@@Adventuresincreation As far as Blender I would start with a sphere and cut it and alter the size and shape or use booleans, but that doesn't work for real world applications and 3d printing, another words I can manipulate the mesh to make it look good for on a monitor, but it is not as accurate. Your tutorials are great and the improvements in your presentation make it easier to follow along. However I am having difficulty with the SweepBody when using the B-spline; instead of what appears to be a solid body (which I can get when just using a multi point line) I get 2 planes the width of the ProfileSketch. They are curved, but don't appear to follow the curve of the PathSketch. Hopefully this is clear enough that you might have a clue to what I am doing wrong. Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words. When you look at your path (b-spline) by rotating it, does it appear to run into 3D space or is it just along one axis? It's hard for me to picture exactly what you are doing with it.
@@AdventuresincreationThank you for the reply! I can appreciate your difficulty in analyzing my problem. I think I have it figured out - although there might have been other problems, the sketch was associated with the wrong body. Thanks again.
Hi and like many of us out there, thank for your time in doing these tutorials. I have a problem that when I go to loft the first sketched box, I get a white box with (Cannot use selected object. Selected object must belong to the active body) and yet the drawing is green and I have followed your instructions. Any Ideas? Thank you.
It is likely that the body where the sketch resides is not the active body. You can double click it or right click the body in the model tree and select make active. Then try your loft again.
Thanx for the great video. I just have an issue with shape alignment on the sweep. Look closely at the ends of the sweep, then imagine a normal projecting from those faces. You'll notice that those normals don't align with the curve tangents. There doesn't appear to be any options for normal-to-tangent alignment for the sweep. Do you know of a way to achieve this?
My problem is I want to create a path that goes in an irregular direction, say, from an xy plane to an xz plane and it traverses gradually, say, imagine like a long pool slide. I've created multiple datum planes but encountered lot of out of scope errors, besides the process I did is quite complicated just for creating a simple path. Have you guys created a video specifically for that? All videos I've seen only concentrates on a single plane. I'd appreciate to get any info or links. TY.
Edit.. inserted "multi-section": If my visual 3D perception is not fooling me, the first sweep of the square along the B spline line keeps the square normal to the spline rather than the axis it was originally created on. So, the square does not necessarily end up in the same plane that it was created in. When doing the multi-section sweep, however, if the ending shape is in the same plane as the beginning shape, the entire sweep stays in the same plane? Is that correct? This is just visual observations, so may be incorrect. By the way, with my less-than-perfect vision, the larger icons are better. Thanks for your detailed training videos.
Thanks for your quick reply. Sorry, I'm a thicky. Can you be more explicit in the expression "make the profile sketch hollow". I found another way to create it by selecting 'thickness' on one face and using another sketch on the other face, pocketed. Regards, Leon
Is it possible to ad an additional sketch to an existing additive loft? For me, a preview of it appears but when I select 'OK' it disappears. Am I doing something wrong or is FreeCAD incapable of completing the task?
Thanks for the video. Is it possible to make the loft follow a 3d path or is lofting restricted to 2d (of the path sketch) ? I'm wondering if/how I could use this to model the cables which snake around a more complex machine.
I am trying to create a hook shape using additive sweep with multiple sections. I have up to my 2nd section working with everything being solid. I can sweep the third section as a solid but when I try to add the 3rd multiple section end shape section it keeps ending up as not being a solid. Any ideas how to keep as solid all the way through?
11:40 each time I start a sketch selecting another plane (XZ instead of XY for instance) my sketch ifs forming outside the Body .I'm struggling with this 'cause I have not clue how to impose the sketch inside the body no matter the axis.
@@Adventuresincreation this is what I was thinking as well. I was able but at certain moment I became crazy. And I have not finished. I will complete the work another day.
In your sweep demonstration, you attached (constrained) the beginning of your path profile to the x-y plane at the x axis. I would like to attach the path to a datum plane (where my profile sketch is drawn) and it won't allow me to constrain it to the intersection of axis and datum plane. How do I get profile and path so share the same point?
