- To be a great corrections officer there are many traits and skills needed. Today, Steve Maynard of GUARDIAN RFID gives you his four tips to be the greatest officer you can be.
1. Learn something new everyday. Every day inside a prison or jail facility will be different from the day before. To be the best Correctional Officer you can be, you should learn everything you can from that particular day.
2. Keep personal and professional life separate. This is most likely easier said than done, but it is definitely crucial as a corrections officer. You don't want the emotions of your professional life seeping into your personal relationships. You also do not want inmates knowing about your personal life.
3. Be honest with your co-workers and the inmates. Integrity is very important when it comes to corrections. Everyday you lean on your co-workers to help protect you and you do not want to compromise that relationship by lying. Inmates also want to know that your word is gold. If you lie to them, you can start a dangerous game you do not want to be a part of.
4. Take your time conducting your duties. There is a lot going on during the day for correctional officers, but taking your time is very important. You do not want to fly through your rounds or shake downs. These tasks are very important to the safety of everyone in the facility and are dependent on you doing them right.

Good communications and consistency is needed when you working with criminal minds! Treat them with respect and show no weaknesses!! You have to be strong physically and mentally when dealing with inmates!! Be a example for you colleagues show respect and courage without courage, you can’t practice any other virtue consistently!! To build a strong team you need to become a strong leader so others can follow you!!
