Honestly speaking, I think Lord Fredrik is a better final boss than Tiki Tong from Donkey Kong Country Returns. Here's why: 1. His boss battle isn't preceded by an annoyingly hard Rocketbarrel sequence. 2. He goes down in nine hits, which is just as much as the other bosses in Tropical Freeze (Tiki Tong only went down in eight hits, which isn't as much as the other bosses in Returns). 3. Some of his attacks (making the platforms sink in the lava and firing ice dragons at the platforms) urge the player to stay focused on the arena as well as the boss. 4. It's not much, but the player is able to box him after the battle just like the other bosses (whereas the player couldn't box Tiki Tong into oblivion). 5. His battle theme is REALLY COOL. Tiki Tong's battle theme was cool too (it was a remix of the song the Tikis played to hypnotize the animals on DK Island), but I think Lord Fredrik's theme blows it out of the water.
I'm not gonna argue that Fredrik was a better boss, because he most certainly was. However, I do feel that the rocketbarrel sequence played an important role in terms of build up. It was the only boss that you actually had to do something just to face (within the stage itself, of course) which did help giving players (or me, at least) this kind of "Okay, this is it" feeling.about the whole thing. Fredrik was teased in the beginning, but his boss fight just kinda came and went, like the other ones in the game. Another thing, Tiki Tong's intro was a CGI video, that showed all the previous bosses being sacrificed to be a part of him. Fredrik just had another in-game cutscene (probably because Retro didn't have time for 4 different CGI scenes, due to there being more characters this time around) which once again made him stand out a little less from the rest. Again, Fredrik was the better boss fight. Better design, better attack patterns, and way better boss theme. But I do think it could've been even better with some pre-battle build up.
shajita AGREED. Fredrick didnt have the buildup that Tiki Tong had. They couldve done something simple like have ominous ambient music playing as you descend deeper into the volcano. The music gets stronger then BAM they use a cutscene (either CGI or in-game) and Fredrick is introduced then the fight begins. Even Jungle Beat's final boss had a dramatic heart pounding buildup and he was the easiest fight in any DK game :/
shajita To be fair, you could see Fredrik in the intro sequence freezing the entire DK island all by himself, whereas you could only see Tiki Tong at the very end :p
The94Venom Fair point. Tiki Tong did essentially come out of no where. (In fact I think when I first began the game I thought that giant head that came out of the volcano crater was going to be the final boss)
It's a testament to how truly brilliant this game and David Wise are that they took the walrus - nature's clown - and made such a badass final boss with one.
I would have liked some dynamic music of heavy guitar rock mixed with an operatic viking war chant. I guess that's why we have Spinal's theme from the new Killer Instinct.
I fully agree, always these orchestrated final boss themes, making things seem much more epic than they are (at least sometimes), like SMG2's final boss, which was a joke but still had to have that choir in the background... but let's not talk about Mario games here :P
I prefered the creepy music of Tiki tong, but this was at still unusual for a boss music, so I'll give the music 7/10. The fight deserves 5/10, it was terrible.
I love this guy's sick dance moves when you're tying to throw his minions at him. It's a small touch, but it's cool that even a brutal warlord like him can have a silly side.
Lord Fredrik is a very smart final boss. Definitely better than several of the Bowser battles in the Mario games. Heck, the bosses in Tropical Freeze are a big reminder of why the Koopalings should have stayed dead after NSMB Wii!
Lordmewtwo the 3rd I really liked that. For the first time since SMB2, a 2D Mario game had unique bosses that weren't the Koopalings (and that itself wasn't a big deal yet since their only prior appearances were SMB3 and SMW). I appreciate that NSMB Wii brought the Koopalings back for the sake of nostalgia and fanservice, but using them yet again in NSMB2 and U was simply uncalled for. Then again, I have issues with the mere existence of those last two games. =/
Gustavo Paz Fully agree with what you said. The first NSMB on DS was the best one because it felt fresh, and each boss was a different monster. The Koopalings are essentially the same enemy just copy and pasted with a slightly different tactic each time - it gets old very quick. Anyway DKC bosses have always shat all over SMB bosses, and this game just further cements that fact.
