  • Cory came to one of our shoots but be didn't have time to do a full review of his Celica. I didn't want him to go home with nothing. We took a drive down the highway and back in his Celica GT Tsunami Edition. Cory has a nice collection back where he lives. Cory and his toys will return in future videos.

    Let's not kid ourselves. It's not like you were between the Celica and the Supra and chose this because it's a better daily. You bought the Celica because it's all you could afford.

      That's absolutely right. 6th gen Celica for my first car, second one will be a Supra. But the FWD is waaayyy better for me, since I live in Finland and there's snow about half of the year.

      Except that isnt the point of Celica's since Supra got split off as separate model and not a trim in the early 80s. It was there up to that point. Celica's crown jewel instead of Supra is GT-Four which has something supra never had and never will true 4WD. GT-Fours are incredibly easily tuneable without new parts aside of ECU to 300bhp territory which is what rally versions had. They are cheaper to get and far more practical grippy and fun than Supras, You will also have curvy shapes and pop ups with ST185. And you can fit people in the rear seats unlike Supra and to daily it too, and to have loads of fun on snow and tons of grip and amazing handling and giant trunk. If you can afford to get ST185 or ST205 then go for it, in US it was called All-trac instead of GT-Four.

    He has some facts wrong about the GT-S
    The weight of a GT is 2425 while a GT-S weighs 2500 (manuals) also a GT-S only has 180 hp with 130 lbs of torque. Notable differences between the two models is a GT-S as a Yamaha tuned motor with a higher red line which is up at 8300rpm versus 6800 on a GT. The GT-S makes peak power at 7800rpm and torque at 6800rpm also it has a 6 speed manual or a 4 speed triptonic (please don't drive one they're super slow with the 4 speed). Other differences are the GT-S has slightly larger front brakes in the 2000 year (the GT became the same size after 2000) also GT will only have drum rear brakes while the GT-S has 2ply solid rear disk brakes. Tach goes to 9k rpm and 160mph on the cluster and usually came with the 16" wheel option (upgrade was only about 70 dollars from 15" to 16"). All in all a GT-S drives completely different because of the lack of low end torque you have to rev out the motor.

      The SS-II makes 190 HP though, it's pretty easy to confuse. At least I'm pretty sure that's the case.

    • @sr36511
      @sr36511 9 років тому +1

      ßIGpoppaKEGdog™ Yup, that's right. It has one of the Yamaha-made 2zz's, but unfortunately they only produce 130 lb-ft of torque, so they aren't quite as punchy as you'd expect.

    • @magicstik213
      @magicstik213 9 років тому +1

      ßIGpoppaKEGdog™ Yeah in the states the Celica got the worst, de-tuned motor, manual only HVAC, non-folding mirrors, and no stability control. Europe and Japan had much better options such as the SS-II had the option of "Super Strut" suspension which is wishbone up front rather than Macpherson struts, optional 1.5 way helical differential and Europe had the option of 17" wheels as well along with additional redesigned exteriors

    I had one of these. 2004 Celica GT. It was the first car I ever owned with a stick shift, and the second car I ever owned. It was my introduction into the world of cars and car culture, and I loved that thing. I was 18 when I got it, and kept it spotless for about six months. Then, as any stupid kid does, I modified it. Nothing irreversible, just a rear wing and headlights and taillights. It was dumb looking in retrospect, but that reversable offence was forgivable. What wasn't was what I did this June.
    I drove my buddies up to a campground up a gravelly logging road, and by this point I was obsessed with the earlier GT4 and Alltrac Celicas. And after driving that road once, I went back, only this time I drove fast. And like any idiot who thinks he's a racing car driver with no experience, I crashed it. Entire front radiator assembly was ruined, and I had to limp the car back to my home a few kilometers away. I was only obsessed with more horsepower and faster corners and race parts galore. I just couldn't be satisfied with what I have.
    Now I have a 2006 Corolla XRS. 2ZZ-GE powered, 170 horsepower, VVTL-I and all that. Now I have the better engine and 6 speed transmission and all disc brakes, but this time I know how to love what I have.
    My lesson to you all, and my plea, is if you do modify such a fun and lovable car like a Celica, or a Corolla, or even a Miata or Civic, make sure it is a reversable modification. Intakes are fine, wheels are fine, spoilers are fine, just make sure someone in the future can enjoy that car the way it was built if they wish. And Never, EVER ruin such a wonderful creation just because of a stupid impulse. It may be just a lost toy to you, but to the world it's one fewer machine that could have been enjoyed and loved for many years more by someone else. And if you do crash one, try your best to get it repaired. It's okay to want more horsepower and a faster car, but don't ruin your current one to do that. The world needs more fun cars, and anyone who ruins fun affordable cars like this deserves a detuned Crossover SUV with sixteen pillars and no visibility for the rest of their life, me included.

