I'll throw something in here. I work at a breakdown company and for reliability idler cars are better new cars are worse for it. It takes alot to kill an old car.
What about the middle of the road priced cars like 2010-2013 polos, golfs, fiestas ect I think a video on this would be helpful because there’s a lot of people are looking to find cars that have deprecated but still not too old and have small mileage would love to hear your opinion on this
I was also thinking this during but didn't want to complicate much more - it's a similar story to this though, if they've hit a good stage of depreciation & don't have reliability horror stories then well worth it!
the work ethic is second to nonee, quality content with genuine effort being put in. very rare to see, love the videos bro. just got my first e92 im gassedd
Cars With JB e92 330i, ddn’t want extra turbo issues so stuck with the 3L 330i but got a 335i dual exhaust conversion so looks just as badboy😁 love the videos bro!!!
Cars With JB insurance is the biggest scam out there but whatever we just have to live in it. my address is London too so its extra bad for me but we just got a play the game, had a 1.4 golf for a year but just sold it and got an e92. ur videos wouldve blessed me differently if i had come across them before i insured my first car but whatever we live and we learn ahah
i guess Im randomly asking but does someone know a trick to get back into an instagram account? I was stupid forgot the password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
My first car is the family Rover 800 si auto. It sounds like a tractor, the central locking is busted, the back door is sticky, there's rust, the windows get stuck and it struggles to get to 4th gear. But as much as i complain about it I wouldn't have had any other 1st car. I've never had an accident except with a wall (cracked front bumper) and a tree branch ( through my mirror) both getting into the same car park within my first 2 months on the road and I'm so glad it wasn't a new car.
No other car gave me the same emotions as my Ford Fiesta 2005 😊 I love it. It's a small one, not much power but good enough to go from A to B without spending too much, good fuel efficiency. I've gone literally everywhere with it, to the beach, to the mountain... even with snow 😂
I know the feeling man, it's that cheap first car feeling! Still haven't loved a car like I loved my Skoda, same as you I took it everywhere and it kept on going 🤙🏽
From experience I am 19 and passed my driving test when I almost turned 18. So I have 1 years no claims. Being an odd car enthusiast I have definitely annoyed my dad about the amount of cars I have changed lol because I was never happy with what car I own due to my profession. I own a sports and prestige car dealership with my dad. In the 15 months since I have passed my test, I have changed 5 cars and now I’m on my 6th but now I am happy with what I have and have committed to myself and my dad I won’t sell it till I’m 21 lol. My first car was a 2002 Toyota Yaris 1.0 5dr Manual which I got for £200. Then I was over the moon and my dad surprised me with practically my favourite car to modify (tastefully with no performance mods). That was a 2003 BMW e46 318i SE 5dr Manual with an M Sport Interior which was later refused to insure by my insurance!!! Even though they happily covered me for 2 weeks. Then I bought my 2nd most favourite car I have owned being my 2010 VW Polo Moda 3dr 1.2 3dr. After 4 months I later sold it to help me invest some funds to add some input into our business (best decision I have made). Then I got the most fun car I have ever owned yet the most unreliable car ever. That was a 2005 Peugeot 206cc 1.6 16v Quicksilver. Used to drive well until it’s clutch decided to catch fire while I was driving. Made an £800 loss on the car and sold it for a £140 scrap price. Then I got an ep2 2003 Honda Civic 1.6 Sport Auto 3dr which I used for motorway drives. Lovely car which I bonded too and bought a whole ep3 type r kit for but sadly never got too fitting it. Lastly recently I have settled my car selling obsession and bought my bargain 2015 Corsa Limited Edition 3dr with 27k miles for £2250! Well that’s my story so far and till I’m 21 I’m not selling my Corsa. I hope to whoever reads this doesn’t follow my footsteps lol. In the future I hope to buy a MK7 Golf GTI, Scirocco R, E46/E92 M3 or a Toyota GT86 when I’m 21. Well then I will update this car list on this channel as I love this channel.
@@weeevilswine To be honest it's a great and solid car. Every time I look at mine when approaching or locking it, I cannot seem to stop myself each time from smiling at it. It delivers stunning unrivalled looks I believe in this sector. Mine is a 1.2 petrol non turbo with 72 horse power but it doesn't feel lacking in power. Drives comfortablely on the motorway. Mine is a high Specification car as it has blind spot monitoring, light keep assist, adaptive radar cruise control, front and rear Parking sensors and dozing off thingy detection lol. For the money I paid, once again it is unrivalled to have this much safety and convenience features in this vehicle sector. I simply love it. My vehicle is red, with the black accents like roof, front grill and door mirrors with gloss black interior trim pieces. Everyone who wants a vehicle which can only be 4 years old, the latest shape car for less than £3000 (now I admit mine at £2275 was a bargain), should test drive this vehicle and stay patient to find such a good Corsa E
I’m nearly 16 atm and I fear that I’m going to be like you because on gta5 I buy news cars and when I get bored with them and can’t be bothered to earn money again I just sell them and get a new car. I’m hoping to get a 1.4 litre corsa as a first car, but doubt it because of the insurance
I had a shit box fiesta as my first car, the amount of times I banged the bumpers etc. I’m glad I didn’t have an expensive car as my first, for the simple reason that even though I’d passed my test I still had so much to learn
I look at it this way.. Me and my best mate both bought a car around the same time (within months of each other). Not first cars but our second cars. He bought brand new. I bought old (1999). In the 5 years of our ownership, I have still spent less on driving with everything combined, than he did on just buying the brand new car. That's everything to do with driving. Cost of car, tax, insurance, petrol, repairs, everything combined over 5 years with my 20 year old car still hasn't equalled the cost of his brand new insignia. I still love my car endlessly after 5 years and he cant wait to get out of his one! Of course I remind him of this every time we argue over who's car is better! Another brilliantly researched and well put together video!
