One major downside to running the pickups is the 65ft length laws and even shorter in some states. Cab and chassis truck without any cargo carrying area is considered a tractor/power unit and you're good up to 75 ft just like the big trucks. Most 40 footers will put you over 65 ft with a crew cab long bed pickup hooked to it. Tow Piglet specifically used Big Tex trailers because they have shorter 8 foot necks that just barely squeak you under that limit (not because they're the best trailers or anything) where as most of them have something closer to a 9 foot neck. This has nothing to do with CDL vs non-CDL.
One thing to mention… cab and chassis, you CAN NOT, Insure them on a personal auto policy. This being said, if you buy a cab and chassis, you have to go straight to commercial insurance policy. This sucks for people who don’t want to start a business right away, but want to purchase the truck. Personal auto, won’t insure vehicle with a gvwr of 16k and greater. Info straight from Geico, other insurers may be more accepting. I was trying to purchase a ram 5500 cab chassis. The good thing about the ford f450 pickup is the weight is 14k gvwr.
If you go without the bed you can register the truck as a tractor TR and pull longer trailers and be legal instead of it being registered as TT truck trailer

There is a $10,000 difference in price. We run 2 F550s with the 6.8 gas engine and bought both for the price of one F450 Diesel. He gas engine is far less expensive for repairs and maintenance an has the same towing capacity as the F450 Diesel. We use a tuner to increase power output that is only slightly less than the Diesel. They stopped production of the 6.8 in 2013, but the 7.3 gas is now available. The new gas 7.3 F550 cost the same as the Diesel F450.
@@Kaatu-barada-nikto The new 7.3 gas is being used by the rental truck industry for the same reason I sighted, repair expense of diesel. Our trucks use the gas 10 cyl 6.8 which make more torque than the new 7.3.
@willl 77 Average fuel mileage is less than the Diesel but the repair cost are so much lower the diesel fuel mileage I not going to equal the expense of repair. We have a truck with all original drive components doing its job at over 375K. we had another F350 SRW that was ran hot at 250K miles and had to be replaced. We bought a reman and with labor was only 5200, compared to the last 08 F350 diesel engine we replaced at 300K for 12,000. That's a 2 to 1 ratio meaning I can do 700 or more miles for a diesel engine swap on my gas
I would suggest that the “F-450 pickup” really should have been called an F-375. It has a lower cargo capacity than the “F-350 pickup” at the expense of better towing. But it’s GVWR is the same as the 350. The heavier tires and brakes actually l cause a reduction in cargo capability. Yes. It’s a good looking pickup, but at the end of the day is still a class 4 truck with an attempt at some clever marketing (F-450 must be better than a F-350 -right?!) I’m looking for a pickup to build into an overlander; the F-450 chassis cab meets my requirements but the F-350 and F-450 pickups do not.
Ford is ok but For towing nothing beats ram with Cummins and aisin combo. Ram also has air suspensions because they know people tow with ram. If only ram made a 4500 in pickup
The only way to get air on the 4500/5500 is the ambulance package and that's not something you just simply find. I'm a big fan of both brands but right now ford is just the better truck.

Look man, you made a video on why you think it's the best...now I'm going to list why I think it's the worst. #1--complicated V8 engine that requires specialty tools and a magician. #2- anytime you have to do any work to said complicated V8 engine, You have to pull the cab to get to anything, not good for trucking. It's 8 hours labor before you even start the job. #3--HORRENDOUS CP4 Fuel system. It's not if it's when!! #4--10 speed transmission known to be having major problems. 6 in a row is meant to tow. That's why you don't see V8 diesels in semi trucks or anything meant to tow. It's a beautiful truck but I would not use it for trucking. That fuel system alone is a deal breaker. The inline 6 far outshines a V8 once high milage comes around. They both work good until then..
Thanks for sharing this info, it is very useful. Do you know if the detuned Chassis can be tuned up to HPs and torque you have on yours? Thanks once again. Great work!

