How To Make Amp Sims Sound More Realistic.

  • In this video, I look at how to make amp sims sound more realistic.
    There is so much choice out there for guitar amp simulators, I hear ofter people say that amp sims do not sound or feel like a real guitar amp. My trick to remedy this is to use a Tube Screamer-style pedal before the amp. In this video, I look at an Ibanez Tube Screamer, a Xotic BB Preamp, and a Jam Pedals Double Dreamer.

    HX Stomp amp sim user here: my trick is this. I use a really clean amp-in-a-box style overdrive stacked with either a Blues Breaker or Klon and run that into my Empress compressor for some super light compression. Then it hits my relatively clean amp sim in the stomp. I use a separate amp head and IR block. Then I put a little room reverb to taste after to simulate amp in a room. It's pretty dang convincing, especially as opposed to if I just used the amp sim on its own.

    Hi Paul, always like your vids and tx again for this. I run a variety of setups: 1) Line6 pod go into a Focusrite and using Reaper as DAW on PC, or 2) Marshall combo via 2-Notes captor instead of pod go into same setup. I'm an elect. eng. by training so glad to hear someone actually mention aliasing. I find with all this digital processing there always seems to be a lot of high-end fizz and to lesser extent, low-end flub and prob. no doubt due to aliasing. I usually put a low+hi cut filter at end of my podgo chain (as per Jason Sadites vids explain) and add a similar filter and low compression cockos plugins in the chain in Reaper. Seems to sound ok but i'm completely self taught and only going by what i've learnt over the years on UA-cam. Any recommendations re. setting up this kind of rigs would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise tx again and hi from Brisbane, Oz.

In addition, you can swap out your sound later. I would love to see if there is anything useful in Logic Pro X for guitar- or ways to make it useful

    Excellent video and excellent playing and very well explained.
    Question Please:
    I bought last week a modeler pedal (Valeton GP-200) and it sound's great on many UA-cam demos. However, it sound's terrible plugging it into my console. (Amp & Cab sims on or off....still terrible).
    My friend's Line 6 PodGo also sounds terrible into a mixer. Do modeler pedals sound better if going direct into a DAW? There must be some reason both my GP-200 and the PodGo sound really bad into a mixer. (Note: It's a pro level mixer, not budget). We tried both mixer line inputs and DI box, doesn't seem to matter.
    I am very frustrated I cannot get a decent sound, when I've seen both these units sound great in many unbiased demos...Excellent video as always. Thanks.

    • @starchild692
      @starchild692 Рік тому +2

      I used to connect the pedal right to the interface but recently I added an active DI.
      Aside from a tiny bit of low mid frequencies increase I didn't notice a significant difference really .
      It also depends on your interface if it's a decent one with HiZ input a DI won't make a big difference.

    Thanks for the video Paul!
    Just to ensure I got the takeaway right - you're saying that putting an analog drive pedal - TS specifically - in front of a digital amp sim will help remove the digital aliasing/artifacts? Will using built in drive simulations (say within the AXE-FX) have the same outcome or does it need to be an external analog drive?

    • @TheStudioRats
      @TheStudioRats  Рік тому

      I don’t think the Axe Fx needs to do that. It sounds great to my ears and I can’t hear any of the issues I talked about in the video. However I did a gig on Saturday with an axe fx 3 and I used a vertex dumble style pedal for the drive tones and really liked it, but I could have used the internal drives and been just as happy.

      @@TheStudioRats - thanks Paul!
      Let me rephrase to get to my actual question - is it an analog circuit that "helps solve the digital aliasing" - or is a TS circuit that helps a Marshall style digital amp sim - or is it more about the low frequency rolloff that benefits the Marshall amp sim?
      That P90 semi-hollow Strat is PHENOMENAL!!!! That's one of my all-time favorites I've ever seen!

    Given the Tube Screamer is a relatively simple bit of equipment (compared to an amp) would it be reasonable to assume a high quality Tube Screamer emulation such as the UAD plugin (or even a pedal like what's in Amplitube) achieve a similar result?

I have a ditto in the loop and lay down a phrase with channel A2 (no delay) and start looping it. My experience with sims is that you need a healthy input level, I have use a tube microphone pre-amp by Art or Beheringer and set the input on the tube just before it breaks up, then be sure to do the gain staging on the output and input on your pc right. You will now have a tube saturated guitar tone, which is nice because you have more harmonic overtones. I have most guitar amp sims and TH3 I found is the best for me, I also think that amplitube sounds good but is more tedious to work with and they also try to sell their software by limiting options in the UI..

  • @OrangeMicMusic
    @OrangeMicMusic Рік тому +1

    No disrespect with your theory, but I believe it's wrong.
    That aliasing sound you're demonstrating around 1:36-1:39 it happens with all hi-gain tube amps or pedals, when the bass is turned up too much.
    Hence the "cure all solution" for the famous Rectifier chugging riffs is to use a boost pedal (with the gain turned all the way down) to tighten the lows and to get rid of that flubby-wooshy sound .
    Almost all my hi-gain tube amps or pedals are "suffering" from that sound. Anyone can try it and hear for himself/herself :)

      you can reduce the latency at a cost of your CPU utilization. The more or heavier VST will cause some unwanted sound when your CPU load reach its limit. You just need to find the right sweet spot when you do live monitoring. help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/articles/209072289-How-to-reduce-latency

    • @PainterDans
      @PainterDans Рік тому +1

      Go into the settings for your interface and adjust your latency settings, like your sample rate, try 128. The lower the better, If you hear pops and clicks you went too low for your interface and or computer, you will have go up a little ata time until the noise goes away

    • @peeemm2032
      @peeemm2032 Рік тому +1

      I think a lot of people maybe blame latency, when the problem may be elsewhere? It's probably not too difficult to get sub 10ms latency with a decent CPU and setup. Sounds travels at 330m/s, so 10ms worth of latency is the equivalent of standard about 3m (10ft) in front of your speaker cab. Don't hear too many guitarists complaining about latency when they're standing on stage in front of a guitar amp. Wondering if the problem with feel might be more about the emulation than latency? Some just seem to sound flat and dull....

Their Vox, Recto and Ampeg sims are somewhat better in this regard. Basically your answer is to use analog dirt....? ;)

  • @Amusiastudio

    Nice tip but you still have aliasing.

  • @GCKelloch
    @GCKelloch 4 місяці тому

    All due respect, and I admire youe playing, but adding more harmonics b4 an amp sim can only increase potential aliasing. I haven't used the sim in this video, but most other amp sims use oversampling to elmilinate aliasing. It's very unlikely ther will be audible alising in sim running internally at say 384kHz no matter how much staturation occurs. I don't think aliasing is what we are hearing with this sim, and it would decrease as the notes die out because less high harmonics are generated. It sounds more like the graininess of a low biased preamp tube, amp section crossover distortion, or AC ripple intermodulation-- all of which are present in real amps.
