The black velvet are a mix of synthetic bristles and squirrel hair. They are a very good brush but can wear down a bit so I would recommend using an alternative brush to mix your colours and using the BV to paint.

I like those brushes, but I don’t reach for them too often because I’ve been on a multi year kick of painting geometric shapes as close together as possible without touching. These brushes are too soft to get as close to the edges as I’d like and getting crisp points on triangles (and similar) is possible but more difficult that it needs to be. But for more organic shapes or loose backgrounds, they’re awesome.
Oh! And you can make any pad of paper a block by clamping down the pages with binder clips and gluing the sides with PVA bookbinding glue. I do it all the time because I get scared off by the price of most watercolor blocks. It works even better if you have a book press, but I don’t so binder clips it is!
