Bruce was not a racist that's for sure. Don't make him a saint, and show the bad parts, too.
I agree that one of Bruce's best traits is that he really accepted people no matter what their background. Even though as a kid he baited British boys, when he came to America, he had friends and students of all ethnicities. Even though growing up in Japanese occupation 1940s, when in Seattle, Bruce proposed to a Japanese American girl; his best friend there was a Japanese- American, Taky Kimura -- who became chief instructor at Bruce's school in Seattle. In Los Angeles, his good friend Dan Inosanto and chief instructor, was from Philippines.

WJM had only recently arrived from Hong Kong. He was 5; 10" and weight about the same as Bruce. He was a northern stylist, ie, long range and kicking. He was egged into the fight because mostly by David Chin. Chin was in his corner and says that WJM lost and ran away. At the time, Bruce's conditioning was not the super fit one we all know. He hated his performance because he was winded; this made him train and become the legend.

I've just completed Matthew Polly's book. A very good read. He spent five years in the writing, interviewing 100 people. He has extensive citations. For example, he clears the air on the Wong Jack Man fight: 1. Bruce appeared in a San Francisco theatre and downgraded the classical martial artists. Many took his remarks to be either a/ a challenge or b/ advertisement for his school. One of the guys in the audience was David Chin. 2. Chin was the instigator and with two of his buddies went to see WJM, who just arrived from Hong Kong and working as a waiter in San Francisco Jackson St. restaurant. WJM was not at the Lee 'challenge' but the three guys convinced him to compose a letter to Bruce with WJM signing. Chin then drove to Bruce's Oakland school and delivered the letter. "He was very cocky, putting his feet up on the desk. When he read the letter, he said OK." 3. Chin was the main instigator and arranger. Bruce's only condition was that the fight be at his school. Chin then played both sides, saying that Wong was saying this about Lee and then that Lee was saying this about Wong. When the day arrived, Bruce was very mad. Polly notes that only reading and fighting relaxed him. As Dan Inosanto has also said, "To Bruce, a fight was a great experience." "Bruce would fight or spar anyone." 4. Polly then lists the names of the people there. On Lee's side was James Lee (whose wife had recently died, so of course Bruce was also at an emotional low, since he and Linda were staying at James' home, with Linda taking care of James' two kids) and Linda. On WJM's side was Chin and his three friends. Later, WJM would say that he really didn't know these guys, and that he felt like being set up. 5. The fight lasted about three minutes. Both Linda and David Chin say that WJM literally ran, after spending some time backing up and deflecting Bruce's attacks (BL was using basic Wing Chun, which was fine when the opponent engaged; but not so good when the opponent did not). And then WJM ran into one door to an adjacent room and exited out another door to the main floor (Linda and Chin both say this), and then WJM was tripped up by some display cases (the place had been a furniture store) and couldn't extricate himself. Bruce had also been hitting WJM's back of head while chasing him. As WJM was trapped, Bruce yelled, "Do you give up?" But WJM didn't reply, and he and the others left. Chin said in the car ride back to San Francisco, nobody talked. Also, a Ben Der, a Lee friend said that he went to SF Chinatown to gauge the mood. Before the fight, it was the talk of the week, everyone thought it would be a major event. But Der said the mood in Chinatown was quiet: "I then knew that Bruce had won." 6. James' son writes that when 'Uncle Bruce and he returned home, they were in an upbeat mood, so he also knew that Uncle Bruce had won. If I remember, I think Greglon Lee said that his father told him that Bruce had won. If true, I doubt a father would like to his son. Linda said she was never worried at all and relaxed. 7/ Polly also reports on some propaganda after the fight,, which led to more confusion. In conclusion, his evidence is very strong. While others have written about the fight, there were only four witnesses on WJM's corner, and two on BL's corner: both leading witnesses concur that WJM lost, and lost embarrassingly. But as Polly points out, he can understand that WJM ran, fearing for his life. It was fight or flight response. As Mike Tyson has said, "Everyone has plans, until they're hit in the mouth." When he was hit by Bruce, his plans went out the window. I thank Matthew for finally clearing the air.