Don't want to start complaining about a final boss that was done reasonably well, but there were a number of things that could have been done to amplify it. For example, this was my idea of how it could have went, since all of the bosses in the game had three distinct phases. For this one, similar to the Owl's battle, it should have taken place in three separate arena's. Round 1: Takes place on the deck of the Snowmad Ark. Mainly involves Frederik siccing his troops on you in waves as he watches from the background. After several waves including the best of his soldiers, he jumps on the stage and attacks with a weapon different than his magical horn: I would imaging something like a menacing halberd/spear doubled with a shield in the other hand. Basically, classing spear and shield combo where you have to attack by damaging the shield with his remaining troops. Once the shield is gone, attack him directly from the back once he charges. After three successful hits, Frederik breaks the deck in a rage and enters into the second round. Round 2: Takes place within the hull of the Ark. Here, Frederik challenges you one-on-one with numerous viking weaponry around the chamber to utilize. In this phase, I imagine a combination of swords, clubs, and axes; the standard Viking weaponry. At this point, Frederik has found a way of making himself invincible by keeping you away from hitting him. Instead of hitting him directly, you must focus on destroying the floor of the Ark yourself with watermelon bombs while avoiding his powerful attacks. Once the floor crumbles, the final phase begins. Round 3: Takes place roughly where the battle was in the game: throneroom mixed with lava and ice. This would basically pan out the same way it did in the game, with Frederik resorting to his ultimate weapon: the magical horn. However, it would be improved upon by Frederik creating himself armor out of ice (hey, if you control ice and are a heavyweight, why not take advantage of armor?) It takes numerous hits from the soldiers to shatter his armor, which is when he jumps to the foreground to settle matters up close and personal with the charges he used in the game. For the final hit, he creates a larger ice dragon like the one he used on the island and rides it into the battle. Destroy the dragon and go in for the final hit as he charges at 4x speed as the beginning of the phase. Now THAT would have been a memorable fight, along with a theme that actually contained the Snowmad theme.
+CrimsonEbonyTears Agree with you, the boss was cool, but too classical for a final boss. They should have added different phases like you described it
I won't lie, I was kinda expecting a yeti to be the final boss, but make no mistake, this guy certainly will have you throwing your controller in the air. He's THAT HARD.
You know, Fredrick is one of the last names I'd give a boss unless the boss was a joke. But it suits him, but I find it strange that he has a real name and the other bosses don't.
Fredrik is actually a normal name here in Norway, which is fitting considering they are supposed to be scandinavian vikings. As a norwegian, I really like this name, enemy faction and game, but I dunno why the other bosses have names that are not real names.
I know it's a North European name, an awesome one to boot. It's on my list of names I could give to my hypothetical son. I guess the other bosses could be titles or nicknames. I guess Skowl wouldn't be as intimidating if his name was Olaf. Or if Bashmaster was just Swen.
There's a theory on the WMG tab on TvTropes stating that the Returns duology is a prequel to the SNES trilogy. The reasons cited being: -Tropical Freeze is the origin of Gorilla Glacier, (which was absent in the Returns) -Cranky Kong is apparently still young enough to join DK on the adventure and isn't AS cranky/ irritable as Country -DK didn't know how to swim in Returns, he finally learns in Tropical Freeze, and he of course is still able to do so in Country -DK, Diddy, and Dixie all look younger
Lord Fredrick is cooler than King K. Rool. Yeah, I went there. Also, badass heavy metal theme. Donkey Kong and metal just goes really well together, it always did.
Things I like about the Lord Fredrick fight: He uses quite a few different attacks, but they have a pattern that you can learn. If you're skilled enough, you can finish him off very quickly, since you always have 3 chances to hit him during his charges. His music is pretty good. The fight has a good difficulty progression. Things I don't like about the fight: There's buildup to find out who the Snowmad leader is, and then it turns out it's a fat walrus with no discernible facial features. The giant ice dragon was shown to be a major threat in the opening, but in the fight he just uses them for two attacks and they don't have much impact. The hitboxes for his back and head when he's charging are hard to figure out, and you can easily get hit because of this. The arena is a bland lava pit and isn't as interesting as other boss arenas.
