Me too; I'll be sixty in February. My dad joked about the female crew members uniforms - the short skirts. Yes; Marta and Rachael Welch in One Million Years BC. There was also a cartoon Herculodes that had a cave woman in it; I think the character was based on Rachael.
@@wiseonwords I believe it was because of the scene where Marta is killed by Garth with an explosive. It was pretty brutal back in the day. Yet the TV series, "Combat" showed much more brutality IMO. Not sure how that show fared in by the BBC. Please correct me if I'm wrong for the reason why the BBC banned the episode.
They had to be martial dances; steps no longer used to train children in the art of warfare. Steps that might prepare them for another kind of hand to hand combat.
According to her autobiography, Yvonne made up the dance pretty much on the spot. He told her to do a demented dance. And yes she is totally green. She stood naked while a man spray-painted her body. This was against the union rules, and he could have been fired. But there was no one else who could have done the job. She did not get along with Shatner, and Nimoy teased her about her shaved eyebrows. "If you can grow a beard, you can grow your eyebrows back." The paint left globs in her arm pits.
Nobody got along with Shatner during the original series. Shatner was too much of an egomaniac. Nimoy and Shatner became close friends in later years when Nimoy struggled with alcoholism and Shatner helped get and stay dry. Shatner himself is a reformed alcoholic.
"Liquid bandage" spray was used to keep Yvonne from sweating off the green body makeup. When they shot the scene where Marta is taken outside into the planet's poisonous atmosphere and she pleads for her life with outstretched arms, the stuff formed cobwebby globs and it looked like green moss hanging from her armpits. Fortunately, it didn't show up on film.
The late Yvonne Craig was a very talented actress.she was great not just as Batgirl in 1960s Batman, but also highly memorable as Martha in Star trek episode Whom Gods Destroy. She has been memorable in many other shows such as Man from Uncle, etc.
I kinda expected Kirk to say, "They say no Earth male can resist an Orion woman. So, who's resisting?" :) Anyway, great episode, Garth was both charismatic and insane! Always a huge fan of Yvonne's! Thanks for posting, and THUMBS UP!
1:26 the look kirk gives spock LOL!! Did anybody read the wiki page on the slave girl, Yvonne Craig? She didn't graduate high school because of a single physical education credit, yet she became an awesome ballet dancer and stunt girl! wtf
The music and dance were very similar to the first "pilot" of Star Trek where Susan Oliver performed a similar dance with almost identical music. However, I personally believe this actress gave a much better performance while dancing. She had prior dance experience that Susan Oliver didn't have. Just look at the awesome muscle tone of her legs and the "V" format of her back. She definitely had ballet dance experience during well beyond the regular experience of dancers from the later 1960s. But the dream sequence by Captain Pike with the green Orion dancer (Susan Oliver) set the stage for all green Orions in Star Trek lore after the original pilot. IMHO.
Yvonne Craig was a ballet dancer before she became an actress. I actually was unaware that she was the one who played Marta. I always remembered her as Batgirl in the 60s batman show
I also watched Star Trek TV episodes here where I live in Asia. I liked the series very much but I was also not aware of these actresses at that time, specially about late Ms. Yvonne Craig who has also starred as Batgirl. Thank you for the explanation. Sorry about the late comment.
I prefer Susan Oliver's dance as well as the music they reused in "Wolf in the Fold" which seems substantially different to this. I'm also not a fan of the short-haired women on Star Trek.
Curiously, this episode was banned in the UK (along with Miri, Plato's Stepchildren, and The Empath) "because they all dealt most unpleasantly with the already unpleasant subjects of madness, torture, sadism and disease". The odd thing is that I distinctly remember this episode from my childhood (unlike the other three).
You wrote that?" "Yesterday, as a matter of fact." "It was written by an Earth man named Shakespeare a long time ago!" "Which does not alter the fact that I wrote it again yesterday!"
I'vs seen this episode a few times...and just noticed something...when she dances away from the men, at the end, they shined a GREEN LIGHT on her to make her look more GREEN!
In the Star Trek pilot "The Cage," the captive Earth woman Vina (Susan Oliver) appeared in the illusory guise of a green Orion slave girl. But in this episode, there's really no on-screen evidence that Marta is or was a slave, or even that she's an Orion. All we know is, she's green!
If she started dancing around me like she's doing William Shatner at 1:35 I'd be breathing hard, my pulse racing and I'd be breaking out in a cold sweat
Marta is being played by the original Barbara Gordon Batgirl from the 60s. I often wonder if Yvonne Craig's performance here, wasn't the inspiration for "Harley Quinn" of Fox's Batman aminated series and later comics. 🤔
Marta's poetry is an actual potem by A.E.Housman: In midnights of November, When Dead Mans Fair is nigh, And danger in the valley, And anger in the sky, Around the huddling homesteads The leafless timber roars, And the dead call the dying And finger at the doors. Oh, yonder faltering fingers Are hands I used to hold; Their false companion drowses And leaves them in the cold. Oh, to the bed of ocean, To Africk and to Ind, I will arise and follow Along the rainy wind. The night goes out and under With all its train forlorn; Hues in the east assemble And cocks crow up the morn. The living are the living And dead the dead will stay, And I will sort with comrades That face the beam of day.
Yvonne Craig appeared as Batgirl in a PSA promoting equal pay for women. She was in her only season on the show and being paid three times as much as Burt Ward who was in his third season on the show.
Garth: "Marta my dear, won't you dance for our guests?" Marta hesitates Garth: "That was not a request." 😅 After her dance Garth: "She's yours if you wish, Captain." Can't remember what Kirk said, but if it was anything other than "I'll take her".. 😅.
Ok, I'm not usually the type to beg for likes but this is just too good to pass up on. Like if you'd pay damn good money to see Spock dance like that. ;)
I was around 7 and used to watch trek with my dad when it came on in the 60s. I thought she was the prettiest lady I ever saw!
Me too; I'll be sixty in February. My dad joked about the female crew members uniforms - the short skirts. Yes; Marta and Rachael Welch in One Million Years BC. There was also a cartoon Herculodes that had a cave woman in it; I think the character was based on Rachael.

