She’s doing it right. She’s not a professional athlete and sports is only part of her life. She’s super fit and enjoys all aspects of her life. Not letting sports dictate and rule all other aspects of her life. Way to go! 🎉
This how I would describe as hedonism over addiction. One is the pursuit of pleasure, the other chases pleasure for ultimate happiness. Keep up the speed walking Mark...
I had a stroke a few yrs ago at the age of 45. I stared walking more and eating better. I really enjoy your videos with you and your wife, both of you give me inspiration
OMG the cutaways and edits in this one were hilarious, but really told the story pretty well actually. Well done, and good for her! Great takeaway message.
It took me an age to work out that my wife and I have very different motivations for exercise. I "enjoy" pushing myself she enjoys being out and doing it. She completed her longest run today. Guess which one of us is constantly battling to stay uninjured? Turning up is really all that matters.
The acceptance of your own motivations and actions whether they're towards your goals or against them and your preparedness to share them is what makes you such a refreshingly honest voice. It's a journey, not a destination and you share this well. Thanks Mark.
I was a very heavy chain smoker for 25 years. I stopped smoking a year ago. I recently started exercising. I plan on taking part in the Ironman in two years.
@@petewiggins it is effective, but requires a level of discipline that probably isn’t a great jumping in stage. I always encourage less red meat and cheese as a good starting point! Took me 10 years in my nutritional journey to get to vegan!
I am 31 and started running February this year. I go every day for at least a 5k run. Lost over 20kg, looking and feeling great. Just get up and get moving, every day, no excuses.
Jenna's cycling pic 😅 I completely agree with the "enjoying the process instead of focusing on the result" attitude. I'm currently on my longest running fitness journey because I made that mental switch.
Mark, Jen is such a great fitness partner for you. Her approach hits at the root of being active…..we exercise to make sure we can enjoy life better, including the activities that keep us healthy. You two are both motivators in your approaches.
That folks is the definition of "The way is the goal" for me. Perfectly executed. It's not about making progress every day, or every week. (Even if the whole fitness community on social media tell you this) It is about doing SOMETHING constistently! You may miss a workout, or a run or a meal. But then you continue to do it the day after. And it is better to do a bad workout, than NO workout. Just never stop guys. I can tell you, starting over again and again is the worst experience ever. Just keep going! Cheers!
inspired by your videos I just shot my "before" pictures. Man its bad. I'll send them together with my "after" pictures once I'm satisfied, no matter if its a year or 10 years from now. Slow progress is still better than no progress or my current pace, going backwards.
Having fitness to say yes to new opportunities or challenges is swiftly becoming my main motivation for staying fit! It can sometimes feel like a grind, or like I'm constantly getting back on the horse after set backs, but at the end of the day, it's worth it for the freedom to say "YES!"
You've truly inspired me to believe that you can bring your girlfriend into the world of fitness, doesn't have to be in the same madness as us but in their own way. This was beautiful!
Sounds like she has it all figured out. Not comparing herself to others and just enjoying the activities themselves and not only the "getting better" or "being better than others" part. While also enjoying her food.
This is bang on! Spend years lifting in the gym for really to 'get back to my best' which is a near an impossible task when you're 20 years older! Maybe get to a better than average standard and enjoy new sports
You both work out!! So well together. The very fact you both enjoy a fitness journey just goes to strengthen your relationship. Doesn't really matter which one of you is fittest right now. If i was Jen i would be looking for a finish podium with a lake in the back ground. Great content keep going 😊
Fun is and will be the key to keeping it going! A lesson I learned the hard way, and with a massive crash and struggles for a couple of years, now back in shape and focused on FUN, has been the key to success.
Top marks for a most excellent, humorous and oddly motivating vid :D As someone who has fallen into the clinging mire of getting so out of shape that making any progress seems impossible, this was just the sort of funny nudge I needed to gather some resolve to at least *try*
I wouldn't so much take a leaf out of her book, as several chapters. Trust me when I say; after 50 you walk a knife-edge between progress and injury (or, at least, I do). Sometimes slow'n'steady really does win the race. Good luck with that crushing it thing...
To reach peaks, training has to sail close to the edge of injury, so if chasing medals when younger the risk is justified. But for us older folk, we recover slower and decline quicker, so hard to recoupe the losses. Better to stay on the safe side of the risk line. That said, it is still possible to stay well above average at athletic sport across all age groups in to your 60's. Well below Olympic gold, but above 50% of everyone out there!
Great one Mark. Ive just got my partner in to my fitness way of life (Her even younger..... "is that your grandaughter...!) She is crushing the runs but wants to squat and deadlift now. A couple that train happily together and apart is the way forward. Take care of those injuries, they take even longer to get over in your 60's !!!
