    Wow this was a gold mine of an interview. Not only from the perspective of a fallout fan, but from the perspective of an artist, a writer, a programmer, and a team manager as well. We have thousands of books on how to be a good film director, hundreds of thousands on how to be a good author, but its these little bits of advice from the unsung greats that keep video game writing an advancing art form.
    Thanks for it

    ‘At the end of the day, the core game should of been released in a better state, and we have no one else to blame but ourselves.’ That right there is why consumers still support Black Isle/Obsidian studios, they have always focused around their mechanics and making the best out of their game, taking the time they need to be able to finish, in short, I think obsidian had took a note on NV when in development, considering that Bethesda had rushed them, they have learned and gained patience to finish their game and go on to say ‘When it’s done, its done.’ And that I support

    Such and insightful guy, so much experience with the good and the bad.
    That villain / rival bit was really good. Reminds of a major gripe with Fo4 factions. We simply cannot influence, reason with, or change their minds in the slightest.
    Perhaps linked to the player-character not being that big a deal, like he mentioned - the factions aren't obsessed or even care if the sole-survivor is with them or against them - outside of gameplay purposes s/he's not special and realistically irrelevant.
    The writing part speaks to Fo76's hours upon hours of endless and often pointless holo-tape prattling, quantity can hurt if it's not practical. I wonder if those 10,000 lines he wrote were the same that subsequently got cut for being excessive...

    It's so baffling how Bethesda never hired Chris to be on their writing team like if I had bought the Fallout brand I would hire it's creators to help curate. Both parties win. So many future possibilities, but 76 definitely tanked the brand.

      I know what you mean. I had an assumption going into these videos that Bethesda fucked Obsidian, particularly when it came to the Metacritic score, but the more I've talked with the developers(most notably one who left the industry entirely, so there's seemingly no reason see why he'd try to stay in the graces of BGS), the more I've realized my intial take on their relationship was wrong.

    this was the best thing to come home to after a long day at work! It's interesting to hear about all the challenges they faced while making the DLCs because New Vegas is, in my opinion, a prime example of exactly how DLC should be done. Even in the face of time constraints and extra work piled on, they still delivered some of the best DLC ever made. What Chris said at the end in response to the 10,000 words quote was really wise and something that I actually really needed to hear as a writer. Thanks again for another awesome video and keep up the good work!

    • @Capta1nAsh
      @Capta1nAsh 4 роки тому +4

      Christopher Rhudy I don’t think it’s an unpopular opinion, OW is good but it somehow feels more undercooked than NV and lacks replay value. Also I wasn’t a fan of the artificial difficulty from playing above normal. Large groups of high hp and high damage enemies with generous hitboxes made the first area a pain. Supernova felt like a time waste and the ending speech options were absurd. Like I failed a check purely because I chose the wrong weapons stat. What bullshit

      @@Capta1nAsh glad it wasn't just me... I could tell it wasn't going to be the best after Edgewater... SMH. I mean it wasn't bad, but it was shallow and choice was kinda faked

    • @swozzlesticks3068
      @swozzlesticks3068 4 роки тому +2

      @@ChristopherRhudy I mean eh it's a new series they need to establish a lot. Like New Vegas benefits so much from the establishment of the NCR especially, but also the brotherhood and followers of the apocalypse. If you look back at fallout 1, the choice you have when dealing with the Khans is even less interesting than the choice with edgewater. Same with Junktown really, none of it is really complex or deep and look where the series ended up. So while yeah literally any day of the week, New Vegas is the better game by far narratively, it doesn't mean the series will always be subpar.

  • @RadianHelix

    This was great! I definitely agree with Chris's end notes: getting something done in little daily bricks is very gratifying. Maybe that character's intro, outline, that chunk you need, audition sheets, audio cutting -- and yeah, I spent all of 2012, and all of 2014 writing New California and i 100% agree that an editor to check you work and rip stuff out is important. In 2018 I wouldn't write half of that shit, especially exposition. Some people very much love it, but taking stuff OUT of a design to instead refocus on making more important paths and more important character moments is more vital than having a big quest and big open world.
    We get dinged by the Rodger&Ebert Reviewbois the hardest for things like, having an open world that feels empty (as if a wasteland is supposed to be a theme park,) the companions slope off after leaving the Vault, and feeling like it's a linear railroad (when it absolutely isn't, anymore than that many branches can be if there is only 1 logically optimal route through something.) It also doesn't help that the engine is trash and can't handle is own memory in an elegant way. So we made a lot of the same mistakes as the game we were modding.
    Glad to have that block of mistakes out of the way as a modder before jumping into my career. :p

      I think what you did with New California was amazing. I've stalked your updates for years lol. It's nice to finally hear the developers of this game take responsibility for having too big and ambition and not being organized enough to pull it off. I understand they were on a tight schedule but it's seems like fans seem to think Bethesda (not defending Bethesda theyve got problems to) was solely responsible for the issues in new vegas. When the reality is the new vegas development just bit off way more than they could chew in that amount of time and as a result we got a broken fallout nv. Everyone likes to act like if they had a few more months everything would be perfect but that's clearly not the case. I love the studio and all the great work they do I just think they were a bit to small, unorganized and unexperienced with a game of that size. I love nv but it's still always gonna be broken fallout 3.5 to me.
