AMERICANS, the range in miles is 235. Sorry, we forgot to include that. Also some information coming from a GV60 owner: If you have the all wheel drive version and you put the car in eco mode, the car will mostly only use the rear motor, and shut down the front motor for efficiency I drive the RWD model, and that gives me 500+km range (computer does say 600km but that’s probably unlikely). RWD model only does 0-100 in 7 ish seconds, but i found it plenty Base level GV60 in Korea is about $15k more than Ioniq 5 & EV6. I think at that price range it’s worth it for the extended Genesis warranty (not sure how it works elsewhere, but it’s longer than hyundai in korea), and the premium feel you get. I got it and I love it. Range isn’t an issue because it’s a commuter and weekend long hauls as long as I charge it before hand will get me home with plenty to spare. It’s comfy and a hoot to boost. Plenty of safety features make me extra aware of my surroundings and the price which doesn’t break the bank sold me on the test drive. I test drove everything from an ix, i4, tesla, even had a reservation for a lucid touring (test drove it and it didn’t give me a special feeling where it counts), even its twins I tested and didn’t like. This on the other did it for me and my wife. I had my sites set on the ix after cancelling the lucid but the price difference didn’t justify a commuter (38 mi round trip x4 a week). To each their own, but if you have an opportunity to test drive and looking to dab into EVs and don’t want a Tesla and want something upscale, this is a good way to start.

It's not that expensive here in the US. I just got my level 2 outlet installed by an electrician. All in costs $470. I didn't get a charging box or station, just an outlet that can handle level 2 charging. It doesn't look cool or anything, but it works and that's all most people need it for.
I don’t think their information on the topic of charging at home was as universal as it came across in the video. I think for most homeowners it is likely to be simpler and less expensive than they let on.
My house (also in the US) was probably a more complicated case, with a detached garage and the panel in the basement. I paid $1350 to get wiring run to the garage (about 20' away from the house) + the 14-50 outlet, but a "normal" house with an attached garage I'd expect to be much cheaper.
Its great haha! Super smart addition to an electric car in my opinion. Similar to the boost clock speed in a computer, electric cars have a certain thermal overhead in the wires where they can safely exceed their rated continuous power draw for a short time. Do it for too long and the wires in the motor windings will melt and the mosfets in the MSC will explode, but for 10 seconds its totally fine! So not only is it a clever and simple way to take advantage of that thermal overhead, but you get a feckin boost button! love it.
I simply don't get it...why does it seem like almost everyone loves kia/hyundai design? I personally don't care for their looks, they are childishly overstyled imo (not in a good way like a supercar, but it a bad way like a fwd crossover) and aren't cars that anyone will care for 20 years later....they're just transportation, overpriced at this point too. That kia pinch grill thing looks terrible imo, but I think most people are impressed by kia and hyundai looks because they aren't car people...so that's what looks good to them. As an enthusiast who does everything themselves, I'm not gonna be owning a korean car anytime soon...they gotta come up with something really good and undercut the competitor price by a large margin for me to consider one...but they're just as expensive as anything else...yuck! Ultimately they're not built with Japanese quality or with Tesla technology/engineering.
@@VNCTHE1 The Ioniq 5 is actually a nice looking car. Something about that subtle DeLorean style makes it appealing to even the biggest of diehard motorheads
Genesis did this car right, they didn't ruin the interior/exterior design by making it try to stand out from a gas car, and the interior doesn't scream cost cutting like the Ikea desk interior of a Tesla. It has more than enough speed for most people, and it has buttons for climate control, mirrors, heated/cooled seats, gear selection, vents you can aim without a screen, and can't forget about a glovebox handle. Desperately need more EVs to follow this trend
Correct. I refuse to buy a car that won't even let you adjust anything manually. I hope that the digital era is over soon and analog switches and levers come back into style. There was a time in the 1950's when every car started using push buttons for everything. Then they stopped doing that in the 1960's. And then again in the 1980's every single far started having digital things and no more analog parts, but then in the 1990's they stopped using digital screens and went back to analog. There isn't a valid reason that Tesla doesn't use a steering wheel or adjustable vents or a gauge cluster with a dedicated speedometer. The overly synthetic computerized experience isn't what people need.