Haha love it - and key to this as well is that insignia will have depreciated pretty significantly so when he does get out of it someone else gets to reap the rewards!
Still on my first car. 2003 Fiat Punto, had it six years and it's been solid. It's bare bones basic, doesn't even had a rev counter, but it has character 🚗💨
congrats!!!! i just got myself a 2020 nissan versa sv. i'm a toyota person but i think I dropped the gun too fast and this is what i ended up leaving the lot with, lol i'm grateful though, its the perfect car for me. all glory to god! I like these kind of videos. i have videos of my car on my channel as well and videos about the process of getting my car.
For a first car I’d definitely always go old. I could reel off lots of reasons why but one Ive always told my friends when they’ve been in this situation is if you buy an old cheap car and then a few years later upgrade to a new car that upgrade will feel amazing and you’ll appreciate the change, but if you start off with a new car any future upgrade will feel no where near as rewarding or exciting. Just my opinion though.
I had a brand new suzuki swift for my first car, and loved it. With finance and insurance it came to about £300 a month, compared to some of my mates paying £300 a month on insurance alone, it was a easy choice.
I went for a relatively cheap car, I bought a car for £4000 which was what I could afford after a six months or so of saving up. Six months and 5000 miles later, the only costs I've racked up is a major service with brake fluid and coolant change (£280) and a new DMF and clutch assembly (£1000). The flywheel and clutch were expensive, but now I know what a failing clutch and flywheel feel/sounds like. Now I'm saving up for a Porsche Boxster 1st gen, I want something thrilling to drive, and they're relatively affordable and might even be a future classic.
Ok, this may end up being a long comment, but this is my view. If you are after a cheap, reliable, economic car, bangernomics wins hands down. Buy an old Fiesta, Polo, Astra, whatever. It’ll cost you next to nothing, will be cheap to repair and will always sell on. That being said, if you want something fast or exotic, things change dramatically. Between my wife and I we had a 12 year old 535d and a 325i hardtop convertible. We’ve recently upgraded to a new M140i and Audi TT. Yes, the monthly payments are are high, but we know what we are paying out every month and if anything goes wrong, we throw the car back at the dealer and get a courtesy car. Also, when I did the figures on how much both of the old cars cost us in purchase price, maintenance and repairs, then divided by the amount of months the cars were owned and there wasn’t a great deal of difference. Also, the ballache of trying to get to work and garages when a car had a fault was a massive pain in the cock. Like I say, if you want a cheap car to get you to work, buy an older one, if you want something quick or luxurious, you may be better leasing or getting a PCP deal. It may seem expensive at first, but it may well work out cheaper in the long run.
Personally buy a slightly older car from around early 2000’s but make sure it is bought with a warranty, has a solid MOT History and is a desirable spec so it’s easier to sell and won’t depreciate as easily.
Everyone overlooks retro/classic cars. I drive a MK2 golf as my 1st car. It costs me £600 a year to insure (im 18). They are cheap to run, look a hell of a lot better than any new car, they get more positive attention off of people of all ages and you will likely look after it and not drive like an idiot. I could go on all day lol
Gunna do a video on classics as first cars in the near future! Know a lot of people who went for them as firsts which is great, and as you say their insurance was super cheap which is such a bonus 🤙🏽
Yeah do it. No one else that I've seen has done a video about it. I looked at insuring a classic beetle or a Morris minor too and they are around £400-£450 for an 18 year old to insure! The mg b is crazy cheap too for a sports car and they can be bought for like £1.5k
I’m on car number 5 at the minute, which is a 2005 1.4 petrol Fiesta. It’s done 116k miles and has full service history and it’s never missed a beat! Before that, I’ve owned brand new cars which never went wrong too, though as you say they were ridiculously expensive, and can’t really be justified when trying to save for a house! Worst car I’ve owned? E46 320d, 160k miles and I spent £7k on repairs in 6 months, tried to sell it and the head gasket went on a test drive. It had full service history and seemed well looked after. You’d think that between the BMW and Fiesta, the BMW would be the better car yet the little Fiesta smashes it out of the park! There’s an always an element of risk with a used car and, evidently, sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn’t!
