How I Set Up the Strymon Iridium - David Hislop IR's

  • In this video I cover how I approach dialing in this pedal to feel like an amp.
    Check out my Amp Sim Tone Series that goes in to far more depth on production online:
    productiononli...
    This video and examples are in STEREO, but it might not appear that way because I'm running stereo out of the headphone input through an 8th inch cable splitting to dual mono TS cable to my interface. I have found that the headphone jack provides more level and bass response.
    The gear I'm using here is:
    -Fender Jazzmaster with Lindy Fralin PAF's
    -"Light gain stage" is my Benson PreAmp
    -"Heavy gain stage" is my Kilt V2
    -"Boost" is a Broken Arrow using its blue side boost.
    -Compressor is a Tone Press
    I have been using the Strymon Iridium as a little quiet apartment means of practice and demo tracking for the past few months. I've found a spot with it that works for me to feel about 70-80% of what I would hope to hear when playing in a live situation with amps.
    There are definite drawbacks compared to real amps, but for a quiet set up, it's working for me.
    The biggest hitter is using David Hislop's IR's. Grab them here:
    www.davidhislo...
    These IR's make the biggest difference for me because of their break up qualities, I like them a lot.
    Enjoy!

    Thank you, this was very helpful! Hadn‘t payed much attention to the round setting, but with your idea of boosting mids and lowend and cutting the highs it became very usable for my sound!

    I actually love the headphone out of iridium. Been connecting to our church soundsytem via headphone out for two years now i hear more lowend via hp out. I only wish strymon add an FX LOOP features via EXP in on top. I love the drives im getting out of the iridium.

    Great tips! It’s amazing how much darker the round setting is with the stock IR’s. I’ve had some great results with some other IR’s but I may have to grab this Hislop one! If I had the controls set up this way on the stock ones though it would be so dark as to be unusable.

    Regarding your point at minute 1:48 , I just want to say thank you so much for making the point about the "treble" frequencies in amp simulators. I've had a love/hate relationship with the Iridium. I don't think the "Round" setting sounds good on it's own but with the RevivalDrive it sounds AMAZING, however, I've been fighting that fizz and was hesitant to move the treble knob below 12 o'clock but saw your vid, did it and viola, now a SUPER AMAZING SOUND! Thanks again, cheers!

    If the Strymon guys are to be believed, the models are component level emulations... the mid control on the round model will render the bass and treble controls less effective as you turn it up and more effective as you turn it down... in other words, cranking the midrange makes your bass and treble adjustments surprisingly subtle.

    • @KenyonReed2
      @KenyonReed2  4 роки тому +1

      Joshua Grammon that would make sense. And while true that I could probably lower the mids to cause the bass to be more apparent, I personally experience the mids and break up quality to suffer a little bit when I turn it down. But it’s still worth experimenting further. That’s what I’ve noticed though is with amp sims is they can feel a little tucked back in the mix and wanted to push the mids to help it feel more forward and amp like.

    • @jgrammon1
      @jgrammon1 4 роки тому

      Nothing against mids, I personally keep the mids wide open... I prefer the tweedy-ness of the tonal character.

    To my ear your over-compressed 12-20 percent. When you took it off my ears sighed in relief. Easy to get your ears overwashed and fatigued just like with reverb. Let your dynamics have a say so too! Or not, great video either way, thank you .

    The low end response that you focused on is a game changer! What kind of approach would you take with the Chime model?

    • @KenyonReed2
      @KenyonReed2  4 роки тому +5

      James Ransom thanks man! In any scenario I would take the same approach with EQ. The focus in my opinion is getting the EQ flat and full. And then it’s a matter of setting up the break up amount in the proper place like described in the video. If these qualities are met, any amp usually works and then it’s just about the difference in break up quality.

    Is it better to run your iridium straight into your audio interface? Or is it better to go stereo out from the iridium to a pinstripe line isolator and XLR out into the audio interface?

    So the mid knob is for the fender changes the amp from blackface to tweed. Doesn’t change the mid range.

    How do you connect your Iridium with your audio interface through the headphone output? Which cable do you use therefor?

    • @KenyonReed2
      @KenyonReed2  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks!! I’m just using an 8th inch cable out of the headphone jack that splits to two mono TS cable which goes to my interface

    • @bryceman944
      @bryceman944 4 роки тому

      Do you use the headphone jack with split ts into DI into house? Or do you use the two outputs to DI? I seem to have full output and full mix into my headphone jack but don’t get the same result on my iridium output

    • @benjaminthancock
      @benjaminthancock 3 роки тому

      @@bryceman944 the headphone out jack has additional power in the output and is active since most headphones don’t have amplifiers in them. The outputs are passive since usb interfaces and FOH consoles have power and more clean headroom. So the headphone out is just louder, which is perceived by our ears as “better”.