I generally like Genesis (the GV80 and GV70 are gorgeous) but I hate the way this looks in front/front three quarters. It looks like an econohatch that’s been “blinged” or something. The EV6 looks better.
13:47 I absolutely love the idea of the glove compartment being a drawer that was so cool I also like that centerpiece display panel it doesn't look like a big tablet
@@A6Legit the woke brigade will be sharpening their keyboards as we speak, ready to post a barrage of insults accusing Throttle House of being racists.
In Columbus, OH got outlet and charger net of city credits for $550 with $0.04 per kWh overnight charging rate. I have an ev6 and lovin it. I am a car enthusiast but with normal daily commute (12,000 miles) an EV with home charging is perfect. For road trips, still a bit of planning needed but in couple years that will change. EVs are so smooth and honest.
It's really only a small amount of adaptation to fit it into your current lifestyle. And if a long trip, more than a day trip, won't work with your EV, then rent a gas car. You still emit much CO2. Not bad. My '17 Leaf is much the same way, and the wife has our remaining gasser for long trips and bulky items.
Installation for my level 2 EVSE was ~$700. I did not need any panel upgrades. It could have been a little cheaper if I put it on the side of my garage closer to the panel. A decent EVSE is $600-1000. So all in, about $1,300 to $1,700 all in. At $2/L gas, it seems to pay for itself pretty quickly compared to driving an ICE car.
Talking USD here, but you can get a great EVSE (Emporia) for under $500. I had 50 ft of conduit from a 50a breaker installed to an external NEMA 14-50 for about $1000. installation at $3-$6k CAD is an insane number that doesn’t seem right.
Model 3 owner in the USA here. My install had to dig 16 feet of conduit to my detached garage, plus I got the Tesla charger. I spent $1000. But then got a tax rebate for $350 back. So pretty affordable in my book. 3-6k seems insanely high.
Thanks gentlemen for taking the time to review and give your honest opinions, greatly appreciated, thanks to the Camera man for sticking it out in all those back seat reviews!
I have met several Ionic 5/EV6 owners when charging. They spoke enthusiastically about their cars and how easy it was to make long trips in them. In much of the US EA charging coverage is pretty good and getting better.
Frustrate America chargers are notoriously unreliable. Failure rates exceed 50%. And they are not prepared to keep them maintainaned. Please write your local and federal government officials and ask them not to subsidize more chargers with irresponsible companies that have very frustrating user experiences. Telling them they have problems with their chargers doesn't help with Electrify America (frustrate and stifle America's electric growth, that's what is happening) Please write your officials. Electrify America is willfully negligent on maintenance and customer service. No more funding for incompetent charging companies...only those that verifiably demonstrate high reliability
@@stephenclarke5739 Unfortunately it very much depends on where you live. The early chargers rolled out by EA were made by ABB from industrial power supplies designed to power massive robots in factories. They were not designed to sit in Texas parking lots in the summer heat and be operated by consumers. EA and ABB can be forgiven for this. EA was under court order to build out a charging network as part of the dieselgate scandal, but there was no supplier at the time able to produce large numbers of purpose-built EV chargers and ABB had the ability to cobble something together for them when nobody else could. EA made the EV revolution possible for cars other than Tesla in the US. Today we are stuck with these older systems in many cities while more recently installed systems are more reliable. EA recently raised half a billion dollars (not from the government) to expand its network and replace older systems. This process is ongoing today. I travel by EV regularly and have never been stranded. Planning my trips and looking ahead on the EA app to ensure chargers are working helps, but even when at a charger that is giving me trouble I have never not been able to charge. Calling the EA help line and being polite has always gotten me on my way. Often just having a charger rebooted solves the problem. The older chargers suffer from the heat in hot climates and may be slower than advertised. Older interface units, the thing you plug in to, sometimes have difficulty communicating to the vehicle, especially if you have a prepaid plan from your OEM. Your OEM may have a work-around. Mine does. Worth checking. This is all new. It will take time to work itself out. Planning and constructive communication is more helpful than demanding that the government "Do Something!"