foreveragainOK WJM was a baker who done martial arts hardly a skilled opponent yet Bruce did not soundly win in fact he may have lost considering he refused a public fight to settle it
This account has also been confirmed by another writer, incidentally also a journalist, in this article at Fightland: m.fightland.vice.com/blog/bruce-lee-vs-wong-jack-man-fact-fiction-and-the-birth-of-the-dragon "Despite standing that night with those opposed to Bruce Lee, David Chin is crystal clear on what he regards as the big picture: “The things Bruce was saying back then were true. I disagreed with him at the time, but he was right.”"
Birth of the Dragon brought me here. That stinkin' movie gave me a bad case of the WTF's (total garbage)... I went back and forth on Linda's story (the book and "Dragon") but I'm glad I found this comment. I will have to read this book now. It seems to be the most logical and from an unbiased pov.
The other guy challenged bruce for a rematch. The first match was stopped because Bruce couldn't controle his temper. Bruce didn,t except the rematch. Creating another myth. The truth was it was suppose to be a clean fight and Bruce went grazy. He chickened out of the rematch and told a fake story about the fight. Just like his fake worldrecords.
@Quantumax46 the HK media and public hate Jackie his reputation.. on the positive he's turned martial arts into comedy which is creative. But he's nowhere close to real fighters. Bruce Lee only noticed him over an accident.. whereas Bruce deliberately sought Sammo Hung, Chan's senior, for his movies. And don't even get started on what a pervert Jackie Chan is. So many movies where there's a young talentless female in JC's films.. Guess why.
@@Hazard76 You've missed my point on how JC picks those young girls, the non-famous ones. His bastard child was one of his many infidelities. Jackie is a great comedian, a good actor, and a mediocre martial artist, in that order.
Hello Jackie Chan, thank you for your story! Treasure it, and Mr. Lee was my hero! I loved him, I'm also a fan of yours. Please, keep up the great work!! Be safe, always.. Take care, "God Bless", sincerely -
Jackie Chan is one of the best for me, it doesnt matter who can beat who in a fight. Jackie Chan has something more than fighting skills. He has honor, character and the will to push through the things most would not. His stunts for me will be something most martial artists could never touch. Bruce will always be a legend but no more than the those legends who surrounded him.
Jackie performed those stunts which were risky for life. Bruce Lee didn't performed such stunts. So I think him (Jackie) as more courageous than bruce.
Growing up as a kid I used to watch Bruce Lee films over and over again practised his moves from all his films from his first film big boss to enter the dragon, never had any fights because I was too scared when it really came to it this one time I got brave this older kid whacked me at juniors school I threw a punch with a bruce Lee stance after and hit him in the throat by accident the teachers told.me off and called both our parents in I was made out to be the bully and they asked where did you learn to fight like that I said Bruce Lee films that day my dad beat me with a stick at the time it killed I remember crying for an hour. Thanks Bruce you got me beaten with a stick!! 😂😂😂
You know it just hit me. Enter the Dragon had Bruce, Bollo, Sammo, Jackie. Thats pretty bad ass. I already knew this but it just hit me how cool it is that all of them were in it.
Yeah, if Bruce had lived, maybe they would've been the first Expendables. They could've brought in Dan Inosanto, Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Bob Wall and of course Mr Williams and Roper (if he wasn't busy with the girls).
foreveragainOK Bolo was supposed to be in part 2. I dont know what happened but his name was attatched to it on imdb back in the day. I would love to see Bolo vs Stallone.