@@Adventuresincreation I'm a Noob of course. I created a starting datum point based on the profile sketch geometry, but it does not appear to be available for creating a restraint in the path sketch. If I place the beginning of the path sketch at the correct position dimensionally to the profile sketch, the sweep works, but this seems very primitive. Is there another way? Thanks!
@@lemonfish1890 you can place a datum the same way if you are going to use it for multiple points but if it's a one off, then you won't gain anything. Sometimes you have to use dimensions to position things.
What if we have sketches with more than one shape on it. Like one sketch with 4 circles, second, at offset, with 2 circles. And we want to create loft between only two circles there. Is possible or is it needed to redraw thing into separate sketches for loft and separate for rest?
What would keep me from being able to change the value in attachment when trying to loft in the plan? It will not allow me to change any value in any axis?
@@Adventuresincreation Thanks for the reply! I will double check. After watching a few more of the videos I noticed you starting a part first. I have not been doing that so that could be it. I have just been going straight to New file, New body, then new sketch. I don't quite understand the importance of the sequencing it should all fall under.

I'm trying to sweep along a b-spline to make a longeron along my fuselage right now, nothing happens or at least it doesn't come out right. Does anyone have any tips? I can extrude them but it's a pain in the arse figuring out the right ratio of xyz to make them extrude at the correct angle.
@@Adventuresincreation I have sketches of my other profile of the fuselage, with b-splines intersecting along all of the sections which Is where my longerons will be. I managed to extrude them in part, but sweep would be so much easier because then I wouldn't have to do an extrude and pad to every longeron if for any reason I may choose to 3d print them instead of laser cutting.
I was getting close to the end of lesson#5 and started having issues again. I had been saving my work "save" so when it started acting funny (it "mm" switched to "um") so I just closed project discard changes, since I had been saving, Right? I re-open lesson #5 and found out none of the saves worked and all my work was lost... My Question: so if you save during a lesson and then close without hitting save again then all the other saves in-between will be lost?
I would like to add that my Freecad first started to do the same thing everytime I would try to dimension, perform a symmetry just like before (points got really small so I could not select them) so I reinstalled the latest version of Freecad, also then my units changed from "mm" to "um" which I thought was weird. I can send the file if needed? meanwhile I will go back to lesson #5 and start again with a new file and a different file name. Thanks
As I commented on your last video, I found that the front of the loft has two sides with a line down the middle (oddly enough the line being the sketch). For some reason slicers HATE this line and will mess up the 3d print job. Is there a way to remove the line? The only way I found to fix the issue is to export the file, open the exported file in FreeCAD and then export that new file again. Please tell us there is a better way. :)
I'm trying to subdivide a small lidded storage box by adding small removeable part containers with an open top based upon something similar to this design: ua-cam.com/video/VntGnLuwoeY/v-deo.html But for those that will be inserted around the outside perimeter, the small containers I'm creating ideally would slope outward slightly (i.e. be slightly wider at the top in one X or Y direction) to fully use the space since the storage box slopes outward in the divided spaces around the perimeter. I successfully created the loft after establishing the two squares in FreeCAD and lifting the top square in the Z plane, however, after performing the loft, if I try to Pocket the shape, it insists on removing the left side despite only having selected the top face to do the pocket. I assume this is related to the fact that the left face is not planer with the YZ plane (the only side that isn't planer to a standard plane). Do you know what I'm missing here, or if there's another method to hollow out the shape to get my small storage bin, or is FreeCAD limited in not being able to pocket irregular shapes like that? Your tutorials are top shelf and whatever I'm trying to learn I review what you've put out before looking elsewhere. Thanks for putting together such a great series. I'm far from being able to pull it off, but perhaps you might see value in creating a tutorial to generate boxes like that from a spreadsheet where the dimensions and wall thickness is entered to create any small storage bin?
Looks like a good topic for a video. Did you try using a boolean operation to remove the pocket? I am not sure why it wouldn't work with a regular sketched pocket, you could create a plane and tilt it to the angle of your loft then the pocket would be planar with the loft.
First of all I ahtnk you very much for sharing, and I am grateful, but sometimes you do some things and there is no way to follow what you are doing, like when you start deleting or turning off the body or some other things which for a begginer like me takes ages to find out how you did it .... But no matter what I am grateful for you decide to share your knowlage.....:)
I am not sure what you mean by deleting things? Usually, you delete something by selecting it and hitting the delete key. To turn things on and off, I explain very slowly that you select the item in the model tree then hit the spacebar. What would you suggest to make this clearer?