I think like 67 foot. Ive never had an issue.
Is the F-450 still the best? We have an 06 F-350 and wanted to start a hotshot business it has the 6.0 powerstroke. What's your opinion?
Any truck with a 6.7 is far and away better than 6.0s or 6.4s
There is a $10,000 difference in price. We run 2 F550s with the 6.8 gas engine and bought both for the price of one F450 Diesel. He gas engine is far less expensive for repairs and maintenance an has the same towing capacity as the F450 Diesel. We use a tuner to increase power output that is only slightly less than the Diesel. They stopped production of the 6.8 in 2013, but the 7.3 gas is now available. The new gas 7.3 F550 cost the same as the Diesel F450.
The horsepower may be close but you’re no where near the same torque.
@@rctjacksonville There's no way you're getting 900 plus lb ft of torque from that v10 triton.
What is the kind and length of your trailer? I have the same truck and worried about length laws.
I think I'm at like 66. F450 and 40 foot Diamond-C
Yes. It’s a good looking pickup, but at the end of the day is still a class 4 truck with an attempt at some clever marketing (F-450 must be better than a F-350 -right?!)
I’m looking for a pickup to build into an overlander; the F-450 chassis cab meets my requirements but the F-350 and F-450 pickups do not.
Ooops. It’s a class 3 truck.
Can u use a f450 as a non cdl Hotshots
Thoughts on M2 ?
The 5.9 have less emotions and better fuel mileage and better reliability no egr and the g56 is the only good trans that they with but what's your gvawr rating for the f450 my 3500 is only 9200 lbs the truck weighs 8400 what's the f450 weigh
I was wondering, how do you check/fill your dually air pressure? I cant reach the back ones?
I have to like jam it in there. Its hard.
Detuned for longer duty cycle
I’m barely getting my hotshot business if the ground, that being said didn’t have the capital to buy a nice truck like that. I’m starting of with F250 single wheel in the rear with a 28ft trailer what are your thoughts?
Need more specs than that.
@@bustedknucklelogistics9404 sorry. F250 Super Duty gasser and 28+5 dove tail Big Tex Trailer. I’m out of Los Angels CA. I don’t have the truck to do long hauls. Do you think I can make it doing locally with what equipment that I have?
@@frankvelasco7003 fuel cost will eat your lunch in a gasser.
As far as truck insurance is that truck considered commercial?
How much weight can you actually carry? Not including truck and trailer weight.
I have a cdl and I'm trying to start hot shot driving
Do you know about the super duty rear axle recall
Is your 450 deleted and if not have you had any issues with the emissions setup?
No issues but I'm very anxious to get it done. I hate emissions. No issues yet tho.
Thank you
What are your thoughts on the Ford f550?
I just dont understand how you drivers arent getting shut down for being over length pickups are capped at 65ft cab and chassis are 75ft please explain
I'm like 67.
you get more mpg flatbed semi and more money this setup to me my opinion makes no sense if you have cdl might as well get a semi with this..
Good information 👍
Looking at a 450 and 40' fmax212. If my research is correct overall will be 67'??
Yep, my exact setup.
I have f450 with gatormade custome 38ft and I’m right at 65.
Just found your channel, great content!! Keep it going, hopefully I’ll see you on the road soon!!
I appreciate the video but I could not put my livelihood in the hands of Ford, I just cannot do it. The overall reliability of the F-series is (and has been since the 7.3) too bad for me to sleep at night.
If u don't know how to work on trucks and you can't be bothered to learn, you'll always pay a lot more. If u want a truck that requires zero investment, never breaks down, zero maintenance, just rent/lease and pay thru the teeth.
Can you write off mileage sense it’s built as a commercial vehicle?
yes
They have lower gearing to save transmission, that’s also the reason they de tune them....
Much more complex than that.
Any year would be good for a F-450
^??
Answer to title: because you love being shut down for CP4 failures. Or did u swap to CP3?
Love the setup! Been looking for this info!
What's wrong with the 2019 and up Rams?
19 and 20 have problematic pumps.
they are detuned yes but you can tune it the 10 speed ford trans is junk!
Still no problems?
Will the F-350 work for hotshot
Sure!
What truck should i get if I'm going to haul horse trailers ?
Depends on the trailer you're wanting to pull. I need more info.
the fords are having trans problems with the 10 speed and the cummins is a far better engine than the v8s.
Ive had both, 6.7 power strokes are crazy. Don't knock it til you drag 30k with one. Ive always had cummins and still enjoy them.
Why not just do semi instead of hotshot?
Thanks for sharing this info, it is very useful.
Do you know if the detuned Chassis can be tuned up to HPs and torque you have on yours?
Thanks once again. Great work!
I think you would need a Banks programer to get the power be you want. It's 50 state legal, mad will not void the warranty.
Yea, but you'd have to tune and delete the truck which is better anyway. But you're still left with not as good parts.
Can I use this for non cdl to start?
What brand of tires do you run
BEWARE Ford has a big problem with high pressure fuel pump failure. mine went out at 52k and is going out again at 93k.
I'm back again.... because I'm getting a f450 soon 😆 about start my own been CdLa 14yrs , think it's time
Same boat
Dam bro! 14 years company driver? I'm still in my 1st year and thinking fuck this corporate stuff.
Thank you for all the videos and information 💪 very helpful
Whats the most you can tow
Depends on same variables but 18k is a safe number.
did you add auxillary fuel tank?
Yes
Why F-450 is not a non CDL?
another great video man! stay safe!
Any cp4 fuel issues ??? Rams having issues
Nope! Keep the filters changed and good fuel in it.
The 450 truck only has 14k gvw though.
Correct but only "Legally". The trucks actually ratings are much higher. Sore subject.
Opinions on a F550
I like your videos I think I live pretty close to you do ya know where oakboro North Carolina is
Yep!
You don't got the answer's
Nice truck n shirt watching from California
14:15 if u rebuild the bitch it won't break down. I'll take a 7.3 with 400k all day if it's dirt cheap leaving budget to send it to the machine shop and get new injectors
can you have a class b cdl and do cdl hotshot