It’s interesting to see how nice the future of EVs can be when everything works properly. Hyundai/Kia/Genesis really seem to be inching closer to Tesla’s easy livability and convenient charging network, which in my opinion is still the main trump card Tesla has over other manufacturers. Really making me want that EV6 honestly…. 😎
I’m glad they’re doing good with their EVs cause I personally HATE their ICE cars. Other than like the N and GT line stuff, every modern Hyundai and Kia I’ve driven has been awful. Hopefully their EVs change that
Awesome review. As an EV driver in the UK, the points raised by Thomas are very valid. Seeing lots more EVs on the roads now than when I got mine 2,5 years ago. Waiting for a charger is becoming more common, and my car can’t charge above 50 kWh so charging isn’t as quick as in your video. EVs still worth it though. I don’t think the Genesis will be at the top of my shopping list next summer when I’m choosing my next car, but it’s great to see you guys review EVs too. Keep up the great work TH 👍
The only incorrect thing I’d mention is the charger. You can get a 240v wall outlet installed for a few hundred and that’ll fully charge your car overnight. But I agree with all the other points.
I like the interior more than the Ioniq or EV6...in particular that awesome crystal ball shifter. Buttttt...I think for the price and overall fit, personality & my regular everyday purposes...I'd go for the Ioniq.
If you have a decent car commute and don’t do a lot of road trips, I’d argue that EVs can appeal to more than just “enthusiasts”. Charging at home is very convenient, and there is a luxurious element to the low NVH of most EVs.
I'd love to have an EV for my daily commute, but until they come down in price to between 25-30k US they won't be for me. I also will need to refinance my house and pull a bit of extra money out to have a garage build so I have a place to charge the car as well.
Cost should come down soon, but right now definitely more in low level luxury price range. Lots of people put charger on outside of house or garage, and charge outside. That works great. No need to build a garage just to charge.
@@Gilamang Because EVs cost more than I want to pay for a car right now I haven't delved too deep into what it would take to have a charger installed, I assumed that it needed to be in a garage because that's where they are when I see pictures of them. TY for the info.
@@renegadezen7841 The truth is that for commuting a range of 100-150 miles is plenty. Right now, the longer-range EVs are kind of in no-man's land. They have more range than needed for commuting (thus costing more) but not quite enough to make long trips viable (especially in western North America where populations are sparse).
Ordered my ioniq5 in December but I ordered the top spec so it will take until next April to come due to the chip shortage but I currently drive a model 3 Sr+ so gas prices don't bother me. The kia is nice but the rear end is what kills it for me and why I went with the Hyundai. Was expecting more for Genesis to be honest and I'm glad I didn't wait for it before making my choice. Concerning the weight: I just saw a C&D article testing the 22 GV60 3.5T AWD, fully kitted, weighs 4584lbs, 60mph in 4.9s. I can't find specifics, but most estimated for the GV60 AWD max weight are just under 4900lbs. 60mph in less than 4s. The weight difference is closer to 300lbs, it seems, comparing like for like. Still heavy, but gas cars are also heavy.

I’ve got a Tesla Model 3P and never think about range. My fast charger was $1,500 installed and I live in Perth Australia so about as bad for charging infrastructure and long distances as it gets. It saves me A$600 a month in fuel. BUT I also have a Toyota 4WD. Which I can use for distance and rough roads. I think a lot of EV drivers do this. Two cars- one for the commute, one for the weekend. I understand that this isn’t a cheap option though and not exactly ideal for everyone.
You guys are seriously making me consider an EV for a daily car. Something I thought I’d never say. Amazing job on the overview. I love the dichotomy between you two. James is the normal everyday enthusiast who has fun on the weekends and needs a comfortable ride during the week. Thomas is the more serious car guy willing to sacrifice comfort for dynamics and engagement every day.
