SVDS Boost (SoloDallas) - Pedal Demo
The SVDS is one of the most exciting feeling boosts when playing. It is by no means a clean boost, but the type of aggression it is, is so different and tasteful and harmonically rich. I'm huge fan of drives/boosts with awesome textures and I would put this pretty high on the list. You can hear for yourself.
Check out my Tone Course with David Hislop: www.tonefactor.co/thetonecourse
Time Stamps:
0:00 - Intro
4:27 - Clean tone and first listen
7:00 - Harmonic Content on the sustain
8:44 - Stacking with some drives
11:54 - Internal Trim LOW
16:05 - Internal Trim HIGH
23:11 - Outro
Here’s a bit about the SVDS Boost in SoloDallas's words:
The SVDS Boost is an exact reproduction of the headphone amplifier within the Schaffer-Vega Diversity System (SVDS) wireless receiver, which was introduced in 1975. Originally designed for monitoring purposes, guitarists and bassists soon discovered they could boost their signal up to 30 db by running a cable from the 1/4” headphone jack on the face of the SVDS receiver to their amp input and turning up the headphone volume knob. This hack was most famously used by Angus Young, but he wasn’t the only legend to make this providential discovery. David Gilmour, Eddie VanHalen, Carlos Santana, Peter Frampton, Jerry Garcia and a long list of legendary guitar players were all making use of this unintended boost. Since the 1/4” headphone jack was the only output on the front of the receiver, it’s suspected that many of them discovered it completely by accident, making the SVDS headphone amp the first full frequency boost for guitar and bass.

Meris Mercury X and LVX are really good - Why swap to them?

I ran through a lot of my favorite things that made me finally consider swapping over to the newish Meris Mercury X Reverb and LVX Delay pedals. I'm not interested in jumping on any kind of bandwagons or hype trains for no reason, but solely interested in finding things that sound really good and easily inspire. And I feel like I found those things in these pedals! It can be hard to let go of t...

This is the Konstante. A drive and boost combo. What drew me to it intially was that it had an EP Boost in it, but it also has a sort of Lightspeed style drive in it as well. More bang for the buck. This is the Aspen Overdrive. It is a close relative to the JHS Kilt and Exapndora. Case Study was kind to send one of his units and I wanted the first time I heard it to be while the camera was rolling and it was a blast. This thing not only scratches the itch for having a Kilt or Expandora but it expounds upon it with much needed features such as more volume on tap, a bass control knob, and mo...