Sifu Wong Jack Man lived until Dec 2018 after the screening of "Birth of the Dragon" was cut. Regardless of who won the match, if both of the sifus came out alive, it's a draw, no one died. Wong Jack Man said Bruce Lee is good, and he respected him.
please turn down the backing music and preferably don't play 2 different songs in completely different keys at the same time. it's confusing and makes it really hard to concentrate on what they are saying
Bruce Lee was such an amazing guy, exceptional human being, he looked so effing cool in those movies, he just had this unique look. I loved his body shape, that slim, sleek figure with those impressive lats of his, and his hair in Enter the Dragon and Game of Death are is best ever look i think. Its great to see Jackie talk about his friend and to see the admiration he had for him. If he had lived longer theres no doubt they would have made some great movies together. I just love Bruce Lee practically as much as i love my own family, my own brothers and its weird cause i never even met him, he died a while before i was even born. He was a truly great man, he was spiritual, he had no ego, and to do what he did, sharing martial arts with the western world was a truly great and compassionate thing he did. Especially at a time when there was much racism, he helped bring western and Asian people together.
Jackie Chan is so funny the way he faked his injury to have Bruce comfort him! Most people may done the same , ha ha! Linda Lee, Bruce is wife was there when Jack Man Wong and lee battled! For those of you who do not believe that Bruce Lee won, take the arguments up with Linda Lee. You will lose , cause Lee had speed beyond speed!!
James Lee, Bruce's friend and instructor in Bruce's Oakland school: when they got home that night, James' son recalls "Uncle Bruce and Dad were happy, and Dad said Uncle Bruce had won the fight." Very doubtful the son made this story up, or that his dad would lie to him. Further, Linda Lee was the other witness. It was basically WJM running around, and Bruce was not in the best of condition, and he was embarrassed at his conditioning. From then on, he began to train really hard for years, eight hours a day sometimes. Joe Lewis said at times they would train from the morning to 11 at night.
rbeck3200tb40: I just finished Polly's book. He writes that the first time Jackie and Bruce went bowling is that Bruce met Jackie on the street, never having socialized before that. He said, Where are you going? "Bowling." "Can I go with you?" Jackie: Wow! All the people were going 'Bruce Lee! Bruce Lee!' Jackie was a very good bowler and was disappointed when Bruce had to leave.
He beat Wong jack man but it took him 30 minutes to do so and that's when he started to look at the forms of martial arts and realized they are not practical. He said he should of beat him way sooner. In martial arts the forms are always the same and perfect and in a fight they are almost useless.
It doesn't matter whethr he borrowed from ancient Chinese philosphy or made it by himself - truth is that this saying is great. And Bruce had all the rigth to say it, as he was Chinese and part of that heritage, and he lived these words himself.
I've read Polly's book. He reports that Linda has 1/ a top reputation for integrity 2/ she is quiet and unassuming. He has a good explanation for the mix-up of the WJM mess. She writes that the challenge letter included 'no teach other races' clause. However, the letter was in Chinese, which she didn't read. More likely is that when she asked what was the reason for the fight, Bruce said, "Well, sweetheart, it's because they don't want me teaching white people." If you read Polly's book, it makes more sense. At the time, white people were already students of kung fu. Jesse Glover in Seattle said that he couldn't find a kung fu instructor willing to teach him (he's black); he became Bruce's first student.
Mr Jackie Chan thank you for showing us this i never knew that was you in enter the dragon your a great actor miss Linda thank you for sharing this Story i loved it so much bruce lee forever if mr Bruce Lee was still alive theres no telling what else he could have came up with thank all of you im a forever fan of mr Bruce Lee and Mr Jackie Chan thank you
My how things can turned around . Yea linda said the fight between them was 5 minutes or something like that . Another spectator said it last like 25 minutes and neither one wanted to land that fatal blow . I’m chalking it up as a stalemate
@@lacampbellmd1 My money is on Linda than some anonymous “random spectator”. Knowing the Chinese community mindset. They would have demanded a rematch rather than giving in to Bruce Lee teaching non Chinese students.
awesome video..but the music at the end is making me lose my mind. it sounds like there is two songs playing at once. sounds like dissonance to me. kind of driving me crazy.
