Corolla hybrid gets 55 mpg, vs my old SUV that gets 18 mpg. Drive 50,000 miles per year, and with gas in Canada at $5 per gallon that's $4,500 per year for gas for the hybrid Corolla vs $13,900 per year for the truck, or a difference of $9,400/yr or $785 per month. The monthly payment on the Corolla is $500/mth over five years, so it more than pays for itself with just the gas saved alone, with almost $300 extra into my pocket each month. It's like a FREE CAR plus free $300/mth !!!
I've been driving full time for Lyft and Uber in a 2009 Forester, typically getting 20 to 23mpg, spending almost $400/month on gas. Now I have a hybrid Corolla getting 53mpg or more.
May I suggest the Prius with AWDe is a better choice for Canadians coping with snow? As a taller driver, I have to disagree vehemently with the suggestion that there is plenty of headroom in the new 'TNGA' Corolla. While visiting a Toyota dealer recently, I discovered the 2019 Yaris hatch has approximately 2-3 more inches of headroom than this Corolla. That real Toyota Yaris also had more headroom than the new RAV4!!! The letter T in TNGA definitely does not stand for Tall.
The RAV4 has very good headroom in the back for a person of slightly above average height (I'm 180cm). The front though, I struggle to get enough headroom when it's equipped with the moon roof. It honestly sucks that the front passenger seat can't be lowered (though that's common in most cars in this segment that aren't the top trim)

