Smooth Slow Motion (using Sony Vegas Pro)

- Slow motion is a classic cinematic effect and the smoother the better. Here's how to get the desired result with a typical video camera that can shoot in 60i and has variable shutter speed.

BTW, for those asking about a frugal solution... goodervideo makes a great slo mo app that slows things down a LOT. Avisynth also has a vector slo mo function but my experience has been that avisynth is glitchy and more trouble than it's worth.

If your camera can shoot in 60fps, you don't need this technique. This method is for cameras that can only shoot in 60i (interlaced) and has variable shutter speed. This video shows how you can convert your footage into 60p allowing you slow down your footage as you would with any 60p footage.
@HuanTheIntelligent The difference is that many standard video cameras cannot shoot in 50 or 60 fps like yours can. This video explains how you can get 60fps if your camera can shoot 60i (interlaced) and has a manual shutter. The rest is easy.
I would like to thank you so much, thefrugalfilmmaker. This tutorial is phenomenal. This is kinda strange situation when I always thought I don't have a proper camera and I can't do a proper, solid slow motion without all those artifacts and so on. I have Sony HDR-SR 8 which shoots at 50i and 60i basically. I thought interlaced fps isn't good for slow motion, it has to be at least 50-60 progressive fps to make a proper slow mo. This tutorial proved me wrong. Nice slow mo can be achieved even with interlaced fps in help of software. Really clear, informative and easy tutorial. You brought me a joy of slow motion. Thanks.
@yuzz101 You can't shoot at 24fps and get this result. You have to plan ahead and know which shots you want to slow down later (just like with a film camera) and shoot them with the settings mentioned in the video.
Stretch the audio just like the video (CTRL+ drag). Right click on the audio, select "Properties", then check the "Lock to Stretch" box. Done!
@itonacho63 Yes, my Canon HFS100 does shoot in AVCHD. For the slow motion on just a certain part of the clip, I'd use the split command to cut out the clip you wanted to be slower, then follow the slo-mo process. When done, insert the clip into the gap created by your split.
@QCSamG I think I understand what is going on here. The final render isn't made to be played by itself, but put into your project and THEN rendered out with everything else. It should play normally this way.
Right click on the audio track. Click on "properties". Check the box "lock to stretch". This should give you the effect you want.
@pudidotdk You'd have to experiment, of course, but it probably goes without saying that the less movement your camera has to process, the better the result. I've done this with the on-camera subjects running and it looks great. A running camera operator might not work as well.
@JJBfilm When you go through the process, you turn your 60i footage into 60p footage. You are then putting that footage into a 30fps (29.97) timeline for the slow motion effect.
When I did this in vegas pro 8 a while back I didn't need to use the lossless codec and do two project files. You can do it with just one project and one render by setting the project frame rate and clip speed values, then rendering it at half resolution. There may be some other details but you can do it with just one pass.
@QCSamG Slowing sound is much easier. CTRL-drag to desired length, right click on audio and then 'properties' followed by ticking 'lock to stretch'. You can always separate your video and audio, process them accordingly and rejoin (or 'group') them later.
@lotsaEntertainment I run the AV outs from my camera to an analog to digital converter box, the Canopus ADVC-100. This box has a firewire output that I run into my computer. I then capture the footage live into my computer using Vegas' video capture utility, much like you would capture a DV tape.
Turn on CC, it's hilarious. Very nice tutorial, btw.

