    Hi Rumade, great videos!😃 Just acquired a fibre glass pond from my brothers next door neighbour so was looking for tips etc Watching this has made me think about putting a video on my channel regarding the installation of the pond, so that is what i will do, looking to end of octoberfor start, need a skip as well. Know Slough well and i am in Aylesbury, so not too far. Looking forward to an update on your pond regarding wildlife , plants etc

      @KB996 my greatest advice to you is to dig it a bit deeper than you need to. Ours is not quite level so the water does spill over at one end

    • @KB996
      @KB996 26 днів тому

      Hi Ru My liner is approx 4 feet deep in the middle section😟 Got skip on tuesday, started digging on Wednesday but have to be careful as have a knee issue, so only doing 4 hrs at a time. Hell of a lot of dirt in the skip and now digging grey clay and have hit the water table , so extremely grubby🤣🤣 Will keep you updated with progress.👍

      Thanks for advice Rumade. Going to make sure if fits in the very large hole and then slip sharp sand into the gaps. The liner is old style, so over quarter of an inch thick!! Going to keep some clay so that i can build up the plant ledges and make an access slope for wildlife. Regards kev

    Thanks you for this video. Im looking to lay stepping stones from my patio area across my lawn to a summerhouse. What can I do to eventually hide the sandy border around the stones. Can grass grow around to hide the sand. Sorry if this is a silly question 😊

    • @Rumade
      @Rumade 2 місяці тому

      @mahis1257 eventually the grass will start to grow in from the sides and the sand will be hidden. Takes about a few months

  • @CHatty-g2q

    bad for wildlife - creatures need shallow slopes for access and breeding. Young creatures need to be able to exit easily as well.

    • @Rumade
      @Rumade 3 місяці тому

      @CHatty-g2q there are logs for easy access in and out, and shallow areas created with bricks on the shelf areas but thanks for your feedback!

    Sadly, she acts as if STRAW and HAY bales are the same. They are not. You should NEVER grow in hay because of all of the seeds in it. Yup, she ended up with grass everywhere. I have done straw bale gardening for 15 years. Each bale might get a few sprouts of grass growing out of them, but If the bales are sufficiently watered, you just pull and they come out easily. I highly recommend STRAW bale gardening. Don't use Hay.

    Did you prepare the bales? I just left 2 out to rot naturally and had grass growing then did 2 putting fertilizer on top and watered every other day. No grass grew on the last 2 going to keep trying..

    • @gardenista7836
      @gardenista7836 4 місяці тому

      I have done straw bale gardening for years. Don't use hay, get straw. Then you "season" them with a good organic fertilizer. If you are in the U.S., I love Milorganite. Look online for how to season straw bale gardens. You put the fertilizer on in a specific quantity over a period of about ten days, early in the season. I'm growing corn this year and absolutely amazed how well it is doing. Good luck!

    Pretty good results. Reminds me of my wife's grandma "aquiring" plants and trees at the local nursey. Like "oops" did that bit of limb accidently fall in my bag 🙂. I am just getting into grafting. I wonder if you would have redid, as in made new cuts on the grafts that fell apart. I mean the root stocks all took, that half is established, just needed a 2nd attempt at the graft. I share your observations on grafting tape. Maybe where I have experience as an electrician, but electrical tape seems like it can do the same job, Lord knows I have used that tape as a bandage to graft my own broken skin too many times to count, sure it can hold two sticks together, thats what that tape does is pulls tighter with its elastic traits and stays tight with its gooey traits, plus keeps out bugs and water.

    • @Rumade

      A couple of ones that failed have the rootstock growing on, so I may graft again on it next year

    Hi, has any of the trees survived? I successfully grafted a flowering one onto my regular fruit cherry tree

    • @Rumade

      Yes, 2 of them survived well in pots. A couple of others had graft fails, and some were destroyed when a neighbour took down a fence. 2 of my Bramley apple grafts worked too.

    I also bought off Ebay - 65 bulbs and I paid £16. I have planted them today under the shade (under my Bay tree). I am really hopeful that they get established... How are yours now after 3 years?

    • @Rumade
      @Rumade 6 місяців тому

      The one that's near our fire pit patio has done well and started spreading, despite being badly trampled a few times. The ones around the apple tree have not done so well- they have strong competition from bluebells. But I know it is there because I could smell it while working in that area

    Why do you need to use sand? Why not just use some topsoil? Genuine question cos I wanna put some in my garden.

    • @Rumade
      @Rumade 7 місяців тому

      The sand helps with levelling, without becoming compacted, and keep its volume when wet or dry. Topsoil will expand or shrink depending on how wet it is, will become compacted over time, and could make a clay pan underneath that traps water. So eventually you'd have a wobbly stone with a puddle underneath it, that squelches out when trodden on. At least that's my understanding. Thanks for the question!

      @togetvj 6 місяців тому

      I just put my stepping stones on soil, the lawn is on a slight slope. They've been there for 14 years and are perfectly stable. You just have to get it right first time, make sure the soil is flattened and even so there is no wobble. This year, I am going to raise them as over time the rain has managed to make them sink but it did take 14 years! This is my lawn... smallscalegardens.blogspot.com/2023/07/easy-way-to-have-nice-lawn.html

    • @Rumade
      @Rumade 7 місяців тому

      You need to do it while the tree is still dormant but the sap has begun to rise. So if you see new leaf/flower buds forming, but they haven't opened yet, that's the best time

    Pillaging? What do you think our hunter gatherer ancestors did? Just walk past wild edibles and say hay, let's have pizza tonight, as long as you only take a small amount from a patch there is no harm done.

    • @Rumade

      The problem is that people are not just taking a small amount. For starters there are more humans around taking from the same area, and secondly there are foragers picking for cash and taking huge amounts of wild garlic home.

However a piece you found is considered a gift from Wakan Tanka. You thank the tree by leaving corn meal and it makes your magic more powerful because Wakan Tanka blesses your intention if it is for your betterment as well as beneficial to your people.
