    Thank you for the great videos. I am someone new with freeCAD but have a long experience in drafting from ink drawings, cad, 3D molding and FEA applications. Now I am using freeCAD for woodworking projects and one major advantage of the spreadsheet for me is 1- I defined my stock material size in one place. ie : board thickness. If my purchase board is different I can be adjust the model for it. 2- I can standardize the size of my mortises and tenons, tongs and grooves and apply this dimensions thought out my project. 3- can adjust tolerance that I get from my test run piece. This is a major spreadsheet's advantage even if I making one table or one cabinet. I designed it without knowing the final dimensions of my stock material and adjust when I start making it. One assembly, multiple of small standard components that can vary from error or supply. The spreadsheet is superb for this in my opinion. Luc

      I like it as a way to visualize but it can get very busy. It's just another way to use freecad.

    Once again you knock the ball out of the park! Being that I'm just now moving over to Free CAD, I have surfed around looking for instructional Vids on this. There are one or two (A couple more British Guys coincidentally enough) that are really helpful. the rest are a waste of time for the beginner. Some have now play by play, others are old, some have nutty music, yours on the other hand are, in a field of 2 or three competitors that are all WAY out front, clear, understandable, and focused. As for this particular technique, it looks particularly high horsepower. I see myself using both of these more as I get going. Once again, many thanks for your hard work!

      @@AdventuresincreationGood morning, thanks for the RE. I know you have a deep mine of possible content, but I'll make one more suggestion to add to the pile. Can FC model a Balloon sort of object. I mean in a way that as it gets shorter in one axis it elongates in the other two. I tried this with a spheroid and had limited success. I'm trying to model an Airbag suspension. As the swing arm travels through its ark the bag needs to change shape. I realize this is fairly advanced compared to your other content, but it may be interesting enough to warrant "a go" as you guys say. I'm watching all of your content and make a point to give you some interaction. Once again, thanks for your work.

      I am not sure that it can do this. That would need the "balloon" part to change as the movement occurred. You might be able to get there with some variables but I am not sure.

    Thanks for the knowledge. I've been using freecad for a long long time now, I hate to guess, 10+ years? So much better than back then. Lots of things have changed and I'm still doing things I figured out how to hack together models. Thanks again.

    Outstanding video. I ALWAYS learn something new when watching you work. Personally I’m more of a sketch guy….took some drafting in school. I very much appreciate the pro-con comments as you work……these are important details as all methods have their place with different projects. Those comments allow us to approach a new project with more insight. Thank you.

    That's a very smart idea with a master sketch. I wish I've learned more about descriptive geometry and technical drawing during studies. Maybe you can make a course about it too?

    Brilliant as usual. I use a master sketch method but then use shape binder to get sizes into the working sketch. Memory is not good enough to remember the names I gave to dimensions! Found recently that shortcut for getting external geometry has changed from just x to g,x. Thanks for all your work enjoy it all

      Excellent! Some people are using a mixture of master sketch and spreadsheet for that reason.

    Great video series.
    2 questions:
    1) What is the purpose of the Reference check box on a constraint dimension ?
    2) Why couldn't you combine a spreadsheet with a master sketch ? Put the dimensions for the master sketch in the spreadsheet. Best of both worlds ? I like having the master sketch to visualize what I'm building. But I like having values in the spreadsheet because they are easier to change there. And you can do things like tolerance clearance calcs in the spreadsheet and have it update the master sketch and then the model.
    Wouldn't it be nice if you could have the spreadsheet tiled beside the sketch, open a dimension constraint, select the cell you want to take the dimension from and it pastes in the Spreadsheet. variable name ? Could this be done with a macro ? It wouldn't be hard if you could rightclick the cell to copy the full alias object name ? Would eliminate a lot of typing.
    I love the concept of using both a spreadsheet and a master sketch. So much easier to make changes to the model without digging through all the individual sketches. Really easy to identify how changing a variable will change the model when you see what it does on the master sketch. For me, this aspect of 3D modelling has always been missing... no "big picture" of the model's dimensions.

      I like the approach with a spreadsheet and master sketch. I suppose it depends on the complexity of your model, give it a go and let me know how you get on with it.
      For 1) I believe that is allow you to see a dimension without it being a "driving" dimension.

