- In this tutorial I will show you how to create a portable Windows USB flash drive or external HDD. You'll be able to plug this drive into any computer an use your own Windows installation off of your USB drive. This will work for Windows 10, 8.1, 8 and 7.

on the page for choosing BIOS you first had BIOS, then UEFI. But there was a 3rd option for both. Can you please explain that choice a little more? Thank you.

I need this to test whether or not my ancient PC can handle Win10 but with USB2.0 speeds I think I won't be able to tell but I guess it's worth a shot, I've been wanting to try Win10 anyways.

It was driving me crazy, I was trying to do this but kept getting some error about Enterprise Edition (which was different from the one you showed) even when I was trying to do Home Edition, then it hit me, my LAPTOP is running Enterprise Edition, copied the ISO and WinToUSB installer over to my desktop running 8.1 Home and have now started the process of creating the bootable flash drive

what are the things to do after u install it to a external hard drive
When I go to boot option to choose boot from USB, I don’t get that, it shows too many boot paths and when I press the usb it opens more to choose which means files that are in the usb.. idk why

I been using Puppy Linux live usb cause the hard drive on this laptop crashed --read only file system issues...
But the wife goes bonkers not being able to work on a windows environment ... hence for peace of mind--mine, I will make use your tutorial.

No. But I use Puppy Linux. You can install Word or LibreOffice though

I am using enterprise mode with wintousb and i'm kinda stuck when i use mbr for bios and uefi it is always showing windows installation not sucessful .

So my hard disk got broken i had fixed it by installing windows into a USB since there were crap ton of error while making it bootable and I transfered my iso to my hard drive and if I remove the pendrive while it restarts will I get a windows any idea

I tried as an experiment on old usb 2.0 32gb flashdrive and it's taking forever to load the OS, so I just unplugged it! One should experiment on usb 3.1+
@@raminiumashankar5612 i had installed it on Sandisk Cruzer Blade USB 2.0 32GB Drive , it took a long time at first boot, about 30-60 minutes, the oobe and preparing things was a little fast, drivers worked correclty and windows was automatically activated

Use legacy, 16GB might be cutting it but as long as it USB 3.0 it should be ok

Yes I believe this can be uses a normal storage device.

I need help, not much after it started formatting the USB, WinToUSB caused an unknown problem, now I can't use the USB, it's not detected anymore and sometimes it gives error code 10 while other times it's giving error code 43, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers several time without success among other things that didn't work, if you know how to fix this issue then please help.

Why is it not working with a 8 gb pen drive. It says not enough space. The iso file is only 4.5 gb. Is not 8 gb enough?

I usually divide my laptop internal ssd drive into two parts: C (for OS) and D (for my files). Can I do the same with the portable windows on my external ssd drive?
Also if I plug into another computer can I use the ssd drive just as a normal external drive and accessing my files without booting from the portable windows?
My idea is to divide 2tb external ssd drive into 200gb and 1800gb partitions. Install the portable windows on to 200gb (os partition) and leave 1,8tb space to be used as external space for my regular computer and also as drive D: for my portable windows. Do u think that will work ?

@@yusufmakonge932 yes, I did all that mentioned above and works as a charm. You have to instal the Windows first and format the whole ssd drive during the process. After that boot from the portable windows and divide the disk the way u like. Honestly I don’t see too much use of the portable windows because I use mostly my laptop. Some time I travel light and then I take this ssd with portable windows just in case if I need my programs (but I never needed it). I will probably delete this portable Windows and regain the space for my needs.

If you install new drivers or programs on the usb booted windows, will they stay next time you boot or they will be gone and windows will boot fresh every time?

After installing, how do you eject the hard drive safely? Do you just unplug it or follow the same process through boot again to get back?
Make sure your computer is turned off, and just unplugging it will be okay. Don't unplug it while your computer is on though
To those people who its not working, the windows not booting up, try to select into bios boot uefi mode only.

I have a portable hard drive with important files on it. Will creating the boot media on that portable drive wipe it clean? Will I lose the other files currently on the portable drive if I use it to create boot media?
Yes, Win2USB formats the drive before installing Windows. So you'll lose all your data.

