A Doctor, when you walk in their office should always let you sit and rest for five minutes. If they’re asking you questions tell them to come back and give you time to calm down. I have the white coat syndrome. Every time I go to the doctors my blood pressure is high at home it’s fine.

I have exactly the same problem. It would be nice if some expert talked about this white coat syndrome to help us with our BP.

I have htn, and can testify to certain behaviors that have lowered my pressure drastically. Sitting still, breathing in and out evenly for 3 minutes, clearing my mind, and going from 150/90 to 120/72 after practicing that.

This is exactly what I've found also. I can bring mine down from 140/90 to 122/78 in about 4 minutes by using this technique. Focusing on the breath and nothing else is the key for me. I can get overly agitated by thinking about politics, etc., which can immediately raise my blood pressure.

Taking my blood pressure automatically raised my worry level so I did some research. I read that emptying your bladder, and sitting relaxed, back in the chair with your feet flat on the ground makes a difference when taking your blood pressure, so I tried it. I was actually stunned by the difference it made. So that with the breathing gives me a more realistic reading.

If you extend the exhale in the box breathing technique, it's even more effective, because when you exhale, your body secretes a chemical that slows your heart rate. So I breathe in for 4 seconds, hold it for 4 seconds, then exhale for 12 seconds. This is what I do when I have panic attacks.

Like a pilots checklist before takeoff...
No Doctors office BP checks home readings best No rush no white coat syndrome
Use cuff machine not wrist ones
    Go to bathroom if needed
    Don't be cold
    No coffee before
    No pets around kids nearby
    Sit quietly 5 min
Breath in 5 secs hold 5
    Exhale 8 5x
    Think happy thoughts
    Keep cuff at heart level
Sit up straight feet flat on the floor
Discard 1st reading and wait 3 min repeat
    Do again and compare
And as my former GP said "Stop taking your BP too often once a week enough or you'll drive it nuts"
Lower stress, exercise, eat right, don't smoke all good too

      I agree with 99% ..
Apply all of these steps, but take your BP at 5 mins, 10 mins & 15 mins. Twice a day, for two weeks, morning & night. Then find your average and that will be your truest BP.

My vitals were 127/70 65. The temp nurse was 60 years old and over weight. My doctor now takes my vitals. No meds everything good.

I developed a breathing technique that involves a specific ratio of 1-4. That is, the inhalation is a specific time and the exhalation is 4 times the inhalation. I've been using a metronome for timing. I started with the inhalation at 4 seconds and the exhalation is 16 seconds. I am now at 6 seconds in and 24 seconds out. I do this twice a day for 15 to 20 minutes each time. The breath needs to be smooth to full lung inhalation and slow smooth exhalation to clear the lungs. After the session I relax for about 3 to 5 minutes before checking the BP. It's important that the body and the heart be relaxed before the BP is taken or it won't be as accurate as possible. My readings tend to be in the low 120s/68-9 to high to mid-teens 115/68. When the BP goes up it is due an external or internal factor such as being cold (I think that's why hospitals and doctor's offices are kept cold), having to urinate, pain or some other physical problem. Try it. I think you'll like it.