I’ve got 1.4 Peugeot 207 s and I’m 17 I had a crash within first month of driving and I wasn’t too upset but if I had a new fiesta or something I’d be so upset
I had a pretty odd car history once I passed my test almost ten years ago. I bought a brand new 2010 Mini Hatch base model & had that for a few years, then traded that in & bought a brand new 2013 Mini Estate (Clubman) as I wanted a bigger car, I had that for a few years, that traded that in for a brand new 2016 Abarth 595 as I wanted a more hot hatch kinda car, but I only had that for a year then sold it back to the dealer & bought a second hand 2009 Abarth Punto just over a year ago & it’s the car that I’m most connected to & love the most over all three other brand new out the box cars I’ve owned so far.
That is very interesting - why do you think the Abarth Punto has given you that connection? Also a very good choice in car btw, I think it's a lot nicer than the 500 Abarths (and cool as it's rarer!)
Honestly I’m not 100% I felt that the other cars I owned were kinda sterile & lacked personality & enjoyment to me, they were more of a drive from A to B cars & while I looked after them I didn’t feel the connection, the Abarth Punto, had a hard life before I got hold of it & needed allot of work to get it up to a good standard, now I’m looking at getting a remap done as I’ve now put allot of money into aftermarket parts as I want to improve it & get it up to around the 200 horsepower mark. I feel this Punto has a playful personality & a kinda cheeky feeling to it, I can’t really explain why I feel like it has, it just has a feeling that my other three cars didn’t have, they felt clinical & this one I really enjoy grabbing the keys & going out to see it & going for a drive wherever.
Good thing with old cars is that half the time a ten year old car will share the same platform as the latest showroom model, so in respects to things like suspension and handling, things don't really change much, superficial changes like slight body changes are generally the only real upgrade from the last model. I'll probably never buy a new car because of that initial depreciation, I always lookout for good deals bro 👍 always got my peepers scanning for cars 😄
Yeah that's very true, platforms last such a long time in the car world now, if you're happy to change the radio you've practically got an up-to-date car!
Personally I went for a 3 year old Skoda fabia (16 plate) for my first car... I refuse to pay more than a car is worth to insure it and I was going for job interviews so wanted something to look more professional pulling up than a cheap car that's falling apart I was quite happy actually on £1,600 to insure without a black box on quite a busy high risk road in a port town
I've personally gone with a 2014 seat Ibiza as my first car. Buying a bran new car would seem silly but 2-5k is a good amount to spend on a new car. Unless you want to mod it then the old car is best
My first car was a 4-year-old Corsa 1.2. Was a very high spec and felt decent but the head got warped on it after I'd only had it 8 months or so at 28k miles so I've always had old, cheap cars since then
Oh and Vauxhalls depreciate like mad - I bought it for £5,800 which was most of my life savings in 2016 and sold it for £3,200 in 2017 (granted I did just sell it to a dealer so lost more money than if I sold it privately but was desperate to get rid of it and a dealer could only sell it for £3,800 or so anyway). I'd definitely advise a cheap car as your first, especially if you're still a student and don't have a real income where you can afford to lose your life savings like I did.
Got my first car which was a 2008 mk6 fiesta zetec for £200 (£2000 p/y) that blew up 2 month later so I bought a 2014 fiesta zetec s (£1700 p/y) which had cheaper insurance but cost more (no black box on either )
I started off with a 2001 Polo, then got a 2004 Polo last year. I've now part exchanged that for a 2016 Polo BlueGT. I think, in my case at least, a cheaper car first was better because I've now got more experience and more NCD under my belt so a newer more powerful car is more affordable.
First car was an 01 Megane Dci, it was terrible for performance/drive/reliability but taught a lot about basic procedure (changing tyres, brakes, headlights etc) that saved money, time and headaches. Only had one car newer than a 01/Y yeg (a '13 Fiesta ST) and they are generally pretty solid. I think you missed the cost of maintenance and general wear/tear on parts. Older cars are more susceptible to general part failure from wear and tear, MOTs are a bit more stressful with things that are hard to spot like under body rust for the less mechanically minded. I could lease a new Leon Cupra or for half as much over 2 years get an EP3/FN2 Type R with similar performance and do what I want with it.
Yeah fair enough! Think I mentioned maintenance etc later in the video, I think the key thing is whether those potential costs/hassles of ownership make you want to spend more up front for potentially less annually - if you take money alone then it'll very likely still be cheaper to go for the old car and maintain it just because of how big that initial investment often is when buying new
Because of depreciation it’s not worth getting a new first car especially if there’s a risk of curbing the rims and denting it as a new driver..also I found early 2000 cars are more reliable (if looked after well) than new techy cars where when any sensor goes your screwed and ain’t moving no where
i think buying a cheaper old car as a first car is the better and more sensible option but what i cant really get my head around is is it better to get a smaller car ie a vw golf or polo (2000-2010 ) or a saloon car or a longer based car such as a mercedes c class w204 or a bmw 3 series.it may sound ridiculous as it just makes sense that the smaller car will serve you better and easier as it’ll be easier to park, maintain out on the roads etc but a saloon car has always been my dream car to own as silly and immature as it sounds.
I couldn't be bothered with the Skoda, just used detergent on the interior & left it in the driveway with all doors and the boot open for like a whole day and that seemed to sort the dog smell out!