Yeah, I found this boss to be a bit of a letdown after Bashmaster. It's hard to get a better boss arena than an iceberg floating in a giant pool of grape juice
Honestly, my first impression upon seeing him in the pre-boss cutscene was a bit underwhelming. He looks way more menacing in silhouette. HOWEVER, his actual boss fight quickly changed my opinion on him
Hot take (or cold, but that’s a terrible joke): Lord Fredrik was awesome and I’m glad we got him instead of K Rool in this game I do really want K Rool in the next game though
Philippe Gabriel Hmpf, probably they just used Dixie Kong and used the Kong power to get themselves 8 hearts. Try beating him with Cranky or without a partner. This boss isn't easy at all.
Philippe Gabriel I don't want to sound like a braggart, but I was one of those people. I also found Donkey Kong Country Returns to be really easy. It's probably because I beat the original games and have a lot more experience than some of the younger gamers that bought the Wii U.
I remember that there was a bit of a temper tantrum when this game first released and we found out that Fredrik was NOT King K. Rool. People really wanted to believe that he was K. Rool in disguise.
I'm guessing that I should feel proud that I got through this fight without using items (because I wanted to actually beat the final boss as apposed to Returns's where I had to use the banana juice because the rocket barrel part took forever that I didn't want to keep dieing and redoing it) and because I forgot about Dixie's golden hearts from using the kong power-thingy? Yay!
I never really used to like Lord Fredrik, but for a while it's been growing on me. Either he's been inhaling through that horn again or I just like it.
This boss is easier with Diddy. When Dixie hovers she goes a little down first and the boss is able to hit you because of that, especially in his last phase when he goes fucking fast. With Diddy, you keep the same level of your jumps, that allows you to jump earlier or in case you miss jump in the same place and keep the same distance from the ground.
@@100organicfreshmemes5 cranky Is useless in this battle in my opinion...he can't even damage lord Frederick through his spiked helmet and the higher jumps he can make doesn't help in this battle(Sorry for my bad english i'm italian)
The hard rocking of K. Rool's original boss theme is back and turned up to 11! I don't know which of the final boss tunes I like most in the DKC series. It's unfortunate that the GBA release of DKC3 didn't have a final boss track (and yet a second boss track was made but only played with a couple of the regular bosses)
I actually like it. It strangely fits the fight and background taking place. Orchestrated music would probably drain the intenseness from the fight a bit.
People hated this Villain because it wasn't King K Rool? He looks more threathening to me and he also has a Horn that can literally change the Climate of an island when blown
I have a little advice for everyone who has trouble with this boss. 1. Use cranky. 2. Aim for the shoulder blades as that is where his hitbox is biggest. 3. On phase 1: Stand in the middle for all 3 hits and jump when he brings his head down. Follow same jumping advice for all phases. 4. On phase 2: Stand in the middle for hit 1. 3 1/2 blocks away from him on hit 2. 4 blocks away on hit 3. 5. On phase 3: Stand 4 blocks away for all 3 hits. Do that and you should be fine. A few minor problems might happen but nothing too extreme. Probably just missed hits.
That is actually something I did. I played this song over the Yaldabaoth boss from persona 5. To be honest I want to see david wise and shoji meguro pair up to make a sound track for a game.
To this day I feel there was a missed opportunity for a secret/true final boss where you defeat Lord Fredrik and he summons Snowdin, the God of the Snowmads...but then again, this game came out not long after that whole thing with Edward Snowden. Probably would've been real awkward at best lol
Seeing the lava melt the ice again and again creept me out. As if Tiki tong's ghost was there or something, trying to destroy Donkey Kong and chase the snowmads out of his volcano.
Hmm... ...I just got a great idea for a drawing. Oh-ho-hoh. yes, indeed. Ahem, anyway, I really friggin' love the character designs in this game, they all look so cartoony and awesome, but still like the animals they're supposed to be.
Leave it to a Donkey Kong veteran like David Wise to beat a Metroid veteran like Kenji Yamamoto in terms of writing final boss music for a DKC game.
shajita AGREED.
This is a game about apes fighting seals.
And walruses, penguins, baboons, owls fish, and a polar bear with a spiked sledgehammer.
I imagined Dixie Kong in the background showing on the guitar solos while Lord Fedrik and Donkey Kong are fighting
Honestly, I like this music, and I'm glad Nintendo/Retro didn't do the generic orchestral Final Boss theme for the 100th time.