If you use an solid state drive with a usb adapter to install Windows on, will it run the same on the usb as if you ran the drive internally in the computer?
It will run a bit slower than if it was connected to SATA internally in the PC due to the slower read and write speeds of USB. However performance should still be relatively good.

That will just create an install USB, not a portable Windows that you can boot to and use.
@@TheHowToGuy123 okay thx. By the way, I followed your tutorial because I have a big problem with my PC : I constantly run into "critical_process_died" error at boot, and NOTHING I tried worked. So I wanted to reset it to factory settings, howver I wanted to get back my data before.
Unfortunately, even by following your tutorial, when Windows is launched from the USB it's not possible to install : it asks me where I want to install Windows, and it's impossible to select any partition.
From what I explained, would you have any answer to help me ?

Did everything as you said, but after creating and plugging it in pc and booting from it it shows winload.exe error even thou it's a fresh installation
Your ISO file got corrupted, so try again.
One question: the USB has an IP of its own? Different from the "original" windows on host pc?
probably late for this but the WAN ip is that of your modem, and the local IP is assigned to your network device's MAC address by your router or DHCP server(making it the same one in this case), if not using DHCP, the IP address is whatever you manually set it to

Yes you can ! Just plug it in and try to access the boot menu of the computer ! It can be any of the Function keys on the keyboard or Esc key or Delete key

What about the Windows license. I guess you can activate it, BUT when you boot the portable drive in another computer it will detect the hardware change and Windows WILL NOT BE activated anymore……

the reason why it is not recognizing your main hard drive because your main disk is marked as "Offline", you can view those drives and change letters using Disk Management

The reason why i installed windows on the ex hard driv was because my pc had a problem with booting up it would say a message like windows failesd to start a recent software or hardware change might be the cause then it gave me three steps to follow insert windows installation disk restart the pc select language then choose repair my pc. however I just ended up fllowing this viodeo and istalling windows 10 there was no repair my pc or anything like that. I'm pretty sure you can skip it as even though windows 10 will be inactivated it will still work just fine if you don't mind having way less personalization settings

Did you go into bios and change the boot order, or go into the boot menu and choose your USB/external storage
If your using Lenovo laptops, usually you have to hold Rn and f2 to get into bios, and fn f12 to get into boot menu
While hp uses the escape key and then there are options after that

Windows 11 requires at least a 64 GB storage device. You might be able to get away with Windows 10 though.

if you wanna do a Linux Bootable look for a program called Rufus, that is the WinToUSB of Linux.

USB drive too slow for Window10? I haven't tested Windows10 on a USB so Im going to accept that it is infact not some other issue specific to the video presenter's system.
Yet I run Linux (any distro) from a Live USB with no problems, infact that is how one actually one of the options for installing Linux from a USB to a HD (they actually invite testing it first that way), but you can still have your USB Linux incase you want to run it temporarily on other machiens that you may not want to distrub by installing, use a diagnostic or rescue.
That being said: I wonder what is so differnet about Windows10 that supposedly drags on USB? is this a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port? that can certianly be a cause of performance issues. But then again, my Linux experience has also been on USB 2 and older computers with probably way slower processors than the one the presnter has (Lubuntu 18.04 on a 1999 HP Dekspro 733mhz Pentium III w/ 384MB RAM and USB 1/USB 2, with PATA/SATA converters and 2x 2TB WD HDs is still my video file server workhorse to this day ). I've always ran the Live USB first before upgrading as a performance test through different versions starting with Ubuntu 8, 10, 12, 16, progressively until 18 (the last 32bit version). Needless to say my i3, i5, and i7 systems definitely run the current 64bit versions off the USB as well (currently Lubuntu 20.04 and Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora as well no problems running off USB).

Yes. Its actually way easier as basically all linux distros allow you to do this out of the box. All you need to do is make a bootable linux USB with rufus. Then boot to the USB. Then instead of installing the OS to a hard disk, click try out linux.