I’m going to be driving soon and I’m wondering whether you think I should get a really cheap car with cheap insurance for my first year and then upgrade in the second year or whether I should get the best I can for the budget and keep it for a few years. Any feedback would be great 👍 great video been waiting since 5:30!
Get yourself a little 206 1.4 diesel 04 reg, tax is £30 great fuel economy and importantly for those like yourself who are going to buy their first car, cheap to insure... This is always the biggest killer. I've had enough cars and spent more a lot of money.. Just go cheap, keep your outgoings as low as possible. Trust me. Also DON'T get anything PCP, you might as well give your money to a homeless person or throw it down the drain.
@@jasperkemp6876 just remember it's just an object and to live within your means. Don't get me wrong we all love to have a nice car but when you slap the monetary equation into the mix its not worth it
I'm really struggling with this at the moment. i'm a older new driver. On one hand I want a car that reflects my financial status, yet is also easy with the fuel economy and maintenance. On the other hand a cheap first car would be more forgiving as an inexperienced driver, with accidents and such, and the insurance would be cheap, if not just 3rd party and not comprehensive.
I'm finding the car Search quite challenging for me tbf 😂😂😂 I'm 19 and am looking for a first car. I live in a small countryside town, but work in a small cathedral city. And, quite often on weekends I need to get to places that are kind of the middle of nowhere. With the odd occasional trip to my other half (120 mile round trip as he is at Uni). I'm also a musician in a band. It's hard to find something that could fit the criteria of being a car that is quite comfortable on long journeys, suitable for harsh country roads and the city, and can fit upto 3 guitars and two amps in without too much effort. Oh, and is easier to drive when it comes to winter conditions.... Basically, a Fabia estate would be perfect 😂😂😂😂
Perhaps a diesel fabia would be a better option if you're worried about winter driving, the extra torque would be superior to a petrol equivalent. I'm also 19 and I've got my heart set on a diesel VRS 😍
🤦🏾♂️ you want a runner like a fiesta which is reliable cheap to repair. your first car you gonna make mistakes so no point buying brand new a 10 year old car with full service history good to go
Great video, I'm learning to drive at the moment and don't plan on getting a car until next year but I'm thinking about buying a classic hatchback (1970's-90's) as my first car
Buying a new car is not necessarily better for the environment. You have to factor in the co2 produced in the manufacturing process. An older car has already been made, where as if you have a new car, there is all that extra pollution during the building of it. Although I would imagine that the building process is a lot cleaner now then in the past.
It's not just for first cars...if you can afford to buy a new car then you can afford a much nicer car that's a few years old. Insurance may be more but then you'll have spent less on buying the car. I could have bought a brand new, mid spec Fiesta ST which is a great car. Instead, I spent the same money on a car with moisturing aircon, automatic high beam (LED lights of course), electric blinds, 18-way seat adjustment and way too much other stuff which I use a surprising amount of. It's also as fast as a 2020 Audi S6 but beats the Fiesta on real-world economy. Struggling to see why buying a new car is a good idea... Side note: when being tailgated, I can't imagine anything more satisfying than raising the rear blind. No need to drop them or move over, it just says "I no longer wish to look at you, peasant."
2nd comment but worth noting that the NCAP has changed a LOT recently. They re-tested a Fiat Panda which scored 4 stars in 2011...it now scores 0 stars. That's largely because newer cars are much better at not being in accidents. I know this video focuses on CHEAP first cars but I think a mid point is really the best option. Buy a 4 year old car that's done it's depreciating and breaking, you get a potentially current model car that can be
Yeah it's very true, applies across the board (and is basically the foundation of my channel haha) - the blind raising point being particularly prevalent. And yeah it's very hard to make a full comparison on safety given the different ways of testing & measures, but having been in a crash in an older car, it did make me feel quite comfortable getting the Polo in how well the Skoda held up!

@@CarsWithJB Cars are insanely safe now, I saw a crash test of my old Pug 306 which was rated 3 stars in 1997. Hitting a brick wall at 60mph, you'd apparently be unlucky to get injured by anything other than bricks going through the windscreen. I never tested that myself of course...
Just buy a used reliable and cheap to maintain first car. Then drive through Europe and do some sightseeing, campings in France are very affordable and fun!. I drove the Gotthardpass in a ZX, it is the drive I remember not the ZX so much.. Spend your money on exploring the world and meet people from different countries.
I will never buy a new car, there's too many old cars I want to own, next one on the list Toyota mr2 W20 GT so much fun for 3000£ and now compare it to another boring corsa 1.2 that you saw today 20 times. How many mr2s did you see this year? 3? This is a no brainer for me. Even if I can afford a car for 20k£ I would just invest 1k for suspension rebuild and some other stuff so the car will feel like new. Even those cheap 2din android 7" radios from china that I recently put into my mx5, even that makes a big difference in a new car you have to pay 1k extra so it's added to the version you wanna buy and it gives you so much less than an aftermarket one
@@CarsWithJB I know! It sounds quite nice for 4 cylinders but my exhaust is blown (ordered a new one) and it's quite annoying now, for the first week it was nice but it's not how it supposed to be so that's my next upgrade, I'm quite stoked to hear how cobalt exhaust sounds on my mx5 😀
Any advice for a first car for me? i have a budget of around £1000 and have been passed for 3 months now and still haven’t got a car, i don’t know what to buy or how to find a good deal. I’ve been looking into a VW Polo, Old style ford fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa
The Polo is of course where I'm biased towards, but I would suggest start with insurance quotes and work it out from there - I made a video on cheap first cars for £1000 recently so check that out with all the quotes etc and see what you like!