I would have liked some dynamic music of heavy guitar rock mixed with an operatic viking war chant. I guess that's why we have Spinal's theme from the new Killer Instinct.
I fully agree, always these orchestrated final boss themes, making things seem much more epic than they are (at least sometimes), like SMG2's final boss, which was a joke but still had to have that choir in the background... but let's not talk about Mario games here :P
is he also hard on easy mode
I prefered the creepy music of Tiki tong, but this was at still unusual for a boss music, so I'll give the music 7/10. The fight deserves 5/10, it was terrible.
@@francisthompson3772 Metal is unusual for boss music? What games have you been playing.
Who would’ve thought that the hardest part about this boss was to hit a fat walrus while he’s charging
I like that the Scandinavian villains get heavy metal. That's just funny to me.
2:50 I F**KING LOVE THIS PART
I love this guy's sick dance moves when you're tying to throw his minions at him. It's a small touch, but it's cool that even a brutal warlord like him can have a silly side.
Lord Fredrik is a very smart final boss. Definitely better than several of the Bowser battles in the Mario games.
Heck, the bosses in Tropical Freeze are a big reminder of why the Koopalings should have stayed dead after NSMB Wii!
***** Sings show that nothing's gonna change anytime soon, sadly.
Gustavo Paz R.I.P. NSMB DS bosses
Lordmewtwo the 3rd favorite boss is Lakithunder.
My favorite part 0:15
They should have added different phases like you described it
CrimsonEbonyTears this is a really good idea, but make sure the pacing between phases isn't too long.
True.
I won't lie, I was kinda expecting a yeti to be the final boss, but make no mistake, this guy certainly will have you throwing your controller in the air. He's THAT HARD.
yes he's quite difficult, I havent beaten him yet, I cant hit him in the 3rd phase. And he can insta kill you with the lava.
I still think this guy is the walrus version of Shake King
Yeah, I do like the bosses names though.
I can only remember the names of Skowl, Ba-boom, Bashmaster and Frederick.
The last two are Pompy and Fugo. They are all pretty simple and silly, but kinda charming.
There's a theory on the WMG tab on TvTropes stating that the Returns duology is a prequel to the SNES trilogy. The reasons cited being:
-Tropical Freeze is the origin of Gorilla Glacier, (which was absent in the Returns)
-Cranky Kong is apparently still young enough to join DK on the adventure and isn't AS cranky/ irritable as Country
-DK didn't know how to swim in Returns, he finally learns in Tropical Freeze, and he of course is still able to do so in Country
-DK, Diddy, and Dixie all look younger
Lord Fredrick is cooler than King K. Rool. Yeah, I went there.
Also, badass heavy metal theme. Donkey Kong and metal just goes really well together, it always did.
azart61
Technically, he would still exist...
Well duh, he made everything cold, remember?
I know it's a dumb joke, but I couldn't help myself.
When did donkey Kong went metal?
Except for kong k rool
This boss is awesome, and the music is marvelous!
Things I like about the Lord Fredrick fight:
He uses quite a few different attacks, but they have a pattern that you can learn.
If you're skilled enough, you can finish him off very quickly, since you always have 3 chances to hit him during his charges.
His music is pretty good.
The fight has a good difficulty progression.
Things I don't like about the fight:
There's buildup to find out who the Snowmad leader is, and then it turns out it's a fat walrus with no discernible facial features.
@@cradiculous Which is surrounded by piranhas
Honestly, my first impression upon seeing him in the pre-boss cutscene was a bit underwhelming. He looks way more menacing in silhouette. HOWEVER, his actual boss fight quickly changed my opinion on him
In german he is called King "Qual" Meaning King "Pain, agony, torture, torment" So, kinda like King K.Rool (Cruel)! xD
0:23 best part
Donkey Kong has been through these final bosses KING K ROOL , TIKI TONG, AND LORD FREDRICK
Thank u
Hot take (or cold, but that’s a terrible joke): Lord Fredrik was awesome and I’m glad we got him instead of K Rool in this game
I do really want K Rool in the next game though
Everybody's gangsta till the reptile gets out of his bath in the ocean
Man that boss... Still haven't cleared it. It's freaking harder than Captain K. Rool in DKC2!