I know this is from 4y ago but when you split the headphone signal into 2 mono outputs and connect them into 2 interface channels, do you pan those 2 channels fully to the left and right or both remain in 0 position?
Yes they were both panned hard left and right
Do you plan on doing a demo of the Last Light?
I do! I’ve stacked up a pretty mean back log of drives I’m going to make videos on
@@KenyonReed2 Sweet! I snatched one up on their most recent drop and I’m loving it. A different tonal character than I’ve ever played before. It has this kind of spitiness that I’m really digging.
Do you only use an input buffer? Is an output buffer not necessary because the BigSky is last in your chain?
The output is necessary primarily to send my signal over XLR (or cat5 in this case) to amps that are a long distance away in another room. That being said, the output box does still have a positive impact on my tone. But the Bigsky output buffer is definitely a net neutral tone. It would suffice if you’re mostly just going quarter inch out.
Just ordered this and the compressor!
Now THIS is what this pedal was made for!
Thanks for the review Kenyon! Which delay are using for this demo?
Two questions: did you find it noisy? Is the guitar sound darker when this compressor is engaged?
I didn’t find the pedal itself noisy. Any Compressor is going to raise the noise floor. So if you are in an environment that makes your guitar buzz, it will heighten that since it’s a Compressor. And I didn’t find it to darken my tone, if anything it added a bit of top end richness. But it does have a bigger low end to it which could make it feel a bit warmer in some cases
@ Great, thank you so much 😊
The Dan Electro Baritone got me.
Honestly same
Excellent demo!
🔥
What guitar are you using here?
looks like a Veritas portlander
A Veritas Portlander
How did you setup your BPM page on your Mastermind? I have a 10x and cant figure it out
There’s some commands in there controller that you can program to change BPM by either a specific BPM or also nudge it +1 or -1. I have a page devoted to this. I’m considering making some material in the future the breaks that down
@@KenyonReed2Thanks so much for this! I setup a page on my mastermind 10x just like yours. Appreciate yours and the Tone Factor content! Don’t know if you remember but we met in Birmingham, AL on Bethel’s previous tour
Kenyon I’m sure you’ve answered this a million times, but what camera are you using to capture this? GoPro? 360? Thanks!
Does the high/low toggle and peak level still affect your dry signal even when this is “bypassed”? I’ve seen multiple demo videos where it seems to distort the signal even if the pedal is bypassed.
It does! This was something I didn’t realize when I first messed with the pedal. Which this approach is true to vintage spec. The preamp is always in your chain. So I personally opted for putting it in my RJM as a stereo pedal, last in the chain. So that way I can take it out of my signal path if I want to. While it’s kind of cool that it almost acts as an attenuator to your signal at that point on your board, I didn’t love that I didn’t fully have control over it. And it acts as a bit of a choke point if you turn on a loud drive and boost. They slam in to that preamp
Appreciate the response! I’m still very interested in one of these even with those potential drawbacks - I’ve been on a digital effects binge this past season and want to find a good analog chorus that can balance the BBD goodness with clarity and articulation! Appreciate your ministries too - our church has been blessed by the work you and Dave have done over the years!
what's the 'clean tone'? strymon iridium? timeline/bigsky for the delay/reverb? sounds great - the chorus pedal and otherwise
I’m playing on two amps. A JMI 30/6 and a Fender Hotrod White Lightning. The reverb and delay are Meris Mercury X and LVX
@@KenyonReed2 excellent tone you get!
Well, another name for this pedal is "Light" and I think is the most correct and intended by the company. It is pronounced "LOOKS". The "V" in Latin is "U" and it is pronounced in English like the double "O". It means "Light". The letters can be numbers too, which would be "55".
These have been so great for me! When are expecting to cook up batch 2? Asking for my a friend..
Batch 2 has slowly been in the works for a couple months! I’ve been recently spending even more time on it, mostly also trying to find the theme of what I’m going for. Batch 2 LVX is focusing heavily on making analog BBD delays. And they’re turning out so good. Batch 2 Mercury X is focusing so far on verbs that are using certain modifiers that draw out resonant frequencies in the decay of the reverb. Also turning out amazing
Oh man!! I’m excited bro!
Hey! Are these bigsky presets the ones that are on the tone factor website?
@@candacesmusic yes!
How does it compare with the $112.00 USD Santono UNO that has a Tone control and 2 other voicings, one for an open sound another to tighten.
Strymon just put in a $15 processor in their new BigSky MX and charging twice as much for it... I'm done with Strymon... 💥
Although it’s cheap, it does sound decent. But the biggest thing for me is the Bigsky Mx sounds a bit flat in comparison to the complexity and intrigue of the Mercury X. But the Bigsky is easy to accomplish really good sounding basic verbs. Even if it is a bit flat in comparison, it does sound good for what it does. So do with that what you will haha
When are we getting part 2?
Part two is in the tone course! When we dial our entire pedalboards from scratch
How noisy is it? Thanks
I’ve had no issue with noise! Of course there is the possibility of turning up the gain and limiter and it will generally be “compressing” your signal and heighten the noise floor naturally. But it itself isn’t noisy for me.
What do you love about the clean amps opposed to pretty hot? This is definitely the cleanest I've heard in a while.
What I’ve loved is two specific things. The dynamic punch is pretty incredible. When you dig in, it punches back. And when it’s mixed in the end by a good engineer, they can draw out more top end content since it’s not super fizzy and textured at all times.
@ Awesome. Sounds so good.
I didn't catch who put this pedal board together??
His name is David Puleo!