A Vivienne Westwood Time Machine - nothing super special, bought it a few years ago and it does the job - I'd love to upgrade but rn all my money is either going on cars or being saved for a house!
Ultimately the decision comes down to the buyers financial background. Ideally we would all be buying new cars. But we don't all have the means in order to do that. Older cars are more accessible for most people and generally speaking should be reliable enough if they have been maintained properly. I like the video and the idea of the video. A lot of research involved. Out of interest and I have some plans for some similar videos of yours myself, with most likely a different intended audience. What editing software are you using and what mic are you using?
Yeah of course - or at least with more wealth comes more choice, so you could go new, or you could go used! My on-camera mic is the Rode VideoMic, for commentary I use the Blue Yeti (basic and easy), and for editing I use Vegas Pro!
I still have my first car (Rover 75) and I want to lease/pcp my next one, because the thing with older cars is that by general rule, they are either boring, unreliable, or uncomfortable. At least one of those. My Rover has had issues but to no fault of it's own, it's had structural rust and a shift cable recently snapped but the car has done past 200k miles in salt, snow and dirt, so can't blame Rover for that, can I? Anyway... There's lots of older cars that are fun and interesting, but I wouldn't wanna drive a long trip in one and there's lots of older cars that are comfortable on those longer trips, but then they're probably premium and probably german, in which case it's financial instability: the movie, there's lots of reliable older cars but they're just boring and uninteresting. Having recently driven brand new cars, the difference is massive. I'm the kind of car guy who's interested in 'regular' cars, so I get excited about new Škodas and stuff like that. I think new cars are a lot more interesting than the cars of my childhood (the early-mid 00's) and also just having good a/c, better ergonomics, more practicality, I could go on. Thing is, I *_LOVE_* my Rover 75 when it's about +10, cloudy, dry and I'm driving on a long, curvy road. However I hate it on grocery trips, petrol stops, winter mornings, summer days. Newer cars just do the 'every day' better, and while I would love to buy another lesser mileage 75 for my next car or a Subaru SVX or an early Audi A3 for joy rides on the empty roads at night, I know that I wouldn't love every day with it. Thanks for coming to my TED talk
@@big5th159 I should probably clarify that I just used pcp because I assumed it's the most relevant term to brits, since I think that's mostly the audience of JB's videos, in reality every dealership and car brand has their own leasing terms here in Finland that it's useless to use one term to describe all of it.
@@CarsWithJB The yearly tax is 0-150€ for regular new cars but purchase tax can be high when engine displacement comes along, although typically only 5-10% of total purchase. Not sure how it could especially affect the financing though.
@@kyle_vr They have just got a reliability issue for all of them to be honest. If its outside the warranty period, be prepared for a lot of maintenance Bills. Dont get me wrong, I love Minis. I have a 2002 Mini which is my fourth, however, compared to other cars i have owned, it needs more tlc.
How does a 1st licence holder 20 year old afford a brand new car like an audi I see a lot of 18 year olds with. Must be spoiled rotten with parents with money bags and don't understand what its like to have to save their money themselves!!! Keep in mind a lot of these people are paying for college and parties, so where is that money coming from???
Where do folks find such cheap cars? I’m trying to buy my first car and I have a budget of 5-6k and I can barely find a nice looking car with not too much mileage
I guess if you have a tonn of money then why not spend it on a new car that is more likely going to last for tens of thousands of miles more. Although many do not have such money.
when I can get my first car its going to be a polo 9n because my family owns a mk5 golf that just has this lust for life, only two breakdowns in 5 years: org battey died at 12 years old and a coilpack
Really depends on what you go for - the majority of old car stories I get in the comments are pretty positive, and re the second point it depends whether you care what other people think (or need to care re for work etc)!
I'll throw something in here. I work at a breakdown company and for reliability idler cars are better new cars are worse for it. It takes alot to kill an old car.
Haha my dad says the same as a mechanic, it's always newer cars with the poor build quality 🤷🏽♂️

If it's managed 50k+ miles then anything dodgy will have already broken.
Except my 02 astra cuz that breaks down alot xD

Cars With JB insurance is the biggest scam out there but whatever we just have to live in it. my address is London too so its extra bad for me but we just got a play the game, had a 1.4 golf for a year but just sold it and got an e92. ur videos wouldve blessed me differently if i had come across them before i insured my first car but whatever we live and we learn ahah
i guess Im randomly asking but does someone know a trick to get back into an instagram account?