I think what everyone forgets is that there are so many features that are standard with Genesis vehicles and there are no packages that will hike the price up 20k more than what it is priced now. Plus Genesis only sales at MSRP and guarantees no price mark-ups unlike every other companies making EVs, so I think they have to price the vehicle as such. Also, someone has to realistically test this vehicle and see if the range is true because once Tesla is tested we all know the range is off significantly (at least 30 or more miles are over estimated by Tesla). Hyundai estimated less range on the Ioniq but when tested in real life it's was much more than predicted. And to note, unless your traveling, you won't need more than 200 Miles a day
Love the design of the Ioniq 5, love the EV6 cause of the upcoming GT and the design is good too. I was really positive but I am a bit disappointed of the Genesis. I prefer the Kia and Hyundai.
I had two EV Duty chargers installed in my garage last year. My electrician charged me $300 plus about $200 in materials. The chargers were $799 each. Quebec gave me an incentive of $600 each so $1200 and my municipality gave me $250 incentive towards the installation. My wife drove 5500km in her Jeep 4XE Highaltitude and she spent under $200 in gas as she charges daily at $0.04 per kilowatt. My Tesla 3 SR+ costs me less than $100 for 8,000km worth of driving of hydro Quebec electricity. With all the savings I bought myself a Mazda MX5 ND Club with Brembo breaks, BBS wheels and Recaro Napa leather and alcatera seats option to enjoy basic fun drop top driving.
There's so many splendid parts to this video, I won't belabor the point. Great job guys! Did anybody else think that Thomas was going to start swatting imaginary insects at the beginning? 🤣
I feel like this car will be a pretty hard sell mainly because of the electric GV70 that's gonna be released getting similar range for a similar price with better looks inside and out with better materials I'm sure. I really liked the way this video was edited with the 3 panels showing the different perspectives and everything.
I assume, given the naming structure, that this will be an "entry-level" vehicle slotting below the electric GV70 in price, size, and features. You're right, though: it'll probably cannibalize sales.
@@RogueBagel you're definitely right about that and I think you can't tell by looking at the interior. It definitely looks nice but it looks lower quality than the GV70 which in my opinion also looks better on the inside and out. The pricing that they showed in the video looked to be very close to the GV70 in price and assuming the electric GV70 will cost the same it'll definitely be a tough sell for most likely u said 😁
@@RogueBagel if the entry level is 71,000 I have a hard time picturing the GV70 and 80 being in a reasonable price range where you wouldn't just go to Tesla for model X or similar competition.
Thomas is right about the lack of charging infrastructure. And another consideration is the weakness of North American power grids. Every summer, when the ac units come on blackouts happen because the power grid is overloaded. In Texas, people were freezing when the grid shutdown.
I'm really liking this car. Even tough I'm not a fan of these crossovers, it looks sporty enough and has very nice dimensions. Especially the length of only 4.50m is ideal for those of us that need to park it in city centers. The pricetag is quite hefty though.
Nice job detailing the charging station conundrum. I think reviewers should make a bigger deal about charging stations, speeds, and costs, plus reliability of the stations and connections. Your peers at The Straight Pipes do this frequently. Until the charging network is better both in terms of availability and 100% reliability there’s going to be hesitancy for the average driver to switch to an EV. It’s getting better all the time, but Thomas is right - the infrastructure just isn’t there yet, and it’s not keeping pace with the introduction of new EVs.
I've been wanting y'all to review this car for so long. errrrmmmm describes this car perfectly! It's just kind of the disappointment in the family of Genesis'. (y'all are the best btw)
Yeah the g90 and the g80 are both beautiful but this car is more Kia and Hyundai than anything. Which I can kind of understand but I wish they kept the sophisticated look of the original lineup and just changed the engine
Fun review….I find the GV60 to be fun, fast, best fit and finish, awesome technology.. My absolute favorite car. I have the performance model. LOVE IT. And it even has a crystal ball
If you have a 120v outlet in your garage or an outdoor 120v outlet on your house you have a level 1 EV charger outlet that will give you about 80km of range in 10-12 hours of (overnight) charging. If you want a level two charger, get a quote to put a 240v plug (NEMA 6-20) in your garage, connected to your panel via a 20amp breaker, although this is really easy to DIY. A Nema 6-20 plug will accept a ~$250 3.7kwhr 240v J1772 charger and will give a typical EV abut 3.7 kw/hr or 25km of range per hour of charge or 250-300km of range each night.
