It's the aging population. The politicians continue to pass laws that cater exclusively to the elderly. The elderly are the largest voting block so they always win. Also the cultural mentality is "I had to suffer so the younger generation can suffer to". This is why no laws are passed granting better pay, child subsidies, tax credits, etc.. it all goes to the elderly. There's many other reasons but the politicians only cater to the old. Joe is such a moron saying video games. He knows nothing of the world. 😂

@@derek4412It’s more than that. The problem is deeper, people feel like they’re is no point to what they’re doing. This is a global issue. Many people all over the world are stuck in 30 year or even longer mortgages that they’re probably never going to pay off. Then they get married and have kids because it’s like what else are you going to do? They think it will cure their existential crisis, but it doesn’t. And then on top of that you have societal expectations, boxes that society says you need to live in. Then many of them realize they’re stuck in a job where they’re never going to advance. By the time they do advance to have any kind of power or influence, they’re already old. Some people just fill the time up with video games others with just constantly working and working, to make their lives feel like they have purpose. It’s like humanity is just going in a circle, just keeps repeating itself over and over. Technology just keeps advancing and people fade out, die and then new people come in and the circle just keeps going round and round. Like a never ending loop.

When I was with the US Navy in Japan they actually told us during our initial briefing not to stop and help Japanese people who have accidents or medical crises. The way they explained it was that Japan does not have good Samaritan laws and that you have no legal protection if you try to provide first aid to someone. In fact, if you make some kind of mistake and make the situation worse, you can actually be prosecuted. They told us to mind our own business and leave it to the medical professionals.
Same thing for getting involved in someone else's dispute. If you see someone getting beat down or abused, call the cops but otherwise mind your own business. It seems strange, but Japan is a different culture. after all, and has different standards.

I could tell they were stressed out, and didn’t want to parent after a hard days work so they let the tv handle it which lead to an overall bad impression on having dual income with three kids. Once a person is able to control reproduction and they start enjoying life, they often choose not to have children and if someone doesn't want to have children, that's their prerogative. No one should be trying to pressure people who don't want children to have children.

"They don't really give a reason why" ??? The article said very clearly why Japanese people aren't reproducing. It's the same reason why everyone else in first world countries aren't reproducing. IT'S TOO EXPENSIVE, the economy is not what it used to be, people are overworked, underpaid while corporations rake in record profits. Thank goodness I didn't have children, my life would be so much more difficult had I had any. No regrets and I understand why other people don't want to have any.

it's happening practically everywhere, go and look up fertility replacement rate, and what countries are at or above the 2.1 births per woman that is required to just keep their population steady. Only third world countries are above that. It's why mass immigration is happening in most democratic countries right now. Their entire system needs constant population growth.

South Korea's decline in birth rate is way way worse.
Surprisingly though with the amount of intelligent convo that usually happens on this podcast that Joe didn't think about some more tangible reasons about the decline in birth rate and it's pretty much the same as everywhere else:
People are too busy to meet anyone else
Generally people are broken from work culture
It's far too expensive to start a family, relatively speaking it may seem cheap from a US perspective/Dollar but the erosion of the middle class is happening in Japan the same way as the US
Very difficult for women to re-join the workforce after taking time out for a baby
Video games and hobbies are NOT a factor in the above
The government are trying to incentivise people to have children like giving a $4k equiv "bonus" or grant for children, tax reductions, and good paternity leave but people are pressured not to take the paternity leave

On the comedy, Japanese are actually very funny and love to laugh. Japanese variety shows are just filled with laughter. Most Japanese stand-up comics work in pairs and the humor is in the back-and-forth, similar to the way Abbott and Costello used to work. Every year, there is a huge comedy competition called the M1 Grand Prix that brings together comedians from all over the country to compete against one another in a play-off bracket format.
The reason most Americans don't get the humor is because we are locked out of the language. If we aren't fluent, we don't get the puns and can't understand the word play. As you gain fluency, you can pick it up more and more but it take a lot to reach that point. Rampage is right on Osaka. Comedy comes from everywhere, but the best Japanese comedians are usually from Western Japan, the region known as Kansai, around Osaka .
In day to day life, most Japanese people don't typically joke around with people until they really get to know them. I think it has to do with the concept of "face." The Japanese project seriousness to the outside world, but are actually very funny and sensitive towards people who are in their "in" group. As westerners, we aren't usually in Japan long enough to develop these relationships so we only see the serious side.

It's simple. No immigration. Yes, certain metrices are slightly lower than other G7 nations, however the one thing they do not have is a path to citizenship beyond marrying a Japanese person. Other G7 nation,( like my own) only have an increasing population rate due to high levels of immigration: birth rates are still below replacement levels. Unlike most developed countries, Japanese citizenship policy prioritizes heritage, over residency: you can live in Japan for 30 years and you are never considered Japanese: you are a foreign resident at best. But if you are of Japanese heritage, and are born and raise overseas, you can apply for immediate citizenship. Its still about blood not belonging. I'm not say it is good or bad, that's just the way it is.

Rogan and Rampage are so out of touch here.
It's a problem happening across the west and Japan. It's become so incredibly expensive to have children if you're on an average wage. Housing, cost of living etc. It's why the birthrate has dropped to under 1.5 children per woman in the UK and will likely be under 1 in 10 years time. That's why immigration is at an all time in the UK.
Govts just aren't prepared to look at the structural causes as to why the birthrate has fallen so they'll do the easy thing of letting in a load of immigrants and allow them to be scapegoated. It keeps the lower classes fighting against each other rather than fighting the elites.

About cultural differences: I heard the story about Japanese woman, that married Polish guy- and she lived with him in Poland for 10 years(she's an ambasador, or works at embassy or some such)- in her culture if you want someone's help, you have to steer the conversation in such a way, that the other person will offer help and even then you have to pretend like you don't want said help, and only after the other person insists, you accept it with gratitude
But over here if we need help, we just go to the person, that can help us and we straight up say so, and offer whatever we think is fair compensation(you helped me with my car? Let's go for drink on me- or something)
It was a bit of a cultural "shock" for her at first. Then- she went back to Japan for some holidays- and as soon as her father started that beating around the bush, that old song and dance she just went "what the fuck do you want? Just tell me!". Seems our best parts rubbed off on her
So if one day i'll see kinda white samurai, wearing wings, yelling "kurwa twoja mać...!" while charging with mix of katana and saber in hand- my life will be complete

There’s a documentary addressing Japanese declining population and joe Rogan did mention some of it, but a big one is being over worked. One of the things we all admire Japanese culture is their notorious work ethic, but they also work so much and hard that they do not have much time for a personal life. We complain in America about 5 day work week with 2 day weekend, but they have a 6 day work week!

They birth rate in japan is about the same in many western countries, we just keep the replacement level “artificially” in place with immigrants. Low birth rate is not a Japan problem, it seems to be a problem with pretty much all wealthy and developed nations.