No. The way the transmission shifts gears when using the gasoline engine is to vary the speeds between the engine and the electric motor, so if it is running on the engine the electric motor will be spinning every now and then.
If you really step on it then the gas engine kicks in to drive the wheels and charge the battery, but sometimes the battery and gas engine power the wheels together. When coasting the wheels charge the battery, when gently accelerating it uses the electric motor. It switches between gas and electric depending on the immediate situation and how much power is needed.
In Australia our hybrid sedan is rated at 3.5L/100km. I brought one last week and have been getting lower than this over a 190km round trip to work. My best has been 3.1L/100km. I think the warmer weather in Australia might have something to do with these figures. The best car I have ever driven.
I had tried the new Corolla hatch when it first came out so I was not too surprised about the sedan lacking headroom. The shock came with the new RAV4 .
Supposedly the newest Prius is getting a software update for Android Auto. It's the hatchback version... basically. Now, if you want the "crossover" version, that's the Rav4.
@@Phrancis5 It's all about profits. If the base Corolla hybrid sells to Toyota's satisfaction perhaps you will see more packages and designs come to market.
I've always mounted my phone to my window as I work on the road. I wish all cars would simply toss in a display with WIDI (display syncing) so we can always use our phones; which are vastly superior to any car system. Then they just need to polish the interface with the car's existing OBD2 info. That being said, aftermarket Android head units are pretty cheap compared to what a dealer upgrade would cost for a tech package.
You can never get a manual trans with a hybrid because the Eletric motor has too much torque for a transmission and it’s better to just have a cvt because there is simply no need.
More versions have to be on the way. Don't forget that there has been a major disruption of Corolla supply lines within North America due to the recent conversion of the Cambridge, Ontario Corolla plant to RAV4 production.
Seeing that you can lease one of these for $179/mo USD, this might be my next car. I haven't been excited enough about any of the 2021 offerings to pay $400+/mo, so I might just go this route and save a bunch of $$ so I can upgrade to something premium/luxury in 2024.
Trunk is well configured but still smaller than the competition as is the back seat. The placement of the "iPod" tacked on screen is just awful. At least you get - hopefully - good reliability with a Toyota.
The Corolla hybrid is nice, but the dealer I visited told me that they are in high demand and are selling for $6,000 over MSRP. I think I'll wait 3 or 4 years for that 'demand' to drop so I can buy one at a sane price.
Not all dealers. I called all 16 dealerships in Michigan and found 3 that were selling exactly at MSRP and secured an allocation with a $500 deposit. My bone stock no frills package hybrid is coming off the port in California end of July. Literally call every Toyota dealership in your province/state and I guarantee you'll find one at MSRP.
IMO each is a completely different car. Each has incredibly large differences between base and limited models; given NO difference in performance or handling between trims. Drive them, test parallel parking them, accelerate onto a freeway, pay attention to visibility, test their voice control(Honda is vastly superior in tech,) test parking them. I can pretty much guarantee that one of them will be a CLEAR winner based on what you're looking for.
Corolla and Camry are better in their own category. Overall winner is Camry. But Camry does not offer heated steering wheel in all their lineup but Corolla does. Go figure...!
New car is the best corolla ever made? Never would have guess so. 200 IQ right there. I'm sure the exec though: Hey this year, let's make a shittier car than last years.
Mike A The hybrid corolla has the equivalent of ~120hp.... For freeway driving, There are many instances when you need to quickly decelerate (to avoid hitting a merging car) and then quickly accelerate ( to avoid getting rear ended). This common where “three” freeway lanes quickly merge into one lane. Sometimes, the “view” of oncoming cars is blocked (ie by a parked simi-truck) when merging; so you have a much shorter on ramp distance to get to freeway speed. In these cases atleast a 160hp car is needed. Am I the only one who experiences these freeway situations?
skinny small tires ruined it for me but 1000km on a tank in the city...impressive...can you recoup the premium paid for the hybrid through lower gas consumption...maybe over 10 years...good Uber car
I just got this car because I drive for Uber and Lyft full time and my Forester was about to be too old (must be 10 years or newer). This car will save me hundreds of dollars a month in fuel costs.
I dig the 15's on my hybrid. I drive 135 miles round trip to work. I calculated buying the gas Corolla which is approximiately $3K less than the hybrid, I would come out even after 36 months. After 3 years, I would be saving approximately $73 US on gas per month. I expect to drive this hybrid no less than 10 years so 7 years (84 months) at $73 US is somewhere in the vicinity of $6144 US in that 7 year range. Not too shabby for fuel savings.