American here. When I live in Ohio I hired an electrician for $200ish to install a nema 14-50 outlet to charge my model S. It is a townhouse with flush electric panel in the garage. I did the same installation myself for $60-100 when I moved to a single family house in Texas. The electric box is surface mounted to the exposed studs in my garage so I don't even need to cut open the dry wall. Curios to see why the hosts got a quote of CAD3000 and 6000 for installation.
insane price gouging by electricians.. a lot of people are victims of the electrician’s monopoly.. Anyone who is manually inclined can do this safely for under $500 (50 amp breaker, Nema 14-50 box and outlet, conduit if required, #8 wire) given 2-3 hours of time invested..😊
It's less than $1,000 US to install a top speed level II charger in your house if you do it yourself, which is remarkably straightforward. It took me the better part of half a day with no special tools, and I even sprung for the Canadian built charger.
i think every small strip mall needs an EV fast-charging station. i also think that these cars need to come down a lot in price. we don't need all the extra bells and whilsts just a reverse camera and smart phone connectivity, Bluetooth bare minimum. just make an electric civic and people will start to adopt this tech. but your right its and enthusiasts kinda product right now and will stay that way if car manufactures continue to make them luxery items.
They should get there. For purchase price, they are getting much closer, if you account for like equipment and performance. In some instances, it's about $5k more. And you can easily make that up in fuel costs in a few years. But yes, every strip mall needs lvl 2 and 3 chargers
It's really just the price of the batteries currently. The battery pack for most cost more then a engine and fuel system on a normal car. After they become more common the prices should go down by sheer volume.
Just ask my local dealer even I reserved this and once it arrives Roseville ca will still charge 7500 markup which make this more than Lexus rz 450e so I gave up on this one. Plus I think gv70e will be better looking and roomier car.
I like the front end, but I'm in the minority that thinks the ev6 is really sharp-looking. I rarely DC fast charge my EV and I have a station a mile from my home. You can't beat 11 cents a kWh with a 240-volt plug in your garage which I installed with about $100 in materials myself. If you live in a rental, I agree, an EV is not a great choice at the moment.
My Kia Niro EV gets easily over 450km of range everyday usage. I wouldn't get anything other than the Niro. And it's reasonably priced. 10% - 80% in about 40 mins. Niro for the win.
You must be driving very gently to get 280 miles of range on a car with 240 miles of range. For me that would be the equivalent of 230 watts/miles. For you I think that is 143 watts/kilometer or around 16.7Kw/100km. That is probably due to the 200hp motor. For everyday use that is a good amount of hp for the vast majority of people and allows more efficiency then more powerful electric motors.. I just prefer the slightly faster models by other manufacturers.
Who did you get charge installation quotes from? My electrician put it in for $250, and the charger was $650 with the Kia discount. Petro Canada also has fast chargers.
I preordered a Cadillac Lyriq AWD. I'm just hoping the interior is as spacious and luxurious as the XT5 or XT6 and I'll be perfectly satisfied. Heated/Cooled/Massage seats with AUTONOMOUS SUPERCRUISE
Note, the these three EV6/Ioniq 5/GV60 cousins currently cannot even take advantage of the full benefits of 350 kW charging and usually charge at a much slower rate that is similar 150 kW. Reviews have said that it's not worth the trouble tracking down a hard-to-find 350 kW charger and to just go to the much more common 150 kW charger. The charge time difference isn't all that much, 25 minutes vs. 18 minutes from 10% to 80%.

My house (also in the US) was probably a more complicated case, with a detached garage and the panel in the basement. I paid $1350 to get wiring run to the garage (about 20' away from the house) + the 14-50 outlet, but a "normal" house with an attached garage I'd expect to be much cheaper.