I was stupid forgot the password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
@Bishop Cullen instablaster ;)
My first car is the family Rover 800 si auto. It sounds like a tractor, the central locking is busted, the back door is sticky, there's rust, the windows get stuck and it struggles to get to 4th gear. But as much as i complain about it I wouldn't have had any other 1st car. I've never had an accident except with a wall (cracked front bumper) and a tree branch ( through my mirror) both getting into the same car park within my first 2 months on the road and I'm so glad it wasn't a new car.
crazy how 30 mins ago i was looking at what first car to buy and this was just posted! quality timing and quality content!
Haha nice one, I hope the video was useful!
In my country, we usually have shitboxes that have a tuned muffler.
Haha same as here then I guess 🤷🏽♂️
Haha wow that's an amazing car history for 15 months! I hope you get to achieve one/some of those cars by the time you're 21 🤙🏽
Haider Sohail how you enjoying the limited edition? I’ve got a remapped 67 plate one and I’m loving it
@@weeevilswine To be honest it's a great and solid car.
Haider Sohail where did you find the corsa, as I’m looking for bargains but can’t find any good ones anywhere
For real, the majority of your learning comes after the test (at least in my case haha)
Cars With JB 100% I think the test should be so much more thorough but there’s only so much you can learn in an hour
@ 4:00 I looked at the MX-5 emissions and immediately heard Greta. "How dare you!" 😂
Haha she would not be best pleased 🤷🏽♂️
Still on my first car. 2003 Fiat Punto, had it six years and it's been solid. It's bare bones basic, doesn't even had a rev counter, but it has character 🚗💨
Very strong, 6 years is amazing!
I'm 16 and just bought my first car last week. A 1994 Ford Escort LX Hatchback for $900. It's in great shape.
congrats!!!! i just got myself a 2020 nissan versa sv. i'm a toyota person but i think I dropped the gun too fast and this is what i ended up leaving the lot with, lol i'm grateful though, its the perfect car for me. all glory to god!
Completely agree, particularly on the rewarding/exciting point!
We also know that new drivers are the most likely to crash, and it is cheaper to mend/total an old car than a new one.
I had a brand new suzuki swift for my first car, and loved it. With finance and insurance it came to about £300 a month, compared to some of my mates paying £300 a month on insurance alone, it was a easy choice.
Very nice - that is solid for sure!
How old were you?
I went for a relatively cheap car, I bought a car for £4000 which was what I could afford after a six months or so of saving up. Six months and 5000 miles later, the only costs I've racked up is a major service with brake fluid and coolant change (£280) and a new DMF and clutch assembly (£1000). The flywheel and clutch were expensive, but now I know what a failing clutch and flywheel feel/sounds like. Now I'm saving up for a Porsche Boxster 1st gen, I want something thrilling to drive, and they're relatively affordable and might even be a future classic.
Good to hear - good luck with the saving/search for the Boxster!
Thanks for the story re yourself & your wife - definitely agree it's very much a situational issue
Personally buy a slightly older car from around early 2000’s but make sure it is bought with a warranty, has a solid MOT History and is a desirable spec so it’s easier to sell and won’t depreciate as easily.
Yeah that's fair enough - early 2000s is the sweet spot for me too, and the depreciation has generally hit rock bottom in many cases
Thom Seager mk2 1st car gang 🤙🏼
Nice one! Can't think of a better 1st car. Love it to bits
Btw im loving the videos and I love the mx5. I would really like an NA mx5 at some point in the near future
£7k on repairs is crazy! Sorry to hear that... particularly the head gasket story, not enjoyable at all.
You put so much effort into videos, deserve more subs👏
Haha appreciate it man, hopefully in time!
I’ve got 1.4 Peugeot 207 s and I’m 17 I had a crash within first month of driving and I wasn’t too upset but if I had a new fiesta or something I’d be so upset
Yeah exactly that - would definitely suck!
That's strong - rate that! hope it treats you well
My first car was a 4-year-old Corsa 1.2.
Sorry to hear that, really sucks when things go wrong! And agree - I'd much rather my £400 car went wrong than a £5,600 car 😢
Got my first car which was a 2008 mk6 fiesta zetec for £200 (£2000 p/y) that blew up 2 month later so I bought a 2014 fiesta zetec s (£1700 p/y) which had cheaper insurance but cost more (no black box on either )
Sorry to hear that your first car blew up! Hope the newer one treats you well 🤙🏽
@@CarsWithJB Definitely alot better especially to modify looking at getting a stage 1 remap on it in the next month or two 😁
Great video, with facts and figures and your view.. I agree older car better option..
Yeah that's very fair, you've done a proper Polo right of passage too haha!
@@CarsWithJB Indeed - loving the extra power!
Think I mentioned maintenance etc later in the video, I think the key thing is whether those potential costs/hassles of ownership make you want to spend more up front for potentially less annually - if you take money alone then it'll very likely still be cheaper to go for the old car and maintain it just because of how big that initial investment often is when buying new
£3,689 to insure a MK2 MX5? Where did you get that quote from? Even when I was 18 my insurance on my MK1 import was £2,200 lol
Im guessing you dont live in east london
Haha that's an amazing quote - this was on an NB to be fair, and it was just the comparison price I got with my standard 'cheap' quote!