I'd skip the hybrid (forgo the premium for the battery equipment and battery itself) and go for the SE trim. Punchy 2.0L engine with remarkable fuel economy and Toyota's 2 stage automatic transmission (physical 1st gear + CVT). With proper maintenance and care, it'll be driving 20 years down the road.
That would make sense by your logic since you would be replacing brakes and timing belt which will put you well over the running cost of the hybrid for the money over that time. You do you.
Your official rating is 52 mpg but it can easily be surpassed with sensible or semi-sensible driving. Car & Driver got a stunning 56 mpg in their 200 mile highway test at 75 mph. That means driving around 65 mph would put you well into the 60+ mpg range.
@@10tenman10 Very wow indeed. Car & Driver got an impressive 45 mpg with the regular Camry 4 cylinder when they tested the new model at 75. To me, Hybrid is the obvious choice for anyone buying a Toyota with an automatic transmission today.
Do you not realize that the background music is a hindrance to your review???? At the 2:10 mark you say "alright, lets go" and I was hoping if I could hear the engine start up or the electrics take over. Nope, queue up the noise, disguised as music, ugh! Not that you care, but that was the end of watching your review for me. Not a sub and also gave you a thumbs down!
So weird. Looks like an entry-level basic trim on the outside and then looks like fully loaded on the inside. Versions being sold in Europe are more coherent in this respect. And you forgot to mention the Yaris Hybrid that may not be imported everywhere though.
We don't get a real Toyota Yaris here anymore. Toyota has a side deal with Mazda to market the out of date Mazda 2 as a Yaris in North America. We had a car called the Prius c which was a clone of the Yaris Hybrid but that is gone now.
As a reviewer I'd be careful to mention acceleration without facts. I'd say the 10.7 second 0-60 is crawling, and is a second slower than the base gas engine! Even the 2.0 takes over 8 seconds which seems slow for the power to weight ratio. Where as MOST other Toyota hybrids are a second faster than their base gas models. This should be the goal if they want to change people's mind. However, most people recognize how nice the torque feels. IMO Toyota simply refuses to make a fast/sporty car. I believe they could easily do so with a launch/sport mode. Other than shocks the TRD option has just become a badge kit; with nicer monochrome access. I imagine insurance rates would be higher if they did. They already take a hit being among best sellers; making the used parts more desirable. The Lexus IS250 used to be an affordable V6 Corolla with all wheel drive. I had a 2006 and it was such a great car. Other than lack of rear seat leg room which we quickly out grew. ;)
The IS is a fine car but it has the unique ability to look large on the outside while being absolutely tiny on the inside. A manual IS was my daydream car until I realized I literally could not fit inside.
I actually test drove one of these, and it's not as nice as depicted in this video. It's noisy under hard acceleration, pretty slow and the CVT is as annoying as ever. The handling has greatly improved, however. And no Android Auto still.
I know I have Nissan Murano Sl and the reason I got that over Infiniti QX-50 same price was Nissan has CarPlay and Infiniti don’t offer CarPlay. Why would Nissan. Have no Infiniti don’t makes no sense since same company
May cost more but there’s road noise in the corolla. There’s no road noise in the Camry. The Camry has a smoother ride than the corolla. My 2019 Camry is averaging 58 mpg’s. I guess you get what you pay for.
@@janetrohrbaugh6494 Which model of Camry Hybrid do you own? The LE gets the best mileage but it comes with a Lithium battery which may or may not have the lifespan of the nickel batteries found in other trims of Camry and in this Corolla. BTW are you quoting Canadian mpg or American mpg?
I have the LE because I’ve owned the Xle’s in the past and I’ve noticed no difference in the ride so I went with the LE and love it. The battery doesn’t matter to me because I have an extended warranty I paid for with Toyota for 125,000 miles no deductible. I don’t keep a car that long anyway. I’m quoting American mpg’s.
How spooky you have a hybrid model with leather seats?
Yea I can't find hybrid with leather at any dealerships
It's Softex, not leather
6:42 ; 4.5 Liters / 100 kms = take 235, divide by that 4.5 number, and you get 52.22 mpg (approximately).
In Australia our hybrid sedan is rated at 3.5L/100km. I brought one last week and have been getting lower than this over a 190km round trip to work. My best has been 3.1L/100km. I think the warmer weather in Australia might have something to do with these figures. The best car I have ever driven.
I'm clocking 65 mpg on eco mode.
Can’t wait until they start using their solid state batteries
Will they make a Corolla Prime?
I thought hybrid is only offered in lower trim LE
When is Sienna Hybrid coming?
Just wait for the 2020 Highlander hype to die down and then we should hear something.