Mr. Spock! Talk about a back handed compliment! :P
Rest in peace Leonard Nimoy and Yvonne Craig. Thank you for being a part of our lives.
Me too!
Whom Gods Destroy is a great episode. Yvonne Craig as Marta was superb! RIP.
Damn, I love Star Trek and all those Green Women...never better TV aired EVER!❤
The question is: What the heck kind of dances did they teach Spock in nursery school?

Yvonne was a trained ballet dancer, it must have been hard for her to dance "demented"
Yvonne Craig knew how to entertain. That is why she got the best roles from the 1960's to the 1970's as an actress.

Yvonne's dance skills are those of a confident performer!
Man, what a beautiful woman!
Steve Ihnat died about five years after this episode was filmed, he was only 37.
Even Marta knows not to waste any time caressing Spock.
I said the same thing as she walked by him. Lol
Spock is only interested in Kirk. And there is no breaking him from that.
The late Yvonne Craig was a very talented actress.she was great not just as Batgirl in 1960s Batman, but also highly memorable as Martha in Star trek episode Whom Gods Destroy. She has been memorable in many other shows such as Man from Uncle, etc.
Also, My Three Sons. As she was a meter maid eho gave Steve Douglas a ticket.
@@danbasta3677 i've been trying to find a youtube vid with her on an episode of the Mod Squad
Did she act in Man from UNCLE also? Thanks for your information.
Sorry for the late comment.
She was a guest star in Wild Wild West as well.
Yvonne Craig was indeed very talented and lovely lady. I hope managed get more intelligent roles before her career ended.
"I find it mildly interesting" (mr. Spock)
She did a good job on her dancing.
I was a child and, after seeing this, i desperately searched for a green girl but could not find any 😊
Rest In Peace, Yvonne Craig
When he said "Marta,. my dear", I couldn't help thinking of Paul McCartney! LOL

Ok, stop everything!!!
Did Spock just imply that he has learned how to dance like this in Vulcan nursery school?! XD
He said She yours if u wish, Kirk was already thinking she is mine
Marta was my favourite guest star. I chose it as a possible baby name. Yes! I was going to name my first born after her.
Marta my dear, you have always been my inspiration.
Awesome Star Trek episode classic gem!!
My husband remembers this episode very well.
Apr 22, 2020 @ 7:40 pm
She played Batgirl from 1967-1968. She played Marta on Star Trek in 1969.
I just wonder who are the people that gave this a thumbs down ? The clip was cool and she was great !
its probably the jealous star wars fans who are mad that *THIS* is the original "hot sexy space babe in revealing clothes," not Leia Skywalker.
If I were to complain, it would be that her dance was not long enough. It left me wanting for more.
1:26 the look kirk gives spock LOL!! Did anybody read the wiki page on the slave girl, Yvonne Craig? She didn't graduate high school because of a single physical education credit, yet she became an awesome ballet dancer and stunt girl! wtf

Wow...Thanks Tom. From down the QEW in Mississauga.
Born in Slovakia. He had a lot of charisma.
That Lady was a Doll. Will always be remembered sexy beyond belief. Yvonne Craig. Simply. Wow
yvonne craig was a most magnificent specimen of female perfection.
Agreed. A great dancer, she was also Batgirl. She oozes sex appeal.
The Batgirl episodes of the old Batman series were my favorite ones
My favorite Orion Slave Girl
Soo true. 10/10 woman right there
Oh man! I can’t even count the number of times I have rewatched this scene and loved it every time.
wow i was not expecting much but bravo bravo.
Yvonne Craig was trained in ballet and classical theater. This was her career before she became big in TV and film.
Marta was definitely tweeking for a second there.

Madly in love with her when I was young...
I sent a sympathy card to Yvonne's family when she passed away.I had a crush on that lady and will miss her.

You wrote that?"
"Yesterday, as a matter of fact."
"It was written by an Earth man named Shakespeare a long time ago!"
"Which does not alter the fact that I wrote it again yesterday!"
Unmatched writing and character development.
As a technicality, she never said that it was her original creation. She merely said she wrote it. It kind leaves some room open for interpretation.
"That was not a request" - simple line, tossed off casually, became a common idiom, an original line then.
All I can say is honestly the only thing I remember about this episode is Yvonne Craig and her green Orion slave girl dance.
yvonne craig. Just stunning
How many multi-hued children did Kirk leave all over the universe? Deadbeat's got to have unpaid child support up the intergalactic wazoo.