"Make sure your dearest methods interpolate fields near a frame rate... and change it to double Aunty Nancy "
You'll probably need some fancy After Effect plugin like Twixtor. The advantage of this method is that it's free, but takes preparation for it to work.
Finally after months, you are my HERO!
@zhatdude I'll put in on the list! Thanks for the suggestion.
Right click on the audio event, click on "properties" then check the box "lock to stretch". That should do it.
fortunately vegas home studio, very inexpensive nle, also allows you to set project to double ntsc, so don't worry if you can't afford the pro version. Thanks for the instruction, I'll be trying this soon!
This trick was first used by Robert Rodriguez when he shot his first movie with the Sony F900. It was not capable of 60p, but could do 60i. Can't remember the FX company that figured it out for him.
@FlippingAllDay Nope. You need 60i and an adjustable shutter. If your camera shoots at 60p then you don't need this video.
@thecuriouscurlz Apparently the Lagarith codec is windows-only. Sorry.
Awesome video man, thanks for sharing... Can't wait to try this on my videos :D
@wierdboo106 From what I understand, you need to be able to adjust the shutter. Have you tried it anyway? Experiment, then let us all know the results.
@TheSlimeBox I'll put it on the list! Thanks!
@thefrugalfilmmaker Whether it's one or two passes, going from 60i to 30p halves the resolution. The only way to get back to full resolution is to interpolate which sony vegas does with smart interpolation but that's the same whether doing it in one or two passes.
As it's supposed to be frugal, you can also use virtualdub to achieve this kind of slow motion. And yes, Vdub is free.
I would try going through the steps again. If you miss a step, it won't work.
Bytheway, I was working with wmv's and such, not 60 frame videos and the slow motion quality was smooth and not choppy. It worked so much better than twixtor just by the fact that it was incredibly fast to load the slow motion effect. Whereas Twixtor would be great if I could load edit a 2 minute video with it taking 30 minutes instead of having the effect take the amount of time to click "slow motion" and it being done on the spot.
Just wanted to let everybody know that the new version of Vegas Movie Studio (Version 12, July 2012) now supports 60fps. It retails for around $80-$100.
@Thepunisher62 Change the video format to "Video for Windows (.avi)" and then select the Logarith codec from the templates available.
7:18 - If I may pop in with just one correction, the lower-priced $50-dollar range version of Sony's editor, Movie Studio (taken over by MAGIX in 2016) does in fact import and edit 59.94fps Double NTSC footage (and true 60p)... I myself have Movie Studio 13 and work with 60fps footage with it (I realize this video is over five years old now and those older versions may not have done so - I am merely mentioning this to help out those who find this video post-2017'ish, heh..).
(I also recommend the Platinum version, for only 10 bucks more, that includes Blu-Ray Disc output, Stabilization and up to 200(!) Tracks)
[Note: I am not affiliated or compensated by Sony or MAGIX in any form, nor will I be, by posting this comment; I am merely an enthusiastic user of the program and like to help others with information, when I can]
@m00tmike That is correct, sir!
@minecraftdud You have to install it. Check earlier in the video to find out how.
Okay well sweet! Well do you know any other method to get the best slow motion possible without this then? Cause this is the smoothest I've ever seen man!
@troynorth I don't know FCP well enough (though I am forced to use it in school) to respond. I'll have to check it out.
@thefrugalfilmmaker I did some home work..The "i" in "60i" = interlaced. Each "frame" is actually 1/2 the video information... alternating lines of the horizontal video resolution. in "frame" 1, horizontal lines 1, 3, 5, etc... then in "frame" 2, horizontal lines 2, 4, 6, etc... When deinterlaced, a complete frame is produced... hence, 30 fps. And that is actually 29.97 fps, but everyone refers to it as 30 fps.....I got a little ocd on the subject...Thanks for the help..
So what you do is make it slow-mo then on the audio right click go to properties then you should see "Lock To Stretch". There you go.
Can you please make a tutorial for a camera mount on a bike? I enjoy bike riding AND film making, but I can't always hand-hold my camera because I need my hands for stability. If you could make one with a good shock absorber, and with the frugal style, that'd be very neat and I will totally make one. Thanks!
@LucidDreamTricks Can you do it in one pass without losing resolution?
love your tutorial
You're the best person on youtube, Thank you.
Hmmmm, I was under the impression, that when shooting video with a dslr, the shutter speed should be double that of frame rate? If I shoot at 720x1280 @60P, then slow it down in FCP X (50%) it's perfect slo mo.
Ron
tnx a lot! by any chance can you make a video on how to take a great shoot or best setting on how to shoot using canon dslr/lens 18-135mm or 85mm using. tnx
Hey, I once faced this problem and solved it, but now I can't, The video is in slow motion but the audio is not, the audio is looping in normal speed, I want the audio to be also in Slow motion, How??
pinnacle 21 ultimate now allows you to do this, it a technic I've used in earlier versions, but I've since bough as camera that shoots a 60FPS
PS
nice video im going to try this with my canon hg10, i can shoot 60i and 1000 shutter speed, i hope its work. Thank you so much
keep the ctrl buttom press when you extend the clip
Thanks for the tutorial. My camera is a canon HF 200 and I have FINAL CUT PRO but I'm fumbling around in the dark trying to make it work! Any chance you could give me a heads up using FCP? Keep up the good work, thanks
I solved it, It tuns out i was installing largarith lossless video codec wrong, but now it is done, but i am facing one problem, the sound is not in slow motion, it is normal. but the video is slow, why is that? I want the sound to be in slow motion too.
@kcfilms99 I'm sorry I don't. Any Mac people here that can help?
Hey FFM...Thanks for all your great videos, they are very helpful. Keep up the great work... I have a question.. You adjusted the format in the camera to 60i, however when you went to convert that same file it's properties said 29.97 fps...Did I miss something? Can you elaborate.. Thanks for sharing..
I followed step by step, but it didn't work (the final result was not smooth). I have the Vegas Pro 13 version and I shot my video with an iPhone 6. Does anyone have any clue?
I had done one slow motion with Canon 550D, which record in 50 fps. What I did is just open a project with 25fps in Sony Vegas, then import the video I recorded with 50fps, then slow it down. It did produce smooth slow motion also... is there any difference with what you had done?
Listen to this guy rufus, he knows what he's talking about.
I was about to type up "right click on the audio track "properties, check box "lock to stretch
But eh he got ya covered lol
i didn't understand sh*t, but i made it. thank uuuuu
i dont get the point why i should render this 2 times?
Yo! Could anyone answer this question for me? I own a GoPro HD HERO2 and was wondering if I would be able to do this at 60FPS? I am a little confused on what he means when he says interlaced frames. I am just starting to get into editing and this is the best slow motion I've ever seen for me using Sony Vegas. Help?
When i try to stretch out the audio, the video automaticly stretches with it, and i can not find the 'Audio Properties' anyhwere, not to mention the 'Lock to stretch' box.
60fps is best 30 might always blur of pixelate, make sure to right click each clip and disable resample loop and ? i think multisample just make sure they are all off
I wonder if it will work if you slow it down even more? Will it still be smooth at 0.1 speed?
Hey it's a missionary! I will be entering the MTC in July for Argentina!
sir how to render 1080p 24fps scene and 720p 60fps(slow motion) scene in one video....plz plz plz help sir
It works really good but the sound doesnt work? its the same as the begining
Whats the difference from this method, to simply changing the 60fps original file into half speed 30fps in a 30fps project? It's also smooth af. Thanks for the video.
If I may pop in to answer, this method (the first step of which essentially removes the Interlacing of footage) was more for cameras that originally produced an Interlaced format as output (eg. 60i). Slowing down the framerate playback for interlaced footage appears 'choppier' than doing Slow Motion on already-progressive footage (eg. 60p), such as clips from modern cameras or game recordings done directly on the PC. You are correct, working from originally-progressive footage, the first step is not required and can be 'slowed down' in Movie Studio/Vegas Pro directly, just fine.
Nice, thanks a lot!! Way better then use "Velocity" on video, this is much more smoother!!!
I think frame sampling and frame blending are the better types of slow motion.
Is it good, when I have got 1080p in 30 fps and 720p in 60 fps, can i used 720? Is it good or bad.?
This was really helpful! I'm just curious, what's the significance of the lagarith lossless video codec?
So, Scott... what's a BofM carrying dude doing in this video? Love your channel. Have production company of my own and noticed that we might have one more thing in common. True that?
i installed lagarith losseless video codec but doesnt come in sony vegas pro
Did you install it?
What are the odds? Love your videos! If you still use Vegas Pro (which I've just switched back to after 2 years of Adobe PP CS5-and hating almost every minute of...), who would you recommend for advanced Vegas Pro tutorials. I learned Premiere Pro via lynda.com but no such tutorials are available for Vegas Pro (especially VP12)? Thanks in advance.
same problem, can't find the lagarith at my template. im using sony vegas pro 8
I have followed all the steps and repeated several times but always got bad results. I don't get what is wrong...I'm using Sony Vegas Pro 9, Canon legria 50i with 1/1000 shutter as suggested. I went to the website you suggested to revise all the steps but still nothing. Any further tips?
PS
Thank you anyway, I learned a lot more about Sony Vegas :)