    GREAT VIDEO, need to know my options for sure. PROGRESS REPORT: After this 14th video I am able to predict what the next step may need to be, to try operations on my own and sometimes I get it right,Lol. The biggest thing to me that caused the most confusion was the "Order of Operations", in which I have learned to Open File or New File, then Save it, then create the Part, then create the Body (rename Body before creating the sketch helps at this time, or weird things happen?), then create the sketch. Practicing over and over helps, repetition is my friend. Being able to create using either a MasterSketch or a Spreadsheet is awesome. I've had a lot of trouble with making objects symmetrical. getting "sketch contains redundant constraints", "Please remove the following redundant constraints: X" is critical to fixing the problem, do not just delete the very last constraint in the list, this just deletes the symmetry you just did, the culprit is usually before this, right after the colon(:) duh .... to me. After the last video I was messing around with changing directories to get to my recently downloaded and saved fonts, well FreeCad changed my default directory structure so when I tried to save a new file it would create an error, so I had to go back into my directories after selecting New, or Open, and directing FreeCad on where to look, my was under C:/Weliver/documents, and then everything started working fine!

    Just saw another video on master sketching that suggested using the Sketcher work bench to avoid creating an unnecessary body for a master sketch. Might try your exercise with that concept since the dimensions have no need to be particularly located in space.

    Enjoyed the modelling differences between master sketch and spreadsheet design. I would say that the master sketch method is greater degree of difficulty because the drop down menu for master sketch has multiple entries of master sketch ( capital letters, lower case letters, both with and without parentheses, then there are sketch 001, 002, 003 with and without parentheses, before one can find the actual named dimension in the list, so very tedious to follow. I did notice that the sketch numbers mentioned above seemed to follow the arts tree hierarchy. Overall I found that the master sketch involved retaining more names in ones current memory slots front cortex, so that makes it harder. But good work with the comparative methodology.     Grate video. The master sketch is a thing of wonder, not so keen on the spreadsheet as I like the visual aspects of the master sketch, can see me going from an idea to a spreadsheet without having to do a sketch along the way.

    Great stuff. It seems to me that the spreadsheet approach would be useful for something that has to be scaled overall - I haven't tried it but I guess that I could build a spreadsheet column that calculated, say, double the original dimensions, and then alias them so that the doubled values drive the sketches?
    I notice that in the Master Sketch I can filter the constraints so that it shows me only the Named Constraints, which is handy when I'm naming them in the first place, but it's irritating that when referencing them in the model sketches, the editor doesn't bring up the options for named constraints in the same way that it does for spreadsheet aliases. I can live with it, so thanks to you, and thanks to the FreeCAD developers.
    Edit P.S. You didn't tell us what the 45° construction line was for in the Master Sketch...?

      Excellent, you are approaching it the right way, push the limits and discover how you can make it work for yourself. The 45 degree line was a projection line but I ended up working around it.

    Good Video..
    Exploring 2D drawings is a benefit if your going to be using say blueprints and the like as such formats are 2D based. Even in Blender, we often use 2d images to create 3D forms - so understanding doesnt hurt..
    With respect, I wouldn't necessarily avoid caps in naming - I actually constantly use them in a c++ style naming convention..
    Say for instance you came back to your project months later or another was to make use of your project, you may have to study to figure out the names.. Instead:
    sqWidth - sqwidth
    sqHeight - sqheight
    largeDiam - largediam
    largeDiamHeight - largediameterheight
    Just makes reading easier - I even use it for naming parts/objects in any graphic software and even spreadsheets.. Just a thought to bear in mind..

      I am told by my expert programmer coworkers that this capitalization convention is called camelCase. I am not a programmer, so I only have their word to go on.

    I'm going through in order, and it appears that I'm about halfway through so if you cover this between #15 through whatever number you are up to by the time I get there, disregard; I'd like to be able to do some exporting of PDF's of the technical drawings, I assume that I need the master sketch method and the TechDraw workbench.. I didn't have any knowledge of the master sketch until today, and poking around the tech draw workbench left me frustrated enough to come back to these videos. I don't want to skip around because I don't want to miss something important.
    BTW, yesterday I modeled up a repair for a wall hanging home decoration and it actually worked. I modeled it up in under 30 minutes. Two weeks ago, I doubt I would have been able to do it as efficiently, in fact, I probably would have been too frustrated to finish it, and just make it with my angle grinder and some scrap pipe and/or a lot of glue and duct tape.

