  • A look at a new CIGS (Copper Indium Gallium Selenide) 360-degree flexible thin-filmed solar panel from BougeRV. The panel features new technology that allows it to be rolled up! Being super thin and lightweight makes it perfect for mounting on curved surfaces found on many RVs and boats.

    In this video, I mount it on my boat's flybridge bimini top and run the solar wires down to a 40A BougeRV solar controller and into some lithium batteries. I then measure the Yuma panel's power output using a short circuit test and a real-world test. It was August 14th, with reasonably clear skies at around 50 degrees latitude. The short circuit test yielded approximately 10 amps.
    Power to the batteries from the boat bimini mounted setup was in the neighborhood of 130 watts. It was comparable to my existing 200W rigid glass panel setup. Overall I'm pleased with the product and its unique features. I'll continue using it and come back in the future with a longer-term review.

    It’ll be interesting to learn more about heat and if it could be mounted directly on an RV roof or your Bimini without the blanket insulator.

      It is sunny and mid-afternoon so I took some temp readings with an IR gun. Measurements varied between 95-100F. People do mount other thin panels directly on their bimini. They usually use magnets, velcro or zippers. Doesn't seem to be a problem. But the sun up here is likely a little less intense than, say southern California or Florida in the summer. :) So mileage may vary.

      This BougeRV company seems to list high and then always has sales going on, often with deep discounts.

      Are you referring to this new CIGS panel technology or thin flexible panels in general? Because from what I understand the CIGS are more durable and create less heat than the traditional flexible sold in the past.

      @@LoveYourRV awesome, I am just referring to the thin ones in general. I am looking to put a solar system in my RV but am wondering what all I need? I don’t want to go cheap but not super high end. Can you recommend a video that shows what all is needed? I want to be able to run my AC off grid.

      @@bounderchris If you want to run AC off-grid, it can be expensive compared to a gas generator. ACs draw about 15 amps on pretty consistent bases when hot out. You need lots of solar panel wattage to recoup the power and a large bank of batteries to store the power for when the sun is gone, plus a high wattage inverter in the 3000W range to power the AC start up current. Here is a pretty good video on the subject www.gonewiththewynns.com/off-grid-solar-rv-air-conditioning A little old but gives you the idea what you need. Cheers, Ray

      @@LoveYourRV thanks Ray! Mine is pulling about 10 amps and I would just need it to run about 5 hours a day during the day. I’ll check it out though!

      You're welcome. :) 10 amps at 120V AC = about 100 amps at 12VDC 1200 watts so you can see its a pretty large load DC wise. Add in some other stuff running in the RV and its likely up around 1500W. Very doable with todays panels, lithium batteries and a good inverter, but can get pricey once you add all the stuff including large wiring, fuses, breakers, etc. I've heard some people will go the mini-split AC route to lower the wattage required.

      Me too. I'd still go with rigid glass over them unless the use case is one that rigid is not possible or difficult/expensive to install. This one seems better than flexible I've tried in the past. Time will tell though.

      Issues of getting brittle with age?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  11 місяців тому +1

      @@stuartstuart866 From what I gather, they don't crack and haze like the previous type of flex panels, but time will tell. They haven't been out for regular consumers very long. I hear they were used by the military in the past.

    Way to expensive........

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  8 місяців тому

      Yes not cheap compared to the older style flexible thin panels but hopefully this newer technology panel will last much longer than them. I image the price will drop as more competing CIGS panels crop up. Here is a link to my longer-term review ua-cam.com/video/sAE4Uy-g_30/v-deo.html Cheers, Ray