Great review, nice to see Toyota upgrading the interior. Unfortunately as a previous comment stated, lower head room doesn't work for taller people.
I had tried the new Corolla hatch when it first came out so I was not too surprised about the sedan lacking headroom. The shock came with the new RAV4 .
Wish there was a hatchback version with android auto... Eh, Id probably go for the Insight.
Supposedly the newest Prius is getting a software update for Android Auto. It's the hatchback version... basically. Now, if you want the "crossover" version, that's the Rav4.
@@dan_hitchman007 Yeah, but the Prius is butt-ugly compared to the Corolla hatch.

Does the 2020 Corolla Hybrid come with Andriid Auto as well ?
Nope. Wommp womp. 😔
I believe it does. Toyota had announced that all 2020 Models would finally come with Androind Auto.
No rear air vents?
Does it feel grounded to the ground?
Yes, it's a car. The wheels touch the ground...
As long as you tie it down to the ground with a rope in the evenings, it won't fly away.

No, the car feels like it's flying in the air
There used to be an add for Toyota and a person used the line "It feels so grounded to the ground". Look it up.
Toyota can we get a Corolla hybrid with pleather, nicer rims and a manual transmission here in USA?
You can never get a manual trans with a hybrid because the Eletric motor has too much torque for a transmission and it’s better to just have a cvt because there is simply no need.
The best model of the current Corolla is the hybrid wagon.
YES it certainly is. I would say the eAWD wagon sold in Japan is the best of them all.
Great review! 🙌👍
This upmarket version is not available in the USA, at least not yet. That is a real shame.
More versions have to be on the way. Don't forget that there has been a major disruption of Corolla supply lines within North America due to the recent conversion of the Cambridge, Ontario Corolla plant to RAV4 production.
It is available now.
Seeing that you can lease one of these for $179/mo USD, this might be my next car. I haven't been excited enough about any of the 2021 offerings to pay $400+/mo, so I might just go this route and save a bunch of $$ so I can upgrade to something premium/luxury in 2024.
Wouldn't you save more money keeping your current car until 2024 than leasing this car new? Provided that your current car isn't breaking down

Trunk is well configured but still smaller than the competition as is the back seat. The placement of the "iPod" tacked on screen is just awful. At least you get - hopefully - good reliability with a Toyota.
Its slow?
My 100hp Corolla is more than adequate. Whats wrong with this one?
The Corolla hybrid is nice, but the dealer I visited told me that they are in high demand and are selling for $6,000 over MSRP. I think I'll wait 3 or 4 years for that 'demand' to drop so I can buy one at a sane price.
Give it about a year.
Which is the BEST Hybrid between:
The Corolla and the Insight?
And Between the Camry and Accord?
Which 1 of the 4 is the Best 1 Overall?
What about the Toyota Prius?
IMO each is a completely different car. Each has incredibly large differences between base and limited models; given NO difference in performance or handling between trims. Drive them, test parallel parking them, accelerate onto a freeway, pay attention to visibility, test their voice control(Honda is vastly superior in tech,) test parking them.
I can pretty much guarantee that one of them will be a CLEAR winner based on what you're looking for.
Corolla and Camry are better in their own category. Overall winner is Camry. But Camry does not offer heated steering wheel in all their lineup but Corolla does. Go figure...!
RAV4 Hybrid
Sounds like it's time to trade in the A7 sportback
you will save so much gas money per 100km, maintenance, insurance, warranty over time.
Why did Canada get the better version?
It is colder here so we 'needed' more heated seats.
Because Canadians like to buy small cars, while Americans buy big HUMMERS / SUVs instead.
@@honestycounts9352 hahaha pretty much true

@@instasingingvids3529 Let Toyota know you want more Corolla choices.
O to 60 mph in ~11seconds: how is that safe for freeway merging/ passing?
clearly its safe, if you cant merg or pass with a corolla i would cut up your drivers license...
Mike A
The hybrid corolla has the equivalent of ~120hp....
You are the only one that experiences this...the rest of us drive cars according to their abilities.
skinny small tires ruined it for me but 1000km on a tank in the city...impressive...can you recoup the premium paid for the hybrid through lower gas consumption...maybe over 10 years...good Uber car
Not too shabby for fuel savings.
hi, How to Change Speedometer mph to km?
Go into 'settings' in the menu and you can change it there.
@@honestycounts9352 my corolla hybrid is "LE" does it have too?
What about the AE86
3:20 Andrea before Andrea
I'd skip the hybrid (forgo the premium for the battery equipment and battery itself) and go for the SE trim. Punchy 2.0L engine with remarkable fuel economy and Toyota's 2 stage automatic transmission (physical 1st gear + CVT). With proper maintenance and care, it'll be driving 20 years down the road.
The manual is the SE to buy.
That would make sense by your logic since you would be replacing brakes and timing belt which will put you well over the running cost of the hybrid for the money over that time. You do you.
@@pauldenunzio3595 No timing belt on the 2.0, chain
4.5 translates into how many US MPG?
Your official rating is 52 mpg but it can easily be surpassed with sensible or semi-sensible driving. Car & Driver got a stunning 56 mpg in their 200 mile highway test at 75 mph. That means driving around 65 mph would put you well into the 60+ mpg range.
Lazy much?
@@IKnewMickey he could have typed that exact same sentence into Google and got an answer

Right Lane Hog we still get the Prius c in Canada

@@rightlanehog3151 Oddly enough they don't seem to sell the C-HR Hybrid in Canada either.
@@zenithred9731 They don't sell it in the USA either.
Well if u don't like CVT get a manual transmission period auto sucks!!!
