  • Senator Cruz, let me introduce to you a group of nurses and working class Americans who, in many cases, are working two jobs and over 40 hours a week just to pay off their student debt and pay for the basic necessities of life. No, they are not slackers. They deserve relief.

I can't believe he said "get off the bong!" OMG! I have worked as an independent professional in 25 counties of my state! But I had the double whammy of raising a daughter with CF who passed the life-long limit of Blue Cross when she was 16, and still required a double-lung transplant in her 20s...and because her dad was killed in a car accident when we were all very young (she was 4 at the time)...it was on just me! So I fell for the higher education loan programs as a way to make things easier with professional wages. All I did was doom us into a trap I never escaped before she died at age 48 last year. My loans have been in default twice and I have lifted them out twice. I was promised the fees involved would be forgiven but they weren't. I owe three times what I originally borrowed and though I filed a medical bankruptcy once was unable to include them. All of the stressful damage in my life comes from one reality only...that I was born in a trickle down judgemental country with people like Cruz at the helm who have not one iota of understanding when they open their ignorant mouths.

Nursing *is* difficult. The image of the nurse that takes a BP and weight in a doctor’s office is essentially out of date. That person now might be a CNA. Hospital nurses have tough jobs. No room for mistakes, 12 hour shifts, on your feet most of the shift, often not getting a chance to eat during the 12 hours, and sometimes scrambling to get in a pee break. The ability of a 2 year RN to compete for a decent-paying job with a 4 year BSN is terrible. And it’s not like nurses are exceptionally well compensated. I hope the next time you’re in a hospital, you treat your nurse well. They are the ones that can arrange for the pain medication or can alert the attending to your deteriorating condition. Anyone that bad mouths hospital nurses in general should have to self treat the next time he or she is in acute medical distress.

Every company is structured like a pyramid, with a reliance on a large number of "slackers" to function and the higher you scale the pyramid, the less room there is.
The system is designed to keep the bottom of the pyramid as full as possible.
I tried to explain this to somebody once and they seriously told me everyone should start their own company if they were smart. My mom tried to start a pizzeria and lost over $20,000 back in the early 2000's because she wasn't a local and the people in that area didn't take to out of towners. The choice is clear - we can forgive student loan debt, or we can destroy the economic future of America. People must not be forced to continue repaying student loans because it discourages higher education, discourages career mobility, discourages entrepreneurship, discourages home buying, discourages investing and saving. We are taking away resources from the people that power America. We are cutting off our own legs to feed investors and wealthy institutions.
Ted Cruz wants to turn this into a morality argument about who deserves what and how poor people are lesser human beings. It is distasteful and cruel, as is typical for Ted, but more importantly it is also a stupid and irrelevant argument. My wife is a hard working doctor (is there another kind), and she’s otherwise ready to retire now, except that she still owes over $60,000 in student loans. It’s pretty insane.
Most people attending medical school have family money. The few who don’t are expected to take out between $100,000-$200,000 loans to cover the costs. The poorer you are, the more loans you need.
We’re poor, so my wife needed all of them! She’s already paid off over $80,000, but NONE has gone towards the principal. She basically still owes the same amount today as she took out in loans decades ago.
Of course you could say she deserved it because of her choices. For example, she became one of the lowest paid doctors in the country, as a family practice doctor (primary care). If she had made a smarter decision, she could have chosen to become a surgeon or neurologist that get paid 2-3 times more.
I guess Mr. Cruz would say it’s her own damn fault for wanting to interact and help people with all different problems. In fact half the doctors in our country are primary care doctors. So I guess they are all dumb slackers, too.

I struggled for years, but did manage to pay off those student loans! They were so much lower then, but it still took from my overall meager earnings to support my kids. My eldest daughter is almost 40. She has not been able to go to college, nor has my other daughter. Their struggles are so much more than even mine! I believe that every person in America should be awarded a good education, free of the crippling debt to obtain it, and free them up to pursue a career of choice, and one that affords a decent living. We are not the "Land of the Free!!" But rather we are the land of the enslaved, serving only for the greater good of their capitalist slave owners!!