I just watch Ip Man 4 like 7-8 times cause i freak'n love Wing Chun and as Danny Chan playing as Bruce Lee was hella badass and very impressive too can't stop watching Ip Man 4 it too amazing.
This "interview" is sliced and respliced in an extremely misleading way to make it appear that Bruce immediately defeated Jack Man. The real and much earlier account, if you research it, is that it took Bruce *a very long time* to defeat him. In fact, it was so difficult that it cause Bruce to develop his own fighting school, because he realized his current one was not effective. Highly highly misleading presentation here.
The idea that Bruce Lee was the first to begin teaching kung fu to non-Chinese is not correct. Grandmaster Wong Ark-yuey began teaching non-Chinese in the mid-to late 1950s in Los Angeles. His original studio was on Ord Street in Chinatown. Sifu Wong was threatened by some in the Chinese community for teaching kung fu but totally disregarded them. He would always say, "I'm not going to live forever so I want to pass on what I know to students who want to learn." As long as the student was willing to learn he would teach him/her. Sifu Wong knew Bruce and Linda Lee. In fact, he had a photo of the family in his studio. He would always smile when he talked of the children.
Hey, fascinating stuff there. I checked him out. ua-cam.com/video/DabUrxmZnq4/v-deo.html A fascinating fellow who knew his own mind and did what he thought was moral even if it went against the crowd. One of a kind and certainly the one, as you say, who first introduced kung fu to non-Chinese. Thanks
After the fight Wong Jack Man continued his style until his death . But Bruce completely changed his style. That makes lot of sense about who won that fight . If Bruce had won so easily like his wife said Why the fuck did he change his style?? And Wong Jack Man invited him to a rematch but Bruce refused that too makes lot of sense .. You can't trust Lee's wife in this case because can someone really believe she will say something to harm her husband's reputation ?? It's either draw or a win for Wong Jack Man in that fight..
I love it when you get the facts. Thete was so many versions of the story of the fight with Jack . I heard that the fight went on for 47 minutes. Here Bruce Lee's wife states it completely different.
I wish more people would have fought Bruce Lee..just to wing chun slap some peoples minds today..everyone has said hes fast...he makes quick' look like its a word that describes mud..he makes fast seem ridiculously handicapped.i would like to have fought Bruce Lee..i would of been so popular...even dead popular!!!! BRUCE LEE WORLDS FINEST
I’m 50 Bruce is a one and only no matter what the debate is. Absolutely a HERO in my book. So it is with the utmost respect that I question his wife’s account about this fight. It is clear he changed his style after the fight but why would he if he was so victorious so fast in the match? That just doesn’t make sense to me.

When he read the letter, he said OK."
3. As Dan Inosanto has also said, "To Bruce, a fight was a great experience." "Bruce would fight or spar anyone."
But Der said the mood in Chinatown was quiet: "I then knew that Bruce had won."
I thank Matthew for finally clearing the air.
foreveragainOK WJM was a baker who done martial arts hardly a skilled opponent yet Bruce did not soundly win in fact he may have lost considering he refused a public fight to settle it
This account has also been confirmed by another writer, incidentally also a journalist, in this article at Fightland:
m.fightland.vice.com/blog/bruce-lee-vs-wong-jack-man-fact-fiction-and-the-birth-of-the-dragon
"Despite standing that night with those opposed to Bruce Lee, David Chin is crystal clear on what he regards as the big picture: “The things Bruce was saying back then were true.
@@bertt1055 What did Bruce say was right to David Chin?
The other guy challenged bruce for a rematch. The first match was stopped because Bruce couldn't controle his temper. Bruce didn,t except the rematch. Creating another myth. The truth was it was suppose to be a clean fight and Bruce went grazy. He chickened out of the rematch and told a fake story about the fight. Just like his fake worldrecords.