I was working through these most excellent tutorials had a little hiccup took a break came back and realized that the loft icon does not perform the same function as the sweep icon problem solved. If you can't laugh at yourself somebody else will be more than happy to laugh at you.

Have you guys created a video specifically for that? All videos I've seen only concentrates on a single plane. I'd appreciate to get any info or links. TY.
I think there is something on this later on in the series, but I am not sure which video 🤦♂️
Edit.. inserted "multi-section": If my visual 3D perception is not fooling me, the first sweep of the square along the B spline line keeps the square normal to the spline rather than the axis it was originally created on.
The sweep should follow the line it is swept along and be normal to that line.
Great, but how do you now make it hollow please?
You would make the profile sketch hollow
Thanks for your quick reply. Sorry, I'm a thicky. Can you be more explicit in the expression "make the profile sketch hollow". I found another way to create it by selecting 'thickness' on one face and using another sketch on the other face, pocketed. Regards, Leon
When you create your profile sketch, make an inner profile, now what you sweep will be hollow
Is it possible to ad an additional sketch to an existing additive loft? For me, a preview of it appears but when I select 'OK' it disappears. Am I doing something wrong or is FreeCAD incapable of completing the task?
You may need to toddler it's visibility, select it in the tree and hit the spacebar.
Bigger Icons are better thanks
Great, it's funny, I have wanted to switch to the cool dark mode with small icons but I don't think people could follow along very well.
Thanks for the video. Is it possible to make the loft follow a 3d path or is lofting restricted to 2d (of the path sketch) ? I'm wondering if/how I could use this to model the cables which snake around a more complex machine.
You can do that with the sweep. It follows a 3d path. It makes great cables. The loft doesn't follow a path.
Ok. Great. .... How do I make a 3d path ?
@@andrewfowler2874 I believe you can select the edges of bodies, but that's it, I don't know a way to make 3d sketches
Can you make screw and bolts in the same way. Can make a video on those two.
There is a whole fastener workbench. I don't usually model screw threads from scratch.
It sounds like something is not properly closed in the sketch. Take a close look at your sketch and make sure the points are not just overlapping.
11:40 each time I start a sketch selecting another plane (XZ instead of XY for instance) my sketch ifs forming outside the Body .I'm struggling with this 'cause I have not clue how to impose the sketch inside the body no matter the axis.
The coordinate system shouldn't change, have tried adding a plane to see how that goes?
@@Adventuresincreation do you mean that if I draw a ploygon on XY I can’t the other one o. YZ? Did I correctly understand?
You should be able to make sketches in any plane
@@Adventuresincreation this is what I was thinking as well. I was able but at certain moment I became crazy. And I have not finished. I will complete the work another day.
In your sweep demonstration, you attached (constrained) the beginning of your path profile to the x-y plane at the x axis. I would like to attach the path to a datum plane (where my profile sketch is drawn) and it won't allow me to constrain it to the intersection of axis and datum plane. How do I get profile and path so share the same point?
You could add a datum point
@@Adventuresincreation I'm a Noob of course. I created a starting datum point based on the profile sketch geometry, but it does not appear to be available for creating a restraint in the path sketch. If I place the beginning of the path sketch at the correct position dimensionally to the profile sketch, the sweep works, but this seems very primitive. Is there another way? Thanks!
@@lemonfish1890 you can place a datum the same way if you are going to use it for multiple points but if it's a one off, then you won't gain anything. Sometimes you have to use dimensions to position things.
What about making the lofts and sweeps hollow throughout the path? thx
You can do that with hollow profiles.
when I try to drop the square or any shape my crosshair becomes a double arrow. It rotates the grid rather than placing a shape. Any idea why?
I am not sure why? What button are you pressing?
What if we have sketches with more than one shape on it. Like one sketch with 4 circles, second, at offset, with 2 circles. And we want to create loft between only two circles there. Is possible or is it needed to redraw thing into separate sketches for loft and separate for rest?
