    Went to the Omaha knife website and was very sad to see Curtis has passed away and the shop is shut down. I can tell you were a good guy and really cared about what you did... I wish I could have been a customer. Rest in peace

    I have 4 Council Tool Sport Utility axes. 36 inch Jersey, 36 inch double bit and two of the new 2021 Hudson Bay axes on 24 inch handles.
    These things are awesome! I have processed and split everything in the Cascades here in Washington. Edge retention and handles are awesome.
    The 36 inch Sport Utility Jersey is barbaric and my go-to axe. Crazy awesome.

    Man after watching this video and your knowledge and attention to detail just made me decide to buy my next axe or hatchet from you guys.

    Very interesting to watch the unboxing and see the unique details of each axe. I think the appeal of axes is that no two are alike. I would have a hard time as a dealer because every time I pulled out an unusually pretty axe, I would be wanting to keep that one lol! No doubt you guys know your products well and thanks for sharing information! Take care.

    Thank you for putting up this video. I did want to point out, that you do not want tight grain on hardwood handles. This is a myth that people carry over from softwoods like construction lumber pine.
    Pine is stronger with tight grain, hardwood is stronger with wide grain. So that guy that sent his ax back both caused himself inconvenience, and presumably got a weaker handle.

    I like what you did to your axe with the sheet. It has a lot of character :) Thanks for sharing. And by the way the steel CT uses on their regular axes I believe is 1060 or 1065 which actually is a very good choice for axes as it is extremely tough specially with lower HRC. Thank you for the awesome videos and hard work. Cheers from Canada

    I’ll be ordering my Council stuff from you folks from now on. I’m not a snob, but would prefer at the least reasonable grain orientation. 45 degree or better has been a standard that my grandfather preached to me my whole childhood and I’m sitting here in the shop with a boys axe with totally horizontal grain staring at me hatefully. I like that you’re looking over your stock.

    Great info thrown in with the unboxing. Personally I buy a new axe for the head, if I have to rehaft it because I don't like the handle then that's fine with me, if the handle shows up looking really good then score for me. I love council axes, I can't bring myself to spend gransfors money.

    I have the Camp Carver with the 16 inch handle, I LOVE that thing! It took forever to find, was out of stock everywhere for the longest time, it was very expensive but in my opinion a beautiful tool.

    Thanks for the very informative video. Like you, I am big on quality and detail. I have a couple different Gransfors'. I find they are pleasing to the eyes and feel great in the hand. I heard Council Tools' especially the Wood-Craft pack axe line is as good or even better. So I tried the Wood-Craft 2# 19" but decided to return because there was issues with quality control.

    Most axes are 1050 1055 steel. CT velvicut like you mention are 5160. That actually a spring steel. 5160 is tough stuff yet easy to put an edge on.

    • @spektr540hemi
      @spektr540hemi 2 роки тому

      Thank you for that bit of info that the Velvicut line are 5160.
      I have several axes that are 5160 and several that have been made from reshaped/forged ballpeen hammers, axels, leafsprings, etc...
      5160 has proven, to me, to be a top tier metal for such things.

    the reason you need straight grain orientation is that the rings you see on the side of the Gransfors, if they were on the front and back of the handle, with heavy use these can raise up. You run your hands down it and it like pushing a ragged knife into your hand into your wrist! and that is a fact!. Heart wood and sap wood swell with moisture at different rates. keep it oiled and sealed and it will not be a problem.

    The round wedges are better because they spread out the wood in all directions . A good hang and a round wedge makes for a very secure fit.

    • @longshanks5531

      Yes, I also prefer barrel wedges

    • @prestonj1025
      @prestonj1025 Рік тому

      I've not had much experience with the barrel wedge.., but I've been swinging an ax since I was old enough to carry one.. very young when I hung my first handle.. I didn't know all the tricks and proper methods, but that head never came loose. It has been my experience that some people like things because "that's the way we always did it" , or " my grandpappy taught me. This is how he did it." They don't like new or different. The barrel wedge may indeed be a better way, but I'm not an expert.

    7 years ago when I got into axes all I heard was "grain orientation grain orientation grain orientation " then I started realizing that everybody was saying the same exact thing in every separate video. Then I realized that grain orientation doesn't even matter! DO WHAT YOU LIKE

    Bought my fss boys axe from these folks about 8 years ago i think. Paid extra for select grain handle and their sharpening service they offered. I hate to hear this fella died. The axe gets used to limb with and splits kindling. It holds an edge great,and has had no problems whatsoever.

    This age if axe fascination and popularity is astounding to me! As a guy that actually works in the woods I know that majority of these axes never get used….that guy has years and years of knowledge working in wilderness where these tools actually get used…I’d be careful to mention his information “not being correct!” Is mustache and suspenders doesn’t mean that he is a hipster of current trendiness, concerned about the handle “looking cool”

      I m self wonder about Pack axe vs the also CT Camp Carver - but it's strait handle I'm not convinced I would want to exchange.
      (..over the GB forest axe.
      But then maybe consider a Sibbulat or Fenix ?).

    Gransfors Bruks have a good fit and finish but their axes aren't the best. Council tool, Muller and lastly Hultafors, would be my choices over any Gransfors Bruks axe.

    In theory council tools is a great buy. In reality, they will not send you good working axes. Council tool will actively send you downgraded axes over the internet such as Amazon or eBay. I'm 5 axes in and so far all returned for major problems out the box.

    I ordered a gransfors bruks maul handle from these guys because the website said they were in stock. They emailed and told me handles were out of stock and on backorder, would you like a refund or wait. I opted for the refund. They never refunded my money and blamed it on my bank. I checked with my bank, nothing. I emailed again and again (all pleasant) and they did not respond to any of them.
    This is stealing and is no different than snatching an old lady's purse.

    I ordered the 24 inch wood craft pack thats 150 follars and the edge was eneven and the handle was probably 10 percent off(LOPSIDED) and the edge wss chipped. Besides that it looked great and i even finished the handle. It looked so good, but i returned it for a refund bevause i dont feel safe with a axe that has an improperly hung handle. Many others have similar experiences. Its sad that an american axe is so poor quality while looking so good