For the super clean where are you dip switches at?
All flat at the moment. The places it EQs on its own is just so nice.
@ good to know I just got a super sweet not sure I like it yet but we shall see after I play all 4 Christmas services tomorrow
Yo Kenyon. Please do a video on the green Danelectro you got! Would love to hear how you use it and the tones you're getting with it. Love your content and enjoying the TF tonex captures!
I have an earnest question for anyone who reads this and can weigh in. I have a Quad Cortex and an eventide H90, and was given a Chase Bliss Automatone reverb that I’ve incorporated in the fx loop of the H90. Before I got that reverb, I was considering switching to the two big Meris pedals. Now, I’m not sure. Would it be worth going LVX and MercuryX over H90 and Automatone reverb? Or maybe MercuryX in place of Automatone? Probably not huh. I just like gear, lol.
Man that’s tough. Lot of great options there. I do imagine the others offer some unique qualities. I was a bit put off by the H90’s complex UI. And while the Meris is a little complex, once you get the layout, it’s incredibly simple. That being said, I think the Meris pedals together can accomplish almost anything with all their modifiers and some creativity. But there’s no wrong answer with those choices of gear
@ right, I’ve done some tinkering and found some really inspiring sounds. I’ve gotten used to the H90’s ui, although it’s still not my favorite. I think I’m gonna mess around with this for a while and then inevitably swap to the Meris pedals. They just seem like perfect canvases for someone who enjoys tinkering with sounds, which I definitely do.
@ I’m glad you managed to get comfy enough with the H90 UI, it seems like a rad pedal. Yeah I’m sure you’ll love using the Meris Pedals
Solis Ventus when? 👀👀👀
I don’t have any immediate plans to get one, but I’m also not opposed! I love the GFI algorithms and sounds they craft.
Is this just a reissue of the old Storm pedal?
From what I remember, it is a modern recreation of the vintage Schaffer Vega tower that AC/DC was famous for using
your talking too much.......PLAY
Yes sir!! **Starts dancing like a monkey**
Great review. Do you find the Aspen has similar touch sensitivity to the Kilt V1?
Thanks! I feel like it has a bit more touch sensitivity since it’s seems to have a bit more headroom and volume on tap
I bought this on a Black Friday deal. Just buy it, put it after your drives to boost your amp, and let it sing.
What kind of in-ears do you use? Recommend?
I use 64 Audio in-ears! The 18 T’s Which is out of a lot of folks price range, but well worth it. If that’s not something you can swing, secondarily I’d suggest the 4’s. I’ve been told they have a very similar neutral audio profile like the 18T’s
Videos like this one almost make me think I should get a guitar to go with all these pedals
😂
What amp were you using in this video?
I was using a JMI 30/6 on the left and a Blankenship TwinPlex through a Supro cab on the right
Just made the switch and I’m enjoying your presets! One thing I’m running into is when I switch with my RJM I am getting a warp sound even when the BPM is the same. Any solutions for this?
Glad you’re liking them!! Yeah it has to do with the glide function in the global of the LVX, I believe. A good start could be to disable this and see if it solves the problem. Basically that function is just meant to give you the ability to make the cool warp sounds when turning the time knob on your delay when it trails off if you’re in to that kind of thing. But i’m assuming you probably don’t commonly do that since you have it set up to work with your RJM BPM.
@@KenyonReed2awesome! Thank you!!!
Wow. Wasn't expecting that.... Sounds awesome.
Awesome bought these already! Question can the whammy be controlled with an expression pedal? Thank you!
Yes it can! Basically you set it to expression pedal in the expression options instead of the hold. I ran in to a funny issue, that may have just been my set up, where it wouldn’t glide all the way up but would stop right beneath the final full octave up. That’s why I opted for the button with this effect specifically since it needs to be accurate. Plus, also the button is universally friendly from a selling preset standpoint since everyone has that but not everyone has an expression pedal.
Is this one in your preset
I am selling these Strymon presets used for the song on Tonefactor.co yes! The only other thing that was layered on this was a modulated ping pong delay from a Meris Polymoon
Hi Kenyon, how do you set the knobs on your Solodallas Storm? I just got one and am looking for that sweet spot. Really cool pedal.
Check out my demo on the Storm! That’ll give you a ton of possibilities
Does the storm have a internal trim pot as well, i bought my storm 4/5 years ago
It does actually! I only discovered that after making a video on the storm a while back. Lately I’ve left it maxed out internally giving more gain that’s available on the top side
@KenyonReed2 ill check it out then!! What does the trim pot look like?
But the Strymon has more warm & natural tone.
The Stroman pedals definitely do have a really smooth tone to them
So how this is different than the replica storm?
They aren’t based on the same thing and the SVDS doesn’t have a limiter and it’s substantially more aggressive
@KenyonReed2 thanks I may give it a try after the holiday!
Good stuff. Just bought the SVDS without reading up on it at all. I’m a huge SoloDallas fan so I just hit the order button as soon as I could. I have the TSR, Storm, Boost and now this. I was curious where it fit into the series.
Where did you order it from? The SoloDallas page shows a 404 error for the SVDS page, and the SoloDallas home page says the SVDS is "coming soon".
@ I ordered direct from the SoloDallas page like a week ago or so. I also went back onto the page to read up and got the same error code. So idk if I was supposed to get it or not haha
Solodallas for the win! 🔥
Your demos are supreme to all other demos. Without a doubt I never walk away from your demos not learning what I wanted to learn. I so appreciate the effort you put into these!
