program a few new melodies and patterns. I have deep respect for people who drive an interesting patch for an hour. Moskwa doesn't seem to be of much help here, but the exact opposite is true. It's made for endless live improvisation and generic music that actually sounds like a real soloist. WMD's Arpitecht also shines with this, but Moskwa offers way more control and interaction. But still, it's can drive just one voice.
The Ostankino Expander adds tons of extra CV control to expand your generative capabilities, but the coolest addition is the gate pattern that fires at every stage. A cool beat doesn't need much, so the Ostankino can be a great minimal drum sequencer. The steps aren't steps, they're stages where each stage can have a lot of settings, even a microsequence. It supports eight presets and you could also load your own scales with the USB port (I was unable to get it to work). The 'bitmap patterns' are great for making breaks and counter-beats.
It's been a lot of fun to make this video and at the end I decided to get a second Moskwa+Ostankino combo. It's a lot of HP for just two voices, but it can help you make music for hours and hours, and amazing beats where the tweak of just one knob can change everything. It's not a review and definitely not a feature demo, but I can highly recommend it.

Great video, thanks. I have a Moskwa and so far I’ve only been using it between 1 and 4 steps as there’s plenty of variety to be had in all the modulation options. I even made a track called “Out it Came” using one step and manual control of the pitch. So as you say, it’s got a lot under the hood. Looking forward to getting to steps 5-8 one of these days 😂

The Moskwa always surprises me. Love the range knob and stepped slew. Nice to see some shared love.

11:13 I'm also surprised by these comments. Admittedly, I'm only using the virtual Plaits in VCV Rack for now, which people say sounds worse, but I already know I'll buy a physical module anyway. There are too many cool things to do to ignore it.

This looks fantastic, especially with the expanded, I love the way you explore it here.
Question for you: for coordinating multiple oscillators and still being able to improv or do generative stuff, have you ever looked at the Sinfonion? It's not a simple module, and it's not exactly a sequencer, but it looks a lot less complicated in practical use than some of the sequencers you've tackled.

I've always seen Sinfonion as a quantizer (the best) and it makes a lot of sense if you have tons of VCO's you'd have to control and make them part of the same key, riff or chord. I never felt I wanted to go that route with the modular, I always stick to a 2x104 HP layout instead of building a Great Wall. I use the PC and Ableton for songs, classical music, etc and the modular for sound design and 'just doing nothing'. A Sinfonion is too much 'production' for me, too much composing and music theory. For me, it's not really about notes, it's about finding sounds that give you the chills. It's been great fun to make the music for this video and my second pair of Moskwa+Ostankino arrived just after I uploaded this. I am preparing a new episode of Modular Composing and maybe I'll refer to the Sinfonion in this context. I also have Mathias' Droid as part of his Mega Sequencer, who built the Sinfonion for ACL. The Droid also features a mini-sinfonion. But here's the difference. I would need to study. With the Moskwa, I can make music first and read the manual later...

Sidenote: modular gets exponentially more complex and difficult while you add more VCO's. Also, the music becomes less interesting because it often sounds like a 'hardware arranger keyboard used on weddings'. Sure there are people who can handle a big modular, but I am not one of them.

@@CinematicLaboratory Yeah, I'm not really looking for "wall of modular" either. But I've started looking at Sinfonion + CV Thing as hopefully a solution to "How can I coordinate a Pianophonic and a Rings without sequencing the whole thing?"

5:50 This sounds like Klaus Schulze from Audentity album! 🎶
What reverb adds that beautiful "tail"?