Jackie Chan cracks me up. RIP Bruce Lee.
Jackie Chan is by far one of the best men in Hollywood or this planet in that fact
Not so fast, not so fast lol
Travis Marinello Honestly, Jackie Chan is an arrogant jerk who treated people on his films and animated show very poorly.
Guess why.
@@joseki6644 do attract the attention of audiences why do you think. And everyone knows that his fighting doesn't work its just for show and the looks
@@Hazard76 You've missed my point on how JC picks those young girls, the non-famous ones. His bastard child was one of his many infidelities. Jackie is a great comedian, a good actor, and a mediocre martial artist, in that order.
Bruce Lee was is and always will be the man
I have heard this story a few times from Jackie Chan on UA-cam and it always makes me smile. Dragons Forever!
Bruce Lee a true human being
Jackie is a living Legend 🥋Cool guy 😁
Bruce Lee is No 1 fighter in the world 🌏
My superhuman hero master Bruce Lee 🙏❤
The Lee's are right, all of us (humankind) are a huge family, but sadly, many don't understand it.
Bruce Lee was a good man he loved all race .The best number one kungfu fighter in the world
Hello Jackie Chan, thank you for your story!
Dan Vercruysse
Jackie performed those stunts which were risky for life. Bruce Lee didn't performed such stunts. So I think him (Jackie) as more courageous than bruce.
@@Nevergiveup-jt1tb not! Jackie Chan just wanted to do something different.
Bruce Lee 💜💜💜💞💞💞💖💖💖👍👍👍
Bruce lee was the best fighter still is today
Bruce Lee would've killed anyone, and there is still nobody as good. Nobody! Bruce was the man!
Jackie Chan such a great guy awesome actor awesome stuntman all around definitely deserves the title that he's got a Bruce Lee successor
I like Bruce Lee but don't over idolize him, he was amazing and wise but you can't say he had no ego lol
jackie is really lucky because strike to the temple can be fatal.
Jackie said that he was friends with Bruce and they would go bowling together all the time in China
Not all the time, that was that one time & the last he saw bruce, so that'll be in the 70s as he died later & yes, he was devastated knowing that.
WTF was that stuff. There was how many songs playing at the same time in the background ?
My heros Bruce and Jacky chan
Bruce lee lives forever 🙂🙏
Wow that is very deep under heaven we all one families. That ius Bruce Lee..
It doesn't matter whethr he borrowed from ancient Chinese philosphy or made it by himself - truth is that this saying is great. And Bruce had all the rigth to say it, as he was Chinese and part of that heritage, and he lived these words himself.

Bruce Lee is the Master and Only Master....
Always a treat to see Linda. in anything.
Linda is still beautiful. 😍
TheMagnificentPower she's a liar
Bob wall I kicked bruce lee's ass ... What is she lying about?
Read Bob Wall's later interviews and he changed his tune like Joe Lewis, who said "Bruce was the toughest, fastest guy I ever met."
Insane crazy shocking Bruce lee No she ain't, her story never changed, nor did she studdered, you idiot.
Mr Jackie Chan thank you for showing us this i never knew that was you in enter the dragon your a great actor miss Linda thank you for sharing this Story i loved it so much bruce lee forever if mr Bruce Lee was still alive theres no telling what else he could have came up with thank all of you im a forever fan of mr Bruce Lee and Mr Jackie Chan thank you
Bruce definitely won the match.Had Bruce lost to Wong, he would not be able to continue teaching his students.
“Under the heaven we are all one family”
God the Father and we his Sons and Daughters.
awesome video..but the music at the end is making me lose my mind. it sounds like there is two songs playing at once. sounds like dissonance to me. kind of driving me crazy.
Rest in heaven Master Lee. Wish I could have learned from you n your son much respect always
That stupid, bloody music over the last part of the video - the most important part of the video.
Turn it down!!
