Howling Sou'wester - GP9RM switching Beaverbrook - HO Scale Shelf Layout
The Halifax South Western GP9RM is known by local railfans as the 'Howling Sou'wester' for the wonderful tone of its Nathan K3L horn. Seen here switching the local on Beaverbrook, my HO scale shelf layout.
The GP9RM is built from an old resin Kaslo Shops kit on an even older Proto2000 GP20 chassis (hence the different fuel and air tanks).
The Halifax South Western is part of my proto-freelance 'TerraTransport' system, which is described on the blog:

For the love of model railways - creating a miniature Class 97
Переглядів 79121 годину тому
I love model railways. They tell out stories, share our emotions and connect us with one another in a way that feels comfortable, gentle and easy. This model was created because of the experience of seeing the real locomotive working hard on Talerddig bank. Of my hand, small in size but big in heart - isn't this the greatest hobby in the world?

Join me on Paxton Road, my Hi-fi micro N gauge layout. Just 55cm long with no turnouts it continues to delight in simple, mindful operation. In today's video we run through a series of Speedlink trip workings using Graham Farish 08 and Dapol 26 and a variety of kit and re-worked ready to run rolling stock depicting Scottish speedlink railfreight traffic in the late 1980s. There was something in the air this morning, I'm not quite sure why but it felt important to go and watch the first timber train from Aberystwyth to Chirk today. Crisp, cold and wonderful light, the drive from the Dee Valley via Dolgellau and Dinas Mawddwy to experience the climb up from Machynlleth on Talerddig bank... Time allowed me to make the drive a loop, and come back via Newtown and Wel...

Silent Switching - Mindful quiet model railways after a busy day

This evening I wanted a few moments to unwind before heading back to real life - it hasn't exactly been taxing but it has been a busy day in the workshop. Join me as I tidy up and begin to run the model railway without any sound - and reflect on the joy that such an experience can bring - along with the headspace, very much needed. Join me for a short interlude at Paxton Road this Sunday, as 08791 drops off a Rudd wagon in the yard. Paxton Road is my N scale Micro-Hifi Cameo layout, just 50cm long. 08791 has been re-finished from a Farish model, with heart and passion for 1990s British Rail Speedlink. That Rudd? I love this ethos. It’s a huge hobby with many strands. It’s the stories and human connections that keep me coming back. Your very short video just now has really resonated with me on many levels. Thank you for sharing.

      This is what is missing in the popular media, be that socials, YT or magazine. Story telling. That’s what my books are about, that’s why I write every day, it’s what fuels all of my modelling. This ‘story telling’ is how a cold model is elevated into an emotional connection. You don’t need to like trains to understand my connection, and to appreciate the ‘art’ of recreating this when you watch this and ‘the chase’.

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell 22 години тому

      @ I agree completely. I don’t think of my layout as a “model railway” any longer. It’s a real town, with a history and inhabitants. Thinking of it this way ultimately makes the model better.

    Gees, you totally got me !! On You Tube, the former Terra Transport catch my eyes. They´re was never green loco in NF (at least, that flashy green). Cool i click, wanting to see a modeling train. Well a bit deceptive. I want a "toy", not a real one ! It took me a few seconds to realise that it´s a " toy train" !! I think it´s a good proof of your modeling and filming talent ! Don´t be offusqued by "Toy" train word. Just the best oppose to "real" . But a bad sign for your railroad. Never a good sign to see pull up track just after the crossing....😅😅😅

    Over the holidays, I placed an impulsive order for a Farish N scale Gronk and a few two-axle wagons (tanks, hoppers, brake van). It's somewhere in transit over the Atlantic from Rails of Sheffield. Completely unexpected and unplanned, and definitely the result of the article in your 'Art of...' book about the venerable Class 08. Now, you've posted this wonderful video which has eliminated any possibility of buyers remorse. I can't wait! Thank you, James!

    • @CNR5154
      @CNR5154 6 днів тому

      @JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways In fact, the order also includes a 10-pack of Dapol magnetic replacement couplers, so any NEM factory rapidos will be swapped out straight away. Not that knuckles are prototypical either, but I know that I don't have your skills -- or patience -- to form and fit N-scale DGs.

    Im not sure why this video got into my recommended but im glad it did. I want to learn about HO more. I have a HUGE O scale collection mostly Lionel/Atlas. I have no idea how to DCC stuff works i do have a DCC ho loco I bought once. it just sit on the self

    • @JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways

      DCC isn’t difficult, but it’s not cheap either! If you’re a collector it might not be for you, but if you can use HO to remain focused on a theme, and stick to that alone, a small shelf layout with 2-3 DCC sound locomotives could be a lot of fun.

    • @JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways
      @JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways 8 днів тому

      We will all use model railways in different ways. For me it isn't escaping, it's more 'finding myself' again. The connection or longing for the past is an artistic nuance that isn't exclusive to what we do, but it's interesting to reflect why we, as humans, do it... that said, their is a purity in this heartfelt emotion that I feel is missing in the hobby in general which is probably why I talk about it so much!