    I completely forgot about the whole thing. It’s so much warmer in NYC winters these days

  • @keyboarddancers7751

    In the UK the GT is called a VVTi. It also has discs all round (I've put the larger Avensis disc/caliper set up on the front of mine, an 03) and six gears (not five which I believe was standard in the US). 125 mph max. Very cheap to buy and maintain, quite pretty, reasonably fun to play with on twisty roads although you have to work it hard (above 5k) to access whatever modest power it does possess however weekly oil level checks are ESSENTIAL if you're revving it regularly. It'll not rust away for a good while yet and it's very reliable. Drop the back seats and it's surprisingly accommodating (mountain bike with front wheel off plus camping gear). Perhaps just a bit tedious on the motorway/highway and the seats are not generously padded but there's lots of room; I'm 6'2" and I have to bring the seat forward a little. With winter tyres, you can even feel confident in the snow. Overall a good basic sporty little machine which won't empty your wallet.

    Great review, and the speedometer being set up with 60 so far over does provide for some accidental speeding if you don't pay attention. I drive a Tsunami GT as my daily and it is excellent for that task, and the mpg is great, especially considering it is ten years old now. Many people dislike this car and I see why, so many people riced them out and acted like they were fast.... Sure the GTS had the "lift" at the top end, but still.. What the celica lacks in straight line speed in makes up for in grip in the bends, it is such a fun car to drive while still remaining functional. And at least its not a prius....

    Tsunami looks so clean! I have a seventh gen gts and I can acclaim that this is a great car. Not the best performer, but once you get over the looks being ahead of performance, its a great car to toss around corners and just a joy to rev the motor to 8,000 rpms. It's Fwd and it shows it at the limit, but the limit is pretty high in itself. Celica feels like it wants to dart around everywhere. Once you lower it, it turns it into a gokart.

    I had a GT-S. Not for long, but it was ridiculously fun. It couldn't do more than about 140, but for city driving, it was a blast, especially on highway on-ramps. Stock, it could chirp tires from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to 4th. And an 8K redline. Oh, and lift. Lift was fun.

Even though it not super fast it still beats a few competitors out there, very fun to drive over and over again, and looks sexy if you know what to do with it. Overall, im grateful this car exist and i would consider this car my Lambo or any other exotic sports car out there

    I own a 2001 Celica (European standard version (143 hp). Only modification I did was adding the official spoiler (just looks better with it). It's my first car and I'll be keeping it for a while. It's sporty enough, the engine noise when you push it a bit is great and the mileage is more than decent.
    When I drove through Germany last summer, my top speed was 215km/h (134mp/h). I think I could have gone a bit faster, but not much. It might make 140, but then you're really pushing it (too far).

    1ZZ engine, same as the MR2 Spyder. Said MR2 would benefit greatly from the 2ZZ engine found in the only front-drive Celica that should have been offered, the GT-S. You've probably mentioned this in the video, but I wanted to get it out of the way before I forgot. Rather than see a RWD Celica, I'd prefer a return of the All-Trac GT-Four. Fun fact: The Lotus Elise uses the 2ZZ Toyota engine. In my opinion it's a better motor than Honda's K-series.

      They're good motors but they cost significantly more to get more power out it than a K series motor which usually makes the K series motors more popular.
      Fun fact a 2zz hooks up to E153 which is the SW20 MR-2 Transmission (3SGTE) and a ST205 GT-Four also uses a 3SGTE so you could TECHNICALLY hook up a 2zz to an AWD powertrain from a ST205 or even a ST185

    to help putting the first gear while moving you need a stabilizer you can make one whit the stock left trunk strut connected from the front bar were the bumber is bolted on to to the right side of the engine from behind use the bolt of the valve cover some bending and cutting is needed this only works for the 1zz celica

    the reason the celica was so great was because it was a car that could fit a vast array of people, and still satisfy spirited driving habits. I daily a 1992 GT 5 speed with just shy of 110k and it's an absolutely brilliant car. Say one day i could afford a supra, i wouldn't ditch the celica just because in terms of a daily driver its about as practical as you can get for a two door from toyota, ever. although i will say the last absolutely class dominator celica toyota made was the 6th gen.

    I had and loved a 2002 Celica GT and can say with certainty that it will do 140mph with enough space. Actually the US spec GT had a higher top speed than the GTS as the long 6th gear would drop the GTS out of the powerband. The eurospec 6speed had a shorter 6th gear and was the fastest transmission for the car in either trim.
    Love the show!

    • @wolfsquared
      @wolfsquared 6 років тому +2

      owned my 2003 gts 6speed since new. very fun car to drive. it has 160hp til you hit 6000 rpm, then it gains 20hp from a large injector opening up and dumping extra fuel. so 6000rpm-8300rpm you have 180hp and feels like a turbo kicked in. easily does 135 in 5th gear without any trouble and very quickly. but to get the car past that needs a turbo or something. because when you shift from the 135mph 5th gear redline to 6th gear the rpms drop below 6000 and you lose the extra 20hp. 6th can maintain 130-135 but cant accelerate past it. i was only able to get mine to 140 on a steep downgrade. driving to vegas i will set cruise at about 120. feels and handles like your only doing 65, very stable and solid.

    Awww I love my celica but I have thought many times over strategies to split the unit body and make it rwd lol... I think I could do it with an IRS (subframe, inboard brakes, etc) from a late 70's jaguar xjs (of course I would scrap the 1zz in favor for something like a SBC lol)... add a cage, wide body the fenders, make jessica alba fall madly in love with me, win the lottery... you get the idea.