My husband and I both had student debt when we got out of school. We struggled to get out from under it. We both worked two jobs, put off buying a house, put off buying a car, put off buying furniture (slept on the floor), never bought a book, never went to see a movie, never went out to eat. And saving anything? You gotta be kidding me, right? We couldn't afford to eat, we certainly save anything. We finally both got the debt paid off, but life really sucked until we did--we both still felt like we were starving students. I am not in the least bit upset that we are now forgiving student loans. We SHOULD do that. We SHOULD make college free for anyone who wants to attend. Republicans think it's going to cost too much money. Okay. How much money do we lose when people can't buy anything and can't save anything? How much do we lose when our population is uneducated and we can't compete globally? How much do we lose when we don't have enough nurses, teachers, doctors, engineers, and even lawyers? But it won't be the rich Republicans suffering. It will be you and me. Vote them out and replace with someone who gives a damn about YOU.

@@jakeragsdale Yes! I like this two-prong approach you’ve come up with. We can, and should help relieve people of these debts that will weigh them down for decades, but also we can and should lean on colleges to decrease their outrageous prices.
Personally, I think we should no longer allow them to force us to take classes that we don’t need or want. It’s obviously a thinly veiled excuse to get more money by dragging out the number of semesters they can get paid for, but they say it’s for the purpose of, “making well rounded people.” As if anyone buys that nonsense.

My niece's husband while in medical school, had to pay $1,000 for a required test at the end of a semester. It was not his only end of semester test. They were probably all $1,000 per test. In order to afford to pay off student debt and just live very simply after graduating, he would have to make $200,000 per year to pay off student loans. There is no way higher education should be so expensive. We may want to find out who is profiting so highly at the schools. The Federal interest rate should be lowered also.

After all the hard work to get these degrees, you’d think that it’d get you a good high-paying job. Nope. The job he has is struggling, doesn’t pay enough, and that’s NOT EVEN including the student loans on his back.
It just sucks because so many people hate low-paid workers at lower level jobs, and are like “You need an education to get a better job, so go to college”. But it doesn’t fucking matter because I know so many people who DID go to college, they had to meet ALL these requirements to get a certain position, and yet despite this, their job STILL treats them like shit and pays them poorly.
And these nurses are another great example. Look at these people who took SO many years to get the requirements needed to become nurses and look where they are now. Even these people in their 30s and 40s who STILL can’t afford a decent living. I'm wondering. When was the last time Cruz asked ordinary people about their lives and predicament? 6% interest isn't a huge amount. That's the rate student loans have been capped at in the UK. The difference is how the payments are structured. I pay around $250 a month on around $60,000 of debt for my UK law degree. The first $30,000 or so isn't counted for repayments. If you earn less than that, you pay back nothing. Repayments are only calculated on the remainder of your annual earnings. After 30 years, anything outstanding is forgiven.

    • @santoshnarayana7879
      @santoshnarayana7879 Рік тому +1

Well Federal Student loans are between 4.99% - 7.54% and they are a Compounded Interest Daily. Here is an example I found about how federal student loans are calculated:
Even though student loan rates are expressed as an annual rate, the interest is usually compounded daily. On a $10,000 loan, you might think that a 4.45% interest rate would mean $445 paid in interest during the year, but that’s not the case.
Instead, your annual rate is divided by 365, to get your daily interest rate. So, in the above example, you’d be charged an interest rate of 0.012% each day. At the end of your first day, your interest charge totals $1.20 and it’s added to the $10,000. On the following day, your interest is calculated on $10,001.20. At the end of the year, you’ll pay a total of $455.02 in interest - providing the lender with an extra $10.02 just because of the way interest is compounded.

The most criminal thing I saw was the sales job those counselors did on the students they were supposed to be helping. Encouraging them to apply for as much loan money as possible, telling them that they'd get the loan balance left after paying tuition 'refunded' to them and then it was their money to do what they wanted to with. Not a word about paying back the loans nor only borrowing what they really needed from semester to semester. I worked for a state technical college which cost about $ 1500 a semester for full-time tuition. It wasn't unusual to see students get $7000 to $10000 worth of loans every semester, on top of PELL Grants and state need-based grants.
