  • Welcome to my most recent cameo layout build, inspired by the 'old sheds' at Boston Lodge on the Ffestiniog Railway. The concept was originally discussed on the blog in early October, here: paxton-road.bl...
The layout is built in 009 (1:76 scale - the same as OO gauge, but with 9mm track rather than 16.5mm, so representing narrow gauge), and features scratch built structures to evoke the scene depicted. In this video I share my reasons for evolving the composition and some of the design and construction secrets that might help your own project.
This layout is a commission, if you'd like to explore a custom build then get in touch using the contact form on my website, the email form on Facebook or the messaging services on the various forum.
If you have any questions please do leave them as comments and I'll do my best to answer you all.
    Thanks for watching!

@@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways I enjoy the thought you put into your modeling and your videos (and the detailed walk through). You have me contemplating building a micro layout/diorama (of a US railroad). Maybe something inspired by this: www.loc.gov/item/2019690100/

Pioneer Valley (and Pinsly in general) would make a great layout build! Good luck

My grandson (11) has just enjoyed watching this as he's planning a 009 layout at the moment. Maybe when he makes a start he'll show his progress on his Dylington Model Railway channel, just going to watch the fiddle yard video now. Cheers James 🙂👍

Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it - I worried it had grown too long, but couldn’t leave anything out either!

Stunning - model railway art at a whole new level. So helpful to see how wired, as well. Thanks for sharing

Tom thank you, I’m glad you found the pack of audio and visual clutter relaxing, and too, that the message was inspiring - I hope, energising too, and that it’s a fuel you can come back to and use in your own work.

Great to see what can be achieved in such a small space

    Enjoying this now.
I like how you’ve chosen that view “out” as you’re noting around 8:50. Not just for the immediate view but also the way the backscene is the invitation of where we go on the train when we leave here.

Another great looking Cameo - also just reading the ‘Pont-y-Dulais’ article in Railway Modeller (December 2023), so congratulations on that as well. Am working on a design or two myself, but my fear is (as I often do,) that I'm trying to pack too much into such a small space.

Steve, strip things back - what’s the story you’re telling, distill that, focus on that. Then ask yourself if the element you’re considering adds or subtracts from that story… or buy my second book!

Lovely bit of work, and I really like the philosophy behind it. Some ideas I'll be looking at for my model inspired by Tryfan Junction. Thanks for sharing not just the model, but the ideas behind it.
It;s a spot I know well, and was last walking (and photographing) over at the Bygones Weekend a few weeks ago.

Thank you, I think the key to small layout success is not compressing a prototype fit your space but finding one that suits what you have available. Distilling your story and choreographing that into a cameo is discussed in more detail in my two books, if you haven't seen them.

Great stuff, its very interesting to hear you explain the ‘why’ behind the decisions, I think a key take away for me is not to overcrowd a small layout.
It’s tempting to try to cram a lot in, but better to do less stuff but do it well
I completely agree with the neatness point too, try to be neat and don’t rush your hobby time

    • @JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways
      @JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways  9 місяців тому +1

I think it’s not about ‘not cramming stuff in’ - rather it’s about consciously interpreting a scene and deciding on every elements role in telling the story. This is the subject of my second book really, ‘The Art of Railway Modelling’. Thanks for watching.

@@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways yeah I see what you mean, I am very tempted by cameo layouts in N for the space saved as much as anything but I was also very interested in what you said about working in smaller scales, so I nay improve my 00/009 by working in N I will keep an eye out for the books 👍