    • @KenyonReed2
      @KenyonReed2  3 роки тому

      That’s a tough call. It honestly depends on the way your guitar translates on them. Try your exact same set up on both speakers and see which one simply accomplishes the tones and frequencies your wanting and feels the best under your fingers.

    Is the Iridium last in your chain? Or do you run verb after it? Sounds killer!

    • @KenyonReed2
      @KenyonReed2  4 роки тому +3

      Jay Pittard it is lady in the chain, similar to if you were plugging in to amps. I run verb before it just like if it were plugged in to amps. I’m a huge fan of wet effects going in to amps or amp sims because of the way the effects break up and scream with the amp when it’s driven.

    Is this pedal before or after your pedal chain?

  • @michaelbreach5862
    @michaelbreach5862 4 роки тому

    What kind of cable is that you are using on the output?? like how are you getting the sound of the iridium into your computer to record? When I plug mine into an interface so I can record video, it sounds awful.

    • @KenyonReed2
      @KenyonReed2  4 роки тому +1

      Michael Breach the cable is a simple 8th inch cable (aux/m, or headphone cable) that converts to two TS mono cables (a left and right typical TS cable). I found that cable on amazon for 8$. That then plugs in to my interface in input 1 and 2, left and right. So the questions is what sounds awful? Is it distorting? It’s probably clipping. Turn down the input gain on your interface. Or you can lower the level from the pedal.

    • @michaelbreach5862
      @michaelbreach5862 4 роки тому

      Kenyon Reed thanks for the reply, it’s not exactly clipping... I’ve tried everything, even lowering the volume output of the iridium.. are you saying you plug into your interface using the headphone out jack? I’m using a scarlet focusrite solo so it only has one 1/4 inch input and one XLR. I have been running my pedalboard mono into the iridium and then just using the left out to go into the input if my scarlet focusrite solo.. is this the wrong way to go about it?

    • @KenyonReed2
      @KenyonReed2  4 роки тому

      Michael Breach gotcha. Ya I’ve got a interface that has two 1/4 inch cable inputs. I’m going out of my iridium through the headphone jack that splits to dual 1/4 inch cable so I can run stereo. The way I’m running my pedal board stereo is by using a dual 1/4 Inch cable that turns to one TRS plug. So you can plug in to the one input of the iridium but it’ll be stereo

  • @jonathanslater8551

    Interesting that you keep it totally dry and don't any verb on the Iridium? Any specific reason for keeping that dialed down?

    • @KenyonReed2
      @KenyonReed2  4 роки тому +3

      I don’t use any reverb on the pedal because I’m using stereo reverb from my Strymon Bigsky. I prefer to have an isolated, strong, dry signal and then have full control of my wet effects by my pedal board effects

  • @erikhartley2494

    Would this exact stereo IR setup work just as well in a mono setup?
    Also, if run in stereo, how would it sum if our FOH is mono but our livestream broadcast is stereo?

    • @KenyonReed2
      @KenyonReed2  4 роки тому

      Erik Hartley for the most part yes. It depends on what way you would be setting it up as mono. If you just pull one of the quarter inch cables out of your interface or DI box, then what you’ll have is just one side, one speaker. You’ll also only be capturing the one side of your wet effects. There are things I’ve seen that can sum a stereo image in to mono, and I notice it makes the effects not sit so directly on top of your tone. |||| If you run in stereo but FOH is mono it all depends on if they are summing your stereo image to mono or can only take one input from you. Either way, the results should be similar and I wouldn’t worry too much, but I would encourage them to start making their FOH mix stereo. 😄 and if your broadcast is Stereo, then you should be good to be stereo on broadcast unless your signal is first going to the FOH board, being summed to and then sent to broadcast.

    • @erikhartley2494
      @erikhartley2494 4 роки тому

      Kenyon Reed thanks so much for the detailed response! I guess my main question, I’m summing everything to mono with my Source Audio Collider last in the chain, will I still get both cabs if I’m running a stereo tone with a different IR on each side, summed to mono? From what I understand with our church, the livestream is completely separate and it DOES NOT go to FOH first before it’s processed for broadcast. We’re currently working on getting setup for stereo on livestream but in the meantime, I just run a stereo rig that is summed to mono via the Collider by running one cable out. Livestream then uses a stereo spread plugin to give it the space. One I do go stereo, I do understand I’ll be using two channels. Thanks again!

    • @KenyonReed2
      @KenyonReed2  4 роки тому

      Erik Hartley gotcha ok. Yeah it all depends on how that collider works. If it really is summing you’re stereo left in right in to mono and isn’t just grabbing one side and sending that, then it could still be somewhat capturing the different speakers on either side even though it’s mashed together