Philippe Gabriel
Hmpf, probably they just used Dixie Kong and used the Kong power to get themselves 8 hearts. Try beating him with Cranky or without a partner. This boss isn't easy at all.
Yoshifreak128
What about Diddy? would having him still make Lord Fredrik a hard challenge too?
Yoshifreak128 Actually, he was pretty decent with Cranky, since you can farm hearts from the penguins he drops in.
Are you kidding?! K. Rool in DKC2 was a freakin' beast! Especially on the part where he turns himself invisible! YEEESH!!!
Philippe Gabriel I don't want to sound like a braggart, but I was one of those people. I also found Donkey Kong Country Returns to be really easy. It's probably because I beat the original games and have a lot more experience than some of the younger gamers that bought the Wii U.
This boss was the ONLY time in the game where the Kong Pow move actually came in handy.
I like the way he dances around when you are trying to hit him with his minions.
This theme is awsome
This seems more like a theme that would play when you fight bowser when he's pissed
You just predicted bowsers fury
This boss is really tough!! I get to phase 3 and I mess up right away!!
What's the part in the 3rd phase you're having trouble with the most? I'd be happy to give you some advice.
Jacob Williams
It is probably timing the jumps to hit him
mines the ice dragons
It takes concentration and patience. 🥋
Lord Fredrik was the hardest boss to beat because of his speed increasing after every phase
Epic creature
Is this Dave Wise's first go at composing heavy metal?
combined with this bosses difficulty, the music does make the fight more intense
Nope, cranky all the way.
I agree, this was the only time I ever used Diddy in the game. Well except for the times when he was the only barrel in the level.
@@100organicfreshmemes5 cranky Is useless in this battle in my opinion...he can't even damage lord Frederick through his spiked helmet and the higher jumps he can make doesn't help in this battle(Sorry for my bad english i'm italian)
@@fabiovercelli4962 cranky is useless most of the time
It’s just a song about a gorilla fighting a Viking Walrus, no need to go too crazy
David wise:
This is good metal Nintendo
Fun fact: you didn't beat this guy on your first attempt
This is a good rhythm for a final boss beat down :)
Headbang the replay button :)
this song really fits the battle
I defeated Lord Fredrik for the first time recently. I thought he was much more challenging than Tiki Tong in the previous game.
Imagine a leader of a very powerful tribe with a heavy metal boss theme
And his name is Frederick
And he's a fat walrus
Who would know that a walrus could be that fast!
In the list of tropes, Fredrick would effectively be labeled as an "Acrofatic".
***** but K. Rool is fat as all hell
He's the lord of walruses
The hard rocking of K. Rool's original boss theme is back and turned up to 11! I don't know which of the final boss tunes I like most in the DKC series. It's unfortunate that the GBA release of DKC3 didn't have a final boss track (and yet a second boss track was made but only played with a couple of the regular bosses)
I actually like it. It strangely fits the fight and background taking place. Orchestrated music would probably drain the intenseness from the fight a bit.
***** That could work.
People hated this Villain because it wasn't King K Rool?
He looks more threathening to me and
he also has a Horn that can literally change the Climate of an island when blown
METAL KONG
No one would notice if this theme is played during a persona boss fight.
I forgot how truly good the final boss theme was
As a kid I remembered going "Woah" but holy SHIT
awesome boss theme
This is ...AWESOME!!!!!

Epic music for a epic moment
David Wise used the heavy metal style during the final fights in both DKC2 and DKC3. Just an interesting observation.
Wasn't the composer of dkc3 a woman?
Hmm...
...I just got a great idea for a drawing. Oh-ho-hoh. yes, indeed.
Ahem, anyway, I really friggin' love the character designs in this game, they all look so cartoony and awesome, but still like the animals they're supposed to be. And that's something I can always respect.
...Also, Fredrik? 10/10, tenouttaten, best name, BEST NAME.
Catherine J.G what's the drawing gonna be about? I'm very curious!
They should have made the final boss say something like, "Hey Kongs, pick a God and pray!" in a demonic voice before the battle begins.
A walrus talking in a demonic voice.
Okay...
The moment when your final boss turns into undertale for some reason.
Dry bowser
Lord Fredrick should be in smash, he would be a perfect echo for K. Rool
if this boss has revenge im gonna have nightmares and i will pee my pants!!!!!