I’m having my Nan’s 2002 Suzuki Wagon R. had it since brand new 55,000 miles and a full service history, been looked after
flexxxx
George Wigley not really a flex
That's really decent, done well!
For a first car, if it moves and has an MOT thats all you need :)
Haha love it, literally that!
Really want to cop a MK2 MR2 93-97 but worried about keeping it up and running for another 10years with out problems just by doing regular servicing.
If you do your research and keep a rainy day fund it could be worth it!
I have a 2011 fiat punto evo as my first, as I think it's a nice middle ground from the two sides
Yeah that's a nice first car for sure, well equipped too!
@@CarsWithJB Ye I was surprised with the amount of equipment on it, rivales some VW of today in terms of standard equipment 😂
I have a 66 plate swift sport at 17 but if was to go back I would have bought a 2012/13 model as they are identical except the infotainment system
That's interesting to hear actually - nice car either way!
Because of depreciation it’s not worth getting a new first car especially if there’s a risk of curbing the rims and denting it as a new driver..also I found early 2000 cars are more reliable (if looked after well) than new techy cars where when any sensor goes your screwed and ain’t moving no where
Yeah agreed on both counts! Sometimes simplicity is key & older cars provide that
i think buying a cheaper old car as a first car is the better and more sensible option but what i cant really get my head around is is it better to get a smaller car ie a vw golf or polo (2000-2010 ) or a saloon car or a longer based car such as a mercedes c class w204 or a bmw 3 series.it may sound ridiculous as it just makes sense that the smaller car will serve you better and easier as it’ll be easier to park, maintain out on the roads etc but a saloon car has always been my dream car to own as silly and immature as it sounds.
Depends what you want from the car! I loved having an estate as my first car, it was so useful 🤙🏽
Cars With JB did you have trouble with parking and stuff like that??
Wow man you put alot of work researching all this this 👏
Haha it's all good I enjoy the research!
I think having a cheap first car is the way to go. You have plenty of time to experience better cars down the track
completely agree!
Yes my man JB putting in work keep it up live your vids
Haha appreciate it my dude!
Yes 🔥🔥🔥🔥 been waiting for this
IndianJudgie same
It was always coming 🤙🏽🤙🏽
you can use an ozone cleaner to get rid of most smells
I couldn't be bothered with the Skoda, just used detergent on the interior & left it in the driveway with all doors and the boot open for like a whole day and that seemed to sort the dog smell out!
I’m going to be driving soon and I’m wondering whether you think I should get a really cheap car with cheap insurance for my first year and then upgrade in the second year or whether I should get the best I can for the budget and keep it for a few years. Any feedback would be great 👍 great video been waiting since 5:30!
That's exactly what I have done, got a £1000 polo for 2 years and just bought myself a upgrade, also insurance will is cheap after 2 yrs ncb
Relm_Media cheers for the recommendation, will definitely take this into consideration thanks
@@jasperkemp6876 just remember it's just an object and to live within your means. Don't get me wrong we all love to have a nice car but when you slap the monetary equation into the mix its not worth it
But you may have to pay ULEZ.
Great video as per usual man !
Thanks as always!
I’m turning 17 in 3 months and I’m looking at a 63 plate A180 with 90,564 miles
That would be very nice!
I'm in the same boat, but my problem is safety, I want a safe car, with automatic emergency braking
Iv got a 2008 207 peugeot i love it and its realy fun its a 1.4hdi diesel
Nice - very decent!
Would a honda ej9 1.4 be a good first car? Or even a ef 1.3 hatch?
Depends on insurance, but the 1.3 would likely be the better bet on that front!
I'm finding the car Search quite challenging for me tbf 😂😂😂
I'm 19 and am looking for a first car.
Haha mate I'm surprised you haven't gone for the Fabia Estate already... 🤷🏽♂️😂 fits the bill perfectly!
Perhaps a diesel fabia would be a better option if you're worried about winter driving, the extra torque would be superior to a petrol equivalent. I'm also 19 and I've got my heart set on a diesel VRS 😍
🤦🏾♂️ you want a runner like a fiesta which is reliable cheap to repair. your first car you gonna make mistakes so no point buying brand new a 10 year old car with full service history good to go
Yep exactly that!
Great vid i wish you showed the cars but still top notch
Yeah that's fair enough, me being lazy!
Great video, I'm learning to drive at the moment and don't plan on getting a car until next year but I'm thinking about buying a classic hatchback (1970's-90's) as my first car
Classics are good too to get that classic insurance!
@@CarsWithJB yeah I've heard classic car insurance is relatively cheap that's a huge plus point lol
Great video mate ! 👍
Cheers! 🤙🏽
Cheers! 🤙🏽
Buying a new car is not necessarily better for the environment. You have to factor in the co2 produced in the manufacturing process. An older car has already been made, where as if you have a new car, there is all that extra pollution during the building of it. Although I would imagine that the building process is a lot cleaner now then in the past.
Yeah very true - it's about working out what your total carbon impact will be!
I'm going for a something like a fiesta mk6 for my first 🚗
Go for it - I mention one in my vid that drops this evening actually!