    Must have missed it, but what do the constructions lines you put into the sketch in the beginning do? It looks like they just allow you to organize the sketch?

      They are just a way to project the geometry into the different views

    This is very cool. I want to start 3D printing bucks for hat making and a spreadsheet will be perfect for changing hat dimensions!
    Is there a way to add notes or labels to the master sketch? For instance labels that say "Top View" , "Side View", " Front view"? Along the lines of draft lines in that they do not effect the finished model, they just appear on the sketch?

      I don't think you can add notes to the sketch without affecting the model but I will check

    Thanks for this series, it's been very helpful so far. You've certainly earnt a sub and probably another patreon :)
    A quick question, you refer to dimensions that are defined with a formula as 'reference' dimensions (and they turn blue). I'm using a default install of freecad (0.20) and when I use a formula to define a dimension, mine turn orange. They turn blue only if I specifically draw them in using reference mode (blue up in the toolbar) or actually tick the reference dimension box.
    Have you changed the colour scheme, or are perhaps using another option somewhere?
    Sorry if this is a dumb question, I've yet to read up on how all the 'reference' and driving dimension stuff works, I'm not across that at the moment.

    The = hotkey is oneheckof a useful keyboard shortcut. By the way, I'd use a spreadsheet all day long as opposed to a master drawing as you illustrated. Great video, lots of good info and I appreciate your hard work in teaching us about FreeCAD.
    I do have a request, I am designing a part to hold a dial gauge (horizontally or vertically) on a 20x20 extruded aluminum rail (think 3D X-axis) and I managed to get the basic cup done with the cutouts for the stem, but I have not yet been able to figure out how to cut out for the gauge face locking screw, it's about 45 degrees offset from the stem.
    Still learning but having a great time, also was not able to get the polar pattern to work for the cutouts around the outer perimeter of the cup, any suggestions.

    Yeah, the Master Sketch Idea would work if you´d have the worksheet on your first and the driven 3D-Model on your second screen.

    Everyone, remember to have the "Auto remove redundants" and the "Auto update" checked or you will get the over constrained error, I saw those settings. So that solved "that" problem but there are still settings that I have not matched to yours giving me problems. I cannot get the 1st dimension to take in blue it comes out in orange like a constraint error. Can you go over the settings you use in case there is something there? Update, I got everything to work but I have orange colored dimension lines on the side views. go figure? 👍✌🥃

      Yeah, auto remove is a good thing. You can still get some constraint errors. I usually find my approach of constraining geometry first before adding dimensions usually gets me to a fully constrained sketch faster.

    Too bad there's not a way to generate the master sketch as you have and then let it produce a spread sheet from the sketch.
    It seems that the correlation would need a reference point to establish from.
    IS that beyond the ability of FreeCAD's algorithms ?
    For someone who learned technical drawing as a schoolboy on drafting tables 5+ decades ago with pencils, rulers and soap erasers, THIS FreeCAD is like being in drafting heaven with angels showing it in 3D video as it's being designed !!! Your presentation is Ecstatic.

      I am sure with some programming it could be extrapolated into a spreadsheet. I too created drawing with pencil and paper... This is way more fun!

    It would be very helpful to start with a description of what you are going to do (and why), rather than with a drawing you delete. I am a noob, and the fault arguably is in my approach and/or foundation. You clearly know what you are doing, and the video series could be an awesome pathway into learning the software, though, so I offer this as (hopefully) constructive suggestion. Start with why the information to be presented will benefit the viewer, perhaps next go to what you assume the viewer knows (and if they don't know it, where they can get the information is a big plus), and try to structure the presentation so that there are waypoints every 5 to 10 minutes that make sure everybody is in synch.

    Imho, this is not a master sketch, but a visual spreadsheet.
    Master sketch is a sketch you copy directly with external geometry.