I just watch Ip Man 4 like 7-8 times cause i freak'n love Wing Chun and as Danny Chan playing as Bruce Lee was hella badass and very impressive too can't stop watching Ip Man 4 it too amazing.
THANK U ( JACKIE - CHAN ) .....NICE , MEMORIES 🙏🏾☯️🙏🏾❤️.....
Yes Bruce was the best but Jackie was also great.
Whoever did the mix on this truly has Adhd!
Thank u for that clarity...and straight talk about the real story, thank u ,
Good video but stupid music that wasn't mixed properly with the visuals
🤣🤣😂
This "interview" is sliced and respliced in an extremely misleading way to make it appear that Bruce immediately defeated Jack Man. The real and much earlier account, if you research it, is that it took Bruce *a very long time* to defeat him. In fact, it was so difficult that it cause Bruce to develop his own fighting school, because he realized his current one was not effective. Highly highly misleading presentation here.
Bruce Lee - The Nobel Badass
Very good video, thank you!, but the background music is too loud ...
I love Bruce lee
At 0:37 you can really see the focus and intensity on bruce's face and in those mesmerizing dark eyes.
Thank you for muddling the story of Bruce Lee’s greatest victory with shitty audio...
Both of you are correct.
Lol true dat..
@@rogerhaney7829 both? im sure there were like 6 audio tracks playing there
@@paipai7460 : "Both" was referring to the first two commenters before me. I was agreeing with them.
Chan was the dude who got hit while Bruce was making a noise that sounds like "what was that?!"
Thanks for sharing that Jackie. I have even more respect for you all due to a hug. Thanks!
The One True Master. One and Only
R.I.P. Bruce Lee ~
I checked him out.
ua-cam.com/video/DabUrxmZnq4/v-deo.html
A fascinating fellow who knew his own mind and did what he thought was moral even if it went against the crowd. One of a kind and certainly the one, as you say, who first introduced kung fu to non-Chinese.
Thanks
Bruce lee the best
Jackie Chan:
Enter the dragon,"Under the dragon.''
Suddenly," Certainly!"
Thank you Sifu Bruce. Because of you I am a martial artist 😳🙏
I'm sure because of BL's influence, a lot of people's lives have been saved because they took the trouble to learn.
Even Jackie Chan gets star struck for his senpai. Respect.
Sifu lee 🔥🔥🔥👊 one love.
BRUCE LEE IN MY MIND!!! 😎
A Brief Bromance with Lee.
try to turn up the volume of the music next time, i can`t hear it high enough.
My super hero jackiechan sir
I just wanted Bruce to hold me longer lmfao...Jackie
I love it when you get the facts. Thete was so many versions of the story of the fight with Jack . I heard that the fight went on for 47 minutes. Here Bruce Lee's wife states it completely different.
Scott Martain...maybe but then why lie about the challenge?
Well played Jackie, well played
The real Master the goat!
Wtf turned up the music wen Bruce Lee's Widow was talking??
The music in the background mixed with the other music...
I dont have a story but, I Love this story... 👍😂
Bruce! wow! Love it!
Fun fact:JC is Bruce Lee extra and stunt man before.
The Netflix series of Bruce Lee, did the only real fight between the 2 of them, its a good series
Jackie’s Richard Mille absorbed all the pain
I wish more people would have fought Bruce Lee..just to wing chun slap some peoples minds today..everyone has said hes fast...he makes quick' look like its a word that describes mud..he makes fast seem ridiculously handicapped.i would like to have fought Bruce Lee..i would of been so popular...even dead popular!!!! BRUCE LEE WORLDS FINEST
Couldn’t have been said any better
Crazy story he was there that's so cool and he made it also amazing two legends
Everybody love Bruce Lee
Yeah, even in Bosnia, when both enemies wanted a statue, both sides picked Bruce Lee as a symbol of peace.
What's with too many music being played, I couldn't hear Linda Lee talk.