It's literally an electric dryer outlet
You know what is a sacrifice? $4.75/gallon gas for plain unleaded.
“Boost” button. Genesis living that F&F life and I love it.
Porsche says hi xD
What dat mean?
It needs to say "Go, Baby, Go"
Its great haha! So not only is it a clever and simple way to take advantage of that thermal overhead, but you get a feckin boost button! love it.
Needs a "DANGER TO MANIFOLD" Easter egg.

Nah, that exterior is barf.

Almost all of these "SUVs" are actually blinged and raised econohatches
Yeah, this car is just hideous and overstyled. Looks like it was designed by the people at Hyundai and Kia instead of Genesis lol.

I have been quoted $10k in California for the panel upgrade in order to charge an electric car.
Thanks gentlemen for taking the time to review and give your honest opinions, greatly appreciated, thanks to the Camera man for sticking it out in all those back seat reviews!
I actually kinda like the front end, definitely caught my attention when I saw the thumbnail
I have met several Ionic 5/EV6 owners when charging. They spoke enthusiastically about their cars and how easy it was to make long trips in them. In much of the US EA charging coverage is pretty good and getting better.
Electrify America is the best option. Most reliable, most charging options (55kw, 150kw, 350kw), all you NEED is a credit card
Frustrate America chargers are notoriously unreliable. Failure rates exceed 50%.
And they are not prepared to keep them maintainaned.
Please write your local and federal government officials and ask them not to subsidize more chargers with irresponsible companies that have very frustrating user experiences.
Telling them they have problems with their chargers doesn't help with Electrify America (frustrate and stifle America's electric growth, that's what is happening)
Please write your officials.
Not sure on that working properly. Hyundai/Kia is now recalling 500k cars for engine fires.

The VW Buzz is on that list, too. But the real question for any EV is range and charging time.
If you have a decent car commute and don’t do a lot of road trips, I’d argue that EVs can appeal to more than just “enthusiasts”. Charging at home is very convenient, and there is a luxurious element to the low NVH of most EVs.
Yep EV's are the ultimate daily commuters if one's intention isn't to use them for road trips. Agree.

The truth is that for commuting a range of 100-150 miles is plenty.

This the modern nissan juke of genesis cars
Ok, The mustang EV cousin Genesis is not "that" bad. The rear looks better than the face...but that's just my dating preference too.
You guys and this channel are awesome. Best car channel out there! Just keeps getting better 👍
It's less than $1,000 US to install a top speed level II charger in your house if you do it yourself, which is remarkably straightforward. It took me the better part of half a day with no special tools, and I even sprung for the Canadian built charger.
I really appreciate the addition of showing the logistics of owning an EV. Also, cheers from my home town of St George!
i think every small strip mall needs an EV fast-charging station. i also think that these cars need to come down a lot in price. we don't need all the extra bells and whilsts just a reverse camera and smart phone connectivity, Bluetooth bare minimum. just make an electric civic and people will start to adopt this tech. but your right its and enthusiasts kinda product right now and will stay that way if car manufactures continue to make them luxery items.
I’m going to be slammed by others in the comments section, but I really like how the GV60 looks, even in that light green.
Just ask my local dealer even I reserved this and once it arrives Roseville ca will still charge 7500 markup which make this more than Lexus rz 450e so I gave up on this one. Plus I think gv70e will be better looking and roomier car.
It really sucks that dealer greed has lost them a sale
I dislike the coupe-SUV trend but this one is the best looking by far IMO.
i actually think the front is pretty sick not gonna lie
Who did you get charge installation quotes from? My electrician put it in for $250, and the charger was $650 with the Kia discount.

Note, the these three EV6/Ioniq 5/GV60 cousins currently cannot even take advantage of the full benefits of 350 kW charging and usually charge at a much slower rate that is similar 150 kW. You should always keep a 100 mile extension cord with your E.V at all times. Just in case. 😳
Get the optional pedals. Like the Flintstones
😂😂😂😂 thats hilarious