Started kickboxing in March, just before my 48th birthday, just to see what it was like and to give me a different training challenge. Enjoying it so much got my yellow belt last week, and now starting to adapt my other training to better suit the literal and metaphorical kicking I get on a Monday evening. Also, signed up for a Tough Mudder in September with a mate because it looks absolutely hideous, and thus it'll be a laugh. No specific goals in mind for either of them - just keep going until the fun stops, then move onto something else.
one could say the 'fun-approach' is more optimal because it takes feeling into account whereas the 'maximise fitness by sticking to a plan and follow it no matter what because I think for some reason this is the best plan there ever was-approach' avoids to look at feeling entirely. there is a message in there somewhere. good vid mark 🙌
It's basically that discipline can only motivate you so far and that obsession with it leads to harm. Having fun, being malleable, and treating it as something you enjoy means you'll stick with it consistently and seek out new ways to have fun
"She ignored much of my useful guidance". I had to laugh. This is a universal situation. Anyway, Jen seems to have hit on a formula for success. Maybe she learned something from Nixon - I loved that video.
I can't help thinking, and not intending to minimise Jenna's hard work, progress and mindset in any way, that she was and still is extremely fortunate to have someone so close to be so invested in her. This is not a process for the faint-hearted. Having support, any support, is arguably the most valuable aspect. Needless to say, my path is extremely challenging. Not because I don't have the time or means, but because I have nobody who really gives a shit. Why I should depends on my day and mindset, more often than I care to admit.
It boils down to different personality types. I’m in the mark camp, all or nothing. The Jenna’s of this world are consistent and can maintain it. It also helped that she didn’t have any weight to lose when she started her fitness journey - another sign of the difference in personalities as I’m always launching into my new regime with weight to lose
Inspired in part due to your videos. I‘m 3.5/6 months into a marathon training plan and just ran 14 miles this morning, non-stop! After I do this marathon I plan to start going to the gym and get in shape that way
As always, very entertaining. I’m 66yo, trail run 4mi/day and do CrossFit 3d/wek. In 1990 I was T boned and fractured a bunch of spinal processes, and ended up with some scar tissue. At CrossFit I decided to push my squats … did 80 weighted and really got “down” … brill8ant idea … now I have sciatica originating from the scar tissue and have been off on the injury list for a week .. back again now .. but no more “low” squats … well. No more until I forget the pain and try again. To emphasize your po);t, I did ge5 an MRI which I hope will help me exercise like crazy and not inflame “what ever the problem is” (emailed doc and had it the next day … love the NHs but glad I’m not old and in England).
Its great that you have inspired your daughter* to follow in your footsteps, and shes doing it in her own way - which maybe you can learn from like she did from you! *I wasnt going to type this until your closong comment! 😂

Another fun video, one of the only good things about slipping is that it is fun to see the numbers improve again. What usually happens in my mid 50's is that i will return to a healthy baseline, start to push myself a little harder and then something happens. Great video Mark. I went and did my first Open Water swim in a years and have not swam in a pool other than to get to the other side to get a drink from the bar. It was great being back in the water and it felt remarkably OK, found I still had some technique but I was so slow now! When I got home my wife asked me if I enjoyed it, I replied, yes I did and that I am now scheduling when I can back in the pool to get better! She just rolled her eyes.
I'm so similar to you in so many ways Mark.. on or off / all in or nothing at all (and the ability to binge and eat about 6k calories a day for months when I'm 'off!) and I'm really starting to learn that the only way I'll ever stop this vicious cycle being more like the Jens of the world. Really enjoyed the video and certainly food for thought for those of us who have (more than once) not turned up to a race or event as we weren't in peak fitness!
I hope you make a full recovery and find your sporting mojo again. You can enjoy the fact you've converted Jen to enjoying regular exercise and shaping others on this platform.

Thanks for the video Mark. The fact you're not Mr Infallible UA-cam is reason #1 why I can relate to what you're doing. PS it can be super tricky *mentally* when the student starts doing stuff better than the master. Works out okay though.
It’s a particularly exquisite pain/joy when the student beats the master. My 15 dancer daughter who, “hates running,” can almost beat me in an all out sprint. At 48, I’ve been running middle distance for decades so the pride/bruised ego is confusing.
Having fun is probably the most important part of it bc if you get too hyper focused on geinding for a super specific detail it really makes you miserable. I started mixing body building and strong man workouts plus random judo and karate drills with the emphasis of just have fun and enjoy it and stop worrying abt the freaking numbers