Separate sketches makes everything simpler, and easier
@@Adventuresincreation Can existing sketch be split into separate sketches easily?
It depends how simple the sketches are. I try to keep sketches simple and create more of them.
When I say the curser I mean the RED circle.
Apparently a great color if you have a visual impairment.
Sir how to create 3D nurbs surface with control points?
I'll consider a video on that

What would keep me from being able to change the value in attachment when trying to loft in the plan? It will not allow me to change any value in any axis?
Double check that you are changing the attachment and not the position.
Also want to make sure I say I'm glad I found your channel. I just started freecad two weeks ago. Will definitely be finding you on patreon, maybe a few days but thanks a ton!
@@OFerrell21 I always use a part first. It can be useful if you end doing an assembly. The part can have multiple bodies in it.
@@OFerrell21 Thanks! On Patreon you will get early releases of videos and all the FreeCAD files that I create for the videos. You can also have more input on the future videos.
I'm trying to sweep along a b-spline to make a longeron along my fuselage right now, nothing happens or at least it doesn't come out right. Does anyone have any tips? I can extrude them but it's a pain in the arse figuring out the right ratio of xyz to make them extrude at the correct angle.
Do you have a picture of what you are trying to do?
@@Adventuresincreation I have sketches of my other profile of the fuselage, with b-splines intersecting along all of the sections which Is where my longerons will be. I managed to extrude them in part, but sweep would be so much easier because then I wouldn't have to do an extrude and pad to every longeron if for any reason I may choose to 3d print them instead of laser cutting.
@guerillagardener2237 can you post the sketch somewhere that I can access it then I will take a look for you
@@Adventuresincreation is there a way that I can send it directly to your channel on UA-cam. Where could I post the document.

How to make a cavity in lofted body
Have you tried creating a pocket in it?
Larger Icons help. Nothing is perfect.
I agree 👍
The curser could be smaller as it makes it difficult to see the item your using as you zip along the screen. This is what happens when you get older.
Lol, specific people with vision impairment requested the cursor be exactly that way. The rest of us can suffer a little too help them 😉
I was getting close to the end of lesson#5 and started having issues again.
That is very odd Gary, I have never had that happen to me. Not sure why the previous saves would not have worked.
Thanks
@@Adventuresincreation I just emailed you my file. Thanks
Found my mistakes, corrected as needed and finished to the end without any issues, wew!!!
@@garyweliver1870 well done, I am glad you were able to finish it
As I commented on your last video, I found that the front of the loft has two sides with a line down the middle (oddly enough the line being the sketch). For some reason slicers HATE this line and will mess up the 3d print job. Is there a way to remove the line? The only way I found to fix the issue is to export the file, open the exported file in FreeCAD and then export that new file again. Please tell us there is a better way. :)
You can select refine in the model data window.
@@Adventuresincreation Thank you and sorry if I'm jumping ahead..just found I'm creating art while watching your videos and need to print them. :)
@@OZtwo No worries.
why do my skecthes disaapear never to be seen again? The model tree is very complicated! they should SIMPLIFY
It's odd that your sketches are disappearing. I have never experienced that. The model tree is fairly simple if you minimize the individual bodies.
I'm trying to subdivide a small lidded storage box by adding small removeable part containers with an open top based upon something similar to this design:
ua-cam.com/video/VntGnLuwoeY/v-deo.html
But for those that will be inserted around the outside perimeter, the small containers I'm creating ideally would slope outward slightly (i.e. be slightly wider at the top in one X or Y direction) to fully use the space since the storage box slopes outward in the divided spaces around the perimeter.
@@Adventuresincreation I'll try creating the smaller dimensioned loft to attempt a subtraction. thanks!
Large icons great when viewing on ipad. Used Solid works for years as a hobby now I’m trying to absorb free cad.
@@royperkin1581 thanks! - You will find FreeCAD no problem if you already have Solidworks under your belt. - FreeCAD has a lot of great features.
I was working through these most excellent tutorials had a little hiccup took a break came back and realized that the loft icon does not perform the same function as the sweep icon problem solved. If you can't laugh at yourself somebody else will be more than happy to laugh at you.
Nice one, glad you are enjoying them.