Exactly what I did haha! My Europe trip was the best holiday of my life so far 👏🏽
Yeah that's fair enough! And to be perfectly honest, when I drive my MX5 I never have the radio on as I just want to listen to it 🤤
@@CarsWithJB I know!
I’ll check out that video, i got a quote of £940 for a 1.2 car but i would pay monthly making it £1040 so technically have a budget of £2,000
I’m 17 and just passed , getting my seat Ibiza 2010 tomorrow
Hope the purchase went well!
Hey, how do you like your car man?
What watch are you wearing? 🤔⌚👀
A Vivienne Westwood Time Machine - nothing super special, bought it a few years ago and it does the job - I'd love to upgrade but rn all my money is either going on cars or being saved for a house!
Im getting a 2009 1.4 kia cee'd ... the reasonably piced topgear car!!
Haha huge respect!
lets just say if someone wanted a 2005 aston martin db9 for 30k at 18, how hard would it be for them to insure?
ShroomWalrus pcp isn’t the way to go bro they’ll nearly always catch you with a hefty sum
@@big5th159 I should probably clarify that I just used pcp because I assumed it's the most relevant term to brits, since I think that's mostly the audience of JB's videos, in reality every dealership and car brand has their own leasing terms here in Finland that it's useless to use one term to describe all of it.
Thanks for the detail! In Finland I swear you have really horrendous car tax too - does that affect financing options?
@@CarsWithJB The yearly tax is 0-150€ for regular new cars but purchase tax can be high when engine displacement comes along, although typically only 5-10% of total purchase. Not sure how it could especially affect the financing though.
Thoughts on a R56 mini cooper d?
A really cool car, particularly if it's your first, but I'm the wrong person to speak about them as I'm not a maaaajor fan of minis!
Very unreliable. I would stay clear
@@debbiepeter112 what about the petrol?
@@kyle_vr They have just got a reliability issue for all of them to be honest. If its outside the warranty period, be prepared for a lot of maintenance Bills. Dont get me wrong, I love Minis. I have a 2002 Mini which is my fourth, however, compared to other cars i have owned, it needs more tlc.
Is it cheap to insure a 2010 renault megane 1.5 dCi 110 Dynamique TomTom 3dr as a first car
Good video 🔥
Cheers boss!
Where do folks find such cheap cars?
I’m trying to buy my first car and I have a budget of 5-6k and I can barely find a nice looking car with not too much mileage
You are not quite correct JB. When you buy a new car and drive it out of the showroom, you immediately lose the VAT and vehicle excise duty
Yes well spotted! (Expect spam response to your comments as I’m slowly making my way through)
One other thing. A 17 year old will not be able to gain finance as it is illegal for lenders to loan to under 18s
Good point - I keep forgetting I got my first car at 18 so finance was an option I considered!
I live in hull and all i see people driving is citroen c1s and corsas
Ayyy 6pm squad
My G 🤙🏽 appreciate it
I guess if you have a tonn of money then why not spend it on a new car that is more likely going to last for tens of thousands of miles more. Although many do not have such money.
Financial situation is definitely very important!

Edit : well this doesn't work as well as I intended but ok
Haha the point was still made!
In 16 and 17 I march I wanna buy a Hella cheap car any ideas
check out my video on sub-£1k cars, probably a good place to start!
when I can get my first car its going to be a polo 9n because my family owns a mk5 golf that just has this lust for life, only two breakdowns in 5 years: org battey died at 12 years old and a coilpack
Love that - coil pack barely even counts as a breakdown haha!
Cheap old car 100% fun memories and character, also it’s based on budget ofc like if it was up to me I’d of bought a mclaren 720s but ££😂
Haha agree on both points!
How old is older car?
Need more video
More on their way!
I reckon a first car should be 15-20 yr old petrol hatchback
*[Happy CarsWithJB noises]*
V spooky
For about 1500£ you can buy a decent older car with relatively low miles
Agreed - very dependent on what you want to go for!
Don't get a new car if you enjoy the thrill of driving.
Haha fair enough!
reliable cheap good runners all day
I'm with you!
Dealership vs individual
What about a old nice car
Plenty of them out there - nice is very much relative to the purchaser, like I'm obviously a fan of my 9n!
Your polo is still on the road
just buy a new one... Old ones need more work and "non car" people will think you are poor af
Really depends on what you go for - the majority of old car stories I get in the comments are pretty positive, and re the second point it depends whether you care what other people think (or need to care re for work etc)!
Cars With JB Can you mention my comment on your next video and ask people what they think about this?
Everyone just get a Toyota if you’re fancy get lexus
Lol or buy a VW & if you're fancy get an Audi? 🤷🏽♂️
Not too old but not too new.
Unless you want to go for a classic!
I dont by a car to crash it so
I'm sure most people don't, yet 20-50 million people get injured in road accidents every year!
Love from bangladesh
Thanks boss, greetings from the UK!
I wouldn't be seen dead in a new car, there shit and made to be scrapped
An old Honda Civic or Volvo V70 is the way to go
Haha fair enough - the Volvo would get me in particular
Bike insurance is cheaper
This is true - even though I like bikes I am 'Cars' With JB so not something I'd talk about haha