My camera doesn't have any option to set the frame rate? What do I do?
Great tutorial. Thanks, boss.
I have a video clip recorded a 30fps, i want to slow it down, so i stretch it, is there a way to make it so each frame blends into the next to make it look smoother?
@thefrugalfilmmaker Nice! So am I! I'm new to your channel but I really like your tips. Where can I see the stuff you have worked on?
just hold down CTRL and then extend the video clip for slow motion.
Hey need help here.. what if my camera records at 50p could i reduce it to 25fps or 23.497 in AE? Hope you would find time to reply ...
Thanks
what if i downloaded 1080p 30 fps video from youtube and i wanna make it smooth as this tut says,is i possible ?
+marked150 Speed Option
I right click and select velocity aint that the same thing ?
Worked perfectly thanks much.
I remember using power director and having the slow motion be very smooth, computer blew up and had to reinstall, tried the slow motion and now it was the choppy slow-mo, I know I downloaded a codec pack, but I forget what. I now have sony vegas cause PD is complete crap by comparison. and I got twixtor. I'm like, wait a minute why is twixtor creating such a huge burden on my machine. I had this awesome effect with slow mo on Power Director, no problems, Does anyone know what it could have been?
@phillozoph50 Yep!
Thanks! this im looking for, for me to make a smooth slow mo, video using SOny vegas 8.. though it consumes alot of time rendering a video clip
@Legokink1 CANON VIXIA HFS100!
Please do a tutorial for Sherlock holmes credit effect in sony Vegas pro please....
I have the program, downloaded and installed, but i still cant seem to find it. I have sony vegas pro 11. any tips?
Hey, I'm having a problem with the largarith video codec, when i install it and try to render the video, i dont find the largarith lossless video codec in the video format in custom, what should i do? Help!!
WuSupSup,The problem I was facing is the installing of the codec, I solved it by closing every single background program before i installed it, You're welcome, SupSup Out
Thanx my slow mo came out perfect thumbs up!!
Very nice video! Helped me a lot thks .
@thefrugalfilmmaker I did this but after i render the video, when ,I play it in windows media player, the sound goes like the original and the vide is slowed down even more than how i slowed it in vegas??:S
''Hold the book the way that anyone can see we are mormons...''
Will 60fps work just in general? I'm still confused on what it means when the frames are interlaced.
